Soudní tlumočení pro nerodilé mluvčí v trestním řízení (ČR) / Court interpreting for non-native speakers in criminal proceedings (Czech Republic)

Koudelková, Zuzana January 2016 (has links)
The aim of the present theoretical-empirical thesis is to present the topic of court interpreting for non-native speakers, focusing on criminal proceedings in the Czech Republic. At first, the study looks into the context of Czech court interpreting, taking into account interpreters' tasks in individual stages of criminal proceedings and concentrating on communication situations in which non-native speakers take part. The topic of the second chapter is interpreting for non- native speakers in general. This chapter consists of findings and conclusions of studies published by Michaela Albl-Mikasa as well as other authors who address the topic of conference interpreting through lingua franca. The third chapter looks into interpreting for non- native speakers in the area of court interpreting. It is based on an analysis of findings obtained by lingua franca research in the field of conference interpreting against the background of general court interpreting theories. The empirical part provides a description of research based on hypotheses of a survey carried out by Michaela Albl-Mikasa transferred into the context of Czech court interpreting in criminal proceedings. The aim is to find whether interpreters, judges, state prosecutors, police officers and lawyers use different strategies when...

Bilingvismus na sociálních sítích: užívání češtiny a angličtiny českými uživateli sociální sítě Facebook / Bilingualism on Social Networks: The Use of Czech, English and other languages among Czech users of Facebook

Pilzová, Zuzana January 2012 (has links)
The main goal of this thesis is to find and describe the evidence of bilingual communication of English language among Czech users of the social network Facebook. A qualitative method of both text document and semi-structured interviews with six active users was used to describe the type of bilingualism which occurs in the social media environment, in what situations and what is the user's motivation behind it. Therefore the main theoretical approaches I focus on are bilingualism and its place in the Czech Republic and the role of the English language in this socio-culture context. Furthermore I study the communication in an online environment: what are the specifications and what role does the CMC (computer-mediated-communication) play in relationship of the language and the user. Finally, I search for previous studies in the field of online bilingualism, social media preferably. The results show not only the Czech users are well situated within the discourse of English as (online) lingua franca, moreover they seem to be very active in self-imposed code-switching into the English language. The data acquired through the interviews helped to identify bilingualism occurs on both levels of code-switching and code-mixing. Additionally, Anglicism's in the Czech language were reported widely.

Etnická identita a konflikt (na príklade multietnického priestoru zaoceánskych lodí). / Ethnic Identity and conflict (on the Example of Multiethnic Territory of Cruise Ships)

Medvecká, Zuzana January 2014 (has links)
In my doctoral thesis, which I have elaborated on the basis of my diploma thesis Doubled Identity of Crew Members on Cruise Ships as the Instrument of Cultural Adaptation, supervised by Mgr. Helena Tužinská, PhD., I have analysed the way of life of crew members sharing the multiethnical territory of cruise ships. Crew members working there come from over 50 different countries. In spite of their different origins and cultures which have been forming their behaviour and way of thinking, they share small space without any conflicts. My goal is to sum up the basic conditions which should be met in any multiethnical society to ensure that there would not be any conflicts between its habitants. According to my hypothesis there is a need of other than ethnical identity which could unify them on other than ethnical basis. In the territory of cruise ships it is the socio-professional identity of 'crew member '. I found out that there are two main factors responsible for successful co-existence of people from different cultures here - communication and the system of values. That is why from all factors in which we can observe socio-professional identity of crew members I preferably analyse rules and norms established by crew members and lingua franca used on cruise ships called 'ship language'. The specific...

Fossilization : a case study of an adult learner

De Wit, Veronica Diane 06 1900 (has links)
Linguistic fossilization is a prevalent phenomenon in adult ESLA and presents a perpetual pedagogical challenge to teachers. Despite controversy about the theoretical concept, research is increasingly showing that persistent erroneousness cannot be attributed to single causal factors. This single case study examines controversial aspects surrounding the concept and formulates criteria for identifying fossilization. The study investigates the conversational output of an independent adult learner over a period of nine months and presents a holistic exploration of causal influences. The findings substantiate that fossilization arises from changing combinations of factors, and that such combinations are unique to the situation of each adult learner. The key to the successful treatment of fossilized errors may lie in identifying their roots, which can be achieved by analyzing output and through discussion with learners in order to gain insight into their experience of the learning process. Results also suggest that a critical perspective on the theoretical construct is needed in order to investigate the phenomenon in adult second language acquisition. / Linguistics and Modern Languages / M.A. (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL))

Three Swedish students’ experiences of EMI at three Swedish universities : Semi-structured interviews exploring preparedness, content acquisition and conceptualisations of English

Keay, Adam January 2020 (has links)
This paper aims to explore Swedish students’ experiences of English-medium instruction (EMI) in Swedish higher education. Previous research shows that students’ experiences of EMI in higher education are closely related to attitudes towards the proficiencies of lecturers and peers, which in turn are based on students’ conceptualisations of English. Through the use of semi-structured interviews, three interrelated themes are explored: (1) how prepared students felt they were to use English in higher education (2) students’ experiences of acquiring content through English and (3) students’ underlying conceptualisations of English. Three Swedish students at different institutions and programs were interviewed. Findings show that the students had varied views of what it was to be prepared for EMI as well as how prepared they felt they were according to their own definitions. Students also had differing experiences of acquiring content through English. All three students conceptualised English as a standard, native variety. Their conceptualisations of English as a standard had implications on student-student and teacher-student interactions, which was evidenced especially in regard to international non-native speakers of English. Findings are discussed in relation to relevant previous research on EMI and the Swedish context. Finally, suggestions are made for Upper Secondary school in-class practices, for the benefit of better preparing Swedish students for higher education in Sweden by implementing an English as a lingua franca (ELF-) perspective on English spoken interaction.

Digital Games – The key to studying Cosmopolitan Democracy? : An investigation into the suitability of Games and MMORPG communities for the study of Cosmopolitan Democracy

Bridger, Matthew January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this study was to identify if digital games could be used as a method to study Cosmopolitan Democracy. Using a mixed methods approach, players of the Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) community were asked to answer a questionnaire concerning the importance of age, gender and nationality of other players, in order to see if their values aligned with those of Cosmopolitan Democracy. The questionnaire also investigated the use of the Auto-Translate feature in FFXIV to examine its usefulness as a lingua franca to bridge gaps in language equality. Furthermore a literature review on the use of digital games in education and ideologies was conducted. The results showed that the values of the FFXIV community do align with those of Cosmopolitan Democracy, that Auto-Translate successfully acts as a lingua franca, and that games have a history of teaching players about differing ideologies. The conclusions advocated the creation of a game based on Cosmopolitan Democracy, allowing for players to experience the democratic model and for researchers to gather data on its functionality.

Ruiz Barrera, Magali Augusta 17 February 2023 (has links)
Finalment, recorrem a l'eina METOOL perquè ens ajude a etiquetar, analitzar i obtindre resultats ja siga " por expresiones, por corpus o por categorías" (Carrió-Pastor, 2020, p. 266). / [EN] Language is the foundation of human communication, and we use it for a variety of purposes. This brief reflection serves to introduce the topic of this research, which is specifically related to the use of language. In this thesis, we will conduct a comparative analysis of the use of rhetoric in radio news from three countries: Spain, Peru, and the United States. For a long time, it has been said that rhetoric plays a fundamental role within the language of the media and this conception has been confirmed by the findings found in our thesis. We are aware that rhetoric does not work alone, but together, as it embraces methods such as metadiscourse and pragmatics. For example, authors such as Dafouz Milne (2000), raises the need to frame metadiscourse in a theoretical framework more in line with its characteristics and needs as rhetoric. In this thesis, we discuss metadiscourse because, in the words of Fairclough (1992), it serves as a tool used in a text when "the speaker is situated above or outside her own discourse, and is in a position to control and manipulate it" (p. 122). It is precisely in the media that one can observe the enormous influence and power they have over our societies. Within this context, throughout this thesis it will be shown how radio journalists build their discourse, in their respective languages -whether Spanish or English- when delivering the news. And the effects that they intend to produce on listeners will be explained in Chapter 7. This thesis seeks to establish parallels and discrepancies between the use of metadiscursive strategies found in radio discourse in Spain, Peru, and the United States on the topics of politics and current events. In order to achieve this, we decided to work with the taxonomy proposed by Hyland in 2005, which is classified into two categories, textual and interpersonal. This decision stems from the fact that this model allows us to observe the way news presenters organize their discourse and the relationship they establish with their listeners through them. In addition, Hyland's classification is frequently used in research and is respected among academics as a valid model. The results gathered allow us to understand the forms of persuasion that are given in Spanish and English in relation to the type of discourse that we chose to analyze. Due to the nature of the research, we offer quantitative and qualitative results, which from our point of view, leads to a more complete understanding. Finally, we relied on the METOOL analysis tool to help us label, analyze and obtain results either "por expresiones, por corpus o por categorías" (Carrió-Pastor, 2020, p. 266). / Ruiz Barrera, MA. Towards vocational translation in German studies in Nigeria and beyond

Oyetoyan, Oludamilola Iyadunni 30 August 2016 (has links) (PDF)
