A comparison between the effects of black tea and rooibos on the iron status of primary school children / Petronella Breet

Breet, Petronella January 2003 (has links)
Background: Clinical studies have shown that tea consumption leads to decreased iron absorption. This finding is however, not supported by epidemiological studies, where no relationship between an increased tea consumption and a lower iron status in a population at risk of iron depletion has been found. Objectives: The main aim of this study was to compare the effects of black tea and Rooibos consumption on the iron status of primary school children in a rural setting in Potchefstroom, South Africa. Methods: One hundred and seventy five children, aged six to fifteen years, participated in this single blind, randomised, parallel intervention trial. Subjects were randomly allocated to receive two 200ml servings of either black tea or Rooibos with milk and sugar. These beverages were consumed during breaks and at the same time as the food h m the school-feeding scheme. The trial proceeded for sixteen weeks. The children received antihelminthic treatment (500mg mebendazole) at baseline. Haemoglobii haematocrit, serum iron, ferritin and transferfin were measured and total iron binding capacity and transferrin saturation were calculated. Trained fieldworkers measured dietary intakes by means of 24-hour dietary recalls and anthropometrists took anthropometric measurements. All the above mentioned data were gathered at the beginning and at the end of the intervention period. Results: Measurements indicated a study population that is malnourished in terms of anthropometrical indices and nutrient intakes. Biochemical markers of iron status also indicated that the population could be at risk of iron depletion. Changes in red blood cell count, haemoglobin, haematocrit, mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), serum iron, transferrin, transferrin saturation, ferritin and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) did not differ significantly between the two groups. Mean red blood cell count, haematocrit, MCV, transferrin and TIBC increased significantly h m baseline to end in both groups (all p<0.0001) and MCH decreased significantly (p<.0001). Mean haemoglobin increased significantly with black tea consumption (p=0.002), although not with the consumption of Rooibos (p=0.073). Conclusion: Black tea or Rooibos consumption has similar effects on the iron status of primary school children. Iron status was not compromised by black tea in comparison with Rooibos. This questions the proposed limitation of black tea consumption as a public health strategy in order to combat iron deficiency in a population with marginal iron status. / Thesis (M.Sc. Comparative study of established test methods for aggregate strength and durability of Archean rocks from Botswana

Jessica, Stålheim January 2014 (has links)
ABSTRACT Comparative study of established test methods for aggregate strength and durabilityof Archean rocks from Botswana In the current situation, river sand is used for building of roads and as raw material forconcrete in Botswana. River sand is a finite resource and important to preserve as itacts as natural water purification, groundwater aquifer and protection against soil erosion.Mining of bedrock may be a good alternative to replace the river sand with crushed rock(aggregates) in concrete and as road materials. The main purpose of this thesis was to determine if the rock grain size can be usedas a parameter to indicate durability and rock strength. It was also of interest to find outif the grain size correlates with established technical analysis and strength test methods. This knowledge can be used as a prospecting tool when searching for new quarry sites inthe future. In this master’s thesis, rock samples from the Gaborone granite complex have beenanalysed to examine how established test methods and the mineral grain size correspondswith the rock strength. By comparing technical properties (Los Angeles (LA) value ,aggregate crushing value (ACV), aggregate impact value (AIV) and 10 percent fines aggregatecrushing test (10 % FACT)) with quantitative analysis (mineral grain size andmineral grain size distribution), it is possible to determine the mineral grain size correspondenceto rock strength. Generally the result show that more fine-grained granitesshow better technical properties than more coarse-grained granites. The calculated meangrain size show weak negative correlation to ACV value, and a positive correlation to LA-, AIV- and 10 % FACT values. Best correlation can be seen between mean grain size andLA values (R2= 0.61) and AIV values (R2= 0.58). Low mean grain size tend to give bettertechnical properties in form of lower LA- and AIV values. The cumulative distributioncurve show that a high concentration of very fine material or fine material tend to contributeto a lower LA value. The results indicate that equigranular rocks with low meangrain size contributes to good technical properties, but when it comes to uneven grainedrock more factors must be taken into account to estimate technical properties.

Hedging no modelo com processo de Poisson composto / Hedging in compound Poisson process model

Victor Sae Hon Sung 07 December 2015 (has links)
The investor, that negotiate assets, is subject to economic risks of any negotiation because there is no certainty regarding the appreciation or depreciation of an asset. Here comes the futures market, where contracts can be negotiated in order to protect (hedge) the risk of excessive losses or gains, making the purchase or sale assets, fair for both sides. The goal of this work consist in study Lévy pure-jump process with finite activity, also known as compound Poisson process, and its applications. Discovered by the French mathematician Paul Pierre Lévy, the Lévy processes admits jumps in paths, which is often observed in financial markets. We will define a hedging strategy for a market model with compound Poisson process using mean-variance hedging and dynamic programming.

Learning-based methods for resource allocation and interference management in energy-efficient small cell networks

Samarakoon, S. (Sumudu) 07 November 2017 (has links)
Abstract Resource allocation and interference management in wireless small cell networks have been areas of key research interest in the past few years. Although a large number of research studies have been carried out, the needs for high capacity, reliability, and energy efficiency in the emerging fifth-generation (5G) networks warrants the development of methodologies focusing on ultra-dense and self-organizing small cell network (SCN) scenarios. In this regard, the prime motivation of this thesis is to propose an array of distributed methodologies to solve the problem of joint resource allocation and interference management in SCNs pertaining to different network architectures. The present dissertation proposes and investigates distributed control mechanisms for wireless SCNs mainly in three cases: a backhaul-aware interference management mechanism of the uplink of wireless SCNs, a dynamic cluster-based approach for maximizing the energy efficiency of dense wireless SCNs, and a joint power control and user scheduling mechanism for optimizing energy efficiency in ultra-dense SCNs. Optimizing SCNs, especially in the ultra-dense regime, is extremely challenging due to the severe coupling in interference and the dynamics of both queues and channel states. Moreover, due to the lack of inter-base station/cluster communications, smart distributed learning mechanisms are required to autonomously choose optimal transmission strategies based on local information. To overcome these challenges, an array of distributed algorithms are developed by combining the tools from machine learning, Lyapunov optimization and mean-field theory. For each of the above proposals, extensive sets of simulations have been carried out to validate the performance of the proposed methods compared to conventional models that fail to account for the limitations due to network scale, dynamics of queue and channel states, backhaul heterogeneity and capacity constraints, and the lack of coordination between network elements. The results of the proposed methods yield significant gains of the proposed methods in terms of energy savings, rate improvements, and delay reductions compared to the conventional models studied in the existing literature. (SCN). Tämän väitöskirjan tärkein tavoite onkin esittää joukko hajautettuja menetelmiä piensoluverkkojen yhteisten resurssien allokointiin ja häiriön hallintaan, kun käytössä on erilaisia verkkoarkkitehtuureja. Tässä väitöskirjassa ehdotetaan ja tutkitaan hajautettuja menetelmiä langattomien piensoluverkkojen hallintaan kolmessa eri tilanteessa: välityskanavan huomioiva häiriönhallinta menetelmä langattomissa piensoluverkoissa, dynaamisiin klustereihin perustuva malli tiheiden langattomien piensoluverkkojen energiatehokkuuden maksimointiin ja yhteinen tehonsäädön ja käyttäjien allokaatio menetelmä ultratiheiden piensoluverkkojen energiatehokkuuden optimointiin. Ultratiheiden piensoluverkkojen optimointi on erittäin haastavaa häiriön sekä jonojen ja kanavatilojen vahvojen kytkösten vuoksi. Lisäksi, koska klustereilla/tukiasemilla ei ole kommunikaatiota, tarvitaan hajautettuja oppimisalgoritmeja, jotta saadaan itsenäisesti valittua optimaaliset lähetys menetelmät hyödyntäen vain paikallista tietoa. Tämän vuoksi kehitetään useita hajautettuja algoritmeja, jotka hyödyntävät koneoppimista, Lyapunov optimointia ja mean-field teoriaa. Kaikki yllä olevat esitetyt menetelmät on validoitu laajoilla simulaatioilla, joilla on voitu todentaa niiden suorituskyky perinteisiin malleihin verrattuna. Perinteiset mallit eivät pysty ottamaan huomioon verkon laajuuden, jonon ja kanavatilojen dynamiikan, eri välityskanavien ja rajallisen kapasiteetin asettamia rajoituksia sekä verkon elementtien välisen koordinoinnin puuttumista. Esitetyt menetelmät tuottavat huomattavia parannuksia energiansäästöön, siirtonopeuteen ja viiveiden vähentämiseen verrattuna perinteisiin malleihin, joita kirjallisuudessa on tarkasteltu.

Fundamentação eletromiográfica do método de pré-exaustão no treinamento de força / Electromyography as a basis to pre-exhaustion method in strength training

Allan Brennecke Leite 03 April 2007 (has links)
The aim of this study was, through EMG, to inquire into temporal and activation intensity parameters of pectoralis major (PM), deltoid (DA) and triceps brachii (TB) muscles, which can be used as a basis to bench press and flying 10RM pre-exhaustion method application. It was compared two experimental protocols: P1) pre-exhaustion method; P2) traditional recommendation. The activation intensity, as well its relationship with the muscular contraction duration, established on intensity levels, did not attain significant differences to PM. To DA, there were not differences between the protocols respecting the activation intensity when whole the repetitions were analyzed. However, when each repetition was analyzed, this muscle exhibited significant increasing in activation intensity in P1; as well it showed a more intense solicitation of 80 to 100% MVIC level. To TB, the activation intensity was significant greater in P1 than P2 respecting whole manners to data analysis. The results exhibited that the locomotor apparatus increased the TB dependence as an alternative strategy to try to attain bench press 10RM in P1. Therefore, it is possible to assert that pre-exhaustion method may be efficient to impose largest neural stimuli on small synergists muscular groups during movement execution, but not on the main target muscular group. However, these findings sustain that the pre-exhaustion method effects cannot receive a categorical affirmation, yet. Because, contrariwise the P2, during the P1 bench press set there was not significant increasing in the same muscle activation intensity, as well in the intensity levels. This way, it is possible to assert that, in P1 the muscles began the set in a highest intensity levels than in P2, because they were stimulated previously

Portföljoptimering med courtageavgifter / Portfolio optimization with brokerage fees

Fan, Kevin, Larsson, Rasmus January 2014 (has links)
Ever since it was first introduced in an article in the Journal of Finance 1952, Harry Markowitz’ mean - variance model for portfolio selection has become one of the best known models in finance. The model was one of the first in the world to deal with portfolio optimization mathematically and have directly or indirectly inspired the rest of the world to develop new portfolio optimization methods. Although the model is one of the greatest contributions to modern portfolio theory, critics claim that it may have practical difficulties. Partly because the Markowitz model is based on various assumptions which do not necessarily coincide with the reality. The assumptions which are based on the financial markets and investor behavior contain the simplification that there are no transaction costs associated with financial trading. However, in reality, all financial products are subject to transaction costs such as brokerage fees and taxes. To determine whether this simplification leads to inaccurate results or not, we derive an extension of the mean-variance optimization model which includes brokerage fees occurred under the construction of an investment portfolio. We then compare our extension of the Markowitz model, including transaction costs, with the standard model. The results indicate that brokerage fees have a negligible effect on the standard model if the investor's budget is relatively large. Hence the assumption that no brokerage fees occur when trading financial securities seems to be an acceptable simplification if the budget is relatively high. Finally, we suggest that brokerage fees are negligible if the creation of the portfolio and hence the transactions only occurs once. However if an investor is active and rebalances his portfolio often, the brokerage fees could be of great importance.

Bitcoins roll i en Investeringsportfölj : A Mean-Variance Analysis of the Diversification Benefits / The Role of Bitcoin in an Investment Portfolio : A Mean-Variance Analysis of the Diversification Benefits

Nyqvist, Vidar, Milic, Mario January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to explore the role of bitcoin in an investment portfolio. The paper examines the nature of bitcoin and additionally how bitcoin compares to gold when included in an investment portfolio. This report uses the historical value of bitcoin and investigates with a Mean-Variance model how the risk-adjusted return of an optimized portfolio is affected when bitcoin is a constituent. By comparing Sharpe Ratios from the optimized portfolios, a conclusion can be drawn as to whether bitcoin affects the maximum Sharpe ratio or the global minimum variance point. Our study suggests that including bitcoin in an investment portfolio increases the risk-adjusted return of the portfolio. In addition, portfolios optimized with bitcoin outperform the market. Further, we conclude that bitcoin has a relatively high correlation as compared to gold with the assets in the study. Hence, bitcoin is not the new gold.
