This dissertation reconsiders the creative and strategic crisscrossings among the African diaspora’s literary and cultural productions, paying special attention to the status and influence of Black America(ns), as a point of reference, on African and Afro-descendant writers working in French. Building upon the works of Paul Gilroy on the one hand, and Frida Ekotto on the other, I trace a major literary lineage in Afro-diasporic literature that revolves around the question of legibility. The texts studied in this dissertation are linked by their focus on a hermeneutic that is deployed along two main lines of thought. At the diegetic level, how are the characters being (mis)read by other members of the African diaspora, and reciprocally, how do the characters see these other members of the African diaspora and situate themselves in relation to them? At the meta-level, how does this reading system, or system of knowledge acquisition, invite or highlight a critique of genre (and gender) conventions and classifications? More specifically, I look at how writers such as Maryse Condé, Alain Mabanckou, and Léonora Miano establish affiliative ties with their Anglophone peers— Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, Teju Cole, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie—across the Black Atlantic and across generations, in order to challenge the French system of racial and literary classification. In so doing, I argue that they also participate in shaping the figure of the contemporary black intellectual on a global scale, from a non-American black perspective. The two main objectives of my research are to situate African, Caribbean, and Afro-descendant writers working in French within a transnational literary tradition that transcends the long-lasting polemical—and today outdated—category of “Francophone Literature,” and to account for their contributions to it. / 2024-03-04T00:00:00Z

This study examines rhythm, syntax, sound, and diction in selected early and late poems from Dylan Thomas's Collected Poems. It demonstrates, on the basis of stylistic evidence, that the later poetry is the greater achievement. The early and later poems are different in the area of rhythm. Early poems are regularly metered with a strong iambic beat, and a majority of lines are end-stopped. Rhythms in the later, finer poems are irregular, and enjambed lines predominate. The later poems show an increased ability to match rhythm with meaning. Dylan Thomas's syntax is simpler on the surface than ordinarily supposed. Early poems contain restrictive relative clauses that result in complex deep structure and sentence stacking. The later poems contain appositive relative clauses, a change in style that results in greater clarity. Repetitive patterning is frequent during both poetic periods. Thomas shows his greatest virtuosity in the area of sound. Many techniques are common to both periods, but his achievement in making sound functional in the later poetry gives it greater dimension. In creating his unique poetic voice, Dylan Thomas uses both old and new devices. Common and uncommon rhetorical figures abound in both periods, but, in common with the other stylistic elements, the figures are used more effectively in the later poetry. On the basis of an examination of the stylistic elements of rhythm, syntax, sound, and diction, this study demonstrates a greater level of achievement in the last poems of Dylan Thomas.

Bibliography: pages 116-117. / The three television channels provided by the South African Broadcasting Corporation target different demographic sectors of the South African population. A survey was conducted quantifying advertisements shown on SABC 1, which caters for a mainly black audience, and on SABC3, which caters for a mainly white audience. The semiotic codes employed to engage the viewers were recorded, tabulated and measured. The differences between the codes used on each channel were compared and tested for statistical significance. Significant differences were observed in the type of speech used by the advertisements, the race of the characters, the types of products advertised, the lifestyles portrayed and the type of rhetoric used. Specific examples were subjected to textual analysis to gauge where the approaches to the audiences differed or converged. A number of strategies were observed, reflecting the advertisers' perceptions of the audiences' relationships with the economic and political establishments. Corporate advertisements often represent the diversity of South African society, establishing a corporate identity as a unifying feature. Advertisements for financial services either exploit white anxieties, or black optimism, encouraging investment or credit purchases respectively. A stereotype representing South African isolation and backwardness is often presented as a negative identity, implying a progressive alternative to which the product is integral. Allegories of societal transformation also feature, with varying moods of anxiety or excitement depending on the audience.

Good student evaluations are not always the measure of a successful class, and in spite of my consistently high student evaluations, I knew something had been lost in my classes. In an effort to revitalize my teaching, to increase both student participation and instructor satisfaction, I undertook an experiment in which I taught two sections of the same literature survey differently. One class was taught as I had, of recent years, been teaching: primarily lecture. The second class was decentralized: circled seating arrangement, all participants (including me) seated, and a required student literary response journal. Change is much easier decided upon than implemented. Instructor discomfort when climbing out of teaching ruts can be strong enough to impede progress (temporarily) but is a sure sign of growth Although the decentralized classroom increases a sense of vulnerability, it also increases camaraderie. Class discussion can and does veer in unexpected directions but also leads to unanticipated insights and increased student involvement with the material. The instructor's job becomes more complicated because although there must be latitude for a range of responses, the class discussion must not be allowed to drift totally off topic. Thus, the instructor must have the restraint to allow students to express and defend their ideas, and must not rein in apparent misdirections too quickly. To do so would risk stifling student involvement and precluding significant new insights. One casualty of increased student participation in discussion is the amount of material that can be covered. The physical arrangement of a class in a circle encourages student discussion, but that decentralization is really more a function of attitude than of physical space. An essential component of the successful discussion class is the student literary response journal. The journal encourages students to focus on and wrestle with the reading assignment. In the process they can hone their analytic skills, preview and practice articulating their ideas, generate ideas for formal essays, and receive private, non-threatening encouragement from the instructor. / Ed. La presente investigación tiene la finalidad de analizar el proceso de traducción por fans hispanoamericanos de la saga Cazadores de Sombras al traducir el libro Reina del aire y la oscuridad (2019) del inglés al español. Los fans traductores, al considerar que las traducciones oficiales previas realizadas por la Editorial Planeta no cumplieron con sus expectativas, optaron por organizarse a través de Facebook para iniciar un proceso de traducción comunitaria en línea, el cual se enfocó en producir un texto de forma rápida, pero sin perjudicar la calidad. Este estudio con enfoque cualitativo profundizará, mediante las técnicas de producción de datos de entrevista y análisis de documentos, en las etapas del proceso de traducción del equipo de fans traductores Shadowhunters contra la Ley, en la relación interna del equipo, y en la relación entre el equipo y la comunidad durante la traducción de la novela de fantasía Reina del aire y la oscuridad. / The present study aims to analyze the translation process of the book Queen of Air and Darkness (2019) of the Shadowhunters saga from English to Spanish by Hispanic fans. The fan translators considered that the previous official translations by Editorial Planeta did not fulfill their expectations. Therefore, they decided to use Facebook to start an online community translation process focused on producing a text in a short time, without compromising its quality. This qualitative study will allow us, through data production techniques such as interviews and document analysis, to learn more about the stages of the translation process of the fan translators team Shadowhunters contra la Ley. Also, it will help us to understand the internal relationship of the team and the relationship between the team and the fandom during the translation of the fantasy novel Queen of Air and Darkness. / Trabajo de investigación

När jag började skriva de här texterna hade jag endast en premiss och en något diffus bild av hur storyn skulle vara. Det skulle handla om åtta personer och en hund som blev instängda i ett skyddsrum långt ner under marken och de skulle bli kvar där. Länge. Skyddsrummet skulle vara konstruerat så att människor kan leva där under lång tid, ett sorts experiment för att se om människan kan leva under jord om ytan skulle bli obeboelig på grund av klimatförändringar. Jag ville att texten skulle växa fram medan jag skrev. Jag ville inte tänka ut för mycket på förhand med min logiska hjärna, tvärtom ville jag att det som fanns i mitt hjärta och i magen skulle tillåtas komma fram medan jag skrev. Jag ville att texten skulle växa fram intuitivt, inom en ram som var satt. Jag har skrivit och testat och misslyckats, skrivit och testat och inte riktigt kommit hela vägen. Resultatet är en lång text, men den är långt ifrån färdig. Vissa små delar är mer bearbetade, annat kommer med största säkerhet att strykas. Jag har många omskrivningar kvar att göra och jag har ändrat uppfattning om att slutresultatet nödvändigtvis måste bli en lång roman.  Min berättelse har två berättare. För tillfället berättar de både i första person, men jag har haft funderingar på om jag ska låta en eller båda istället få framträda i tredje person. Hade jag haft en mindre omständlig skapandeprocess, kanske jag redan hade kommit fram till hur det ska vara, men nu är det en gång så att jag måste pröva för att se hur det blir, innan jag kan bestämma mig. Jag tror dock att det kan bli bra att Almas och Olivias berättelser berättas växelvis och att de delvis överlappar varandra. Den sista delen av texten beskriver världen utanför skyddsrummet och hör alltså inte direkt till mitt projekt. Den har ändå kommit till under det här året och därför har den fått komma med här.

This thesis employs the literary folklorist methodology to explore personal narratives. Personal narratives told by Elizabeth (Beth) Wyatt Winn were analyzed. It was discovered that these narratives provide an eyewitness account of history, reveal world views, and encapsulate experiences into values and personal meanings. The depth of meaning found in Elizabeth (Beth) Wyatt Winn's personal narratives illustrates the importance of personal narratives in historical research and historical re-creation and simulation. Appendices include several oral interviews containing personal narratives.

"Strange Neighborhoods" is a collection of short stories chronicling the petty disputes, semi-supernatural happenings, and longing for connection which dominate the lives of its' loners and outcasts. A father attempts to quell his daughter's night terrors through paranormal means; a deer in the house disrupts a man's depressive state; a woman attempts to replace her neighbor's dog with a doppleganger; a stolen pie recipe results in a bitter feud and a search through the phone book for women of the same name.
