Implementation of the Integrated Landscape Approach in Mexico with Empahsis on policies and multilevel governance initiatives

Pedroza Arceo, Norma Mercedes 22 November 2021 (has links)
Holistic and multidisciplinary approaches where both conservation and development goals are in place is one of the global orientations towards sustainability. Science has come together with practical experiences and lessons learned that highlight the critical importance of working at a ‘Landscape’ level. Landscapes are a pivotal scale for both sustainability and sustainable development. Because landscapes are needed to articulate and interconnect local, subnational, national, and therefore, global goals. International efforts in regards to sustainable rural development are not new; however, they are currently pointing to an Integrated Landscape Approach (ILA). Despite that, there is not yet a universal definition of the ILA; there are some principles or prescriptions that are useful for the assessment of current specific efforts of ILA implementation. In the present thesis, a multi-criteria policy analysis of ILA in Mexico was performed with the aims to identify and analyze multi-level governance initiatives, and policy frameworks, and contribute to the investigation if the landscape approach makes a difference in terms of conservation and sustainable development goals. International frameworks, national policies, and in particular Mexican landscape initiatives were analyzed and discussed. Along with the document analysis, key informant interviews were carried out. The findings confirm that the Landscape Sustainability science framework can be adequate to sustain further multidisciplinary research on ILA. Additionally, the ILA in Mexico has been promoted through at least 10 national policies and 15 landscape initiatives with evident signs of consistency with the ILA aims and principles. It was found that there are several challenges for effective ILA implementation, such as long-term finance and planning and inter-sectorial collaboration within common policy goals. Among these, major “bottlenecks” of effective ILA implementation lie on a Good Landscape Governance and the Willingness of Government (“political will”) and Stakeholders to pursue the ILA. The ILA is not the one and only solution for sustainability and sustainable development at the landscape level. Indeed, the ILA still needs scientifically sound research and more long-term capital investments. The findings of this study help to understand that the ILA is an alternative to interconnect the human, social, environmental and economic dimensions within each particular landscape for an effective problem solving, decision-making and implementation of sustainable development.:1. Všednost a výjimečnost v životě a v prožívání dětských protagonistů v povídkách Adalberta Stiftera Horský křišťál a Žula / The ordinary and extraordinary in life and experience of child protagonists in Adalbert Stifter's stories Rock Crystal and Granite

Koťová, Markéta January 2018 (has links)
The following diploma thesis deals with the analysis of two short stories by Adalbert Stifter from his collection Colorful stones - Rock Crystal and Granit. They were deliberately chosen, because in both stories children are the main protagonists. In these short stories there is always a boy and a girl, while the boy is always the one more experienced, and he protects the girl and brings her to safety. She follows him and obeys his instructions. Although the text contains many descriptions, it does not act statically because the heroes are on the run from danger, which gives the action dynamics. The text, the story, the language and the plot of the short stories as well as their common elements are analyzed. Furthermore, the theoretical concept, which is formulated in the preface to this collection, and whose major concepts are big and small, is confronted with the realization in these short stories. Indikatoren zur Landschaftsvielfalt

Walz, Ulrich 02 February 2015 (has links) (PDF)

Co-design: Working with farmers in Europe to halt the loss of biological diversity

Hölting, Lisanne, Busse, Maria, Bülow, Stefanie, Engler, Jan O., Hagemann, Nina, Joormann, Ineke, Kernecker, Maria Lee, Larondelle, Neele, Sturm, Astrid, Turkelboom, Francis, Wätzold, Frank, Cord, Anna F. 16 May 2024 (has links)
1. Biodiversity loss in European agricultural landscapes is progressing rapidly despite a growing number of conservation efforts.Oneof the reasons for this is that farmers do not have enough decision-making power and do not receive adequate advice to tailor conservation measures to local conditions and regional biodiversity targets. 2. In this paper, we therefore address the potential and practical implementation of co-designing conservation measures through close collaboration between farmers and other stakeholders (e.g. other practitioners, conservation experts, agricultural advisors, scientists and policymakers). 3. Based on interviews with four researchers from ongoing European co-design - projects, one national and one European farmers’ organizations, we discuss the challenges and provide recommendations for co-design in the context of biodiversity conservation in agricultural landscapes. 4. Our aim is to reach scientists, practitioners and local decision makers working on innovative and locally adapted conservation efforts.

Kampung / landscape : rural-urban migrants’ interpretations of their home landscape. The case of Alor Star and Kuala Lumpur

Maliki, Nor Zarifah January 2008 (has links)
Kampung is a pervasive concept in Malay Culture and considered counter urban in contemporary discourse. Rural to urban migration of the Malays from kampung to cities occur at an accelerated pace in urbanizing Malaysia. Rural migrants are said to remain attached to their rural kampung lifestyles and find the socio-spatial character of urban environment difficult to adapt to. Previous studies on rural kampung by anthropologists and social scientists have unpacked the socio-economic and cultural aspects of kampung Malays in rural area. My study of migrants in Alor Star and Kuala Lumpur is focused on the landscape meanings of kampung and explores how these ideas have been brought across to a city environment. I investigated the meanings and symbolic values that kampung holds to the rural-urban migrants through a ‘landscape lens’. I recorded the experiences of the rural-urban migrants in adapting to an urban landscape, identified kampung elements to which people have strong attachment with and highlighted the kampung characteristics that could be maintained or replicated in order to address the maladaptation of the migrants and enhance their urban living experience. Study participants were rural-urban migrant respondents from rural kampung in Yan, Kedah who have either moved to Kuala Lumpur or Alor Star. The case studies in the two cities were carried out using qualitative methods including photo elicitation, in-depth interviews, model mapping techniques and participant observation. Respondents provided narratives of their journey from kampung, moving to the city, and their process of adapting and settling in cities. Challenges in adaptation to city living spaces included spatial use, privacy, social relationships, safety and surveillance. My findings demonstrated that the memory of kampung plays a significant part in guiding the life of respondents in the city, and that the image of kampung is pervasive in the daily social and spatial practice of rural-urban migrants, guiding respondents’ level of adaptation and place-making in the city landscape. The use of landscape as lens was helpful in interpreting the complex and multivalent kampung meanings. Addressing a dynamic kampung idea through a landscape framework highlights the strong parallels between kampung and the early landscape concepts. The process of unweaving the meanings of kampung have illustrated that kampung ideas have the potential to inspire a landscape design language that could mitigate the harsh contrast between rural and urban Malaysia.
