Unsmiling Lips and Dull Eyes: A Study of Why We Continue to Read Jane Austen

Barakat, Kareen 07 November 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to take a closer look at Jane Austen’s work and understand the importance of it in both the academic and cultural sphere. With a specific focus on Pride and Prejudice, this research starts with a focus on feminist readings of the novel. Primarily, this research looks at the novel with a feminist lens in order to better understand the female characters and their involvement in the marriage plot. Secondarily, the research goes on to look at the cultural impact of Pride and Prejudice and attempts to understand the ways in which this novel re-appears in different adaptations. Finally, the research suggests that there should be a new way of reading Austen that better fits contemporary society. Despite how far removed Jane Austen’s world may seem, her work remains important and worth studying. This thesis argues in favor of the appreciation of Jane Austen’s work both academically and culturally.

Fibonacci Vectors

Salter, Ena 20 July 2005 (has links)
By the n-th Fibonacci (respectively Lucas) vector of length m, we mean the vector whose components are the n-th through (n+m-1)-st Fibonacci (respectively Lucas) numbers. For arbitrary m, we express the dot product of any two Fibonacci vectors, any two Lucas vectors, and any Fibonacci vector and any Lucas vector in terms of the Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. We use these formulas to deduce a number of identities involving the Fibonacci and Lucas numbers.

Safety with Mechanical Chest Compressions in CPR : Clinical studies with the LUCAS™ device

Smekal, David January 2013 (has links)
Chest compressions in cardiopulmonary resuscitation are of utmost importance although not without a risk. Many injuries are described but the incidence of these is hard to define due to methodological differences. It is strenuous to perform chest compressions and therefore mechanical chest compressions have been looked upon with interest. This thesis presents new insights on the panorama and incidence of injuries in modern CPR and a comparison of safety and efficacy between manual chest compressions and mechanical chest compressions with the LUCAS™ device. We also evaluated if computed tomography could be an aid in the detection of these injuries. Two pilot trials were conducted and one presented no difference in early survival with 26% and 31% having return of spontaneous circulation when comparing manual chest compressions with the LUCAS device in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. The other revealed no difference in autopsy-detected injuries. A third multicentre autopsy trial revealed that in patients treated with manual chest compressions 78.3% had at least one injury and 63.9% had at least one rib fracture. The corresponding numbers for patients treated with the LUCAS device was 92.8% (p = 0.002) and 77.7% (p=0.022). Sternal fractures occurred in 54.2% and in 58.3% of the cases treated with manual chest compressions and the LUCAS device respectively (p = 0.556). The median number of rib fractures was 7 in the group receiving manual chest compressions and 6 in the group receiving chest compressions with the LUCAS device. In 31 cases a computed tomography was conducted prior to autopsy and we found a very strong correlation in the discrimination of patients with or without rib fractures (kappa=0.83). Mean difference between the two methods in detecting rib fractures was 0.16. The detection of other injuries did not have a strong correlation. In conclusion there is no difference in early survival between the two methods and mechanical chest compressions adds 14-15% more patients with rib fractures but the amount of rib fractures, sternal fractures and other injuries is equal. CT can aid but not replace autopsies in the detection of these injuries.

GAZE ESTIMATION USING SCLERA AND IRIS EXTRACTION

Periketi, Prashanth Rao 01 January 2011 (has links)
Tracking gaze of an individual provides important information in understanding the behavior of that person. Gaze tracking has been widely used in a variety of applications from tracking consumers gaze fixation on advertisements, controlling human-computer devices, to understanding behaviors of patients with various types of visual and/or neurological disorders such as autism. Gaze pattern can be identified using different methods but most of them require the use of specialized equipments which can be prohibitively expensive for some applications. In this dissertation, we investigate the possibility of using sclera and iris regions captured in a webcam sequence to estimate gaze pattern. The sclera and iris regions in the video frame are first extracted by using an adaptive thresholding technique. The gaze pattern is then determined based on areas of different sclera and iris regions and distances between tracked points along the irises. The technique is novel as sclera regions are often ignored in eye tracking literature while we have demonstrated that they can be easily extracted from images captured by low-cost camera and are useful in determining the gaze pattern. The accuracy and computational efficiency of the proposed technique is demonstrated by experiments with human subjects.

[en] THE OTHER THAT JUSTIFIES ME: EXEGETICAL ANALYSIS OF LUKE 18: 9-14 / [pt] O OUTRO QUE ME JUSTIFICA: ANÁLISE EXEGÉTICA DE LC 18, 9-14

LEONARDO LOPES DE SOUZA 29 November 2016 (has links)
[en] This work, which has the title The Other justifying me, this is an exegetical analysis / hermeneutics on the pericope Lucana 18, 9-14, the parable of the Pharisee and the Publican. The methodology is the implementation of the steps of the Critical History Method, also bringing some considerations to the overall reality of theology and some related sciences, such as philosophy and psychology. The parable of Luke 18: 9-14, known as the Pharisee and the Publican, throughout history has been interpreted as a parable that deals on prayer, that is the proper way in which the student must refer to God. Another recurring line throughout history is that this was a parable about humility, as the superb attitude of the Pharisee contrasts with the humble figure of published that dares not even raise his eyes to heaven, and down home receiving the divine favors. This study continues to show the validity of these interpretations, at the same time shows that they are not enough to display the text meaning of wealth. This paper aims to explain the parable as an example already present in the synoptic of the doctrine of justification by faith, which will be further developed by the apostle Paul, and that includes most all the semantic meaning of this, and that also includes previous interpretations They were made from this.

Vícerovnicové ekonometrické modely národních ekonomik / Econometric models of national economies

Hála, Petr January 2018 (has links)
The present thesis deals with multiple econometric equations systems which might provide a useful insight into the national economy modelling. It takes into account possible pitfalls of common practices. It introduces the theory and estimation methods of multiple econometric equations systems. It also discusses the equality of savings and investment and the theory of money. Furthermore, it briefly analyses Klein's model I from a theoretical point of view and uses the three-step least squares method in order to estimate it. Partial modifications of this model are suggested and implemented. The quality of the competitive models is evaluated employing the predictive criterion. Consequently, the canonical NK DSGE model is derived and subjected to theoretical criticism. The thesis debates doubts on the relevance of the NK IS curve and argues that Lucas's critique is still valid. A generalized method of moments is used to implement the NK DSGE model. Finally, this model is briefly compared with Klein's model I.
