High-Resolution Speleothem-Based Palaeoclimate Records From New Zealand Reveal Robust Teleconnection To North Atlantic During MIS 1-4Whittaker, Thomas Edward January 2008 (has links)
Growth rates, δ18O and δ13C of five stalagmites from the west coasts of North and South Islands, New Zealand, provide records of millennial-scale climate variability over the last ~75 kyr. Thirty-five uranium-series ages were used to provide the chronology. δ18O of stalagmite calcite was influenced by changes in moisture source region, temperature and both δ18O and δ13C primarily display a negative relationship with rainfall. To assist interpretation of climatic signals δ18O profiles were adjusted for the ice-volume effect. Changes in these proxies reflect changes in the strength of the circumpolar westerly circulation and the frequency of southwesterly flow across New Zealand. MIS 4 was a period of wet and cool climate lasting from 67.7 to 61.3 kyr B.P., expressed in the stalagmites by an interval of strongly negative isotope ratios and increased growth rate. This contrasts with less negative δ18O and δ13C, and slow growth, interpreted as dry and cold climate, during much of MIS 2. This difference between MIS 2 and MIS 4 provides an explanation for why glacial moraines in the Southern Alps of MIS 4 age lie beyond those deposited during the last glacial maximum (MIS 2). Heinrich events, with the exception of H0 (the Younger Dryas), are interpreted from high-resolution South Island stalagmite HW05-3, from Hollywood Cave, West Coast, as times of wetter and cooler climate. Minima in δ18O and δ13C (wet periods) occurred at 67.7-61.0, 56-55, 50.5-47.5, 40-39, 30.5-29, 25.5-24.3 and 16.1-15. kyr B.P. matching Heinrich events H6-H1 (including H5a) respectively. This demonstrates a robust teleconnection between events in the North Atlantic and New Zealand climate. Minima in δ18O also occurred at similar times in less well-dated North Island stalagmite RK05-3 from Ruakuri Cave, Waitomo. Speleothems from low-latitudes have revealed that Heinrich events forced southerly displacement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. This caused steepening of the temperature gradient across mid-southern latitudes, increased westerly circulation and resulted in wet conditions on the west coast of both islands. Immediately following H1 in the HW05-3 stable isotope profiles is another excursion to more negative isotopic values, suggesting wet and cold climate, lasting from 14.6 to 13.0 kyr B.P. Such a climate on the West Coast at this time has been previously suggested from glacier advance (e.g. Waiho Loop moraine) and decreased abundance of tall trees on the landscape. This event occurred too early to be a response to H0, but is synchronous with a return to cool climate in Antarctica. Thus West Coast climate appears to have been sensitive to changes in Antarctica as well as the North Atlantic. Isotopic minima (wet and cool climate) in South Island stalagmite GT05-5, which formed during the Holocene, first occurred 4.6 kyr B.P. This began a series of four oscillations in isotope ratios, the last terminating when the stalagmite was collected (2006). Onset of these oscillations is associated with initiation of ice advance in the Southern Alps, and beginning of the Neoglacial. The last oscillation displays enriched isotope ratios lasting from 1.2 to 0.8 kyr B.P. succeeded by depleted ratios lasting until 0.15 kyr B.P., mirroring the Medieval Climate Optimum and Little Ice Age, respectively, of European palaeoclimate records.

Returning student characteristics, reasons for reentry, and effective program practices in a selected Texas alternative education programWilkinson, Herlinda Aguilar, 1958- 11 March 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to ascertain the characteristics of dropouts, their rationale for reentry, and what constituted effective practices within a Texas alternative education program (AEP). While, a number of studies have been conducted to explain why students drop out of school, more research was needed in the area of students that reenter to complete their studies (Fernandez, Paulsen & Hiranko-Nakanishi, 1996; Krashen, 1998; NCES, 1981; Pirog & Magee, 1997; Ramsey, 1988; Rumberger, 1995; Warren, 1996; White & Kaufman, 1997). The study utilized qualitative methodology with a case-study approach by utilizing small groups within the context of an organization (Miles and Huberman, 1994). The study site was purposely selected (Kuzel, 1992; Morse, 1989) using low-socio-economic criteria, ethnic representation, an AEIS rating of Commended, and a high graduation rate. Site participant selection included comprehensive sampling (Goetz and LeCompte, 1984) of the AEP personnel and random sampling of the student participants and their respective parents. The primary data was collected using a modified three-interview method (Dolbeare and Schuman, 1982) with corroborating document review and focus groups. Findings indicated that research participants could identify seventeen different characteristics for returning high school students. Some of the characteristics describing these students also reflect their motivation or rationale for returning back to complete their high school studies. The study revealed four major practices within the AEP that supported the program and its students towards their mission of graduating. These were: hiring the right personnel, monitoring academic progress, providing student support services, and maintaining a safe school climate. A resultant theme indicated that there was a need to promote a positive image of the value of the AEP. Since only ten participants and five students were included in the study, the findings can only be tentatively generalized. Finally, suggestions are made for AEP programs to be designed to entice students not only to return back to school, but to remain until their goal to graduate is realized. / text

The role of ICT in optimizing reverse textile supply chainsTsiupka, Iuliia, Mason, Alicia January 2015 (has links)
Fast fashion and over consumption within the textile industry has led to a serious depletion of natural resources. The current rate of population growth and consumption is unsustainable. In result, there is a growing interested in sustainable solutions, one of which is reverse supply chains. Infrastructures for recycling textile fibers are being researched and developed. At the same time, it is important to put a focus on also developing the infrastructures for textile recollection. When examining a forward supply chain, the last mile, or point of distribution to the final consumer, can be considered the most costly when it comes to logistics costs. As a result, within a reverse supply chain the point of textile recollection, or the “first mile” as defined by the authors, can also be considered problematic in terms of logistical costs. Cirqle is a Swedish based app using ICT to aide in the recollection of used textiles, by offering app users rewards (discounts) for used textile returns at specific retailers. Through gathering specific information about app users, ICT companies such as Cirqle, are key to optimizing reverse supply chains, and in result, aiding in the reduction of the “first mile problem”. Due to the research gap identified by the authors, the purpose of this thesis is to explore how a digital infrastructure for collecting used garments, such as the Cirqle App, can be used to optimize location‟s for collection points; therefore minimizing the first mile problem of reverse logistics in the textile industry.

A study on Textile Reinforced - and Expanded Polystyrene Concrete sandwich beamsNguyen, Viet Anh 12 January 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC) with a small thickness, high tensile and compressive strength has been combined with lightweight materials to create sandwich elements. Due to the low strength of the core materials in the sandwich elements, the additional shear connector devices were suggested to improve the load capacity. However, it raised an idea of using a higher strength material core, Expanded Polystyrene Concrete (EPC), without any connector devices to create a new type of lightweight sandwich element, which can be an answer for not only developing lightweight structures but also solving environmental problems. In this thesis, this novel idea was gradually realized with a study on TRC-EPC sandwich beams.
Firstly, experimental material tests on EPC showed the possibility to recycle EPS waste for EPC with a density of around 950 kg/m3. Thus, an EPC with a density of 920 kg/m3 and a compressive strength of 5.2 N/mm2 was chosen for the core to realize the concept for TRC-EPC sandwich with 18 experimental beams. Bending tests of six series with shear-to-depth-ratio (a/d) from 1.5 to 5.2 were implemented to study load responses of this type of sandwich beam. The failure moments of all the specimens were smaller than the nominal moment strength of the cross section. The load capacities of the specimens depend strongly on the ratio a/d.
The calculations for the shear capacity according to standards as well as shear calculation approaches were implemented. Due to their generalized form, ACI 318-05 and EC2 offer conservative results for a/d<5.2. The dependence of the shear capacity on a/d could be better described with CEB-FIB Model Code 1990. For the beams with 1.5<a/d and a/d<2.1, Strut and Tie Model gave the most suitable results. In case a/d>2.1, ZINK’s model offered better results than the others. Besides, a new proposed equation for the shear capacity of TRC-EPC sandwich beams depending on the a/d was also suggested.
In order to model the load response of the six experimental series, FEM models with ATENA developed. The models with and without a consideration of the bond between the textile and fine HSC in the TRC layer underestimated the load capacity with tolerance 26% and 28 % respectively. The tolerances for the deflections in the models with a/d>2.5 were around 22 % and 23%.
Finally, an engineering model originally based on sandwich theory was developed to model the load-deflection response of this type of sandwich beams. The model could predict the displacement with tolerances from -24 % to 12 %. The load capacity of TRC-EPC sandwich beams was underestimated with a tolerance in the range of 15- 34 %.

Or,
Formerly the freedom of wiIling in Quebec was considered to be "unlimited", which meant that
its scope was such that the deceased could refrain from bequeathing any property at aIl to his or
her spouse or children. Following the introduction of legal measures on compensatory allowance
and, more particularly, provisions concerning the family patrimony and the survival of the
obligation of support, the scope of this freedom is no longer as alI-inclusive as it once was.
Although Quebeckers remain free to determine via their last wiIls and testaments to whom they
wish to bequeath their property, henceforth their margin of freedom is limited by the preceding
legislative changes which entitle the surviving spouse and immediate family of the deceased to
claim to certain amounts from the succession, whatever the last will of the deceased may have
been. As such, the patrimony upon which the testator now exercises freedom has ceased
necessarily to be that which the deceased had control over during his or her life and marriage. It
is thus no longer possible to refer to Quebeckers' "unlimited freedom" of wiIling.
The emergence of limitations in testamentary freedom in the Civil Code invites us to question
the reasons and foundations for this shift in the freedom of willing and, incidentaIly, the more
general issue of the reform and evolution offamily law in society.
To address these issues, this thesis is founded upon a socio-Iegal approach according to which it
is essential to seek out the basis of the evolution of law from within the social representations
valued in a society at a given time in its history. Beginning from the postulate that it is the
changes in social representations that help to explain the transition from a social rationality to a
legal rationality, this thesis illustrates by what actors, foIlowing which lines of logic and to what
end these limitations in the freedom of wiIling were introduced into Quebec law. Such an
approach to the evolution of the law on the basis of social representations thereby helps "to
enlighten" the commonly expressed idea whereby law is a mirror image of mores.
Based upon an analysis of social representations recorded and retrieved in the discourse of
different social actors, including briefs tabled before the National Assembly and proceedings in
the Journal of Debates, parliamentary committees, as weIl as decided cases, doctrine and
statutory texts, this thesis seeks to demonstrate how the changes which led to the restriction in
testamentary freedom in Quebec extend far beyond perceptions evoking family and patrimony as
is generaIly claimed. The introduction of limitations in the freedom of willing in the Civil Code
seems rather to result from a compromise between the evolution in social representations
regarding family relationships and the evolution in social representations regarding law, more
specifically with regard to the functions of law in society and the conditions underlying the law's
systemic coherence.
Lastly the analysis of this evolution makes it possible to observe that while the law governing
successions was for a long time a "component" of property law, henceforth it has specifically
gravitated to being a "component" of family law.

Hybridity in Cooper, Mitchell and Randall : erasures, rewritings, and American historical mythologyThormodsgard, Marie January 2004 (has links)
This thesis starts with an overview of the historical record tied to the birth of a new nation studied by Alexis de Tocqueville and Henry Steele Commager. It singles out the works of Henry Nash Smith and Eugene D. Genovese for an understanding, respectively, of the "myth of the frontier" tied to the conquest of the American West and the "plantation myth" that sustained slavery in the American South. Both myths underlie the concept of hybridity or cross-cultural relations in America. This thesis is concerned with the representation or lack of representation of hybridity and the roles played by female characters in connection with the land in two seminal American novels and their film versions---James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans, and Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind---and Alice Randall's rewriting of Mitchell's novel, The Wind Done Gone , as a point of contrast. Hybridity is represented in the mixed-race bodies of these characters.

The immanent voice : an aspect of unreliable homodiegetic narration.De Reuck, Jennifer Anne. January 1988 (has links)
Unreliable homodiegetic narration presents a unique mode
of narrative transmission which demands the encoding within
the text of 'translational indices', that is, signifiers of
several kinds which justify the reader/receiver in
over-riding the sincere first person avowals of the apparent
mediator of the discourse. The argument establishes the
presence of an epistemologically primary 'immanent'
narrative situation within an ostensibly unitary narrative
situation. Such a stereoscopic perspective upon the
presented world of the literary 'work provides the
reader/receiver with a warrant for a rejection of the
epistemological validity of the homodiegetic narrator's
discourse. Moreover, the thesis advances a typology of such
translational indices as they occur in the dense ontology of
the literary work of art. The narratological theory of
unreliable homodiegetic narration developed in the first
half of the dissertation is applied in the second half to
selected exemplars of such narrative transmissions,
demonstrating thereby the theoretical fecundity of the model
for the discipline of narratology. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, Durban, 1988.
