La présente thèse a pour principal objectif l’analyse empirique et théologique de la participation active (PA) des pratiquants dominicaux au sein de deux communautés montréalaises catholiques romaines. Les débats portant sur l’objet de l’étude sont encore ouverts eu égard aux récentes réappropriations religieuses des contemporains et aux nouveaux modes culturels. Cette thèse se penchera succinctement sur le sens historique de ce principe, pour ensuite privilégier l’évolution contemporaine des discussions. Ce sont, tout particulièrement, les catégories de participation théologale, externe, interne, communautaire et d’expérience liturgique qui constitueront le cadre d’observation qualitative de cette étude. La notion de PA est en pleine évolution depuis la réforme voulue par Vatican II. En s’appuyant sur des postures théologiques récentes, cette thèse vise à savoir comment les différents paramètres de la PA sont perçus et vécus chez certains pratiquants. Du point de vue pastoral, cette thèse prend appui sur ce courant théologique pour interroger les manières de faire participer les pratiquants pour leur faire vivre authentiquement le mystère eucharistique en s’inspirant notamment des perspectives patristiques. Elle procède aussi à l’étude de l’expérience liturgique des pratiquants suivant les traces de Join-Lambert et de Jean Séguy. Ces théologiens ont traité des problématiques liées au champ émotionnel de la liturgie, Séguy le subordonnant au rituel régulé et rationnel dans le Catholicisme romain. Tout en faisant état des dissidences théologiques concernant cette notion, sujet à controverse, cette thèse conclut que les réformes conciliaires ont eu des impacts positifs sur la pratique liturgique. Elle indique que la participation liturgique paraît moins envisagée sous l’angle d’un rapport implicatif, que d’un rapport électif à la liturgie dominicale. Exprimant des attentes à la fois rituelles rationnelles et rituelles émotionnelles, les pratiquants recherchent davantage l’expérience d’une rencontre personnelle avec Dieu, alors que certains valorisent l’assemblée elle-même. Ensuite, la thèse révèle les enjeux liés au défi ministériel. Surgit la question de la centralité de la figure du prêtre, à l’heure de la synodalité en Église. / The main focus of this thesis is the empirical and theological analysis of the active participation (AP) of Sunday churchgoers in two Roman Catholic Montreal communities. Debates on the object of the study are still open in view of the new religious reappropriations of contemporaries and new cultural modes. This thesis will briefly examine the historical meaning the notion of AP, to then focus on the contemporary evolution of the debate. It is, in particular, the categories of external, internal, community participation and liturgical experience that will constitute the qualitative observation framework of this study. The concept of PA is in full evolution since the reform desired by Vatican II. Based on recent reflections, this thesis aims to know how the different parameters of AP are perceived and experienced by some practitioners. From a pastoral point of view, this thesis is based on this theological current to question the ways of involving practitioners in order to make them live authentically the Eucharistic mystery by drawing inspiration in particular from patristic perspectives. It also proceeds to the study of the liturgical experience of practitioners following in the footsteps of Join-Lambert and Jean Séguy, theologians who have dealt with issues related to the emotional field of the liturgy, Séguy subordinating it to regulated and rational ritual in Catholicism. While noting the theological disagreements concerning this controversial notion, this thesis concludes that the conciliar reforms have had positive impacts on liturgical practice. It indicates that liturgical participation seems less envisaged from the angle of an implicative relationship, than of a selective relationship to the Sunday liturgy. Expressing both rational ritual and emotional ritual expectations, practitioners seek more the experience of a personal encounter with God, while just some value the assembly itself. Then, the thesis reveals the issues related to the ministerial challenge. The question of the centrality of the figure of the priest arises at a time when synodality in the Church is being considered.

Summaries in English and Afrikaans / This thesis embarked with the problem within the liturgy that tension exists in trying to minister justly according to the current context and trying to minister faithful to Scripture. A departing perspective is that the liturgy is the heartbeat in the congregation whereto and from where every aspect is networking. Also, that the emphasis can be on both proclaiming and celebrating in Protestant liturgies. Dialogical communication was chosen as theoretical approach together with communicative action for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The first and last chapters illustrate what is meant with the term liturgy.
The problem is stated (and investigated) that liturgy is a complicated and central phenomenon, which ought to let Reformed theology as well as a postmodern context come to their own. It is also indicated that liturgical spirituality, liturgical communication and liturgical pastorate can better be used and improved during Sunday liturgies. For the liturgy in order to serve the Reformed tradition and the postmodern context, and to uplift the three liturgical aspects of spirituality, communication and pastorate, liturgical symbols and rituals are posed as timeless agents to better the liturgy. Attention was also given to symbolism in Scripture.
This led to a model of application as a theory of praxis for the liturgical use of symbols and rituals. The core of this model or theory of praxis, is:
I. The highest priority in liturgical symbolism will always be to promote the holy Trinity and Biblical principles.
II. The supplementary use of right-brain components, such as experience, emotion and music.
III. A high premium on active participation and repetition.
IV. An approach of simplicity and soberness.
V. Relevance to the culture and context of the day.
VI. Services that take hold of total persons and focus on multiple senses and corporeality (bodily involvement).

VII. Room for transendence, imagination and mystic worship of God.
VIII. Actions and services that embrace diversity, pluralism and generative variety.
IX. Meetings where pastoral and therapeutic dimensions are included.
X. Celebration and positive experiences in meetings.
XI. The use of images, stories, metaphors and icons.
XII. The use of meta-communicative principles such as attitude, intention and high validation of other people. / Hierdie proefskrif het vertrek met die probleem vanuit die liturgie dat daar binne die
huidige konteks en die deurlopende poging tot getrouheid aan die Skrif toenemend
spanning groei in die eredienspraktyk. Die proefskrif vertrek ook vanuit die
perspektief dat die liturgie die hartklop en voedingsaar van die gemeente is van
waaruit en waarheen die totale gemeente netwerk en dat die
verkondigingsbenadering en die vierings-benadering altwee 'n legitieme plek in die
Protestantse liturgiese tradisie het. As teoretiese vertrekpunt vir die liturgiese
handelinge word dialogiese kommunikasie gekies saam met kommunikatiewe
handelinge ter wille van die evangelie van Jesus Christus. In die eerste en laaste
hoofstukke word verduidelik wat met die begrip liturgie bedoel word.
Die probleem word gestel dat die liturgie 'n komplekse handeling en kardinale
fenomeen is wat reg moet laat geskied aan die Gereformeerde teologie en aan 'n
postmoderne konteks. Verder word uitgewys dat liturgiese spiritualiteit, liturgiese
kommunikasie en liturgiese pastoraat in ons huidige tydgleuf meer benut en uitgebou
kan word tydens die weeklikse liturgiee. Ten einde die liturgie in haar
Gereformeerde tradisie en postmoderne konteks te dien en om die drie liturgiese
fasette van spiritualiteit, kommunikasie en pastoraat te bevorder, word liturgiese
simbole en rituele aangebied as tydlose en tydige agente om die liturgie mee te
verryk. Om die ondersoeke af te rond, is daar ook aan simboliek in die Bybel
aandag gegee.
'n Werkswyse is gevolg waar die Gereformeerde teologie en postmoderniteit
ontleed is en in verband gebring is met simbole en rituele. Liturgiese spiritualiteit,
liturgiese kommunikasie en liturgiese pastoraat is ook gedissekteer, ten einde dit
beter te begryp, en in verband te bring met liturgiese simbole en rituele. Daarna het
simboliek aan die beurt gekom en is simbole en rituele gedefinieer, ontleed en na
aard, wese en toepassing bestudeer. Simboliek in die Bybel is afgetas om gewig te
verleen aan die ondersoeke. Uit al die genoemde ontledings en bevindings wys die
proefskrif uit dat simbole en rituele inderdaad uitnemend geskik is om die liturgie eer aan te doen in die eiesoortige soeke na voortreflike vlakke van spiritualiteit,
kommunikasie en pastoraat binne Gereformeerde en postmoderne kontekste.
Hieruit is 'n toepassingsmodel as omvattende praktykteorie aangebied vir die
liturgiese gebruik van simbole en rituele as die bydrae van hierdie proefskrif. (5.4 en
5.5).
Die kern van die model of praktykteorie vir die liturgiese toepassing van simboliek
is:
I. Dat die hoogste doelstelling en swaarwigtigste vergestalting met simboliek in
die erediens altyd God Drie-Enig en Bybelse waardes en beginsels is.
II. Dat aanvullende gebruikmaking en verrekening van regterbreinkomponente
soos ervaring, emosie en musiek noodsaaklik is.
Ill. 'n Doelbewuste hoe premie op handelende deelname en herhaling.
IV. 'n Benadering van eenvoud en soberheid.
V. Handelinge en momente wat spreek tot die kultuur en konteks van die dag.
VI. Erediensmomente wat die totale mens betrek en infokus op veelsintuiglikheid
en liggaamlikheid.
VII. Ruimte vir transendensie, verbeelding en mistiek om God te aanbid.

In this investigation key elements of the mysticism of Elizabeth of the Trinity (1880-1906) are compared and contrasted with the mysticism of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and as a result, the true nature of the relationship between their respective mysticism is elucidated. Key doctrines which exhibit a remarkable consonance are: the trinitarian foundation of their mysticism, the indwelling of the Trinity in the human soul, asceticism, desert spirituality, sacrificial love, liturgical spirituality, scriptural spirituality, deification and the doxological nature of their mysticism. Elements of divergence exist within the following: election and predestination, apophatic versus cataphatic mysticism, the Roman Catholic dogma of the immaculate conception of the virgin Mary, and the mode of God's presence in the human soul. Three unknown Carthusian liturgical manuscripts with music of the 14th to the 16th centuries in the Grey Collection, South African Library, Cape TownSteyn, Frances Caroline 11 1900 (has links)
Of the three manuscripts that form the basis of this thesis, MS Cape Town, South African
Library, Grey 4c7 is, in musicological terms the most important of the three manuscripts. It
is a complete Carthusian Antiphonary, of the late 14th century, written for the Charterhouse
of Champmol, near Dijon, the mausoleum of the Dukes of Burgundy. It also contains an
extensive Tonary, a Hymnary and a Kyriale. The two didactic verses which form part of the
Tonary are of particular importance, since MS 4c7is one of the few manuscripts in the world
intended for musical performance to contain the Ter terni by William of Hirsau; furthermore
it is apparently the only Carthusian manuscript of any kind to contain the Oyapente et
dyatessaron by Hucbald. The manuscript is placed in the context of the Carthusian liturgy
of the 12th to the 16th centuries and is compared with 33 manuscripts of this period. It is
shown that, although a marked textual similarity exists between the manuscripts, there are
variant melodies. The conclusion is therefore drawn that the Carthusians did not have a
single exemplar for the melodies in their liturgical books. It is shown that MS 4c7 and MS
Oijon, Bibliotheque municipale 118, also written for Champmol, were copied from the same
exemplar and that they are closely related to MSS Beaune, Bibliotheque municipale 27, 34
and 41, ot the neighbouring Charterhouse of Fontenay.
The second manuscript, MS Grey 3c23, an Antiphonary for nuns, for Lauds and Vespers,
written for the Charterhouse of Mont-Sainte-Marie, at Gosnay, near Arras, has been dated
1538 by the original scribe. This manuscript is almost identical to MS AGC C II 817. The
presence of a Sequence, foreign to the Carthusian tradition, is however unique toMS 3c23.
The third manuscript, MS Grey 6b3, is an Evangeliary, signed by the scribe, Amelontius de
Ercklems, in 1520. Its provenance is the Charterhouse of Our Lady of the Twelve Apostles
at Mont-Cornillon near Liege. Musicological features of the manuscript which are discussed

Gesange is geYnisieer nadat vasgestel is dat sodanige studie
nog nie voorheen in Suid-Af rika in Geref ormeerde kringe
onderneem is nie. Aangesien die geskiedenis en die
f undering van die kerklied deur ander navorsers reeds
volledig uitgewerk is, is hoofstuk 1 bloot 'n inleidende
oorsig wat die agtergrond van die studie verskaf. In
hoofstuk 2 is 'n kategorisering van die Gesange in extenso
gedoen en in hoofstuk 3 is die inhoud van die kategoriee
kortliks beskryf. Die doel hiermee is om vas te stel oor
watter onderwerpe die meeste gesing word en waar die lakunes
voorkom. Aan die hand van hierdie kategorisering is daar
uiteindelik vyf onderwerpe afgebaken wat ooglopend Bybelsteologiese
leemtes of selfs afwykings vertoon wat in die
toekoms aangespreek behoort te word. Die onderwerpe is
onderskeidelik: die Godsbeskouing, die skepping, die sonde,
die doop en die toekomsverwagting. In hoof stuk 4 het
hierdie onderwerpe af sonderlik ender die soeklig gekom.
Daar is o.a. gevind dat die inhoud van die Gesange 'n
duidelike reflektering is van die tradisionele kerkleer en
dus nie volkome daartoe in staat is om die moderne mens (die
jeug veral!) aan te spreek nie. Die gevolgtrekking waartoe
die navorser geraak het, is dat liedere wat die eietyds
geloofsproblematiek aanspreek 'n sine qua non geword het.
Die navorsing oor die inhoud van die Gesange het voorts ook
vreemde teologiese aksente uitgewys. So bv. is daar 'n
duidelike invloed van die Grieks platonistiese dualisme te
bespeur waar die Jenseitige teenoor die Diesseitige
af gespeel word. Di t het veral aan die lig gekom met die
bespreking oor die skepping. Eodem modo is daar spore van
die Pietistiese individualisme in die Gesange aangetref waar
die vertikale belewing met God (bekering, heiliging) die

krities-waarderende opmerkings saamgevat. / Research into the theological content of the Evangelical
Hymns was initiated after it was established that such a
study had not been attempted in South Africa in Reformed
circles. Since the history and grounding of the church hymn
have already been discussed in full by other researchers,
chapter 1 merely offers an introductory review which
provides some background to the study. In chapter 2 a
categorisation of the Hymns was done in extenso and chapter
3, in turn, deals with the contents of each specific
category. The aim is to determine which subjects are
prevalent in Hymns and which ones are not addressed at all.
On the basis of this categorisation, five subjects were
finally defined which revealed obvious biblical-theological
lacunae, if not deviations, all of which need to be
addressed in the future. The subjects are: the ways of
thinking about God, the creation, sin, baptism and hopes for
the future. In chapter 4 these subjects were examined in
detail. It was proved, inter alia, that the contents of the
Hymns clearly reflect the traditional church doctrine and
consequently fail to a large extent to address modern man
(especially the young people of our time). The conclusion
reached by the researcher is that Hymns addressing the
contemporary problematic nature of faith have become a sine
qua non. Furthermore, research on the contents of the Hymns
also revealed foreign theological accents such as clear
influences of the Greek Platonistic dualism where the
Jenseitige is compared to the Diesseitige. This became
particularly evident in the discussion on the creation.
Eodem modo traces of the Pietistic indiviudalism were
detected in the Hymns, where the vertical experience of God
(conversion, sanctification) completely overshadows the
horizontal experience of religion (social responsibility,
mission work, nature conservation)! Chapter 5 comprises
these recommendations in the form of remarks of a criticalappreciation
nature. / Eine Untersuchung in Bezug auf den theologischen Inhalt der
Evangelischen Kirchenlieder wurde in die Wege geleitet
nachdem festgestellt wurde, daB ein solches Studium noch nie
vorhin in Ref ormierten Kreisen in Slidaf rika vorgenommen
worden war. Da die Geschichte und die Fundierung des
Kirchenliedes von andern Forschern schon in all en
Einzelheiten ausgearbeitet worden sind, bietet Kapitel 1
bloB eine einleitende Ubersicht als Hintergrund flir das
Studium. In Kapitel 2 wurden die Kirchenlieder in extenso
nach Kategorien geordnet und in Kapitel 3 findet sich der
Inhalt jeder einzelnen Kategorie vor. Es sollte
festgestellt werden, welche Themen sich am meisten in den
Kirchenliedern erkennen lassen und welche liberhaupt nicht
berlihrt werden. An Hand dieser Anordnung in Kategorien
wurden zum Schluss flinf Themen definiert, die augenfiillig
biblisch-theologische Lucken, wenn nicht sogar Abweichungen,
offenbaren; es sind Themen, denen in der Zukunft zweifellos
einem gerechten Platz
Gottesauffassung, die
zukommen sollen. Die themen sind:
Schopfung, Siinde, die Taufe und
Zukunftserwartungen. In Kapitel 4 wurden diese Themen in
allen Einzelheiten untersucht. Es stellte sich unter
anderern heraus, das der Inhalt der Kirchenlieder eine klare
Widerspiegelung der traditionellen Kirchenlehre ist und
deshalb den Ansprilchen des modernen Menschen (vor allern der
Jugend) nicht vollig gerecht werden konnen. Die
schluflfolgerung des Forschers ist deshalb, das Lieder,
welche den zeitgenossischen Glaubensproblernatik berilhren,
eine sine qua non geworden sind. Die Forschung in Bezug auf
den Inhalt der Kirchenlieder offenbarte weiterhin auch
fremde theologische Akzente. Es laflt sich zurn Beispiel
einen deutlichen Einfluss des griechisch-platonistischen
Dualismus aufweisen wo das Jenseitige dern Diesseitigen
gegenilbergestellt wird. Es wurde besonders deutlich in der
Diskussion Uber die Schopfung. Eodem modo offenbarte sich
Spuren eines pietistischen Individualismus in den Liedern wo
das vertikale Gotteserlebnis (Bekehrung, Heiligung) das
horizontale Erlebnis der Religion (soziale Verantwortung,
Missionsarbeit, Naturbewahrung) vollig in den Schatten

The development of Dunfermline Abbey as a royal cult centre, c.1070-c.1420Lee, SangDong January 2014 (has links)
This thesis examines the development the cult of St Margaret at Dunfermline as a royal cult from 1070, the moment when St Margaret married King Malcolm III at Dunfermline, to 1420, the year of the burial of Robert duke of Albany who was the last royal member to be buried at Dunfermline. Scholars have focused on the life of St Margaret and her reputation or achievement from the biographical, institutional and hagiographical point of view. Although recent historians have considered St Margaret as a royal saint and Dunfermline as a royal mausoleum, they have approached this subject with relatively simple patterns, compared to the studies of the cults of European royal saints and their centres, in particular, those of English and French Kingdoms which influenced Scottish royalty. Just as other European royal cults such as the cults at Westminster and St-Denis have been researched from the point of view of several aspects, so the royal cult at Dunfermline can be approached in many ways. Therefore, this thesis will examine the development of Dunfermline Abbey as a royal cult centre through studying the abbey and the cult of St Margaret from the point of view of miracles and pilgrimage, lay patronage, and liturgical and devotional space. The examination of St Margaret’s miracles stories and pilgrimage to Dunfermline contribute to understanding these stories in the context of the development of the cult. The study of lay patronage explains the significance of royal favour and non-royal patrons in relation to the development of the cult, and how and why the royal cult developed and declined, and how the monks of Dunfermline promoted or sustained the cult of the saint. Lastly, the research of the liturgical and devotional space provides an explanation of the change of liturgical space from the point of view of the development of the cult.

La liturgie a longtemps été considérée comme un marqueur identitaire fort des Églises luthériennes et réformées, qui avaient pour tradition de produire leur propre liturgie dont l’usage, normatif, ne variait pas. Les mutations socio-religieuses des dernières décennies, couplées avec les unions d’Églises en cours, ont révélé la grande diversité de liturgies mises en œuvre dans les paroisses d’une même Église. Cette diversité interroge particulièrement trois aspects ecclésiologiques : la vie liturgique, dans ses fondements et ses pratiques, la dynamique communautaire et notamment la place faite à la liturgie dans son déploiement et enfin l’identité ecclésiale, afin de savoir dans quelle mesure la liturgie traduit ou participe d’une identité. Le travail de recherche mené dans le cadre de ce doctorat part de ces trois volets pour dégager des critères liturgiques initiaux et transversaux pour les confronter aux données de terrain afin de mesurer l’écart entre ce qui est important dans la perspective théologique des Églises de la Réforme, ce qui est mis en œuvre dans les paroisses et ce qui est perçu par les paroissiens. / Liturgy has long been considered as a strong feature of the identity of Lutheran and Reformed Churches. It was their tradition to produce their own liturgy with a standardised and unvarying usage. Over the last few decades, social and religious changes, coupled with on-going unions between Churches have demonstrated the wide diversity of Liturgies used in the parishes of any one Church. In this diversity three ecclesiological aspects come particularly to the fore: liturgical life, in its foundations and practices, community dynamics and especially the place give to liturgy within this and finally ecclesial identity, in order to find out how far liturgy is a an expression of or an active part of identity. The research work carried out as part of this doctorate uses these three subjects to establish initial and transverse liturgical criteria and then compares these with data gathered in the field in order to assess the gap between what is important from a theological point of view for the Churches of the Reform, what is practiced in parishes and what is perceived by parishioners.

The aim of the thesis is to investigate theological understandings in conjunction with the baptism of children and to develop such of these understandings as can be seen to be “trovärdiga” (credible or trustworthy) in the contemporary context of Church of Sweden. The theoretical point of departure is taken in a hermeneutical theological method of correlation between interpretation of “Situation” and interpretation of “Tradition”. A trustworthy theology emerges in a critical and/or constructive encounter between the interpretation of Tradition and the interpretation of Situation. Such an encounter can be established within an area of problematics. Three problem areas are identified that are present in the Swedish context of baptizing children in Church of Sweden. A) The first problem area concerns the theological interpretation of the relationship between those baptized and those not in a pluralistic society. B) Theological interpretation of “destruction” and what the theological tradition names original sin. How can a trustworthy baptismal theology be developed that takes suffering, oppression, the ecological crisis, seriously in the present situation and at the same time handle or solve the problems related to the theological tradition of original sin? C) How can a trustworthy baptismal theology solve or handle the problems related to a dichotomous construct of the relationship between God and the world? Four types of material are analyzed: sociological and statistical material, ecumenical theological resources for interpreting baptism, two different orders of baptism at use in Church of Sweden and baptismal liturgies celebrated according to these orders of baptism, and primarily Oriental Orthodox traditions of the Baptism of Jesus. While the study of complete sources is very valuable, and has contributed greatly to what is understood of music history, the perspective they contribute is limited because they cannot reveal information about how music and music sources were most often used. The study of functional sources, more probably created for use, allows for more insight into how music was performed and understood, and how such sources were created, used and valued.
This study examines twelve fragmentary early sixteenth-century English sources from the Digital Image Archive of Medieval Music (DIAMM) database, constituting a sample of functional music sources in this period. The study of this sampling reveals information about how functional manuscripts were created, used and valued in England during this time period. Some of the fragments contain works with concordances. These concordances are compared using variant comparison, where differences in the versions of the work are considered and weighed. The comparative study of concordances provides insight into the transmission of the versions, scribal and performance culture, as well as into music culture in general. Overall, the study of this sampling of early sixteenth-century functional English sources provides a clearer understanding of the use of accidentals, scribes and scribal culture, performers, performance practice and music culture in England at this time, contributing to the understanding of music history.
