Malungos do sertão : cotidiano, práticas mágicas e feitiçaria no Mato Grosso setecentista /

Sá Júnior, Mário Teixeira de. January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: The present work aims to develop a research related to the daily life of societies that lived in Mato Grosso (1719-1830) and the role of magical practices and witchcraft used by them. For doing so, we will analyze the societies that came to this region, such as the Europeans, the Africans and their Brazilian descendants, and the Indians that were living in this territory, such as the Paiaguá, the Guaicuru, the Caiapó and the Bororo. More than just an ethnographical analysis of these groups, we aim to develop an understanding of the possible uses of the magical practices and witchcraft in this daily life as a result of the dialogue between distinct cultural forms. This cultural dialogue aim to deal with metaphysical questions and to those related to material and immaterial aspects of human existence, which have arisen from the general characteristics of the studied period or even as a result of the specificity of the1700s Matogrossense society. For instance, firstly we will highlight daily life as a space that creates questions and after magical practices and witchcraft as the elements that can give solutions to these questions. / Doutor

Ser cubana e americana, diferentemente: assimilação e tradição nos romances de Cristina García / Being Cuban and American, differently : assimilation and tradition in the novels of Cristina García

Marina Job Vasques de Freitas Espirito Santo 30 March 2007 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the novels Dreaming in Cuban and The Agüero Sisters, by contemporary Cuban-American writer Cristina García, focusing on the female characters living in exile. I intend to examine the varied responses to the experience of dwelling-in-displacement exhibited by these characters and to explore the transformations in their diasporic identities, including processes of assimilation, attitudes towards cultural legacy, and the ongoing negotiation between cultures that leads to hybridity. I also intend to show that Santería and magical realism are the elements used by Cristina García to underscore the connections between the characters and their prior home

Schumacher, Christian 09 April 2018 (has links) (PDF)
Natural Kinds, Causal Laws, Magical Concepts: an Approach to American Magical Realism”. Throughout Latin American history of ideas one can find an alienated relation towards nature, which appears as magical, indecipherable and hostile. The two main characteristics of this idea of nature are the abundance of strange species and the unpredictability of events. In this essay I will argue that the first characteristic is a natural effect of the process of inductive learning under the conditions of the discovery and conquest of America, and that the second characteristic is in turn an effect of the way how the empirical expectations with these strange species were cast in causal laws.

Hibridismo e simultaneidade no romance \'The famished road\', de Ben Okri / Hybridity and simultaneous in the novel \'The famished road\', by Ben Okri

Divanize Carbonieri 15 May 2006 (has links)
In the novel The Famished Road (1991) Nigerian author Ben Okri gives a new dimension to the spirit child or abiku\'s image, which is a recurrent motif among the Yoruba and many other cultures from West Africa. The abiku is a characteristic subject of the African oral narrative and is also present in some African literature in English as the abiku is part of the belief of those cultures. However, Okri undertakes an innovation, turning the abiku into the narrator of his novel. Since this creature is an in between, living permanently in the intersection between the world of the living and the world of the dead, the structure of the literary work is altered by the reality as it is seen through his eyes. His vision is made up by the simultaneous images of those two worlds. In the construction of his novel, Okri tries to translate this vision to a Western reading audience, using paradigms from both the African orality and Western literature. Thus, the novel is placed in a transitional space between African and Western cultures. Narrative methods and strategies from both traditions are used and the abiku phenomenon itself is invested by other more Western conceptions about the soul\'s resurrection. This dissertation aims to reveal from a postcolonial theoretical perspective how this novel is constructed as a hybrid work between the modes of perceiving and depicting reality characteristic of each one of these cultures.

The material of study were composed by five narrative episodes, with six people, dwellers or former residents of the community, in a qualitative study of mixed character, which involved studies in office/laboratory and field. We assumed that the permeated linguistic events of popular religion, especially catholicism, would present a magical-religious dimension whose the elements external to language and resulting from agreements concluded by speaking community over time, could give, or not, the pragmatic meaning of the words or language constructions, with their power according to the context in which they perform. The recordings, transcripts, inventory and analysis of data, in lexicultural perspective (PESSOA, 2005; PINTO CORREIA, 2013; DURANTI, 2000 among others), revealed that the extra-linguistic universe of the subjects under study - the circumstances, the social conventions and the historical and cultural facts - that circumscribe the religious texts in their daily lives, participates in the construction of the meanings attributed to linguistic signs of field of the worldview of popular catholicism. Finally, the study corroborated the thesis that language is intrinsically related to the culture of a people, especially in its lexical configuration, where the cultural traits of a people are better evidenced (BIDERMAN, 1998; SOUZA, 2014). In this context, the words, as a key element of the practices analyzed in this study, is considered as a element of wisdom of human that, understood as action and medium of communication, acquires the power to act in the world, taking a magic-religious dimension.

Voces magicae: o poder das palavras nos Papiros Gregos Mágicos / Voces Magicae: the power of words in the Greek Magical Papyri

Patrícia Schlithler da Fonseca Cardoso 11 August 2016 (has links)
The Greek Magical Papyri are a collection of magical texts from Graeco-Roman Egypt. Its contents display a mixture of different traditions, mainly Egyptian and Greek. A noticeable feature in these texts is the so-called voces magicae, mysterious looking words with no apparent lexical meaning. This dissertation focuses on analyzing the voces magicae in their textual context in order to better comprehend how this feature appears on incantations. A database was established with vox magica taken from the spells. The voces magicae were analyzed according to the words next to them. The different contexts in which voces magicae were found were discussed with examples from our corpus. Based on this analysis, it was possible to raise a few hypotheses on the nature of magical words and what kind of function they have on spells.

La comédie de magie espagnole (1840-1930) : Le spectaculaire flamboyant / Spanish Magical Theatre (1840-1930) : The Blazing Spectacular

Jankovic, Lisa 22 November 2014 (has links)
La pata de cabra (1829) by Grimaldi was a turning point in the history of Spanish Magical Theater. My dissertation is enquiry into 19th and 20th-Century Post- Grimaldian enchanting comedies. I use a cultural historical approach to shed light on this genre’s specific search for a “spectacular dimension” and to examine it from an aesthetic and artistic point of view, as well as a technical and budgetary one. This Magical Theatre was very prolific and successful at the time (despite harsh critics), but it has largely been forgotten since. Although Magical Comedy seems to be a minor genre, it is nonetheless part of a long “neo-ritualistic” Spanish and European tradition and, because of its extensive optimization of on-stage possibilities, it has undoubtedly influenced more renowned genres. I discuss the performance aspect of this cultural object and I argue that it is a workshop for Spanish Avant-Garde theatre. I show how Magical Comedy fostered theatrical creativity among artists and I discuss to which extent this singular cultural phenomenon shaped specific representative techniques (scenery, costumes, machinery and other devices) in Spanish theatre.

Paralely v poetice Juana Rulfa a Maríi Luisy Bombal / Parallelism in the Poetics of Juan Rulfo and María Luisa Bombal

Norocká, Monika January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this Diploma Thesis is to bring attention to the resemblance between the work of one of the most important Hispanic American authors of 20th century, the Mexican Juan Rulfo, and his less well-known Chilean colleague, María Luisa Bombal. Even though the work of these writers has often been associated with the beginnings of the so-called Magical Realism, so far literary critics have not studied the parallelism in their poetics in detail. This work observes the deviation of these authors from the type of literature dominant in their time, and their effort to renovate it. Furthermore, it concerns the similarity in the approach to death in their work; it pays attention to the influence of the Nordic literature on their literary production. Another part of this work is dedicated to the parallels between the character of Susana San Juan from Rulfoˈs Pedro Páramo and Bombalˈs female characters. In addition to that, the work reflects the personal relationship between the authors in question.

The Prism

Ellis, Darrah Melita 01 May 2023 (has links) (PDF)
"The Prism" is a magical-girl-themed fantasy light novel series about four best friends who finally graduated junior high school. Miya, Teresa, Liana, and Destiny are anxious to start their new high school lives (for better or worse) in their rough, monotone, and corrupt urban town of Quaint Village. Their plans are interrupted, however, by the opening of a brand new private school. Then, for the first time ever, all four girls end up in the same program. They're ready to make great memories together and spend much more time with each other. Unbeknownst to them, their new school is nothing like the academically inclined programs they always had. They are no longer students carrying books, homework, and planners, scribbling and speed reading. They become soldiers, traveling subconsciously to another world. Their duty is to help Vita Mundi's Vice Sovereign and her family protect their people from criminals and life-sentence-serving convicts called Umbrans. In only a month, this tight posse goes from being a quartet of normal students in Quaint Village, to lady soldiers fighting and risking themselves for a parallel world. They will train under the mentorship of the Vice Sovereign and her family, steadily growing stronger in body, mind, heart, and spirit as they face harder and more powerful enemies.
