FROM JUDITH TO DORIGEN: THE FEMININE EMBODIMENT OF VIOLENCE IN MEDIEVAL ENGLISH LITERATURE

<p dir="ltr">When one thinks of the medieval past, one might think of knights with their shining armor and swords; these are warriors. My dissertation seeks to examine and expose how “warriors” are gendered as masculine; a person or character categorized as a warrior might be assumed to be a man unless otherwise specified to be a “woman warrior.” The need for the qualifying adjective (“woman” or “female”) illustrates that the maleness of warriorhood and violence is understood as implicit. This governing assumption affects how women’s actions, particularly women’s violent actions, are interpreted. This dissertation takes women’s violence as a starting point, examining characters from Judith to Chaucer’s Dido. I show how and why the violence these women enact cannot be relegated to, say, maternal instinct or spirituality. The spiritual warrior is herself impressive, of course; she is a tool, a weapon of God, through whom God fights. The idea of the spiritual warrior then allows for discussions of women without painting them as inherently violent or aggressive. Instead, the spiritual warrior is the martyr, an extension of maternal instincts and the idea that women are caretakers and, when necessary, protectors. But these self-sacrificial ideals, often associated with maternity, are not, nor should they be, a requirement for womanhood.</p><p dir="ltr">I argue that in order to create a capacious enough definition of “woman” and even femininity, we must prize definitions of femininity from the grip of the patriarchy. What if we took these women on their own terms, instead? I seek to do exactly this: to examine, throughout this dissertation, both the ways that violent women act and what they say, without considering how their behavior might, nonetheless, be understood to conform to limiting ideas of femininity (such as the virgin or the whore). I thereby invite us to think about what it means when violent women enact their will on the world; and I also attend to the physical, in addition to the spiritual, effects of this violence (like killing someone). My work suggests that, in order to take gender seriously, we must pay attention to these moments when women hurt or kill either someone else or themselves.</p>

The role and position of women in Roman North African society

In this thesis I have endeavoured to throw light on both the private and public aspect of the lives of women living in the Roman African provinces from the first century BC to the seventh century AD. Funerary inscriptions reveal that the role of women in private life was projected in a manner which reflected the ideals for Roman womanhood (pudicitia, castitas,fides and fecunditas), even when they clearly came of Afro-Punic stock. In terms of the quality of their lives Roman African women of the propertied status groups (about whom we know the most) had a good standard of living compared to other parts of the Roman Empire, and for example were well-educated in the urbanized areas compared to provinces such as Gaul. Roman African women of the elite also enjoyed a degree of autonomy enhanced by the increased financial independence granted to them in terms of Roman law, which enabled them to function as benefactors in their communities in the same way as their male counterparts, donating money for temples, baths and markets. In return for this they were duly recognized in honorary inscriptions by their communities. Although this public role may appear to be in conflict with the 'ideal' domestic or private role of the Roman matron, this activity was sanctioned by the fact that they were acting in the interests of male family members who were engaged in municipal careers. In the 2nd and 3rd centuries there are a few signs that women were beginning to act more in their own interests, but much of their public role faded with the increasing dominance of the Christian Church which prescribed a more limited role for women. The only exceptions occurred in the times of persecution through the temporary prominence gained by women as martyrs and confessors, although this prominence cannot be said to have advantaged women in general. During the Vandal and Byzantine period we know of only a few women, primarily those with connections to the elite at Rome and Constantinople, who acted with the independence and authority of their class. / D.Litt. et Phil. La presente ricerca si concentra sul gruppo dei santi martiri nell’affresco del Giudizio Universale dipinto da Michelangelo Buonarroti per la parete d’altare della Cappella Sistina. Il gruppo riveste un ruolo importante nella composizione sia per quanto concerne l’inedita iconografia e rilevanza nel contesto dell’Ultimo Giudizio sia per ciò che riguarda i significati dell’affresco. La presente indagine si propone attraverso una ricostruzione della committenza papale dell’opera, divisa tra Clemente VII e Paolo III, di contestualizzare la presenza dei martiri nell’iconografia del Giudizio ponendola a confronto con la tradizione figurativa precedente e relazionando, infine, il tema del martirio ai protagonisti di questa commissione, nel più ampio quadro della Chiesa del XVI secolo. / This research focuses on the martyrs’ group depicted by Michelangelo Buonarroti in the Sistine Chapel’s Last Judgment. This group has an important role in the composition thanks to its new iconography in the Last Judgment subject and to its significance in the meaning of the fresco. This thesis, reconsidering the papal patronage of pope Clement VII and Paul III, wants to underline martyrs’ role in Last Judgment iconography, comparing it with the previous figurative tradition and to relate the theme of martyrdom with the protagonists of this artistic commission into the wider context of sixteenth century Church.

We have studied how, and if, the theme of feminism appears in the official documents of both programs, and whether the presence of this theme in these documents is due to the existence or not of a movement - or organization - of women in the country with the vanguard character, as Marta Harnecker conceptualizes. The concepts of gender, patriarchy and sexual division of labor, coined by authors such as Heleieth Saffioti, Carole Pateman, Iris Young, Danièle Kergoat, among others, were the theoretical basis of the present study. The research was conducted through documentary analysis. We studied official documents (political-pedagogical project, booklets, among others) of the two programs and analyzed a) if the subject of gender relations appeared; b) whether this appearance reinforced or questioned patriarchal gender relations; c) how it appeared, whether directly, indirectly, and in what context. We were able to conclude that the Nicaraguan documents have a greater presence of the theme, and that this is due to a more organized and centralized women's movement that, unlike the São Paulo movement - then fragmented and with a predominantly institutionalized activism - directly influenced alphabetization in the country. We do not affirm this, however, without reservations, since in both programs feminism appears as a very specific "subject", which reveals a difficulty in dealing with the theme of feminism transversally and even a theoretical difficulty in relation to it / O presente trabalho analisa dois programas de alfabetização que ocorreram na América Latina: A Cruzada Nacional de Alfabetização “Heróis e Mártires pela Libertação da Nicarágua” (CNA), realizada em 1980 na Nicarágua, e o Movimento de Alfabetização de Jovens e Adultos de São Paulo (MOVA-SP), realizado entre os anos de 1989 e 1992, em São Paulo, ambos organizado com base nas ideias de Paulo Freire, contando inclusive com sua participação direta. Estudamos como, e se, o tema do feminismo aparece nos documentos oficiais de ambos os programas, e se a presença ou não deste tema em ditos documentos deve-se à existência ou não de um movimento - ou uma organização - de mulheres no país com o caráter de vanguarda, como conceitua Marta Harnecker. Tivemos como base teórica do presente trabalho os conceitos de gênero, patriarcado e divisão sexual do trabalho, cunhados, respectivamente, por autoras como Heleieth Saffioti, Carole Pateman, Iris Young, Danièle Kergoat, entre outras. A pesquisa foi realizada por meio da análise documental. Estudamos documentos oficiais (projeto político-pedagógico, cartilhas, entre outros) dos dois programas, e analisamos a) se o tema das relações de gênero aparecia; b) se essa aparição reforçava ou questionava as relações patriarcais de gênero; c) como ele aparecia, se de forma direta, indireta, e em que contexto. Pudemos concluir que os documentos nicaraguenses têm uma presença maior do tema, e que isso se deve a um movimento de mulheres mais organizado e centralizado que, ao contrário do movimento paulistano - então fragmentado e com uma atuação majoritariamente institucionalizada -, influenciou diretamente a alfabetização no país. Não afirmamos isso, no entanto, sem ressalvas, uma vez que em ambos os programas o feminismo aparece como um “tema” bem específico, o que revela uma dificuldade de transversalização do feminismo e mesmo uma dificuldade teórica com relação a ele

El objetivo de esta aproximación al fenómeno de la mozarabización-arabización de las gentes desplazadas desde Al-Ándalus o ubicadas y desplazadas en territorios de la amplia Gallaecia y fronteras, es poder ver su huella, seguir su rastro allá donde se localice cualquier fenómeno de tradición latino-romance y andalusí. Los datos de contexto de la Ylliqiyya son claves más allá de la Galiza nuclear, en las fronteras (Marcas Inferior, Al-Tagr al garbi y Central, cabeza y discurso del Duero) e interior, y así nuestras fuentes documentales monásticas seleccionadas (tumbos de Sobrado, Samos, Celanova y Castañeda sanabrés) son capaces de enfocar onomástica-antroponimia, léxico, objetos de extracción comercial y litúrgicos, toponimia-hagiotoponimia, y esos nuevos caminos de investigación que atisbamos en los siglos VIII al XI. / The objective of this approach to the phenomenon of the mozarabization-arabicization of the people moved from Al-Ándalus or located and moved in territories of the ample Gallaecia and borders, is to be able to see its track, to follow its sign there where any phenomenon of Latin-Romance and andalusí tradition is located. The data of context of the Ylliqiyya are keys beyond the nuclear Galiza, in the borders (Marks Inferior, Al-Tagr al Garbi and Power station, head and route of the Duero) and interior, and thus our selected monastic documentary sources (tumbles of Sobrado, Samos, Celanova and Castañeda) are able to focus onomastic-anthroponymy, lexicon, objects of commercial extraction and liturgical, toponymy-hagiotoponymy, and those new ways of investigation that we watched in centuries VIII to the XI.
