Effects of a Modified Judo Program on Psychosocial Factors in Typically Developing and Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: a Mixed-Methods Study

Tomey, Keanu L. 01 January 2017 (has links)
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a modified judo training program on psychosocial health in both typically developing (TD) and children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) using a mixed-methods approach. METHODS: The sample consisted of 5 children with ASD and 5 TD children (age=8-11yrs) who participated in 10 sessions of a modified judo program during their typical physical education time for school. Psychosocial factors (enjoyment, perceived competence, benefits of PA) were assessed at baseline and post intervention, with completion of all measures dependent upon the level of comfort expressed by the participant. At the end of the program, children took part in focus group discussions centered around their experience with the program, while key school staff participated in semi-structured interviews based on their observations of the program. All focus group discussions and interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. RESULTS: Quantitative results for pre and post psychosocial measures showed no significant differences existed between PA self-efficacy (p=.99), PA enjoyment (p=.6), and barriers to PA (p=.27). Qualitative results revealed that the majority of the participants found the program to be enjoyable, with partner centered activities being particularly fun. Suggestions for improvement included increasing the duration and frequency of the judo classes. All children reported a desire to continue participating in the judo classes. Findings from staff interviews indicated that school staff observed improvements in psychosocial health and behavior both immediately following a judo class, and throughout the intervention period. Increased self-confidence was mentioned by all participating school staff members. CONCLUSION: Despite the lack of significant quantitative findings, psychosocial benefits were observed in both TD children and children with ASD, with all participants reporting their desire to continue with the program. Future studies should examine the psychosocial benefits in a judo-training program in larger sample of children over longer durations.

Dejian mind-body intervention: effects on mood and physical health. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

January 2008 (has links)
Background. A sizable amount of individuals in the community are presented with various kinds of physical and mental health problems which are either undetected, untreated or inadequately treated, due to the limitations on the availability and accessibility of the services in the existing health care system, or to other social and personal reasons. The current study evaluated the effectiveness of a newly developed modality of health-enhancing treatment---the Mindfulness-based Dejian Mind-Body Intervention, as compared to that of a Group Psychoeducational Treatment, in alleviating depressive mood and improving physical health of adult individuals in the community. / Conclusions. Findings of the current study suggest that compared with the Group Psychoeducational Treatment, Dejian Mind-Body Intervention might be more effective in enhancing the emotional and physical health of community individuals presented with moderate to severe depressive mood and/or problems with bowel functioning. / Method. Forty adult volunteers with various degree of depressive mood and physical problems who expressed interest in receiving either Dejian Mind-Body Intervention or Group Psychoeducational Treatment were recruited in the current study. They were matched for gender, age, education and level of depression, and were randomly assigned to either treatment group. / Results. Both the Dejian Mind-Body Intervention and Group Psychoeducation Treatment were effective in bringing about a significant reduction in depressive mood iv among treatment completers. However, differential effectiveness emerged among those presented with moderate to severe depressive mood, where Dejian Mind-Body Intervention resulted in significantly greater treatment-related reduction in depressive mood compared with the Group Psychoeducational Treatment. Besides, Dejian Mind-Body Intervention brought about significant increase in an objective QEEG measure of positive affect, and improvements in physical health (i.e., bowel functioning) that were not evidenced in the Group Psychoeducation Treatment. / Tsui, Jin Ching. / Adviser: Agnes S.Y. The prevalence of and risk factors associated with musculoskeletal injuries in mixed martial arts athletes in the greater Durban area

Jack, Duncan Alexander January 2016 (has links)
Submitted in partial compliance with the requirements for a Master’s Degree in Technology, Department of Chiropractic and Somatology, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2016. / Background: Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a contact sport that has grown in popularity worldwide. MMA has been shown to be an activity that generates a high volume of injuries in its participants, especially when subjected to particular factors that are known to carry high risk in contact sports. Limited research has been conducted concerning the risk for injury development in MMA, with no South African statistics being produced to date. This study aims to bridge this gap. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of and risk factors associated with musculoskeletal injuries in Mixed Martial Arts athletes in the greater Durban area of KwaZulu-Natal. Method: This study was a prospective, quantitative survey that sampled 105 MMA athletes from 16 accredited gyms in the greater Durban area. The information captured from the questionnaires enabled compilation of a fighter profile, training profile and injury profile assessing injuries present at the time of data collection and a history of injuries over a 12 month period. Data was analysed with SPSS version 23.0. Inferential techniques included the use of correlations and chi square test values, displayed as p-values and Eta scores. Relationships were considered significant with a p-value of <0.05 and an effect size of >0.23. Results: A 91% response rate was achieved with 83.3% male and 16.2% female participation. Overall, the most commonly injured areas were the upper extremity (36.5%), followed by the lower extremity (34.3%), spine (14.2%), head (8.6%) and trunk (6.5%) regions. In terms of single areas, the most common injuries were to the shoulder (30.9%), knee (29.2%) and elbow (14.4%). The most common injury types were joint sprains (31.1%), muscle strains (20.7%) and ligament tears (18.6%). The most common injury mechanisms were being struck (16.1%), falling (15.7%) and striking an opponent (13.6%). Participants were unsure of the mechanism of their injuries in 7.5% of the injury reports. The number of days missed from training due to injury ranged from zero to 270 days of incapacitation. Risk factors for injury were significant for favoring the dominant hand while fighting (p = 0.011), flexibility training/ stretching (p = 0.019), ground arm-bars (p = 0.014), ground strangles (p = 0.028), groundwork holds/pins (p = 0.028), falling (p = 0.006), increased age (η = 0,619) and increased body weight (η = 0.706). Participation in CrossFit as an additional sport/ conditioning program was a protective factor against injuries (p = 0.007). Conclusion and recommendations: Favouring one side, falling, stretching, arm-bars, strangles, pins and increasing weight are some of the largely modifiable risk factors that play an important role in the development of injuries in MMA athletes. Coaches and their athletes will benefit from adapting training strategies to reduce injury rates from over-exposure to activities that present a high risk of injury as well as by furthering the extent of exposure to conditioning. / M

A roda de capoeira e seus ecos ancestrais e contemporâneos / The capoeira circle and its ancestral and contemporary echoes

Santos, Valdenor Silva dos 04 October 2016 (has links)
The objective of this project was to research on how the history of an ancient practice, such as capoeira, was registered. In spite of having originated at the slave quarters in the colonial period, the capoeira has not yet seen its social recognition. . Due to the gaps within such registration, we have interviewed some capoeira masters with extensive experience in the transmission of its culture aiming at rebuilding, the capoeira contributions to the upbringing of generations of African descendant youngsters. Although the Federal Laws 10.639/03 and 11.645/08 which recognizes the historical, cultural and political importance of capoeira, and considers it crucial for the formation of new generations, foreseeing its implementation in schools, its practice still faces obstacles in this scope. Therefore, we propose as part of the research, experiences of shared teaching of capoeira at FEUSP\'S Application School, seeking to contribute to the teachers\' formation for the teaching of history and Afro-Brazilian and African culture. The concept of recognition - in the subjective, legal and cultural perspectives, defended by Axel Honneth, as well as the reconstruction of the history of capoeira in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Bahia. It as part of the enslaved resistance in Brazil, were essential to interpret the critical content of the lyrics and the symbolic meaning of the game of capoeira and its rituals. They also contributed to the recognition of a widespread Afro-Brazilian culture on practically all the continents.

Martial Arts as a markup language

Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis describes the modeling of Martial Arts as a markup language. Up until now Martial Arts has already been documented in books, videos, tradition and other methods. Though to represent Martial Arts knowledge consistently and uniformly in a digital era, we introduce the Martial Arts Markup Language (MAML), which is based on XML. Because XML provides a standardized, serializable and portable format, MAML also enables sharing among students, teachers and their peers across different platforms, media and networks. MAML provides the ability, with appropriate XML tools, to document a Martial Arts style in a structured way. To achieve this, we first analyze the aspects that comprise Martial Arts; and how its states and processes relate to one another. We model in MAML describing the stances, transitions, punches, blocks, techniques, combinations, reactions and patterns used in Martial Arts. We discuss the implementation of MAML by observing and extracting the definable aspects in existing Martial Art Instructive Documents. The MAML Schema assures that the details of a Martial Arts Style’s elements are consistent. Current simulation efforts will be explained as well as areas for future development. We have described Martial Arts by observing what has already been done and creating a structured standard to document them. We hope to enable practitioners’ abilities to learn from and develop their arts by providing a resource in which they can interact with. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

The research, qualitative, is a methodological procedure, the method of image analysis stops with the decomposition of videos of fights, opting for the following comparative process of movement: a) Comparison of motion aikijujutsu (School Shinobi no Jutsu Hiten Ryu) with the traditional aikido video (Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba, grandson of the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba), 2) Comparison of movement of jujutsu (the school of Shinobi no Jutsu Ryu Hiten) in Judo (video education institution Kodokan). We made a reflection on the perception of the Eastern world in the social sciences of the West. Edward Said (2007) questioned the forms of appropriation, interpretation, understanding and judging the Eastern culture from the perspective of Western rationality, it called the author of Orientalism. The theoretical model we chose the comprehensive sociology of Max Weber and his contribution to the analysis of religious phenomena (Buddhism and Shinto) and added the psychosocial theory of German sociologist Erich Fromm, who realizes the authoritarian character of state and institutions social (like religion) acting in shaping the character of the subjects. We apply these concepts in authors and their analysis of religiosity and their settings in the Japanese state. Complementary to this analysis, we reflect on the development of sociological studies of bodily practices using figurative analysis of Norbert Elias and Eric Dunning (1992) on the modern sports phenomenon born in Europe and the Japanese martial arts.

Measuring cognitive load management in a traditional martial arts training model

Maier, Herbert N. 29 August 2005 (has links)
A training method utilized in a few martial arts was found to agree strongly with current cognitive psychology theory. Further study extracted a procedural model for learning a complex set of whole-body, dyadic motor skills involving high-speed, interactive, continuous situation assessment and decision making. A broader literature survey found relevance in several fields of research, supporting the definition of four performance dimensions in the activity. Data collected from one experienced student partnering with each of ten students of various experience levels was analyzed on these four dimensions. These dimensions were found sufficient to show both individual differences and changes across an instructional intervention. Strong correlations found under linear regression were supportive of anecdotal evidence from the model??s long empirical history in training. Data provided evidence of a self-organizing dynamic emerging from the interaction of a dyad participating in this activity, and of individual differences in cognitive resource management dynamically setting allocation priorities among specific aspects of a complex motor/cognitive activity. Highly individual responses demonstrate a mechanism for insight into students that are difficult to read. Numerous comparisons and contrasts show interactivity of performance dimensions. Impact is foreseen for research, training and testing in motor learning fields, as well as situation awareness, decision making and military tactical training. Further research is recommended to replicate these findings, test hypotheses derived from them, and to extend testing of the drill-network model into other fields of learning.
