"Behind the cotton wool": Everyday Life and the Gendered Experience of Modernity in Modernist Women's FictionThomson, Tara S. 09 May 2014 (has links)
This dissertation examines everyday life in selected works by Dorothy Richardson, Virginia Woolf, and Katherine Mansfield. It builds on recent scholarship by Bryony Randall (2007) and Liesl Olson (2009), who have argued that modernism marks a turn to the mundane or the ordinary, a view that runs contrary to the long-established understanding of modernism as characterized by its stylistic difficulty, high culture aesthetics, and extraordinary moments. This study makes a departure from these seminal critical works, taking on a feminist perspective to look specifically at how modernist authors use style to enable inquiry into women’s everyday lives during the modernist period. This work draws on everyday life studies, particularly the theories of Henri Lefebvre, Michel de Certeau, and Rita Felski, to analyze what attention to the everyday can tell us about the feminist aims and arguments of the literary texts.
The literary works studied here include: Dorothy Richardson’s Pilgrimage (predominantly the fourth volume, The Tunnel), Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse and The Waves, and Katherine Mansfield’s “Bliss” and “Marriage à la Mode.” This dissertation argues that these works reveal the ideological production of everyday life and how patriarchal power relations persist through mundane practices, while at the same time identifying or troubling sites of resistance to that ideology. This sustained attention to the everyday reveals that the transition from Victorian to modern gender roles was not all that straightforward, challenging potentially simplistic discourses of feminist progress. Literary technique and style are central to this study, which claims that Richardson, Woolf, and Mansfield use modernist stylistic techniques to articulate women’s particular experiences of everyday life and to critique the ideological production of everyday life itself. Through careful analysis of their various uses of modernist technique, this dissertation also challenges the vague or uncritical uses of the term ‘stream of consciousness’ that have long dominated modernist studies.
This dissertation makes several original contributions to modernist scholarship. Its sets these three authors alongside one another under the rubric of everyday life to see what reading them together reveals about feminist modernism. The conclusions herein challenge the notion of an essentializing ‘feminine’ modernism that has largely characterized discussion of these authors’ common goals. This dissertation also contributes a new reading of bourgeois everydayness in Mansfield’s stories, and is the first to discuss cycling as a mode of resistance to domesticity in The Tunnel. It argues for the ‘mobile space’ of cycling as a supplement to the common symbol of feminist modernism, the ‘room of one’s own.’ The reading herein of Woolf’s contradictory approach to the everyday challenges the accepted view among Woolf scholars that her theory of ‘moments of being’ has transformative power in everyday life. This thesis is about the processes and attitudes behind building production as it is about architecture as such, and it aims at understanding architecture& / #8217 / s critical capacity and its relation to wider society. In this context, the differing attitudes and orientations in the construction of the residential environments in Dü / zce after the two unsettling earthquakes that took place in 1999 are believed to provide a study field, where the relationship between architecture and different economic, political and cultural structures that constitute civil society can be examined. Against this backdrop, our discussion will concentrate on the specific housing concerns and solutions proposed by three different groups, namely: & / #8216 / Solidarity Houses Project& / #8217 / realized by the villagers of Gö / lyaka, settlement proposal for Gö / lyaka prepared by the Project Implementation Unit of Prime Ministry and the struggle of the Dü / zce Depremzedeler Dernegi for tenants& / #8217 / rights.
The examination of these case studies will be based on our reading of Henri Lefebvre& / #8217 / s & / #8216 / Production of Space& / #8217 / and particularly his analytical categories: physical, mental and social space. The relation between this theoretical framework and the case studies will be a reciprocal one, in which the analysis on the three examples of house production will both utilize the analytical framework and be an instrument for understanding it. Although considered separately, the concepts we discuss in each chapter are inextricably interwoven. At the end what we aim to outline is a more total
picture of the character of the redevelopment processes after the 1999 Marmara earthquakes and represent architectural practice in its complexity.

Fertile soil: The production of Prefigurative Territories by the Indignados movement in BarcelonaAsara, Viviana, Kallis, Giorgos January 2018 (has links) (PDF)
Social movements do not only protest and demand political change - they produce new spaces too. Why and
how? If we understand this, we can appreciate better the specificity and potential of the last cycle of
mobilizations involving the encampment of cities' squares. This paper shows how the Indignados movement
in Barcelona evolved from symbolizing an alternative future in the square to constructing alternatives in the
city after. We find that people in alternative projects re-appropriate and transform urban space because they
want to live differently and produce a radically different city, now. We conceptualize these new spaces as
"prefigurative territories", integrating the seemingly divergent anarchist theory of prefiguration with Lefebvre's
Marxist theory of space production. Prefigurative projects have strategic horizons and struggle with conflicts
when opening up. Against those charging the Indignados with a fetishization of the occupied square and a
failure to achieve political goals, we argue for the continuing relevance of the movement as it moved from the
production of differential, to the production of counter-spaces. Further research should investigate how these
counter-spaces feed into processes of political change. / Series: SRE - Discussion Papers

The study aims to present the notion of rhythmanalysis in relation to the city environment and aims to apply the theory to field research. The theoretical part focuses on the semiotic conception of the rhythm, on the position of rhythmanalysis in the work of its father, Henri Lefebvre and it further tackles the topic and its applications in Czech and also international context. Following this approach, it clarifies a wide range of related conceptions and phenomenons. It finds common points of reference in philosophy, semiotics, critical theory, urbanism, social geography, art and other fields, which is determined by its interdisciplinary nature. The practical part relates the previously mentioned theoretical foundations to applied, empirical research. It observes and reveals the rhythms of Prague area named Vltavská, it analyzes and interprets them and shows the rhythmanalysis as a legitimate analytical instrument with a potential value for urbanism.

Syftet med studien är att undersöka hur lärare (n=7) berättar, genom semistrukturerade intervjuer att de använder utomhusmiljön i sin undervisning inom de naturorienterande ämnena. Studien utgår ifrån teorin ”produktionen av rum” som används som analysverktyg. Studien har delats upp i tre problemområden, lärares uppfattningar om utomhusmiljön som plats för lärande, föreställningar om utomhusmiljön som plats för lärande och relationer samt till utomhusmiljön som plats för lärande. Resultatet visar att lärarna har liknande uppfattningar om utomhusmiljön som plats för lärande. De delar även ett gemensamt förhållningssätt när de talar om deras föreställningar om utomhusmiljön. Slutsatsen mynnar ut i att lärare anser att utomhusmiljön passar för undervisning. Några av lärarna ansåg att det passade som ett komplement till inomhusundervisningen, till exempel när elever lär sig om ett träds livsmiljö, blir det mer konkret i utomhusundervisningen. Det resulterar i ett meningsfullt lärande. För att bedriva utomhusundervisning påpekar ett flertal lärare att lektionerna behöver vara längre och fler resurser krävs för att stötta upp. När de talar om att stötta upp menar lärarna att de anser att en pedagog utomhus inte räcker till. När de vistas i större utrymmen känner några av lärarna sig otrygga med att vara ensamma. Det kan handla om att det är svårt att hålla koll på alla elever samtidigt eller se till att alla hänger med i undervisningen.

Utifrån sex intervjuer med kolloledare, som uppsatsen baseras på, framkommer att en tydlig skiljelinje görs mellan kollo och livet utanför. Kollo beskrivs som en särskild och annorlunda värld. För intervjupersonerna innebär arbetet på kollo att separeras från sin vanliga kontext för att istället bli del av ett nytt och relativt slutet sammanhang. Genom att bland annat tillämpa Michel Foucaults idéer om heterotopier och antropologen Victor Turners tankar om liminalitet och communitas skapas förståelse för hur kollo som rum inverkar på ledarnas villkor, förutsättningar, handlingsmöjligheter, relationer, tankar, sinnesstämningar och kroppsuppfattningar. Vad berättar en badort? : Ideologi, materia och mening i HSB:s Årsta havsbad / Lessons from a seaside resort : Ideology, matter and meaning in the construction of a cooperative resort in Sweden 1929–1931Elfström Berg, Karolina January 2022 (has links)
The Swedish cooperative housing company, known as HSB, was formed in 1923 as a result of a nationwide mobilization of tenants from mid 1800’s and forward. In 1929, they entered a new area of production by the planning and creation of Sweden’s first cooperative seaside resort, named Årsta havsbad. The purpose of this project was to offer affordable and accessible recreational housing to working class families living in any of the appartements owned by HSB in the city of Stockholm. The aim of this thesis is to examine how Årsta havsbad was constructed as a social product during its early establishment around 1920–1931. Drawing on the spatial theory developed by French sociologist Henri Lefebvre in his 1974 book The production of space, the study seeks to identify how ideology, spatial practices and imaginaries simultaneously operated in the constitution of Årsta havsbad. The material analyzed are writings and pictures of HSB’s own newspaper Vår Bostad, as well as pictures, movies and additional press material. The study finds that HSB played a dominant role in shaping the practices and values of its intended inhabitants. Through the highly visual propaganda, HSB advocated for modernist views of domestic, social and environmental values. This left little to no space for conflicting ideas and behaviors. Furthermore, Årsta havsbad can be seen as a material manifestation of the inner conflicts of modernity, cutting through dichotomies such as individual/collective, city/countryside and nature/culture.
