In recent decades, studies in Lexicology have been developed considerably, especially in relation to theoretical discussions about lexical works. Alongside this, lexicography, which distinguishes it as the art of making dictionaries, has also witnessed a great progress, especially with respect to new parameters for the construction of dictionaries. Thus, new areas of interest gain prominence within the lexical studies such as the pedagogical lexicography, which refers to studies of works devoted to apprentices. Our work, therefore, following the principles of metalexicography, which deals with analysis and criticism of the lexical works, aims to describe and analyze the system of cross-references in two learnerâs dictionaries, namely Mini AurÃlio jr. (2005) and Mini Houaiss (2004). For this, randomly selected from nine entries, in the nomenclature of the work in question. The entries selected belong to three grammatical categories - noun, adjective and verb - once that these grammatical categories have a high productivity of words in the Portuguese language, favoring thus the establishment of references in dictionaries. We present the description of the cross-references in the two dictionaries under review, noting the variation in relation to the indices used for reference. The results of analyses show a discrepancy between metalexicographic principles and what is actually presented in terms of medioestructure in learnerâs dictionaries. This results is an impairment of the flow of information between entries in the dictionaries.

PELIKÁN, Simona, Bc.: Gallicisms in Russian language [Master Thesis]. Charles University. Faculty of Arts; Institute of East European Studies. Master thesis instructor: Mgr. Jana KITZLEROVÁ, Ph.D. Graduate degree designation: Master (Mgr.). Praha, UK, FF, ÚVES, 2016. Pages 116. The subject of thesis is to analyze the issues of gallicisms in Russian language. It focuses mainly on the frequency of gallicisms in Russian during the various stages of historical development from the first contact of languages to the present. The aim of this work is to determine as well as explain the French influence on Russian vocabulary, explore today's language situation and demonstrate acquired knowledge on selected lexical units grouped in the final analysis of the thesis. In introduction, the work is devoted to the characteristics of historical relations between Russia and France. It concentrates particularly on the important milestones in the historical development of Russia limited by the reign of specific sovereigns. The thesis then describes the theoretical knowledge of linguistic borrowings and loan words in Russian. It also defines the specific attributes of French loan words in Russian language and their level of adaptation. In the section devoted to the analysis of selected gallicisms, the work generalizes...

Pledges and agreements in Old English : a semantic field studyAmmon, Matthias Richard January 2011 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the Old English word field for the concepts of ‘pledges’ and agreements by analysing the words belonging to the field in their contextual environments. The particular focus is on the word wedd (‘pledge’), which is shown to have different connotations in different text types. The main subject of the study is the corpus of Anglo-Saxon legal texts in which pledges played an important part. Pledges occur in collocation with concepts such as oaths (að) and sureties (borg), but there are important differences in function and linguistic usage between the terms. One important aspect of the language of pledging is the formulaic word pair að and wedd which comes to stand for the entirety of legal interactions, as no single word for ‘legal agreement’ is used by authors of legal prose. Possibly in part influenced by this development, the meaning of wedd, which originally denoted an object given as a pledge, becomes more abstract. The study further argues that this development is facilitated by the influence of Christianity. Old English words were required to express unfamiliar aspects of the new religion. I analyse words used to translate biblical covenants in detail. Because of its specifically legal overtones, wedd was employed by Anglo-Saxon translators and commentators to take on the functions of Latin words with a wider range of meaning, such as foedus or pactum. In its narrower sense wedd is important in the theology of sacraments. I show that the Eucharist and baptism are modelled on types of pledges from the legal social world that would have been familiar to Anglo-Saxon homilists and their audience. That this is a conscious decision on the part of Anglo-Saxon authors is indicated by the fact that this aspect is often added to their adaptations of orthodox Latin sources. An analysis of pledging in Old English poetry shows that wedd was rarely used by Anglo-Saxon poets, even in the adaptation of biblical texts which were shown to employ wedd as a deliberate lexical choice in their prose versions. In poetry, the equivalent term is wær (‘agreement’ or ‘treaty’). I argue that this difference can be explained by the fact that wedd was a technical term, belonging to the register of legal language, where wær never occurs. It is argued that wedd, possibly because of its legal connotations, was not a common word for Old English poets and is only used occasionally, mostly for purposes of poetic variation. I suggest that this is connected to the early date of some of the poems and to the traditional and possibly slightly archaic nature of Old English poetic language.

The Egyptian language at the time of the nineteenth dynastyBlumsohn, David 06 1900 (has links)
The Nineteenth Dynasty, which ushered in the Ramesside period in ± 1308 B.C.E.
is an important period in which to study the development of the Egyptian
language, falling as it does between the time of the Middle Egyptian (ME) idiom
and the Late Egyptian (LE) language. Regarding the Egyptian language,
Gardiner (1982:1) writes" ... the idiom in which the public records of the Twentieth
Dynasty are couched differs widely from that found, for example in the royal
decrees of the Sixth Dynasty". There was a gradual change from a "synthetic"
language in ME into an "analytical" one in LE and later Coptic. The synthetic
tenses are first supplemented and then gradually replaced by "analytic" forms.
And this happened during the time of the Nineteenth Dynasty.
This thesis addresses the Nineteenth Dynasty texts, with respect to grammar,
semantics and syntax (mainly verbal forms). It studies the occurrence of Middle
Egyptian synthetic forms and Late Egyptian analytic forms in the Nineteenth
Dynasty texts and makes observations on forms which appear to be unique to the
Nineteenth Dynasty Egyptian (NDE) too.
This study describes and analyses the language, both in a synchronic way - "frozen"
in its time (as a type of grammar book), and comparing literary and non-literary
uses of the time, - and in a diachronic manner, seeking to show the evolution and
development of language forms, their ancestors and their successors.
A study of these texts as shown in this thesis demonstrates that the written
language of the Nineteenth Dynasty is a unique blend of grammatical and
syntactic forms: pure ME forms, LE literary and non-literary forms, as well as
forms peculiar to NDE. Thus NDE is "an independent self-sufficient system,
which is neither Middle Egyptian nor Late Egyptian of the Twentieth Dynasty."

On uneven ground : the multiple and contested natures(s) of environmental restorationSmith, Laura January 2009 (has links)
Environmental restoration is emerging as a major driver in the repair and reversal of some of the world’s most severely degraded landscape systems, with growing interest in the status and composition of restoration efforts. Although much has already been written about the theory and practice of environmental restoration, both positive and negative, hitherto the literature has tended to overlook the complexity bound up in defining restoration discourses, and perhaps more importantly, the physical, material consequences instilled through such human choice. The mutability of discourses of environmental restoration means that it can be moulded and (re-)shaped by different actors and contexts, with different values and meanings attached to ‘nature’. There exist multiple and contested natures of environmental restoration - nature(s) both in the sense o f the properties of restoration, and also that which is restored to a site. In this doctoral thesis, I demonstrate how discourses of environmental restoration are defined and interpreted, which discourses (if any) appear to dominate, and how these are mobilised to produce ‘restored nature’. Attention is also awarded to the environmental implications incurred when such discourses are played out on the ground. The research is grounded empirically through reference to the case studies o f the Eden Project (Cornwall, UK), the National Forest Company (Derbyshire, UK), and the Walden Woods Project (Lincoln, MA) and their adoption of restoration practices. Analysing the processes and practices of environmental restoration within a framework of social nature and cultural landscapes serves to destabilise the dualism distancing nature from society - a preserve of environmental ethics and philosophy - for such synergy not only highlights how ideas of (restored) nature are socially constructed, but also addresses the material production of nature, reinforcing the interactions between natural and societal actors.

Uhlalutyo lwesemantiki yelekhisikoni yezenzi u-bamba no-gcina no-londoloza kwisiXhosaMacingwane, Vuyani 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2005 / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study explores the lexical semantic analysis of -bamba, -gcina and -Iondoloza.
In chapter 1 the aim of the study is stated. Properties about the lexical semantic analysis
of the verbs -bamba, -geina, and -Iondoloza as well as the generative lexicon theory by
Pustejovsky (1996) are discussed. The theoretical framework and the organisation of
study are also discussed in this chapter.
Chapter 2 addresses in more detail the type system for semantics. A generative theory of
the lexicon includes multiple levels of representation for different types of lexical
information needed. Among such levels are Argument Structure, Event Structure, Qualia
Structure and Leical Inheritance Structure. Chapter 2 also represents in more detail thé
structure of qualia and the role they play in distributing the functional behaviour of words
and phrases in composition.
Chapter 3 examines the lexical semantic analysis of the verbs -bamba, -gcina and -
londoloza to account for the range of selectional properties of the NP subject argument of
these verbs, and the various interpretations that arise in terms of composition with their
complement arguments. The polysemous behaviour of the verbs -bamba, -gcina and -
londoloza are examined in sentence alternation constructions with respect to event
structure properties. The lexical representation in terms of argument structure and the
event structure of the verbs -bamba, -gcina and -Iondoloza in different sentences are
also investigated.
Chapter 4 is the conclusion, summarising the findings of all the previous chapters in this
study on lexical semantic analysis of the 'hold' verbs -bamba, -gcina and -Iondoloza in
Xhosa.

The classificatory system of human features in SesothoMokhokhoba, Mamotheba Mataelo. 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The classificatory system for features of humans in Sesotho has been investigated to show the
unique nature of such human features. There are various models to handle the lexicon of a
language and one of these models has been applied to Sesotho, i.e. the theory of the
Generative lexicon.
In chapter one attention has been given to the purpose of the study as well as various
problems within lexical semantics such as lexical ambiguity.
Chapter two is concerned with the theory of lexical semantics in which attention has been
given to the various levels of representation of a noun in the lexicon. A representation has
been given of the semantic entry of a noun in the Sesotho lexicon.
Chapter three has the core of the study which investigates the semantic features of human
nouns in Sesotho. Various semantic categories have been found within which such human
nouns may be classified. The major categories contain nouns of humans with various physical
and psychological features as well as nouns with features of various types of behaviour and
features of wealth vs. poverty.
Chapter four contains the conclusions of the study.
'n Voorstelling is
gegee van die semantiese representasie van 'n naamwoord in die Sesotho leksikon.
Hoofstuk drie bevat die kern van die studie wat handeloor semantiese kenmerke VIr
