Student Living Lab, kombinera innovation inom boende och byggnadsteknisk forskning med studentbostäder i Jönköping / Student Living Lab, combining innovation in housing and building engineering research with student housing in Jönköping

Javebrink, Linnea January 2018 (has links)
Purpose: The lead time in the construction industry's innovation development today is far too long. Jönköping's population increases and at the same time Jönköping University is expanding. The need for more housing and student housing is therefore a fact. A Living Lab (LL) creates opportunities to solve both above-mentioned situations. It is a home that simultaneously provide different types of researchers with a research platform to test innovations directly in a real-life environment. Such a project could thus be an advantage for a developing city like Jönköping. The purpose of the project is to investigate how LL projects can open opportunities for innovations in housing and building engineering research in Jönköping, while creating new student housing in the city. Method: The research strategy is qualitative, the main method is a case study. Methods of data collection are literature studies and interviews. Literature studies take place around the concept, the background and different existing projects. This is done to investigate the development of the LL concept and its establishments. The main method used in this report is interviews, which the majority is done over the phone and a couple of them as site visits. Interviews take place with stakeholders from HSB Living Lab in Gothenburg, stakeholders from KTH Live-in Lab in Stockholm and potential stakeholders from Jönköping. Findings: This report serves as a preliminary study for potential stakeholders to establish or participate in a Student LL in Jönköping. In order to shorten lead times in housing and building engineering research, LL has been proven to benefit from innovative research in this area. A project would combine a research arena with new student housing to promote the housing contributions to a more efficient innovation process. In the housing- and construction sector, interest has been shown for innovations in housing environment, real estate and construction business, with efficiency and cost reduction, development and efficiency of materials and smart energy solutions. There is also a research interest for studying of the learning environments and the contributions of the residents to their environment. A potential place of establishment is found just by the university, which would benefit both the university, its research and the establishment of new student housing. Implications: To continue developing the work, further research is recommended on the research questions for a LL-project. It is recommended to review additional opportunities that exists in addition to building engineering and develop issues regarding, for example, housing environment and learning environments. When two of the four parts of the university were reached for interviews, it is also interesting to study the interests of the other parts. There would be an interest in studying how a twist of the concept can be applied to find a specific niche for Jönköping. A project would solve several student housing units that would help solve some of the problem regarding the current housing shortage and enable contributing to the development of the city. Limitations: As the LL concept in Sweden is at an early stage, background information is related to international focus. The report is then limited to focus on Sweden's two major LLs with establishment in Gothenburg and Stockholm with permanent student housing. Furthermore, the focus is on Jönköping, the city of the authors of the report, its potential stakeholders, establishment opportunities and innovation opportunities for a Student LL project. Keywords: Living Lab, student, open innovation, building technology and sustainability.

Estratégias de microfabricação utilizando toner para produção de dispositivos microfluídicos / Strategies microfabrication using toner to produce microfluidic devices

Heron Dominguez Torres da Silva 04 September 2006 (has links)
Microfabrication processes and devices for hydrodynamic and electroosmotic manipulation were developed based on toner-polyester, toner-glass and toner-as-resist techniques. Additionally, techniques to perforate glass slides and sealing of glass devices were introduced. Microdevices for capillary electrophoresis and electrospray for mass spectrometry were developed using these techniques. The characterization of the materiais and the processes demonstrated that the devices obtained by the toner-polyester process are compatible with the media used for capillary electrophoresis. The detection of alkaline ions with capillary electrophoresis with contactless conductivity detection was demonstrated. The typical cross shape microstructure was designed with a 22-mm long and 12-µm deep separation channel. The conductivity cell was implemented with 1-mm wide adhesive copper stripes. The applied signal was 530kHz and 10Vpp . The separation of 100µmo1L-1 K+, Na+, and Li+ was accomplished in 0.8 min under a voltage of 1 kV. Another toner-polyester microchip was developed to demonstrate its usefulness for electrospray/mass spectrometry. Solutions of 1 mmol L-1 potassium chloride and 1 mmol L-1 glucosamine in water/methanol 1:1 (v/v) were introduced with stable current of 100 nA without corona discharge. Capillary electrophoresis with amperometric detection was also demonstrated. The separation of iodide (10 mmol L-1) and ascorbate (40 mmol L-1) was carried out at 4.0 kV (800 V cm-1) with detection potential of 0.9 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), electrokinetic injection at 1.0 kV/10 s, running buffer of sodium borate 10 mmol L-1 with CTAH 0.2 mmol L-1 , pH 9.2. The efficiency was 1.6.104 plates/m and the limits of detection were 500 nmol L-1 (135 9mol) and 1.8 µmol L-1 (486 amol) for iodide and ascorbate, respectively. The toner-glass process was proposed and conductivity and photometric detections were demonstrated for the devices generated by this new technique. The separation of 200 pmol L-1 K+, Na+, and Li+ was achieved in buffer histidine/lactic acid 30 mmol L-1 water/methanol 9: 1 (v/v), electrokinetic injection at 2.0 kV/5.0 s, separation potential of 1 kV, and contactless conductivity detection at 530 kHz and 2.0 Vpp. The photometric detection of methylene blue at 660 nm was carried out in sodium borate 20 mmol L-1 (pH 9.2).

Fabricação de microcanais por moldagem em poliéster a partir de matriz de silício e pela utilização de toner como resiste para corrosão de vidro / Manufacture microchannel polyester molding from silicon matrix and by the use of toner as resistant to glass corrosion

Heron Dominguez Torres da Silva 10 August 2001 (has links)
Several processes and products have been proposed to build and use microstructures for chemical purposes. Most of these processes were adapted from microelectronic technologies, which resulted in products with excellent resolution and quality. However, there are some devices that could be generated by simpler and rougher processes. In this work, two processes were developed in order to allow producing simple devices based on microchannels. The first process is a method to produce polyester based devices. A conventional microelectronic process was used to produce a silicon matrix. This matrix was used to produce blocks of isophthalic resin by in situ polymerization. The best results were obtained by adding 1 % (w/w) silicone oil during the polyester resin preparation. This additive improves the mold relief and the smoothness of the device surface. Channels 14.0-µm depth and roughness of 1.4 µm were obtained with a mold with structure height of 15.3 µm and roughness of 0.5 µm. A flexible sheet of silicone allows forming enclosed microchannels with depth of 5-7 µm. This dimension was evaluated by conductance measurement after filling the channel with KCl solution. A process for glass corrosion, using laser printer toner as resist, was proposed. In this method, the layout is printed over a special sheet of paper using a HP LaserJet 6L laser printer. The paper is used to transfer the toner to a soda-lime glass lamina by a thermic process. Hydrofluoric acid solution was used to promote the selective glass corrosion. Channels 7.1-µm depth and roughness of 1.0 µm were obtained. Although this second method does not give the saroe resolution and aspect ratio as the first one, it is suitable to easy and fast prototyping. Gn the other hand, the first method is suitable for low-cost production of devices in small scale.

Exploring studio-based higher education for T-shaped knowledge workers, case LAB studio model

Heikkinen, K.-P. (Kari-Pekka) 02 January 2018 (has links)
Abstract Speed of information, uncertainty and complexity are increasing in the work-life of the knowledge worker. In addition, solving complex and wicked global problems require cooperation skills as well as ability to learn in collaboration across the disciplines, meaning skills in crossing boundaries. These requirements set new challenges for educating knowledge workers in higher education. Metaskills, such as learning by utilising networks, communication and critical thinking, have become as essential as discipline-specific skills. Metaskills combined with discipline-specific skills are called T-shaped skills. Individuals possessing these skills, so-called T-shaped professionals, are exposed to the experience and the knowledge of other disciplines and thus are recognised as carrying the skills for crossing boundaries. This dissertation examines how a Finnish studio-based pedagogical approach to bachelor education, the LAB Studio Model (LSM), contributes to the education of boundary crossing competence. This qualitative dissertation utilises exploratory as well as design research as its research approach and contains four original publications. First, the characteristics of LSM and the utilisation of studio-based practices in higher education are studied by conducting literature reviews. Second, the internal and external boundary crossing activities are studied by performing case studies, where the new knowledge creation and establishment of learning networks are in focus. Empirical data has been collected by conducting web-based surveys, theme-based student and student team interviews, direct observation, and participative observation. The outcome of this dissertation suggests that LSM offers a potential educational model for learning the skills of boundary crossing, resulting in a T-shaped skill base. The results of this dissertation include new findings on how commonly studio-based education is utilised world wide in higher education, how LSM differs from the existing configurations that utilise the studio-based model in higher education, as well as active internal and external boundary crossing among students. This dissertation contributes to the discussion of university-society collaboration by the new learning configurations, and to the interdisciplinary education of knowledge workers. The results of this dissertation can be utilised in the development of studio-based configurations in higher education.

A scalable web-based system handling sensor data from smart homes

Nordin, Emil, Manfredh, Lucas January 2019 (has links)
A smart home is a building equipped with sensors collecting data about its environment. Data collected from smart home buildings can be used for research to improve home automation and develop smart cities. A scalable web-based system can be used to handle the large quantities of data generated from smart homes. Previous studies have been conducted on the requirements of a system collecting sensor data from smart homes, however, information about the presentation of data is still lacking. Because of this research needs to be done on what kind of system handles and presents sensor data well. The aim of this degree project is to identify the requirements of a web-based system handling and presenting sensor data. A scalable web-based system is developed based on the requirements identified from interviews and a literature study. The system shows that sensor data can be presented in a manner which facilitates research. Results show that a scalable web-based system can be used to display and download sensor data with associated information about the data.

Modelling of stormwater treatment in biofilters using MIKE+ : Possibilities and limitations / Modellering av biofilters dagvattenrening i MIKE+ : Möjligheter och begränsningar

Bouju, Cecile January 2021 (has links)
As research has expanded on the environmental impact of stormwater on receiving ecosystems more focus is now being put on the quality issues of stormwater. Biofilters are one of many nature-based solutions that have been developed for that purpose and are also the subject of this study. In order to plan and implement biofilters, predictive models can be useful tools to forecast their performance on a given site. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibilities and limitations of modelling the treatment of stormwater in a biofilter using MIKE+. This was done by first trying to model the hydrological conditions of a biofilter from a study site in Sundsvall and thereafter coupling a water treatment model created in ECO Lab.  The results showed that there were some notable differences between the parameters affecting the hydrological flow in reality and what is currently possible to model in MIKE+. It was seen that the Soakaway node used to model biofilters needs to be complexified in order to properly model the hydrological conditions of biofilters. The main improvements required are that the flow attenuation should occur within the Soakaway node rather than before or after and that it should be based on soil properties. The retention volume also needs to be integrated in the node and a varying exfiltration rate is believed to be required to fit the varying nature of evapotranspiration.  The hydrological model was seen to have a great impact on the water treatment model and some limitations with the program and the used model were identified. Regarding ECO Lab, the program is currently unable to consider interevent processes when the biofilter is empty. These processes can however be of great importance for some contaminants. The program also assumes a time dependency whereas it has been seen that a short retention time may be sufficient to achieve good reduction efficiency. The model used is a highly lumped conceptual model with few parameters so further research aiming at the creation of correction factors for the main affecting parameters is believed to be required in order to avoid design specific calibration. Calibration should also occur over a longer time period in order to consider the variability of stormwater.

Vorwort 2. Einleitung 3. Forschungsartikel 4. Poster 5. Bridging The Gap Between Telemetry and the PC

Nelson, Wade, Shurtleff, Diana 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 17-20, 1988 / Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada / The explosive use and extensive development of software and hardware for the IBM PC and PC Clones over the past few years has positioned the PC as one of many viable alternatives to system designers configuring systems for both data acquisition and data analysis. Hardware abounds for capturing signals to be digitized and analyzed by software developed for the PC. Communication software has improved to where system developers can easily link instrumentation devices together to form integrated test environments for analyzing and displaying data. Telemetry systems, notable those developed for lab calibration and ground station environments, are one of many applications which can profit from the rapid development of data acquisition techniques for the PC. Recently developed for the ADS100A telemetry processor is a data acquisition module which allows the system to be linked into the PC world. The MUX-I/O module was designed to allow the PC access to telemetry data acquired through the ADS 100A, as well as provide a method by which data can be input into the telemetry environment from a host PC or equivalent RS-232 or GPIB interface. Signals captured and digitized by the ADS100A can be passed on to the PC for further processing and/or report generation. Providing interfaces of this form to the PC greatly enhances the functionality and scope of the abilities already provided by the ADS100A as one of the major front-end processors used in telemetry processing today. The MUX-I/O module helps "bridge the gap" between telemetry and the PC in an ever increasing demand for improving the quantity and quality of processing power required by today's telemetry environment. This paper focuses on two distinct topics, how to transfer data to and from the PC and what off-the-shelf software is available to provide communication links and analysis of incoming data. Major areas of discussion will include software protocols, pre vs post processing, static vs dynamic processing environments, and discussion of the major data analysis and acquisition packages available for the PC today, such as DaDisp and Lotus Measure, which aid the system designer in analyzing and displaying telemetry data. Novel applications of the telemetry to PC link will be discussed.
