Breaching the perimeter: Designing for more economically feasible, durable, and sustainable construction within the United States military

January 2018 (has links)
As Americans witness the slow dissociation of the military from the civilian public, the need for a strong design initiative within military installations proves as applicable and necessary as it has always been. The role of the designer within the military is a longstanding and vigorously debated duty; the superficially disparate natures of the professions separate themselves on the premise of individual superiority, and isolate their fields of expertise from one another. However, the two microcosms retain an identity that may serve traditionally different clientele, but their purposes reflect and complement one another. This notion is best exemplified by the pedagogy often associated with architecture and the military: a community working tirelessly to construct a system best adapted to the public, regularly working with a client who does not have a clear vision of the resolution, but instead relies on the services of both occupations to not only visualize the outcome but to design the process as well. The all contingency of accredited designers within a typical military hierarchy have been tasked with creating a conducive living environment centralized around "the mission". While they have toiled endlessly to produce such a product, the unfortunate reality demonstrates that the weight of schematics has been typically relegated to grandsons of civil engineers and civilians with unrelated degrees and very little experience in a headquarter building hundreds of miles away. Bearing this in mind, the purpose of this thesis is to discover the greater organization of a military base, and to standardize it not according to chance doctrine, but soundly informed and localized knowledge of the surrounding environment. Such a design must be informed by a few key aspects; principally, the macro intention of such a layout must be centralized around "the mission", which in the case of most military bases, resembles a training and living environment conducive to deployment and combat effectiveness. Similarly, the determination of design must be within the scope of economic feasibility, which although quite gratuitous at first glance, is meagerly distributed throughout the separate branches and therein the country. Lastly, the design must have tenacity, as the ebb and flow of active duty populations produce an arbitrary fluctuation, but the life expectancy of such buildings is often projected within the fifty- to sixty-year time frame. Through careful research, and the benefit of personal interviews with clients who have spent collective centuries in the modern military, a design solution for the improved daily lives and increased combat effectiveness of the American military will serve to discuss the ways in which we can inform the macroevolution of military installations through dissecting the micro. / 0 / SPK / specialcollections@tulane.edu

Analysis of Demographic Influences on Drug and Alcohol Use In Individuals That Screen Positive For Suicide Risk in the Emergency Department

Orr, Victoria L 01 January 2022 (has links)
Suicide is a growing public health problem, and the 12th leading cause of death overall in the United States. Past research has been conducted on individuals who screen positive for suicide to determine risk factors and suicide patterns across age groups. However, limited little research has been conducted on individuals that screen positive for suicide risk in an emergency department setting. Through the use of a longitudinal, secondary dataset from the Florida Implementation of the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention Project, the relationship between alcohol and drug use and generation (Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials), age, and living status was analyzed in adults (25+) who screened positive for suicide risk in the emergency department. Omnibus chi-square statistics and adjusted standardized residual analyses were used to assess differences in alcohol and drug use amongst generations, age groups, and living statuses. Results indicated significant differences between alcohol, opioid, and amphetamine use and frequency among individuals living with family and in unsheltered environments and marijuana use in Generation X and Millennials. Limitations include sample size and self-reported measures of frequency and usage of drugs and alcohol, which warrant future studies to expand upon these findings.

You are a part of Sweden but you are not Swedish" : A qualitative study about migrants from the Balkans and their reflections on their life situations

Piscoran, Andrea-Mariana, Lock, Sara-Lina January 2018 (has links)
Migration has increased through globalization in the world and to Sweden as well. When an individual leaves its native country for a new country it often means social, cultural and economical changes. The purpose of this study is to highlight how migrants from countries around the Balkans are experiencing their new life in the Swedish society, and from their perspectives notice the challenges they face in their everyday lives. The survey is conducted through six interviews with three men and three women from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia. The study starts with a brief historical presentation of the geographical area. The result shows that the migration has made it possible for the respondents to improve their economic conditions, but at the same time emphasizes that the loss of social connection to others have had a great effect on their lives. Further on, the results are discussed based on modernization and postmodernization theories according to Robert Inglehart as well as from individualization theory from Ulrich Beck's perspective. It is also related to previous research in the field where similarities and differences are visualized.

Ausgewählte Aspekte von Lebenssituation und medizinischer Versorgung Multiple Sklerose Betroffener in Deutschland

Poschwatta, Barbara 18 April 2005 (has links)
In a representative study 1219 people with multiple sclerosis in Germany were asked about the impacts of multiple sclerosis on their living situation and their estimation of the medical supply. Main topics were: social impacts, perception of the disease, coping with everyday life, quality of life, patient information, doctor-patient-relationship, shared decision making and the ACT programme as tool in the medical supply. Negative impacts on all analysed areas of the living situation could be proved, but the estimation differs in dependence on the specific living situation and the personality. Unlike the physical disability isn''t a predictor of the individual estimation of the impact. People with multiple sclerosis get their main support by relatives and friends. Professional services are rarely used in relation to the aid by the individual social environment. People with multiple sclerosis have very high expectations on the medical supply. The estimation of the situation is relatively negative if the people are more critical as well as if they have a great need for autonomy. The interrogated people with multiple sclerosis use basically and for their therapy decision mostly objective, medical information. Most of them use subjective knowledge based on experiences only additionally. Medical supply should be optimised by better integrating people with multiple sclerosis who are more critical or self confident as well as better informed. Usability and access of the existing offers to inform, support and counsel people with multiple sclerosis have to be improved.

Intermezzo - Centrum pro rodiče a děti / Intermezzo - Center for Parents and Children

Halbrštátová, Lada January 2016 (has links)
Abstract The main purpose of creating this object was to create a place where people having bad living situation will meet people who live regular lives. This is the reason why two floors were projected. The first floor is designed for social activities whereas the second floor is a housing part with apartments. The advantage of irregular but compact shape of the building is perfect connection between its functional parts. The object does not have any basement and it is placed in a little slopy bulit-up surroundings on the crossing of Tyršova and U Distance streets in Letohrad town. On the first floor there is a main entrance, a coffee, massages, a recreation hall, an art working-room, a gym, changing rooms, administration and the technological background of the object. The second floor does not cover a whole area of the first floor. Apartments, laundry room and drying room are situated here. One of the apartments here is projected as barrier-free as well as whole first floor. Both floors are connected by central staircase with shape of „U“ and an elevator. Roofing of the object is realized by single layered flat roof with classic layer order. The gym is roofed by a flat roof held by glued laminated girders. The construction was projected with regard to synergy of all used materials and systems. The chosen solution of object with two floors (both above the terrain) makes the building pretty marked when looking at it’s location, however it makes the place more integrated and uniform.

Studenters upplevelse av aktivitetsbalans i relation till upplevd hälsa efter covid-19 pandemin / Students’ experience of occupational balance in relation to perceived health after the covid-19 pandemic.

Nilsson, Matilda, Emelie, Olsson January 2023 (has links)
Abstract  Introduction: The covid-19 pandemic affected people’s occupational patterns, habits, and lifestyles, including students who had to study existing campus-based studies online. Restrictions meant that students visited fewer places and spent less time on social and physical activity. More time was spent on sedentary activities, media consumption and rest. Studies have shown that students experienced a reduced quality of life, increased stress levels and poorer mental health during the pandemic.  Aim: The aim of the study was to describe students’ experience of occupational balance in relation to perceived health after the covid-19 pandemic. Method: A quantitative and a non-parametric method was used. 38 participants were included. The questionnaire consisted of the Occupational Balance Questionnaire and The Salutogenic Health Indicator Scale, as well as self-constructed questions.  Results: Students experienced relatively good health, but the occupational balance was possibly lower. Positive associations with higher levels of occupational balance and salutogenic health were found in support from classmates, campus-based studies and living together. Conclusions: Students' occupational balance and health was possibly affected after the pandemic. The study found relationships between occupational balance and health in relation to education form, living situation and their sense of support from classmates.
