The Factors That Drive Success in Motion Picture Development : An Australian Context

The motion picture industry is characterized by a high degree of artistic innovation that revolves around the project rather than the firm. Success is elusive and firms operate in an environment of symmetrical ignorance, that is, high levels of demand uncertainty as well as product uncertainty. This makes managing the commercial development of new products difficult. The study of the factors that drive success in new product development have been significant, however, little attention has been given to experiential and creatively driven products such as motion pictures. While a number of studies have attempted to find accurate means to predict performance in motion pictures, most of these have met with limited results, yet few, if any, have linked the knowledge gained from the study of new product development with the industry. Similarly, the impact of market orientation on firm performance and new product success has been the focus of much empirical research since the late 1980's and has been shown to be significantly associated with new product performance. Here, the marketing literature and the NPD literature converge, yet few studies have attempted to study how the same concepts might apply in motion picture production. The primary focus of this study was to explore the feasibility of the NPD and market orientation literature in the development of successful motion picture and whether or not similar application of this knowledge is tenable. As such, the study centers around two broad research issues: RESEARCH ISSUE 1: How can Australian films perform better? In other words, what are the factors that drive success in Australian motion picture production? RESEARCH ISSUE 2: What is the role of the audience in the development of successful Motion Pictures in Australia? Or in other words, do Australian filmmakers need to be "close" to their audience (market oriented) in order to attain higher levels of success. Australia has been used as a context primarily due to the accessibility of data. This represents a relatively new setting for the study of NPD and market orientation and a new industry. Therefore, an exploratory study was designed which utilized in-depth interviews with experts from three sectors of the Australian motion picture industry. This was deemed to be the best approach given the dearth of previous studies in this setting and the fact that the majority of past industry studies have been quantitative. The findings reveal some support for a significant relationship between success and new product development activities such as product advantage, market orientation, up-front homework, early product definition, cross-functional and coordinated teams, and launch. Product advantage, however, is better understood in terms of a movie's marketability and playability, that is, the perceived superiority of its attributes before and after its viewing. A market orientation is likely to be more effective in the motion picture industry when it helps a firm lead its customers rather than encourages a firm to be led by them. Finally, despite previous studies in the Australian industry, the number of scripts in development is unlikely to matter. What matters is that the scripts that are ready to move into production are evaluated fully and that full support is provided to those that make it through in order to give them the best chance for success.

Orientations stratégiques complémentaires et microentreprises familiales dans une économie émergente / Complementary Strategic Orientations and Family Owned Micro-enterprises in an Emerging Economy

Cette thèse s'efforce de comprendre l'impact de multiples orientations stratégiques sur la performance de l'entreprise micro-familiale dans un contexte d’économie en développement, en trois phases distinctes. Tout d'abord, nous avons posé la question de savoir si les micro-entrepreneurs familiaux améliorent leur performance en développant simultanément des activités axées sur l'entrepreneuriat et sur le marché. Nous avons également étudié si ces orientations stratégiques complémentaires sur la performance sont favorisées par le capital social, sous forme de liens commerciaux et sociaux. En outre, nous avons soulevé une question sur l’effet de l’intervention de la famille sur la performance dans le contexte de multiples orientations stratégiques. L'étude initiale a fourni un thème de recherche fécond sur l'entreprise familiale dans un environnement institutionnel. Nous avons montré que les micro-entreprises familiales optimisent leurs performances commerciales en investissant dans des niveaux plus élevés d'orientation entrepreneuriale et commerciale. En outre, le processus de socialisation avec l’environnement commercial augmente la performance grâce aux effets combinés des orientations entrepreneuriale et de marché dans un contexte d’économies émergentes. Contrairement à ce que l’on pourrait penser, l'étude a révélé que la performance des entreprises augmente lorsque les deux orientations sont élevées, mais seulement lorsque l'engagement familial est faible. Ce résultat a permis d'améliorer la connaissance que l’on a de l'influence de la famille sur l'élaboration de comportements stratégiques pour atteindre une meilleure performance. L'étude subséquente, examine et révèle le côté sombre et lumineux de la famille en relation avec des stratégies d'orientation entrepreneuriale et de marché et son impact sur la performance. L'étude quantitative finale contredit la recherche antérieure révélant l'importance des capacités familiales dans le soutien des comportements à risque pour accroître la richesse familiale dans un contexte émergent. / This dissertation endeavors to understand the impact of multiple strategic orientations on the performance of the micro family business in developing economy settings in three distinct phases. First, we raised a question whether family micro-entrepreneurs gain performance benefits by developing simultaneously high levels of entrepreneurial-oriented and market-oriented activities. We also investigated whether these complementary strategic orientations on performance are rewarded by cultivating high levels of firm social capital in the form of business and social network ties. In addition, we raised a question how family fits together in the context of multiple strategic orientations to achieve superior performance. The initial study, therefore, yielded a rich research theme related to family business in the context of institutionally constrained environment. We have shown that micro family businesses do maximize their business performance by investing on higher levels of entrepreneurial and market orientation. Furthermore, firm socialization process with their external business entities increase the performance benefits by combined effects of entrepreneurial and market orientations in an emerging market setting. Contrary to conventional wisdom, the study revealed that business profitability increases when both orientations are high but only when family involvement is low. This result yielded important insights into the role of family influence in shaping firm strategic behaviors to achieve better performance. The subsequent study, therefore, reviews and revealed the dark and bright side of the family in combination with entrepreneurial and market orientation behaviors and its consequent impact on performance. The final quantitative study contradicts previous research finding revealing the importance of family-based capabilities in supporting risk-taking behaviors to increase family wealth in an emerging market setting.

Market Orientation : the effect of TMT shared leadership and perceived contextual discretion

Ever since the 1960s, it has been argued that customer needs have to be a firm's core business purpose. One way for firm to achieve this, is through use of market orientation strategies. Recent research has found that shared leadership could have a positive effect on market orientation, as well as within top management teams. The ability that top management teams have to influence the organization, is further found to be effected by the level of discretion they operate within. This thesis seeks to explain the relationship between shared leadership within top management teams and market orientation, and how this relationship in turn might be contingent on perceived contextual discretion. This is done through a quantitative method, where a survey study is done on the top management teams in Swedish saving banks. The findings of this thesis show that shared leadership is positively related with market orientation, and that this relationship is not contingent on perceived contextual discretion. The variable of perceived contextual discretion was, however, found to have the effect of an independent variable with a strong positive direct effect on market orientation within the financial sector. One limitation of this thesis is that the statements for perceived contextual discretion has been developed only from concepts, and have not been tested in any previous study. This brings with it a risk that these statements did not measure the concept in the most optimal way. The theoretical contributions of this thesis are how perceived contextual discretion is found to have a direct effect on market orientation. This further imply that perceived contextual discretion has an effect on the level of market orientation within a firm.

[pt] O conceito de Orientação para o Mercado tem sido exaustivamente pesquisado nos últimos anos e há evidências de que a mesma é benéfica para as empresas, melhorando a sua competitividade. Esse tema remete a três perguntas: Como planejar um processo de Orientação para o Mercado?, Como implantar um processo de Orientação para o Mercado? e Orientar uma Empresa para o Mercado gera resultado positivo?. A grande maioria das pesquisas dedica-se à primeira e à terceira pergunta, ou seja, estudam a conceituação da Orientação para o Mercado, o planejamento ou os resultados da implantação. Há uma lacuna, portanto, na segunda pergunta - Como implantar um processo de Orientação para o Mercado?. Este trabalho buscou o preenchimento desta lacuna através da identificação dos principais desafios, dificuldades e soluções presentes no processo de implantação da Orientação para o Mercado em uma empresa familiar. Os resultados obtidos demonstram a importância de entender a Orientação para o Mercado como um processo de mudança cultural na organização e, sendo assim, considerar os aspectos humanos que regem os comportamentos diante da implantação desta nova cultura organizacional. Os resultados demonstram, também, a relevância do entendimento das especificidades de uma empresa familiar. Resultados complementares, futuras pesquisas e implicações gerenciais foram, ainda, discutidos. / [en] The Market Orientation concept has been intensively researched in the last years and there are evidences that it is beneficial to the companies, improving their competitiveness. This subject remits to three questions: How to plan a process of Market Orientation?, How to implement a process of Market Orientation? and Does the Market Orientation process generate a positive result to the Company?. Most researches focus on the first and third questions which means that they study the Market Orientation either at planning or implementation level. As a consequence, there is a gap concerning the second question - How to implement a process of Market Orientation?. This work intended to fulfill this gap through the identification of the main challenges, difficulties and solutions present in the Market Orientation process implementation in a family owned company. The results showed the importance of understanding the Market Orientation as a process of cultural changing in the organization and the human aspects that determine the behaviors facing this new organizational culture. Results also demonstrated the relevance of understanding the specific characteristics of a family owned company. Complementary results, future researches and managerial implications have been discussed too.

Orientação para o mercado, inovação e performance organizacional sob os parâmetros da competitividade: um estudo no setor hoteleiro do Rio Grande do Sul

This paper examines the market orientation, innovation and organizacional performance from competitive parameters, adapted from Sandvik & Sandvik (2003) to the reality of hospitality companies of the Rio Grande do Sul. Through a descriptive research of transversal cut and based on the analysis of the data, the differences of averages of answers applying test- F, demonstrated that the majority of the searched hotels is in the market for 10 years and that 50% are small business companies. Moreover, 70% of the hospitality companies adopted as competitive strategy the adaptation to the necessities and demands of the customers. One evidenced is that the capacity of the hospitality companies in innovating for the market and for the companies happens independently of its competitive adoption, however considering market orientation and organizacional performance some elements had shown different behaviors, that had rejected the initial hypothesis. The research design consisted on Introduction, Theoretical Research, where the constructs and concepts are detached giving bases to the study, and Methodology. Finally, the Results descriptions of the survey, ending with final considerations in the Conclusion. / Este estudo apresenta a Orientação para o Mercado, a Inovação e a Performance Organizacional abordados através dos parâmetros de competitividade, adaptados do construto de Sandvik e Sandvik (2003) à realidade de 62 empresas hoteleiras localizadas no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Através de uma pesquisa descritiva de corte transversal único e da análise dos dados, através das diferenças de médias de respostas aplicando o teste-F, constatou-se inicialmente que a maioria dos hotéis pesquisados está no mercado há mais de 10 anos e que 50% são empresas de pequeno porte. Além disso, 70% das empresas hoteleiras do RS adotam como estratégia competitiva a adaptação para atender as necessidades e demandas dos clientes. Além disso, foi possível verificar que a capacidade das empresas hoteleiras em inovar acontece independentemente de sua adoção competitiva, comprovando a hipótese inicial, contudo algumas das variáveis constituidoras dos construtos de orientação para o mercado e de performance organizacional mostraram diferentes comportamento em relação as diferentes estratégias competitivas adotadas. Esta Dissertação de Mestrado está composta, respectivamente, por Introdução, pela Fundamentação Teórica, onde são destacados os construtos que dão base ao estudo, e pela Metodologia. Por último, apresenta os Resultados, que detalham o levantamento e as análises das informações, tendo seu fechamento nas considerações finais aportadas na Conclusão.

A orientação para o mercado (OPM) tem se mostrado uma alternativa interessante no ambiente competitivo atual. Diversos estudos têm demonstrado que essa prática traz retornos favoráveis ao desempenho financeiro e mercadológico das empresas. Dado seus resultados favoráveis a OPM, que inicialmente referia-se à orientação para o cliente, e posteriormente para o cliente e concorrente, vem ganhando abrangência cada vez maior, atingindo outros elos da cadeia produtiva, como os canais de distribuição e o consumidor final. A proximidade com os clientes, a integração dos diversos departamentos da empresa, e o foco na entrega de valor superior, colaboram para a construção de um ambiente criativo que privilegie idéias inovadoras. Neste contexto, buscou-se conhecer a relação existente entre a Orientação para a Tecnologia e o Marketing de Relacionamento em empresas orientadas para o mercado, seguindo os pressupostos de um modelo de OPM, sugerido neste trabalho, e composto por três elementos: cultura transversal (CT), formação e disseminação de inteligência (FDI), e estratégia de ação (EA). O foco principal da pesquisa, portanto, girou em torno das variáveis: orientação para a tecnologia e marketing de relacionamento, e suas principais relações. Para atender aos objetivos deste trabalho, realizaram-se de estudos de casos e análises de dados econômicos de dez empresas petroquímicas atuantes no Brasil, onde se efetuou um levantamento de campo, com questões pré-estruturadas, baseadas em argumentos teóricos. Dentre os resultados obtidos, chamou a atenção adoção dos modelos inovativo technology push ou technology push e demand pull em concomitância com a prática de marketing relacional. Percebeu-se, também, que as empresas buscam um equilíbrio entre orientação para a tecnologia e o marketing de relacionamento, de forma que estas duas forças se complementem. O resultado da pesquisa foi colocado em um gráfico onde foram caracterizadas as diferentes categorias da estratégia de ação (EA). Outro ponto avaliado na pesquisa diz respeito à abrangência da OPM, neste sentido, percebeu-se que tal orientação contempla, ainda, a orientação para o fornecedor, como elemento-chave para a entrega de valor superior ao cliente, e para a manutenção de vantagens competitivas pela empresa. / Market orientation has been identified as an interesting alternative to companies, in the current competitive environment. Several studies had demonstrated that this practice brings favorable returns to the financial and marketing performance of the companies. Due to these favorable results, market orientation, initially orientated only towards the end customer, became oriented towards both the end customer and competitor, reaching other links of the supply chain, as the canals of distribution and the final user. Moreover, the proximity with customers, the integration of different departments of the company, and the focus on the delivery of value, all permit the construction of a creative environment that privileges innovative ideas. The present dissertation analyzes the relationship between Technology Orientation and Relationship Market in petrochemical companies in Brazil, and presents a model of market orientation composed for three elements: transversal culture (TC), formation and dissemination of intelligence (FDI) and strategy of action (SA). The methodology used was multiple-cases study and the analysis of quantitative data from this sector. To fulfill this purpose, a structured questionnaire was developed, based in the theoretical arguments, and to be answered by the ten operating companies working in the Petrochemical sector in Brazil. The main focus of the work was on the technological orientation and market orientation relationship, and the possible relationship between these two orientations. One of the results indicated that these companies are adopting an innovative model of technology push or technology push and demand pull, concurrent to the relational marketing model. Thus, the technology orientation and the relational marketing are not opposed, but complementary in companies oriented for the market. The result of the research was placed in a graph in which had been characterized the different categories of the action strategy. Another point evaluated in the research, is the scope of the orientation for the market. In this case, this study shows that this orientation contemplates the orientation for the supplier, as key element for delivering superior value to the customer, and also for the maintenance of competitive advantages for the company.

Gestão de marketing em um contexto de demandas divergentes entre stakeholders: um estudo exploratório / Marketing management in a context of divergent stakeholders\' demands: an exploratory study

A partir dos anos 1950, o conceito de marketing e a orientação para mercado destacaram a importância do consumidor para as empresas. Nas últimas décadas surgiu uma nova visão que propõe que as demandas de outros públicos também são relevantes, como colocam a orientação para stakeholders e a de marketing holístico, entre outras. Em alguns contextos, porém, consumidor e outros públicos têm demandas divergentes, como na indústria de alimentos brasileira atualmente. Se, por um lado, aumenta o consumo de industrializados, identifica-se que, por outro, o governo tenta mudar a composição desses alimentos para reduzir o teor de ingredientes considerados prejudiciais à saúde se consumidos em excesso e, assim como ONGs, tenta desestimular seu consumo. O presente estudo busca, por meio de uma pesquisa empírica, com amostra não-probabilística, analisar como é feita a gestão de marketing nesse contexto. Foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas com sete gestores de marcas de alimentos industrializados que atuam em categorias onde o governo identifica necessidade de mudanças. O elemento de partida, por tangibilizar as decisões de gestão da marca e facilitar a abordagem do assunto, foi uma campanha de comunicação de marketing recente. As respostas foram analisadas pelo método de análise de conteúdo e os resultados indicam que, na gestão de marketing, as demandas do consumidor são as de maior relevância, até porque, sem colocá-las em evidência, há risco para o sucesso do negócio. Há algumas ações descritas pelos gestores que foram motivadas por pressões de outros públicos, como a mudança de público-alvo e de mensagem em campanhas de comunicação e a reformulação de produtos - neste último exemplo, porém, não houve adesão do mercado em dois casos narrados. Isso não significa, entretanto, que o consumidor não incorpore as discussões em torno da saudabilidade proposta por outros públicos e que, atualmente, evidenciam as demandas divergentes entre stakeholders. Um nicho, caracterizado principalmente pelo poder aquisitivo mais alto, tem interesses que vão ao encontro do que propõem o governo e as ONGs. O grande mercado consumidor, porém, ainda valoriza mais o acesso a novas categorias que se tornou possível com o recente aumento de renda no Brasil. O caminho para que as mudanças ocorram de maneira mais ampla e rápido, de acordo com os gestores, passa pela informação, de maneira a diminuir a divergência entre as demandas dos stakeholders envolvidos na questão. / In the 1950s, the marketing concept and the market orientation emphasized the importance of the consumer to companies. In the last decades, new concepts emerged, which highlight that the demand of other publics are also priorities, as state the stakeholder and the holistic marketing orientations, for example. In some contexts, however, consumers and other publics might have divergent demands, as in the Brazilian food industry nowadays. On one hand, the consumption of industrialized items increases and, on the other, government tries to change the formulation of those products to reduce the quantity of ingredients that are considered unhealthy if eaten in high levels and tries to discourage its consumption. Some NGOs are also dedicated to the subject and support the government\'s point of view. This study analyses the marketing management of brands in that context through an empirical research with a non-probability sample. In-depth interviews were conducted with seven marketing professionals of the food industry whose categories are involved in the discussions started by the Brazilian government. A recent marketing communication campaign was chosen as the starting point of the interview since it is a public expression of the brand and it could facilitate the conversation and analysis of the subject. The analytical procedure used was content analysis. The results show that consumers\' demands are the most relevant for marketing management because if the market is not satisfied, the business might be on risk. Some actions presented by the managers were motivated by pressure imposed by other publics, such as the change of the communication target for two brands and the implementation of new formulas for some products of other two brands. In these cases, however, the market did not accept the healthier options. Nevertheless, consumers are more aware of healthy habits. A niche of high-income people has demands that are closer to those presented by the government. But the average consumer, due to the recent income increase in Brazil, still places more value on having access to new categories than on making choices. In order for changes to happen faster and widely, bringing the consumers and government\'s demands closer, managers point out the need of information.

The dual aspects of supplier contribution in sustainable innovation: Yes or No?

Companies are increasingly motivated to deal with the issue of sustainability not just from a moral standpoint, but also because these issues may be a major root of innovation. To achieve these sustainable innovations, the number of manufacturers who invest in specific resources has been increasing. Supplier contributions to manufacturing company sustainable innovations are influenced by particular investments and specially the human capital investments, which emphasizes the supplier's role in supporting the producer with sustainable innovations. The precise investments might help suppliers contribute to sustainable innovation. However, if a company invests too much in certain resources, such as human capital, the beneficial impacts of such investments may diminish, and the supplier's participation in sustainable innovation may be hampered. Various internal contingency variables can moderate the relationship between the specific investments and sustainable innovation contribution of suppliers. Thus, this study aims at this research gap. This research aimed to study the relationship between human capital specific investments and supplier sustainable innovation contribution in developed markets considering the role of learning and absorptive capacity, and market orientation. This research can be considered as the deductive, quantitative and field research in which the researchers collected the primary data by using a structured questionnaire. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire confirmed through different quantitative and qualitative approaches. The research sample was chosen by using the convenience sampling. In order to respond to the questionnaire surveys, top- and middle-level managers from 355 Swedish corporations in which suppliers have been incorporated in the corporation’s sustainable innovation activities addressed. Finally, A total of 960 questionnaires for 355 companies handed out, and 102 being returned and analysed. The regression curve estimation method revealed that there is a linear relationship between human capital specific investments and supplier sustainable innovation contribution. Besides, through the hierarchical multiple linear regression, the researchers demonstrated that absorptive capacity and market orientation can play the moderating role in this relationship, while the learning capacity can partially play such role in this relationship. Eventually, the theoretical, managerial and sustainability implications discussed and the limitations of the research in addition to the future research possibilities addressed.

Culture, Conduct and Innovation: A Deconstruction of Market Orientation

Purpose: This purpose of this study is to deconstruct market orientation to explore how culture interrelates with conduct and value-creating innovation and its effect on performance. The authors suggest that market orientation is an organizational identity that can be built and managed for sustained competitive advantage.Design/methodology/approach: The authors use a split sample of 553 Canadian small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in both the manufacturing and technical service sectors. Hierarchical moderated regression analysis is used to test the main hypothesis that culture moderates the relationship between conduct and innovation. Support for the respective hypotheses is determined by the statistical significance of each focal variable.Findings: The study finds that culture does in fact moderate the relationship between conduct and innovation but only in service firms, not in manufacturing firms.Research limitations/implications: Theoretical implications include establishing support for the main premise of the paper, namely, that market-oriented culture interacts with the behavioral component of market orientation influencing the firm’s ability to create value through innovation.Practical implications: Managerial implications include the refinement of the many conceptualizations of the innovation construct by establishing innovation as value-creating. It also provides insight on how firm culture relates to the systems and processes used to operationalize both a market and innovation conduct within the firm.Originality/value: This paper provides a unique insight into the marketing/innovation interface, specifically in the context of SMEs.
