A revision of the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program content / Revision of the Challenging Athletes' Minds for Personal Success/Life Skills Program content

Morrissey, Joanna L. January 2007 (has links)
In 1991, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) created the Challenging Athletes' Minds for Personal Success (CHAMPS)/Life Skills Program to support the student development initiatives of participating universities and colleges and to enhance the quality of the collegiate student-athlete experience within the university setting (NCAA, 2005). The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program focuses on five areas: Academic Excellence, Athletic Excellence, Personal Development, Career Development, and Service. Very few modifications have been made to the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program Educational material. The material is out of date and does not meet the needs of instructors or collegiate student-athletes. Many university faculty members use various forms of technology to supplement their teaching methods. The current presentation of the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program content exists only in paper- and pencil- format. The purpose of this creative project was to update the existing CHAMPS/Life Skills Program material and transform the material into an electronic format. This project focused on updating the Personal Development chapter, including updates to topics such as: stress management and self-esteem. A Sport Psychology chapter was created to equip CHAMPS/Life Skills Program instructors with sport psychology knowledge applicable to a collegiate student-athlete population. Electronic and additional hard copy resources were created in this project. The updated chapters and an evaluation form were distributed to three academicians familiar with the Creative Project. The academicians were asked to provide feedback and evaluate the updated chapters. The provided feedback can be used during the final preparation of the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program Manual. / School of Physical Education, Sport, and Exercise Science

A semiotic analysis of user manuals for two blender brands

Jensel, Leanne C.L. January 2016 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / Technical documentation comes in a variety of forms such as installation or operation manuals, quick reference guides, maintenance manuals, user manuals, policy and procedure manuals or marketing brochures and flyers (Walsh, 2012). What all these sub-genres have in common is that the texts that correspond to them seek to inform and give instruction about procedures, behaviour and actions related to products (Schäffner & Wiesemann, 2001: 49). Manuals have been described as “the complete reference source for a product’s operation, maintenance and safety” (Cowley & Wogalter, 2011: 1773). For the purpose of this study, we will focus on one form of technical documentation, namely user manuals. The terms “documentation” and “manuals” will be used interchangeably. Although there are probably as many manuals as there are products in our homes, these user manuals have not frequently been the subject of academic study in the South African context. The relative lack of research into user manuals is especially regrettable at a time when new product liability legislation and trade regulations (e.g. the Consumer Protect Act of South Africa, 2008) have enhanced the profile of product manuals in public and regulatory discourse. As a result of this relative neglect, it is not known how understandable, relevant and therefore empowering users of products find these manuals. There is also not much knowledge concerning the level of compliance in manuals to the provisions of product liability legislation. This study therefore proposes to investigate the comprehensibility and usability of user manuals associated with two products (blenders) marketed in South Africa. It will draw on theories and methods of analysis associated with technical writing, analysis of terminological consistency, genre and multimodality, to evaluate the selected manuals from the standpoint of a subset of the criteria listed in Section 22(2) of the Consumer Protection Act of South Africa, No. 68 of 2008, which was later amended in 2011. The methodology for the proposed study will combine text analysis (by the researcher) with comprehension and usability tasks performed by selected participants. Data from these sources will be collated and analysed to determine the conformity of the manuals to criteria in the Consumer Protection Act of South Africa, and the effect the manuals have on product users. Areas for optimising (improving) the manuals will also be identified.

Sostisso, Débora Francez January 2011 (has links)
This dissertation analyses the discursivities present in contemporary educational books that search to treat the education of boys and girls, namely: Raising Girls of the authoress Gisela Preuschoff (2008), Raising Boys of the author Steve Biddulph (2006), How to raise happy and confident girls and How to raise happy and confident boys, both titles of the authoress Elizabeth Hartley-Brewer (2004a, 2004b). Anchored in a post-structuralist perspective and from the theoretical contributions of Gender Studies and Cultural Studies, the research aimed to discuss and to problematize how such cultural artifacts, invested advices, prescriptions, hints, regulations, serve as educational instances, suggesting specific forms of individuals, in this case, mothers, fathers and educators, to lead their lives and other people and to relate to themselves and others from and on behalf of certain truths. Thus, we can say that the books operate as educational manuals. Also, I tried to look at the mechanisms, strategic games and the techniques that make the speeches that are presented work. This study is affiliated to the discussions that search to problematize the relationships between power and childhood, or of how childhood is captured in the knowledge-power relationships, as this infantile gendered subject is produced and how operate the strategies that aim their government. In order to analyze the politics of truth present in the titles in issue, were observed the language used and the different discursive fields that are based on the knowledge and the proposal put there. The analysis allow to say that the ways of "educating" presented in these publications positionates the subjects in different ways and particular, constituting boys, fathers, mothers, educators, by specific human technologies.

Is there a manual? a discoursive-linguistic analysis of two puericulture manuals

Rosane Fernandes Lira 30 September 2009 (has links)
As conclusões apontaram à identificação de diferentes práticas, formações e comunidades discursivas, relacionadas a cada manual / Our dissertation aims to understand what puericulture manuals may indicate of the society configuration throughout time. The core of this research is the concept of discoursive practices as proposed by Maingueneau (1997, 2005, 2008) who suggests all discoursive levels are integrated to social practices. Our study focus on the following books: A vida do bebê, by the brazilian pediatrician Dr. Rinaldo De Lamare (1950, 7th edition; 2002, 41st edition) and Bebê: manual do proprietário, by the North-American pediatrician Dr. Louis Borgenitch and his son Joe Borgenitch (2005, 1st edition), translated to Portuguese by Maria Alayde Carvalho. Our corpus is composed by the covers, summaries and the introductions of the before mentioned publications. Based on the relationship between diverse discourse levels, we tried to verify their constitution and the discourses that pervade each publication, highlighting the applicability of the notion of discoursive practices. The conclusions pointed towards the identification of different discoursive practices, discoursive formations and communities related to each manual

Manuais do professor do ensino médio: imagens discursivas de professor e de ensino de ELE / Teacher's manuals of the school : discursive images of teacher and teaching of ELE

Raabe Costa Alves 10 October 2010 (has links)
This thesis investigates documents that systematize the work of teachers, among them the teachers guide, which organizes the teaching activity with a textbook. The dissertation examines teacher's manuals of the Spanish books selected by the Brazilian MEC to be distributed to teachers in 2005, according to the law 11 161, which imposes the teaching of Spanish language in high schools across the country. The main purpose was to identify the discursive images of teachers and the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language built into them. The theoretical foundations here adopted come from the analysis of speech based on enunciation, as well as the concepts of dialogism (Bakhtin, 1979) and polyphony (Bakhtin, 1979; Ducrot, 1987). The results in these manuals point at the construction of teachers images such as: one that needs to be guided in his task, who is unable to make choices in the classroom; a teacher receiving orders; outdated with the current teaching methodologies, thus in need of professional development. There is still a teacher seeking instructions to facilitate his work. In that which concerns the vision of language, we find a manual that emphasizes working with reading, based on a conception that emphasizes discursive aspects; and others who claim to follow the communicative approach, focused on the language used, however adopt procedures oriented in a conception of language as a structure, and / or blend both perspectives
