Terapeutické hrdinství: zjednávání posttraumatické stresové poruchy u válečných veteránů v Bosně a Hercegovině / Therapeutic Heroism: Enacting Posttraumatic Stress Disorder among War Veterans in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Based on longitudinal ethnographic fieldwork in Bosnia and Herzegovina I trace ontologies of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and their enactments among veterans of the 1992-1995 war. My aim is to problematize and rethink social constructionists' approaches in medical anthropology that discuss war trauma and PTSD in relation to naturalistic models and treat them as constructed realities not determined by the nature of things. I argue that such a standpoint produces a particular epistemological/ontological side-effect: it allows medical anthropologists to craft a purely social ontology of trauma and PTSD by claiming that the realness of these "constructs" is a result of psychiatric discourse, moral economy of contemporary societies or Western (intellectual, political, and medical) hegemony. Considering the ontology of PTSD as an empirical question I analyze the enactments of PTSD in four settings: the ethnographic genre itself, the organization of war veterans with PTSD in the city of Tuzla, the veterans' welfare system in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Bosnian public arena. Collaboration between traditional healers and nurse practitioners in primary health care in Maseru Health Service Area - Lesotho

The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the existing relationship between traditional healers and nurse practitioners in Maseru Health Service Area in Lesotho and also to determine why people consult traditional healers. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to investigate the relationship between traditional healers and nurse practitioners and also to determine why people utilize the services of traditional healers. The study was limited to Maseru Health Service Area in Lesotho. Data was collected from twenty-seven (27) nurses from nineteen (19) clinics and from thirty (30) traditional healers from the same health service area. Data from traditional healers was collected using semi-structured interviews while nurse practitioners were given a questionnaire to complete. The study revealed that there was no formal relationship between traditional healers and nurse practitioners. Support for traditional healers was revealed to be limited, for example, only four (14.8%) nurses had a programme for traditional healers while twenty ( 66.7%) traditional healers did not have any contact with nurse practitioners. Involvement of traditional healers in primary health care at grassroots level has therefore been very minimal. The reasons why people utilize traditional healers were found to be as follows: • When people think they have been bewitched. • Traditional healers can tell the actual cause of disease • Failure of modern practice • For social problems According to the study, both traditional healers and nurse practitioners felt that collaboration between traditional healers and nurse practitioners was essential because it would enable planned referral of patients from one group to another where necessary; it would also facilitate exchange of ideas and knowledge for the benefit of the people served. Use of the Athrixia phylicoides plant in Tshwane: an anthropological study

This study focuses on the use of the Athrixia phylicoides plant in Tshwane, Gauteng, South Africa. The plant is used within the domestic domain as a beverage, for medicinal purposes, as well as for the manufacturing of domestic brooms. The aim of the study was to investigate the use and market of Athrixia phylicoides in two of the Tshwane markets, namely; Denneboom and Marabastad. Case study design, participant observation and interviews were employed to collect data. A literature review was conducted to construct a theoretical framework. The study reveals that traditional healers, broom makers and customers have a remarkable knowledge about Athrixia phylicoides, which has been untapped thus far. In addition, the study indicates that possible extinction of the Athrixia phylicoides plant, due to over-harvesting and lack of conservation, will pose a challenge to the market. / Anthropology / M.A. (Anthropology)

Virtual reality and the clinic: an ethnographic study of the Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (The CAREN Research Study)

At the Ottawa Hospital in Ontario, Canada, clinicians use full body immersion virtual reality to treat a variety of health conditions, including: traumatic brain injuries, post- traumatic stress disorder, acquired brain injuries, complex regional pain syndrome, spinal cord injuries, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and lower limb amputations. The system is shared between military and civilian patient populations. Viewed by clinicians and the system’s designers as a value neutral medical technology, clinical virtual reality’s sights, sounds, movements, and smells reveal cultural assumptions about universal patient experiences. In this dissertation I draw from reflexive feminist research methodologies, visual anthropology and sensory ethnography in a hospital to centre the body in current debates about digital accessibility in the 21st Century. 40 in-depth interviews with practitioners and patients, 210 clinical observations, and film and photography ground research participant experiences in day-to-day understandings of virtual reality at the hospital. In this dissertation I address an ongoing absence of the body as a site of analytical attention in anthropological studies of virtual reality. While much literature in the social sciences situates virtual reality as a ‘post-human’ technology, I argue that virtual reality treatments are always experienced, resisted and interpreted through diverse body schemata. Furthermore, virtual reality cannot be decoupled from the sensitivities, socialities and politics of particular bodies in particular places and times. The Ottawa Hospital’s Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN) system features a digitally enhanced walk-in chamber, treadmills on hydraulic pistons, surround sound audio, advanced graphics and user feedback utilizing force plates and a dynamic infrared motion capture system. The CAREN system utilizes hardware and software reliant on specific assumptions about human bodies. For example, these assumptions are echoed in depictions of race, gender, class, and indigeneity. Patients using virtual reality technologies can experience more than one disability or health condition at a time, further disrupting the idea of universal user experiences. As clinicians and patients confront the limitations of body normativity in the CAREN system’s interface design, they improvise, resist, and experience virtual reality in ways that defy design agendas, ultimately shaping patient treatments and unique paths to healing and health. / Graduate

The main objective for this research was to identify and evaluate the possible influence of Shangaan cultural beliefs, myths and behaviours, on the spread of HIV within the Mnisi tribe. A qualitative method of investigation was followed; interviews with three participants and observations of the Mnisi culture were used in the construction of the investigation and findings.
