This dissertation approaches the poetic work of Colombian poet Marta Quiñónez, who currently lives in Medelin, which has been published to date, consisting of the following volumes: Noctívago (1998), Acantilado (1999), Abecedário de Eximición (2000), Eva (2001), Kartalá (2002), La Trinidad (2005), Arcanos (2007), No. Libro de haripalas (2010), Dame tu canto ciudad (2012), Conversaciones en Comala (2012), Paréntesis (2013), El rostro del pan (2014) and Continente Mohíno (2016), originally published in 1996. The work focuses on four main axes: diaspora, migration, territory and home, in dialogue with the themes of love, affectivity, territorialization/deterritorialization in urban centers, and the house, bypassing gender and racial discussions in the division of geographic and social spaces. We discuss how this homosexual black female body and subjectivity reconfigures itself for the subjective construction of its home, considering the experience of deterritorialization and migration, taking the poem as the reterritorializing force that elevates the notions of belonging and connection to its own poetic creation as main catalyst of her experiences. We go through all her work in a certain thematic chronology, beginning with Continente Mohíno (1996) until El rostro del pan (2014), whose main objective is to understand the relation established between her poetic writing and the contemporary diaspora imaginary and migratory flows, concerning territories and the subjective construction of home. The versatility and creativity of her poetry is blatant for her own life course of movement and uprooting, which converge to a literature capable of sheltering her experiences beyond the historical and social reductions of the homosexual black woman's place in literature and society.

Compete Globally, Lose Locally? : The effects of Rio de Janeiro ́s hostesship of FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games on residents in informal settlements - A case study of ’favela’ Santa MartaOlsson, Hanna, Klarberg, Renée January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this master thesis project is to investigate how cities strive to be globally competitive affect local residents in informal settlements, generically called slum dwellers. This question is approached trough a case study of one of Rio de Janeiro’s informal settlements ‘favela’ Santa Marta. The favela’s public spaces have been studied in order to reveal how Rio’s search for increased global status has affected the management of the spaces and consequently the favela dwellers. Rio de Janeiro is using a well-acknowledged strategy towards global competitiveness, the hosting of international mega-events. Within the near future the city is presenting two of the world’s most well-known events: the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games. The games are being used as a tool to attract tourists and foreign investments, which are expected to help the city to Compete Globally. However, our findings show that this is happening at the expense of the city’s vulnerable slum dwellers and that Rio to some extent is Losing Locally. For example, slum areas that can contribute to presenting Rio as an attractive city, or have an unexploited economic potential, are increasingly integrated to the formal city. The residents of these areas are affected in several ways, for example through being evicted on behalf of more economically beneficial establishments. Remote slums with no interest for investments are however still separated from the formal city and left without support for its residents. Trough our research we have found that when a city set out to be globally competitive, it uses neoliberal market strategies, like hosting mega-events, since that is apprehended as the only trajectory towards development. Although, we suggest that the known strategy for development should be revised in order to not violate human rights.

Future paths for regional fare collection in Atlanta: a case study analysis of the planning and implementation of next generation fare collection systems for regional transit in North AmericaAnders, Joel D. 13 November 2012 (has links)
The Atlanta region will soon be faced with a choice as to how it will go about planning for and implementing its next regional fare collection system that will replace the current BREEZE system. In 2006, MARTA became the first transit agency in the United States to implement an all contactless smartcard for use on its services. However, there have been many advances in new technologies and the consumer payment preferences have evolved since the initial implementation. These developments, coupled with the rapid consumer adoption of smartphones and changing attitudes within the financial payments industry towards transit properties, have recently led four major transit agencies within North America to implement new fare collection systems based on open payments, the development of mobile ticketing applications, or a combination. This research uses a case study methodology to answer several questions related to the planning and implementation of regional fare collection systems in Chicago (CTA), Dallas (DART), Philadelphia (SEPTA) and Toronto (TTC). Based on the experience of the case study agencies, the implementation of Atlanta's next fare collection system is sure to be a long and arduous process. However, by utilizing the lessons learned from DART, CTA, SEPTA and TTC, MARTA and the other regional operators (Cobb Community Transit, Gwinnett County Transit and the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority) will be better poised to provide their patrons with additional means of paying fares while, at the same, minimizing the disruption to the existing fare collection system during the transition period.

Identifying active water flow paths in a tropical wetland with radar remote sensing data (wetland interferometry) : The case of the Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta, ColombiaGuittard, Alice January 2016 (has links)
Despite being one of the most productive ecosystems on earth, wetland areas have been heavily affected by human activities. The Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta (CGSM) in Colombia is one of these wetlands, where the inadequate construction of roads modified the hydrology and connectivity of this water body, generating massive mangrove mortality episodes. The lack of knowledge on the hydrological processes and connectivity of the CGSM has impaired mangrove restoration plans. Here we use wetland interferometry technique to remotely monitor the wetland and understand the flow of water in/out and across the CGSM wetland complex. A close collaboration with Miami University allowed us to access CGSM’s interferograms created with ALOS Palsar satellite data (from 2007 until 2011). The interferograms resulting from the analysis were correlated with daily hydrological data (precipitation, runoff in the main inflow of freshwater to the wetland, tide charts) to finally identify two main paths of inflow of water that are still active and are continuously feeding freshwater into the Cienaga. The most persistent was identified in the south-west part of the CGSM; a water flow coming directly from the Magdalena River and entering the main lagoon in its south-west corner. The second was located in the north-west area, where most of the mangroves have died. In this case, different interferograms showed different potential water flow paths depending on the season (dry / wet season), the Magdalena River’s discharge and the rainfall. These results reflect the complex hydrology of the CGSM . Furthermore, a coherence analysis was conducted to assess the quality of the remote sensing data and to better understand the different responses of the features within the Cienaga. The results showed that the coherence analysis could also be potentially used to identify areas of dead mangrove. This study confirms that despite the blockage of the connectivity of the wetlands, there are still important freshwater flow paths feeding the CGSM. Additional hydrological studies are needed to ensure the further understanding of the hydrology of the CGSM and confirm the results of this study.

Abstract: This thesis presents an analysis of the plays of Luigi Pirandello in the final ten years of his life (1926-1936), especially the dramas written for actress Marta Abba, consistent with the state-of-art research on the playwright. Our starting point was the verification that, thanks to the actress, the two halves of Pirandellian feminine imagination - the holy mother and the prostitute ¿ came to cohabitate in the same female image, that of the virtuous vamp: an erotically enchanted creature, although sexually unattainable. Reviewing the current criticism, we verified that the writer's late production is the result of a violent interaction and mutual influence between biographic stimulus and artistic concerns. On this basis, we reconstruct, via the chronicle and theatrical criticism of the period, the performer Marta Abba's style and her definition as the Pirandellian actress par excellence. Having as foundation the theoretical propositions of the so-called New Theater, its relationships to the utopianism of the early avant-gardes, and opposing the correspondence between Pirandello and Abba with his own theatrical productions, we believe that the presence of anautobiographical perspective in the last period of Pirandello's theatre is justified. When writing for the actress, the playwright certainly had the interpretation of his inspiring muse in mind, the exceptionally talented Marta Abba as the co-author of the new feminine profile developed by the author. On the other hand, by individualizing in Marta Abba all the female creatures, the playwright sees himself under a sign of predestination: Marta's attractive power over the Master, "his art's daughter", recovers an old phantom, the taboo-theme of Pirandello writing: the incestuous, fatherly fascination. Thus, Pirandello creates an ambiguous feminine profile, related to the major movies icons of the '30s - Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich - pluralistic enough to assimilate theever-changing, contradictory style of the interpreter Marta Abba, translating and incorporating, at the same time, his own inner torment. / Doutorado / Literatura e Outras Produções Culturais / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária

Previous issue date: 2013-09-27 / The dissertation wich the reader has in its hands concerns my master dissertation about
the contemplation in the Cloud of Unknowing. The Cloud of Unknowing belongs to the late
medieval period (XIV century), and was probably written by a cartusian monk, as a method of
teaching a young man, probably around twenty-four years old, about the contemplative life. In
his writing, the author compares the contemplative life to two important biblical figures. First
he compares it to Mary, that having received Jesus in her house, listens to him patiently,
unlike Martha, her sister, that goes about preparing his supper. Next the author compares
contemplative life, to Moses, wich with a lot of effort, climbs to the top of the mountain and
sees a great cloud.
Mary´s passage reports to the gospel according to Luque chapter 10, verse 38-42.
Moses passage belongs to the book of Exodus, chapter 24. Mary is compared to her sister
Martha. The first one represents the contemplative life, while the second one represents an
active life. Moses is compared to Aaron, the last one representing a person wich with little
effort and by divine grace contemplates the lord, while the first one is only capable of the
same with a lot of effort. We approach the degrees of ascension to the contemplative life: the
purgative path; the progressive and the contemplative one. The first degree refers to the active
life while the second one refers to the active and contemplative lifes. In its turn the third level
relates only to the contemplative life. The active life, being the path lived according the works
of mercy and charity, as well as contemplation. Is the search of the spirit becoming closer to
do medievo tardio (séc.
preparar-lhe a refeição.
contraposto a Aarão.
amoroso

Addressing climate change adaptation through transit asset management: a case study of MARTACrane, Matthew 03 April 2013 (has links)
This thesis conducts a case study of how MARTA could address climate change adaptation through its transit asset management program. Two climate-modeling approaches are utilized to project potential future climate scenarios within MARTA's service area to identify significant climate stressors. These climate stressors are used to help identify vulnerable assets, operations, and locations in the MARTA system through several interviews conducted with key MARTA staff. The results of this basic climate vulnerability assessment are used to develop a series of short-term and long-term adaptation strategies that address these vulnerabilities. Next, a framework is proposed for addressing climate adaptation through MARTA's existing asset management program. Finally, the thesis proposes a general framework that other transit agencies could utilize to address climate adaptation through their asset management programs.
The results of the climate vulnerability assessment indicate that the MARTA service area is likely to experience longer exposure to higher temperatures, flooding, wider variations in temperature, droughts, and more frequent high-wind events. Of these stressors, the MARTA system is most vulnerable to the effects of extreme and prolonged heat as well as flooding caused by intense precipitation events. Adaptation strategies to address these vulnerabilities include more frequent inspection of HVAC systems on buses and rail vehicles, increasing pumping capacity at underground rail stations, and incorporating low-impact developments into surrounded station areas.
The limitations of the results of this case study and areas for further research from these limitations are also presented.
