[en] RESONANCES FROM AN ART OF THE FIST: AN ETHNOGRAPHY ON LEARNING CHEN SHI TAIJIQUAN IN THE CHINESE DIASPORA IN SÃO PAULO (BRAZIL) / [pt] RESSONÂNCIAS DE UMA ARTE DO PUNHO: UMA ETNOGRAFIA DA APRENDIZAGEM DE CHEN SHI TAIJIQUAN NA DIÁSPORA CHINESA DA CIDADE DE SÃO PAULO (BRASIL)

GABRIEL GUARINO S L DE ALMEIDA 27 April 2023 (has links)
[en] The thesis presents the apprenticeship of a Chinese Martial Arts in the Chenjiagou Brasil School of Taijiquan, located in the Santa Cecília neighborhood (São Paulo/SP). Fieldwork was undertaken between 2020-2022 and dwells on the notion of performance ethnography, as it investigates, from the position of the apprentice, the community of practice centered on the figure of Gil Rodrigues–the school s teacher, founder, and director. Results are presented in an ethnography of on learning Chen Shi Taijiquan (Chen Family Tai Chi Chuan). Departing from the theories of Jean Lave, Tim Ingold, and Gregory Bateson, the thesis explores the analysis of the social organization of technique in its modes of distribution of access to activities conceptualized in context as taijiquan and Chinese culture. To introduce the kung fu world of São Paulo city from the 90s to the present day, I develop an ethnobiographic perspective to present the reception and spread of Chinese Martial Arts in Brasil through Gil s personal pursuit of taijiquan. I argue that his experience of Martial Arts–one that is shared in his school and in the Shaosheng Oriental Cultural Centre–may be conceived as a contiguous activity to the Chinese diaspora in the capital of São Paulo. Using concepts of Yuk Hui, François Jullien, Anne Cheng, and Stephan Feuchtwang, I go back to Mauss techniques of the body and civilization to analyze the concept of Chinese culture, connecting it to the anthropological debate about culture, aesthetics, and ontology. In conclusion, I suggest that this apprentice of taijiquan moves towards the genesis of an apprentice whose action relies upon the maintenance of principles and fundamentals–understood both as virtues in their social lives and as patterns expressed in their movements, in a knowledge and wisdom path characteristic of the Chinese cosmotechnics.

The Role Taijiquan in Supporting Adaptive Development in Adulthood

Komelski, Matthew F. 03 May 2010 (has links)
Purpose: Working from lifespan development theory and the theory of Selective Optimization with Compensation (SOC), I provide theoretical analyses to inform and direct research on Taijiquan where research questions involve issues of adaptive development (optimization of gains, maintenance of function, and prevention of lost resources). I also used these frameworks to construct a biopsychosocial mind-body practices model that seeks to explain and predict the role of key aspects (curriculum, practice, context) in Taiji-related development. The above frameworks are further substantiated through a comparative analysis of health status between Taijiquan practitioners (N =120; age range = 24-83, M = 54.77) and a nationally representative sample (N = 414,629; age range = 18-99, M = 54.86) collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The model's predictive potential is explored through an analysis of health status within a subset of experienced Taiji practitioners (N = 94; age range = 24-83, M = 55.82). Design: Theoretical and cross-sectional; between- and within-group comparisons. Methods: Responses from a convenience sample of Taiji practitioners were collected using an online survey. The instrument was designed to collect data on health-related quality of life (HRQoL), lifestyle variables, and Taiji practice regimens. Data from Taiji practitioners were merged with the CDC's 2008 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) dataset, forming three groups: no exercise, some exercise, and Taiji exercise. Health status was regressed on exercise group while controlling for age, income, and education, as well as the interaction between age and exercise group. Further analyses were also conducted on a subset of the Taiji data (N=94). These analyses examined the relationships among self-reported health, practice regimens, and diet while controlling for age and experience. Results: In the first set of analyses (see paper one), I controlled for the effects of age, income, education, and the differential effects of age on exercise group, while determining associations between health and group membership. A significant interaction effect (p < 0.001) occurred between age and exercise group membership. This interaction showed little difference between exercise groups in the young adult age range, but among older adults, Taijiquan practitioners displayed the best HRQoL. In the second set of analyses (see paper 2), I found significant interaction effects between (a) curricular complexity and out-of-class practice (p < 0.05) and (b) curricular complexity and diet (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The extraordinary health status trajectory among Taiji practitioners may be attributable to several conditions including: (a) the implied presence of SOC-related strategies, (b) the general benefits of psychophysical expertise, and (c) concomitant structure between Taiji-related goals and health behaviors that contributes to optimal aging. Specifically, intervention designers, Taiji teachers, and practitioners should consider the potential benefits of well rounded Taiji curricula, regular out-of-class practice, and healthy diet for optimizing health-related gains and minimizing losses typically associated with aging. / Ph. L'histoire vivante médiévale. Approche socio-anthropologique. / Medieval living history. Socio-anthropological approach

Tuaillon Demésy, Audrey 23 November 2011 (has links)
Living history is a way to investigate the past which differs according to the time period under consideration. The one which is considered in this work is the Middle-Ages. Two distinct but complementary activities are introduced : historical reenactment and HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts). The study uses a cross-disciplinary method, with ethnological and sociological elements. The fieldwork presents participant observation, interviews and questionnaires in a qualitative and quantitative approach. My working hypothesis consists in questioning cultural activity as a means to build up identity. Three points can be developed : the first one displays dissemination of knowledges (cultural modalities, heritage, memory and transmission) related to living history. Then, the research focuses on the link between spare time and occupation. Life organization, expansion of professionalism, tourism and the concept of fair are investigated. The last point refers to the social dimension that creates links among participants. This way, the work presents the sociological profile of the actors, the notion of community, that of the representation of activities which leads to specifics norms and rules. The goal is to understand identity demarcations of a particular group. The connection between alterity, norms and rules allows or releases the social link. The limited recognition of living history conduces to approaches concerning games of identity, fruitful for the analysis of a contemporary practice, which is actually growing in France.

Ett företag i det socialt oacceptabla / A company in the socially unacceptable

NIMANI, GEZIM, PERSSON, JOAKIM January 2011 (has links)

A memória das lutas ou o lugar do "DO": as artes marciais e a construção de um caminho oriental para a cultura corporal na cidade de São Paulo / The memory of the struggles or the place of DO: the martial arts and the construction of an oriental way for the corporal culture in the city of São Paulo

His practice is available as an opportunity to experience. In other words, anyone that desire easily can have access to those corporal practices originated at countries of the far east. But how that was possible? How an element of so different culture is able to be established in São Paulo? To try to answer those questions that, I wrote this work. Accordingly, this research was based on oral sources, bibliographic and documentary to investigate the process of introduction and spread of some of the most popular eastern martial arts practiced today in the city of São Paulo. Specifically on oral sources, I chose a strategy that focused masters immigrants from three countries: Japan, China (Hong Kong) and South Korea. The justification for such strategy resides in the fact of that are those the countries where originated some of the most popular eastern martial arts, currently practiced in the city of São Paulo. For analysis of the statements, were observed the annotations of Alessandro Portelli (1997), for whom the oral reports It is a document of present, in its shared responsibility by both the deponent as the researcher . As a result, it was observed that the introduction of oriental martial arts in most due to the migration of peoples of oriental origin, started in the early years of the twentieth century, and that the success in the work of dissemination of such practices should be the process of modernization, the perspective advocated by Norbert Elias (1994), to which they were submitted. This modernization is expressed in the adoption in their home countries and also in the receiving country, in Brazil, the labor standards of some body of European origin, with emphasis, accordingly, for the sport and gymnastics and also the methods by "control the potential violence" inherent in such practices. It was also noted that the period after World War II, more specifically in the 1960s and 1970s, represented a new moment in the dissemination of such practices in the city. Process that until then had been promoted by the exclusive work of the masters immigrants and that from that moment on, begin to benefit from the emergence of a breeding ground for these practices arise from increased visibility in the city, a phenomenon generated by the diffusion mass products of the entertainment industry relating to eastern martial arts. Finally, there was the role of a phenomenon that began for some of these practices even in the final years of the nineteenth century, in their home countries, but currently still in progress, making it a sport. Accordingly, with the help of the studies conducted by Pierre Bourdieu (1990, 1983) and Norbert Elias (1994, 1992), it was found that the unfolding of this process have been the responsible for a clash between the traditions of martial arts and oriental desires of those who are supporters of the process of modernization, Westernization and spotivization of these practices. Such situation has acted in the sense of become possible the association of the martial arts in a variety of ways. Senses that in some way seek satiate the desires of the actors involved in the life of martial arts, are the work of dissemination of the practice and are in its consumption / Atualmente as artes marciais orientais são um elemento constitutivo da cultura corporal da cidade de São Paulo.

Interventioner av kampsport påverkar livskvalitet & kognitiv förmåga hos äldre vuxna : En systematisk litteraturstudie / Intervention based martial arts affect quality of life and cognitive ability among older adults : A systematic review

Leroy, Hugo January 2019 (has links)
Background: Older people are faced with special physical and mental health challenges associated with ageing. Over 20% of adults aged 60 and over suffer from a mental or neurological disorder. It is known, and has been shown in previous studies, that physical activity can enhance physical and mental health. Meditative martial arts such as Tai Chi are, in most cases, low-intensity mind-body exercises that involve very graceful movements, which are performed in a slow, rhythmical, and well-controlled manner. This makes the practice suitable for older adults. Study aim: To investigate and assess the impact of different types of martial arts on mental health, health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and wellbeing among older adults, who are healthy or suffer from a mild cognitive impairment. Methods: This study focused on experimental studies with interventions of martial arts on older adults. Nine original articles gathered from Web of Science (n=1) and PubMed (n=8) were reviewed, compared and summarized. Keywords used were; “martial arts” AND “mental health” in both databases respectively. Results: The practice of martial arts is associated with positive results of both physical and mental health aspects. Tai Chi can lead to improvements of mental ability, health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and improve the physical ability of older adults. Conclusion: Martial arts as a means of intervention may be beneficial for the wellbeing and overall quality of life in older adults and should be recommended. However, nine original articles are not sufficient for stating the significance of martial arts on mental health among older adults. Further research is therefore required.

Formatting and Change in East Asian Television Industries: Media Globalization and Regional Dynamics

Lim, Wei Ling Tania Patricia January 2005 (has links)
Television is increasingly both global and local. Those television industries discussed in this thesis transact in an extensive neo-network of flows in talents, financing, and the latest forms of popular culture. These cities attempt to become media capitals but their status waxes and wanes, depending on their success in exporting their Asian media productions. What do marital arts dramas, interactive game-shows, children's animation and teenage idol soap operas from East Asian television industries have in common? Through the systematic use of TV formatting strategies, these television genres have become the focus for indigenous cultural entrepreneurs located in the East Asian cities of Hong Kong, Singapore and Taipei to turn their local TV programmes into tradable culture. This thesis is a re-consideration of the impact of media globalisation on Asian television that re-imagines a new global media order. It suggests that there is a growing shift in perception and trade among once-peripheral television industries that they may be slowly de-centring Hollywood's dominance by inserting East Asian popular entertainment into familiar formats or cultural spaces through embracing global yet local cultures of production. While TV formats like Survivor, Millionaire, Big Brother and American Idol have become profitable and powerful franchises globally, in East Asia, the size of TV format trade is actually eclipsed by the regional trade in East Asian popular cultural commodities from martial arts novels and films, manga and romantic fiction, to popular music. These commodities have become the source of remaking local television culture into tradable cultures as local TV programmes use formatting practices to circulate within their region. The many faces of formatting in television are explored through four case studies - from Hong Kong (TVB's Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre), Singapore (Robert Chua Productions' Everyone Wins, Peach Blossom Media's Tomato Twins) and Taipei (Comic Ritz Production's Meteor Garden). Conceptualised as Asian media productions, these TV programmes are sites for examining individual agency, the network flows of popular culture and structural changes of their respective broadcasting fields. This thesis argues that TV formatting practices can become a currency for neo-networked media producers to create a medium of cultural exchange that sets up the possibility for a common market for cultural trade in East Asia. However, the ease with which TV formatting practices and re-sale of TV programmes are copied lower barriers for competition and often this tends toward over production. Over-exposure kills many new genres of production and discourages investment in the research and development component of creating TV formats for trade. Change in East Asian television industries is also aided by media conglomeration, global access through satellite TV, the Internet and increasingly digital entertainment, media de-regulation and pro-development policies. A number of factors and conditions that accompany the rise of TV formatting in East Asia (such as the role of independents vis-a-vis big local players, the emergence of copyright issues and marketing celebrities) contribute to the innovations that result from adapting formatting practices to local contexts, and suggest how each city's television industry attempts to address the rise of tradable cultural commodities that are increasingly made for pan-Asian consumption.

La communauté villageoise de Litang, et ses transmissions généalogiques et rituelles dans la construction de la modernité chinoise (du XIXe siècle à nos jours) / The village community of Litang, and its genealogical and ritual transmissions in the building of Modern China (from the 19th century to nowadays)

Favraud, Georges 24 January 2013 (has links)
How does a local Chinese community, structured on the basis of both patrilineal and Daoist transmissions, participate in the building of “modernity”? This dissertation describes the way in which these two fundamental communal social structures are articulatedwith respect to each other, and the way in which they transform themselves in order to adapt to, and participate in, the social changes of their time. This monographic work also proposes, on a larger scale, an anthropological analysis of the society and history of the Xiang basin and Hunan province: from Confucian and patrilineal cults to agnatic kinship, as well as from ancient ritual, martial and medical Daoist traditions (Chunyang and Quanzhen), to their actual rearrangements in the “Chinese market socialism”, after having undergonethe first Communist peasant movements (1927) lead by Mao Zedong in his native region, and the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). The study of the contemporary mutations of the Chen lineage of Litang - an institution at the center of local power struggles, the hierarchization of sexual roles, and the village economy and ecology – leads us to reassert the very basison which Chinese parenthood groups elaborate themselves today. The analysisof the changes and the intermixturebetween parenthood and rituals, whichtake place in the local sanctuary of Increasing Transformations (Zenghua Guan) – an institution in charge of the local ritual life – shows that cult communitiesare one of the more fluid and sustainable structures of Chinese society.
