Web-Enabled Customer Involvement in Innovation Activities : a Firm's Perspective

Customer involvement in innovation activities is a common practice among companies in most industries. It has been widely researched by scholars to demonstrate its risks and advantages. Yet, the growing importance and recognition of the Internet are transforming the scope, boundaries, and dynamics of interactions among firms and customers. Progressing information and communication technologies (ICTs) (including the Internet) enable faster, cheaper, and more efficient collaboration. The demonstrated benefits of using various web-based methods for customer involvement in innovation activities have encouraged companies to adopt a new approach. Despite this, there is a lack of knowledge about associated challenges. In addition, prior research was unable to provide empirical evidence of the claimed benefits ensuing from web-enabled customer involvement. As a result, companies may experience unforeseen difficulties and may not be able to achieve what they expect from their implementation of web-based methods. This thesis aims to address this research gap by exploring web-enabled customer involvement from a firm’s perspective. The overall purpose of this dissertation is to increase the understanding of web-enabled customer involvement in innovation activities by exploring its use and its impact on firms’ innovation, as well as management competences needed for its efficient realization. The thesis draws on the concept of absorptive capacity and includes four empirical studies from various industries. The adoption levels of a wide range of web-based methods were identified and compared with the findings of the previous study, thereby uncovering interesting changes in their popularity, as well as differences in adoption among companies in various industries. The empirical findings of this thesis show that web-based methods increase a company’s probability to introduce service innovations. Three types of challenges related to different types of web-based methods were identified and verified. It was also possible to identify corresponding management practices to handle these challenges. The management practices form three firm competences, constituting a specific absorptive capacity. It was proved that all dimensions of this specific absorptive capacity are needed for successful and effective customer involvement. Insights of this thesis contribute to increasing the understanding of web-enabled customer involvement. Therefore, the thesis provides companies with empirically verified knowledge that is necessary to make decisions about the implementation and management of web-enabled customer involvement.

Global Knowledge Management Competence and Competitive Advantage-The role of dynamic capabilities

This paper examines the mediating effects of dynamic capabilities on the relationship between global knowledge management competences and competitive advantage. The predictions of dynamic capabilities were tested using a sample of international enterprises in Taiwan. The results indicate that dynamic capabilities are the key to competitive advantage. The performance of an organization can be considered as the outcome of a complex isomorphism and reciprocal influences between its internal and external competences and dynamic capabilities related to environmental uncertainty and turbulence. Structural equation analysis is applied to empirically testify the relationships and the path model suggests that dynamic capabilities of an organization play an important role on transforming global knowledge management competences toward competitive advantage. These results provide evidence of the dynamic capabilities view that the dynamic capabilities refer to the capacity of the firm to shift its boundaries in order not to be overwhelmed when the environment pressure becomes excessive.

Lietuva įžengė į itin sparčios kaitos ir naujų iššūkių amžių, kuris kelia naujus reikalavimus ir asmeniui, ir visuomenei, ir švietimo sistemai. Kadangi švietimo kokybė tiesiogiai priklauso nuo švietimo įstaigose dirbančių vadovų bei pedagogų kompetencijų, svarbu išryškinti ir apibrėžti ikimokyklinių įstaigų direktoriaus pavaduotojų ugdymui vadybinių kompetencijų turinį, jų kryptingumą bei raiškos tendencijas. Tyrimo objektas – ikimokyklinių įstaigų direktoriaus pavaduotojų ugdymui vadybinės kompetencijos. Tyrimo tikslas – nustatyti ikimokyklinių įstaigų direktoriaus pavaduotojų ugdymui vadybinių kompetencijų sistemos turinį bei nustatyti jų raiškos tendencijas realybėje ir parengti rekomendacijas jų plėtotei. Magistro darbe naudojamas kiekybinis (ikimokyklinių įstaigų pedagogų bei direktoriaus pavaduotojų ugdymui) tyrimas. Tyrimo empirinę bazę sudaro 208 respondentai (192 - ikimokyklinių įstaigų pedagogai,16 - ikimokyklinių įstaigų direktoriaus pavaduotojai ugdymui). Magistro darbe pabrėžiama kompetencijos koncepcijos problematika, pateikiamos vadybinių kompetencijų apibrėžtys, nagrinėjami vadybinės kompetencijos modeliai, apibūdinami jų pagrindiniai skirtumai bei išryškinamos ypatybės; analizuojamas Lietuvos Respublikos švietimo dokumentuose pateiktų vadovo vadybinių kompetencijų turinys. Education quality assurance has a direct reference to heads of educational institutions. It is very importan to present and define the management competences content of deputy in Pre – school institutions. The Object of the research is managing preparation of Pre – school deputy. The purpose is to analyse expression and content of deputy management competences in Pre – school institutions. Fundamentado nos conceitos das competÃncias gerenciais e sua relaÃÃo com as estratÃgias, o presente estudo tem como objetivo central, verificar, segundo a percepÃÃo dos gestores das instituiÃÃes de ensino superior privado do MunicÃpio de Fortaleza-CE, se existe relaÃÃo entre as competÃncias gerenciais e as estratÃgias organizacionais. Com isso, procurou-se examinar as estratÃgias adotadas pelas instituiÃÃes de ensino superior, as competÃncias gerenciais, que na percepÃÃo dos gestores, sÃo essenciais a funÃÃo, bem como o grau de importÃncia que, tambÃm na percepÃÃo dos sujeitos da pesquisa, sÃo essenciais para a execuÃÃo das estratÃgias. O desenvolvimento do presente estudo foi concretizado atravÃs da estratÃgia metodolÃgica apoiada no mÃtodo quadripolar de De Bruyne, Herman e Schoutheete (1977), tendo como componentes: o pÃlo epistemolÃgico, o pÃlo teÃrico, o pÃlo morfolÃgico e o pÃlo tÃcnico. A pesquisa foi constituÃda de um levantamento preliminar de dados, com carÃter descritivo e exploratÃrio. A metodologia envolveu dados qualitativos e quantitativos coletados junto aos gestores de oito instituiÃÃes de ensino superior do setor privado de Fortaleza-CE, atravÃs de formulÃrios. O primeiro formulÃrio contendo quatro etapas: a primeira para obter o perfil dos gestores; a segunda para mapear as estratÃgias da instituiÃÃo; a terceira para mapear as core competences e as competÃncias gerenciais e a quarta e Ãltima etapa teve a intenÃÃo de perceber se as instituiÃÃes de ensino deixam claras as competÃncias exigidas ao gestor; o segundo formulÃrio foi construÃdo com base nas estratÃgias e competÃncias gerenciais mapeadas no primeiro formulÃrio e teve a intenÃÃo de medir, segundo a percepÃÃo dos gestores, o grau de importÃncia de cada competÃncia para a realizaÃÃo das estratÃgias. Com relaÃÃo aos resultados da pesquisa, constatou-se que as instituiÃÃes prÃ-definem as estratÃgias de forma participativa. A outra constataÃÃo à que, mesmo informalmente, os gestores sÃo conscientes das competÃncias necessÃrias a sua funÃÃo. With this aim, we started to check the strategies used by private higher institutions, the management competences, according to the directors, are essential to this activity, as well as the importance level that, in directors‟ point of view studied in this research, are essential in strategies execution. The development of this research was possible by using the Methodology Strategies based on four-pole method developed by De Bruyne, Herman and Schoutheete (1977), having four components, epistemological pole, theory pole, morphologic pole and technical pole. The research was made by a preliminary data finding, using exploratory and depiction way. The methodologies was made by using qualitative and quantify methods collected using forms filled in by 8 private higher education institution‟s managers in Fortaleza,Ce. The first form had four steps; the first step had as the main intention to know the director‟s profile, the second one wanted to check the Institution‟s strategies, the third step verified the core competences and the management competences, and the last step had the intention to realize if the Higher Institutions explain clearly the competences asked to the directors; the second form was built based in information collected in first form like strategies and management competences, and wished to measure, up to perception from directors, the importance of each competence to execute the strategies. After finishing the research, noticed as one result that institutions pre-define strategies in a participative way. The other result achieved is that the directors, even not officially, are conscious about the competences required in their function. And the last result was the fact that, in director‟s perception, there is a higher importance level when using management competences in order to execute the strategies, what let us think that there is a relation between them.

This work presents a case study in a beverage industry, in Santa Maria, RS, State of Rio Grande do Sul, which uses, in its activities, the Strategic Planning. The present research seeks to identify the managing competences of the Sales Manager of the company in question. In order to achieve this goal, there was a literature review, with a description and later analysis of some key models of strategic planning and strategic management in the literature as well as the current models of organization and structure of the Department of Sales of the company as well as the present and expected roles and the competences of the Sales Manager of the studied organization. In order to collect data, a structured interview was used, based on open and close questions, applied to the Marketing Manager, his/her superiors and subordinates. With these interviews, it was possible to identify the way the company s sales structure is organized, being an analysis of the managing competences that this professional has and should have, for and efficient perform of his functions and the optimization of the company s Strategic Management. / Este trabalho apresenta um estudo de caso em uma indústria de bebidas, localizada no município de Santa Maria, no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, a qual utiliza, em suas atividades, o Planejamento Estratégico. Com tais entrevistas, foi possível a indentificação de como é organizada a estrutura de vendas da empresa, sendo feita uma análise das competências gerenciais que tal profissional possui e deveria possuir, para um desempenho eficiente de sua função e uma otimização da Gestão Estratégica da organização.

The present work presents a case study, in a beverage industry, in Santa Maria, RS, which uses Strategic Planning in its activities. Competências gerenciais dos gestores de instituições públicas de ensino e pesquisa : um estudo sobre a região do Vale do Paraíba Paulista

As competências e habilidades gerenciais, necessárias ao exercício de cargos executivos das organizações, têm sido objeto de estudos e debates acadêmicos e profissionais. Nas organizações públicas brasileiras, esse assunto vem ganhando destaque, na medida em que se discute a necessidade de melhorar a qualidade dos gastos visando tornar a gestão pública mais eficaz e eficiente. Neste trabalho é apresentado um estudo sobre as competências gerenciais dos gestores das Instituições Públicas de Ensino e Pesquisa da região do Vale do Paraíba Paulista. A partir de pesquisa bibliográfica e documental, foram identificadas as competências e habilidades mais relevantes para o exercício de cargos de gestão em organizações públicas e foi realizada uma pesquisa de campo visando investigar a importância e o domínio atribuídos pelos gestores das organizações estudadas aos itens obtidos na pesquisa bibliográfica e documental. Foi aplicado um questionário a uma amostra composta por quarenta e três gestores das três instituições. As respostas foram obtidas por meio de entrevistas, sendo o questionário semiestruturado. Os dados coletados foram analisados visando identificar um conjunto de competências cujos gestores apontaram ter pouco domínio e que, ao mesmo tempo, foram consideradas importantes para o exercício dos cargos de gestão. Os resultados obtidos apontam que, apesar das diferenças entre as instituições pesquisadas, o conjunto das competências consideradas relevantes e de baixo domínio é essencialmente comum para as organizações estudadas. Tal resultado abre a perspectiva de elaborar propostas de programas de formação gerencial para atender às instituições públicas de ensino e pesquisa. / The competences and management abilities necessary for the exercise of management positions in the organizations, have been the subject of studies and academic and professionals debates. In the Brazilian public organizations, this issue is gaining attention as it discusses the need to improve the quality of the expenditure in order to make public administration more effective and efficient. This work presents a study on the management abilities of managers in public institutions for Education and Research in the Paraíba Paulista Valley. From literature and documents, competences and abilities considered to be the most relevant to the exercise of management positions in public organizations were identified and a field survey was applied in order to investigate the importance and domain attributed by managers in the studied organizations to the itens obtained from literature and documents. A questionnaire to a sample of 43 managers from the 3 institutions was administered. The answers were obtained through interviews, from a semi structured questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed to identify a set of abilities with which managers have little pointed domain and at the same time, were considered important for the exercise of management positions. The results indicate that, despite the differences between the institutions researched, the number of competences considered relevant and low domain is essentially common to the organizations studied. This result opens the prospect of drawing up proposals for management training programs to meet the public institutions of education and research.

CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / Fundamentado nas teorias da gestÃo de instituiÃÃo de ensino superior e da competÃncia gerencial, este trabalho tem como objetivo investigar o modelo de gestÃo institucional predominante e grau de utilizaÃÃo e de importÃncia das competÃncias gerenciais nas instituiÃÃes privadas de ensino superior â IPES na cidade de Fortaleza-CE, segundo a percepÃÃo dos coordenadores de curso de graduaÃÃo. Utilizou-se da metodologia quadripolar de De Bruyne, Herman e De Schoutheete (1977), abordando as temÃticas em questÃo de diferentes perspectivas atravÃs de um amplo projeto que envolveu os eixos epistemolÃgico, teÃrico, morfolÃgico e tÃcnico. A epistemologia crÃtica de Bachelard (1968), a resenha histÃrica das competÃncias e da educaÃÃo superior no Brasil, alÃm de suas origens, teorias e perspectivas crÃticas preenchem os campos epistemolÃgico e teÃrico deste trabalho. No eixo morfolÃgico, apresenta-se os principais modelos de gestÃo de instituiÃÃes de ensino superior e de competÃncias gerenciais que se apÃiam na teoria antes esboÃada no pÃlo teÃrico. Trata-se, portanto, de uma pesquisa de abordagem predominantemente quantitativa, de carÃter descritivo e exploratÃrio. A coleta dos dados foi realizada por meio de 02 instrumentos, o questionÃrio e a entrevista estruturada. O primeiro foi submetido ao tratamento estatÃstico por meio de tÃcnicas descritivas e multivariadas, enquanto o segundo foi analisado atravÃs da tÃcnica de anÃlise de conteÃdo (AC). Os principais resultados deste estudo apontaram que as IPES investigadas sÃo relativamente jovens quanto ao seu tempo de atuaÃÃo no mercado e que estas fazem uso de diversas caracterÃsticas dos modelos de gestÃo institucionais investigados, mas, em geral, nÃo se pode determinar a preponderÃncia de nenhum deles, pois as respostas nesta seÃÃo se revelaram homogÃneas. Quanto Ãs competÃncias gerenciais, a grande maioria obteve um alto grau de utilizaÃÃo e de importÃncia, segundo a percepÃÃo dos coordenadores de curso. As competÃncias gerenciais que mais se destacaram nestes dois itens foram: ter conhecimentos das exigÃncias legais do MinistÃrio da EducaÃÃo - MEC, relacionar-se com pessoas, identificar e resolver problemas, gerir e executar o projeto polÃtico-pedagÃgico do curso, colaborar com o desenvolvimento dos alunos, manter uma atitude de disponibilidade, orientar e elogiar pessoas e desempenhos e gerenciar e priorizar o tempo. A grande utilizaÃÃo e importÃncia das competÃncias gerenciais revelam indÃcios do ânovoâ mundo capitalista (GAULEJAC, 2007), no qual o poder gerencialista requer do profissional um alto desempenho (a utilizaÃÃo de um nÃmero ilimitado de competÃncias), impossÃvel de ser sustentado sem nenhuma conseqÃÃncia para o indivÃduo. / Based on the theories of tertiary education institutional management and theories of managerial competence, this work aims to investigate the predominant institutional management model and the degrees of usage and importance of the managerial competences in private tertiary education institutions - I.P.E.S. in the city of Fortaleza-, according to the perception held by the coordinators of graduate courses. The quadripolar methodology by De Bruyne, Herman & De Schoutheete (1977) approaching the subjects involved from various angles in a comprehensive project which encompassed the epistemological, theoretical, morphological and technical axises. BachelardÂs critical epistemology (1968), the historical summary of competences in Brazil, besides its origin, theories and critical perspectives occupy both the epistemological and theoretical fields of this work. On the morphological axis, the main tertiary education institution management models and managerial competences founded on the theory beforehand sketched on the theoretical axis are shown. This is a quanti-qualitative approach survey with a descriptive and exploratory character. The data were collected by means of two instruments: a questionnaire and a structured interview. The questionnaire underwent a statistical treatment when various descriptive techniques were used. The interview was analyzed with a content-analysis technique (AC). The main results of this study showed that the investigated IPES are relatively young regarding their time of work in the market and that they use many characteristics from the investigated managerial models, but, in general, the preponderancy of any of them cannot be determined, as the answers in this section were homogenous. About managerial competences, the vast majority obtained a high degree of use and importance according to the perception of the course coordinators. The managerial competences that stood out the most in these two items were: to have knowledge of the legal demands by the Ministry Of Education-MEC, to deal with people, to identify and solve problems, to manage and execute the pedagogic and political project of the course, to collaborate with the development of the students, to keep an availability attitude, to guide and praise people and performances, and to manage and prioritize time. The wide use and importance of the managerial competences reveal features of a" new" capitalist world (GAULEJAC, 2007), in which the managing power requires from the professional a high performance (the use of a limitless number of competences) impossible to be sustained without any consequence to the individual.
