Giving Voice to Black and Latino Men: First-Year Students' Perceptions of the Relative Impact of Family Support and College Aspirations on their Decisions to Enroll and Actual College Enrollment

Contreras-Godfrey, Rossanna January 2009 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Ana Martinez-Aleman / Abstract Black and Latino men have the lowest college enrollment rates among traditional college-aged students. Using a qualitative method, this study examined first-year students' perceptions of factors that influenced their plans to pursue a college education and actual enrollment. The factors this study explored were family support activities as defined by the Hossler college choice model and college aspirations factors. Currently, the experiences of first-year black and Latino men enrolled at four-year postsecondary institutions have been limited. These firsthand accounts will provide useful information to guidance counselors, school and university administrators, and policy makers interested in increasing the number of black and Latino men at four-year colleges and universities. The literature on college enrollment shows that black and Latino men have the lowest enrollment rates of all college-aged students. The college choice literature suggests that family support activities such as saving for college, visiting colleges, and attending a financial aid workshop all are influential in students' decision to enroll at a postsecondary institution. In addition, the literature on college aspirations shows that factors such as family encouragement, peers, and schools can either aid or hinder a student's plans to go to college. Yet, Hossler's college choice model and the college aspirations literature usually do not explain the college enrollment decisions of black and Latino men. In particular, a specific aim of this study is to investigate whether the college choice and college aspirations literatures' conclusions hold true for black and Latino men. In addition, this study explores whether participants' decisions to enroll are influenced by gender expectations. The results of this study were examined using a critical theory lens. The study's findings reveal that black and Latino men's college enrollment decisions are influenced in much the same ways as those of other high-school students. Parents provided the foundation along with early academic success that instilled ideas about the benefits of a college education and supported the attainment of that goal. Furthermore, participants rejected negative stereotypes associated with men of color and saw the pursuit of a postsecondary education as a challenge to these common beliefs. These findings show that men of color's college enrollment decisions are impacted by parents as well as multivariate factors that work to sustain their college enrollment goals. This information can provide school and college administrators as well as policymakers with strategies that could successfully address the problem of college transition and access for this population. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2009. / Submitted to: Boston College. Health acculturation and type 2 diabetes management among Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, and Latino adult immigrants in the US

Nguyen, Thuc-Nhi January 2015 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Thanh V. Tran / Diabetes management is a major part of treatment but many ethnic/racial minorities with type 2 diabetes do not make the needed adjustment. A key component of healthcare access is health acculturation, defined as a level of success in navigating the mainstream healthcare system. The overall goal of this study is to develop a measure of health acculturation and examine its relationship with diabetes management across several ethnic minority groups in the US. The first purpose is to investigate the relationship between health acculturation and type 2 diabetes management behaviors in a sample of foreign-born Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean and Latino adults. The second purpose is to assess ethnic differences by testing the interaction between health acculturation and ethnicity on diabetes management behaviors. Merged dataset from CHIS 2009 and 2011-2 were used for analysis. Multiple and logistic regression analysis revealed that those with high health acculturation skills performed more diabetes management than their counterparts. Latinos performed better than all Asian subgroups on most diabetes management behaviors regardless of the level of health acculturation. The study has implications for social workers and healthcare providers working with ethnic and minority populations. The results suggest that the health acculturation measure would be a good screening tool to identify immigrant populations who will most benefit from health intervention within the culture of western medicine. In addition, the results help to identify specific skills and tools needed by social workers and healthcare providers to better serve these populations. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2015. / Submitted to: Boston College.

This paper was divided into two parts, as it deals with research where topics complement each other, without giving up their individual importance. These topics are the figure of the pianist Beatriz Balzi and the Latin American piano art music. Their paths crossed in 1984, the year when Beatriz Balzi started a series of recordings of this repertoire, registering pieces composed from 1898 to 1997 in a CD collection under the title of Latin American Composers. A wide range of techniques, styles and compositional procedures were exemplified by Beatriz Balzi in the 54 pieces of her CD series. Originated from 13 countries, such compositions testify the formation of this continent\'s cultural heritage, in the period when it struggled to be recognized for its own characteristics. This conclusion emerges from the analysis carried out on the scores used by the above-mentioned pianist in her recordings, together with the study of the inserts attached to the CDs, the listening to them, and the interviews with recorded composers. A summarized historical panorama of the XX Century\'s classical music was formulated in order to contextualize this repertoire. On its turn, Beatriz Balzi\'s biography and the dissertation on her trajectory in the completion of the Latin American Composers series, unpublished material which was distinctive in the decade in which it was created, give rise to the following question: why would the pianist devote herself to such a task, instead of embracing a repertoire which would be more accessible to herself and to the audience? The answer that echoes is the militancy for the valuing of these authors\' music as well as their own valuing, in addition to bringing together the peoples of this continent by means of mutual knowledge. Although this type of research has attracted the attention of the XXI Century musicians and scholars, the Latin American art music has always been relegated to a less important place in the universe of the Western concert music. Beatriz Balzi\'s series and the present paper contribute to fill this gap.

A inserção de Brasil e México na integraçãoo latino-americana: a UNASUL e a Aliança do Pacífico / Brazil\'s and Mexico\'s insertion in latin american integration: UNASUR and Pacific Alliance

Naddi, Beatriz Walid de Magalhães 13 April 2018 (has links)
Recent Latin American integration has experienced a spreading of different integration proposals. In this sense, the different regional insertion strategies adopted by the main economies of the region stands out: Brazil between the governments Lula (2003-2010) and Dilma (2011-2014) and Mexico during Fox (2000-2006), Calderón (2006-2012) and Peña Nieto (2012-) governments. This master thesis seeks to analyze, therefore, the insertion of Brazil and Mexico in Latin American integration, taking as a fundamental center of analysis the initiatives of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the Pacific Alliance, respectively. For this, the theoretical framework of the Marxist Theory of Dependency is used, which understands both Brazil and Mexico as countries inserted in a dependent way in the world capitalist system. Based on that, this master thesis makes a historical perspective on the Latin American insertion, from the first attempts in the nineteenth century. Next, the insertions of Brazil and Mexico in Latin American integration are analyzed. Finally, in a comparative chapter, the similarities and differences between their strategies are identified and analyzed.

Orientador: Brunno Vinicius Gonçalves Vieira / Banca: José Eduardo dos Santos Lohner / Banca: Luis Augusto Schmidt Totti / Banca: Cláudio Aquati / Banca: Márcio Thamos / Resumo: O presente trabalho tem como objeto as tragédias Oedipus e Phoenissae, escritas em meados do século I d.C. pelo autor latino Lucius Annaeus Seneca (4 a.C.? - 65 d.C.). It consists of a critical study on the expressiveness of the Latin text by means of the proposal of an expressive translation in Portuguese for these two dramas. In other words, this work intends to investigate and describe the stylistic language of Seneca in the corpus in order to rehearse his transposition into Portuguese. It will be done: 1) an analysis of the Latin texts, 2) an appreciation of the translation of Oedipus by Candido Lusitano, and 3) an expressive translation of such tragedies. In this wise, we aim at defining the main characteristics of stylistic idiom of Seneca in the corpus and reflecting on its transposition into Portuguese - in our translation of both tragedies and in Candido Lusitano's translation of Oedipus (from 18th century). Lusitano's version was the only poetic and metrified translation of Oedipus we had until this paper - all Phoenissae translation into Portuguese are in prose. Since such tragedies are the only ones that deal with the myth of Labdacids, we chose them. Thus, a complete approach is possible concerning how Seneca treated the myth of Oedipus. The concept of stylistic idiom concerns the stylistic affinity required for a translation to be equivalent to the source text. Both tragedies - as dramatic poems - contain an abundant and sophisticated use of expressive resources, commonly classified as figures of speech, as well as by the stylistic expedients present in the phonic, lexical, morphosyntactic and metrical planes. This work consists of an investigation of how to orchestrate expression and content in the poetic utterance, offering an expressive translation, or, in other words... Trans-formação do ator no teatro de grupo em latino-américa: Abya Yala, Yuyachkani e Ói Nóis Aqui Traveiz / Actor trans-formation in latin american theater group: Abya Yala, Yuyachkani and Ói Nóis Aqui Traveiz

Gina Maria Monge Aguilar 14 October 2013 (has links)
This thesis aims to identify and analyze the pedagogical principles of the processes of trans-formation of the actor that Abya Yala (Costa Rica), Yuyachkani (Peru) and Ói Nóis Aqui Traveiz (Brazil) developed throughout its history and discuss how they could be of great value in the formation of actors in several instances. This thesis is based mainly on interviews and visits to the groups, as well as the study of written and audio-visual material on the topic. Drama is a cultural construction that changes according to time, place and context in which it develops. Similarly the formation of actors answers to those same variables. Coupled to the group´s practices on scene it is build a pedagogy for trans-formation. We identified some common ground between them as they engage both politically, with the country´s situation, and regarding the training of the actors. All three groups demonstrate a quest for the actors independence as creators, responsible for their choices and their role within the group. They also reveal their emphasis on sharing their experience, as they encourage the actors to be facilitators of processes both inside and outside of the collective. This research has brought to light the importance of maintaining contact with the Latin American way of doing theatre, revealing a wealth of diversity of the proposed trans-formative processes that go beyond the group environment, and how they can be taken as an example to other actor-forming processes.

First, it shows the difficulties of the theme such as the semantic issue related to the term evangelical and the transdenominationality concerning the charismatic ways of living the Christian faith. It also briefly overviews the academic studies about protestantism and evangelicalism in which it fits. Then, it presents ways of dealing with the specific problematic of this research. In a second moment, this research faces the question regarding the political and religious field where Latin American evangelicalism develops its identity, presenting its major formative characters: Catholicism, ecumenism and fundamentalism. Last, it makes a discursive analysis of the final documents of the most important Latin American evangelical congresses, conferences, and the Lausanne Congress (1974). So Evangelicalism is seen like a historical product in close connection with the political, social and religious context of the studied decades. It is both fruit of fundamentalism, from which it develops its antiecumenism, as of the ecumenism, from which it inherits questions about the missiological praxis. From multiple factors and study models which include cinema, the aim is to analyze the movement of the creative process between the works "La increíble y triste historia de la cándida Eréndira y su abuela desalmada" (1972) by García Márquez and the film Eréndira (1983) by Ruy Guerra. In addition to looking after a relationship of analysis in which the film is only based on the story, it is sought to think how the cultural contexts of the artists and the potential representatives of the media resignify readings that are materialized by creating an interpenetration of the artistic discourses. Therefore, this paper strives to present cross-readings that make it possible to understand treatments of cultural issues in the story from the point of view of cinematographic resources and the same in reverse.

A Multilevel Analysis of Student, Family, and School Factors Associated with Latino/a Parental Involvement in the Middle School Learning Environment

Chain, Jennifer 21 November 2016 (has links)
Research suggests parental home and school involvement improves multiple outcomes for middle school students, including academic achievement, school engagement, motivation, self-efficacy, and prosocial behaviors. Little is known, however, about multilevel factors associated with Latino/a parental involvement in the middle school learning environment. In the current study, multilevel analysis was used to explore student, family, and school factors associated with Latino/a parental involvement. Results from the hierarchical linear modeling analyses found (a) Latino/a parental home and school involvement varied within schools and between schools, (b) student gender, prosocial behavior, and academic achievement were positively associated with parental home involvement, and (c) student gender, problem behavior, prosocial behavior, academic achievement, and family socioeconomic status were positively associated with parental school involvement. Percentages of Latino/a students and low-income students in schools did not significantly moderate the average parental home or school involvement across students and across schools. The results of this study have implications for educators and policy makers to promote Latino/a parent-teacher collaboration in the middle school learning environment.

Uns epigramas, certas mulheres: a misoginia nos \"Epigrammata\" de Marcial (40 d.C - 104 d.C) / Some epigrams, some women: the misogyny in the \"Epigrammata\" of Martial (40 d.C - 104 d.C)

Agnolon, Alexandre 16 October 2007 (has links)
The aims of the present work are first, to list, translate and analyse Martial\'s epigrams in which women are the object of invective; second, to try to investigate, in the former tradition, the theme of misogyny, both in Greece (from Hesiod, in the celebrated episode of Pandora (Teogony, vv. 570-612), to the archaic iambic poets, Archilochus, Hipponax and Semonides), and in Rome (how misogyny, as a tópos, is treatead by Catullus, Horace and Juvenal). In the third place, the present research intends to study in what manner epigram, or more precisely, its vituperative possibility, appropriated the theme of misogyny, adapting it to the main characteristics of the genre, such as conciseness and acuteness. Finally, we attempt to demonstrate that the vituperation against women, in Martial, is regulated and perceived through various rhetorical practices (such as the progymnásmata) and trópoi (such as ekphrasis) that at the poet\'s time were an important part of the citizen\'s education. Therein, we intend to study, in particular, the analogies that the invective maintain, in Martial\'s epigrams, non only with the construction of images in which women are corrupted, but also with the relationship between these images and the epidictic genre.
