Disease and the city

Hartmann, Gunnar 21 October 2015 (has links)
While disease describes a body’s pathological state, space of disease is the spatio-temporal condition that allows disease to come into existence. Conceptually speaking, a space of disease both preconditions a disease and holds it in place for a certain time. Historically, disease has flourished in urban environments that rely on large concentrations of bodies and a vast amount of material flows; that is, various urban conditions can be held responsible for the outbreak of epidemics. No matter on what scale we enter these particular spaces of disease (on the scale of a cross-continental trade route, a city, or a building), physical space represents only a potential risk factor, requiring the flow of physical, chemical, and biological components through it to precondition that space for disease. Hence, each disease should be viewed as a spatial flow, which can be described architecturally and operatively. In this arena of disease and the city, the spatial measures that have evolved in response to disease have by necessity pushed space to its limits—space confines, treats, accesses, and cultivates disease, and is itself subject to medication. In the context of this research, the hospital serves as the primary representative of the architecture of the city. While the hospital of the Charité in Berlin is the subject of this case study (and its three-hundred-year history defines the time frame of this research), the attempt here is to expand upon the history of the hospital of clinical medicine by framing various spaces of disease and their impact upon the city; by positioning the hospital within the context of the diverse spatial measures that the city historically has implemented against disease; and by analyzing the hospital’s move toward greater clinical specialization.

Ausgewählte Aspekte von Lebenssituation und medizinischer Versorgung Multiple Sklerose Betroffener in Deutschland

Poschwatta, Barbara 18 April 2005 (has links)
In a representative study 1219 people with multiple sclerosis in Germany were asked about the impacts of multiple sclerosis on their living situation and their estimation of the medical supply. Main topics were: social impacts, perception of the disease, coping with everyday life, quality of life, patient information, doctor-patient-relationship, shared decision making and the ACT programme as tool in the medical supply. Negative impacts on all analysed areas of the living situation could be proved, but the estimation differs in dependence on the specific living situation and the personality. Unlike the physical disability isn''t a predictor of the individual estimation of the impact. People with multiple sclerosis get their main support by relatives and friends. Professional services are rarely used in relation to the aid by the individual social environment. People with multiple sclerosis have very high expectations on the medical supply. The estimation of the situation is relatively negative if the people are more critical as well as if they have a great need for autonomy. The interrogated people with multiple sclerosis use basically and for their therapy decision mostly objective, medical information. Most of them use subjective knowledge based on experiences only additionally. Medical supply should be optimised by better integrating people with multiple sclerosis who are more critical or self confident as well as better informed. Usability and access of the existing offers to inform, support and counsel people with multiple sclerosis have to be improved.

Invisible

Hanass-Hancock, Jill 29 September 2008 (has links)
The study focuses on the interweaving patterns of stigmatisation between disability and HIV/AIDS in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The study was designed to understand the cultural roots of non-medical representations of disability and HIV/AIDS. The results show strong evidence that the way in which people are prone to think about and respond to disability and HIV/AIDS exposes people with disability to a particularly high risk of infection while simultaneously decreasing access to treatment and care. While unfolding hidden meanings and notions about disability and HIV/AIDS, the study analyses both phenomena on a macrocultural, microcultural and individual level. The study concludes with key messages emerging from the empirical research as well as from historical and policy analysis. Through this, it attempts to provide some guidance for transformation.
