Female petty crime in Dundee, 1865-1925 : alcohol, prostitution and recidivism in a Scottish city

Haider, Suki January 2013 (has links)
Late-nineteenth and early twentieth-century Dundee had a strikingly large female workforce and this fact has attracted much scholarly attention. But existing research has not probed the official crime records to determine whether the associated local stereotype of the disorderly mill worker, as a ‘moral blot' on the landscape, is justified. This study looks at female criminality in Dundee 1865–1925. It finds that drunkenness, breach of the peace and theft were the leading female offences and that the women most strongly associated with criminality belonged to the marginalised sections of the working class. Amongst them were the unskilled mill girls prominent in the contemporary discussions, but it was prostitutes and women of ‘No Trade' who appear to have challenged the police most often. They were frequently repeat offenders and consequently this thesis devotes considerable attention to the women entrenched in Dundee's criminal justice system. A pattern noted in the city's recidivism statistics, and often echoed elsewhere, is that the most persistent offenders were women. The fact that men perpetrated the majority of petty crime raises the suspicion that the police statistics capture differential policing of male and female recidivists – an idea that builds upon feminist theory and Howard Taylor's stance on judicial statistics. Yet a detailed study of the archives reveals that there are as many examples of the police treating women fairly as there are of gender-biased law. Indeed, several practical constraints hindered over-zealous policing, one of which was the tendency of the local magistrates to throw out cases against prostitutes and female drunks. This thesis, taking the police and court records as a whole, emphasizes that it was generally pragmatism, rather than prejudice, that guided the sanctioning of female recidivists in Dundee.

Dualities, Symmetries and Unbroken Phases in String Theory : Probing the Composite Nature of the String / Dualiteter, Symmetrier och Obrutna Faser i Strängteori : En Utforskning av Strängens Sammansatta Natur

Engquist, Johan January 2005 (has links)
The thesis treats aspects of string/M-theory in anti-de Sitter spacetimes and their supersymmetric completions. By applying the AdS/CFT correspondence, as well as models of spin chains and singletons, we try to attain a better understanding of the underlying symmetries and the unbroken phases of string/M-theory. Tensionless string/M-theory in anti-de Sitter spacetime is argued to imply a higher spin gauge symmetry enhancement and to be described by gauged sigma models of multi-singletons as well as by closed singleton strings. Vasiliev's weakly projected equations of symmetric massless higher spin gauge fields in the vector oscillator formulation is shown to follow from a deformation of the singleton model. Various four dimensional minimal as well as non-minimal supersymmetric higher spin gauge theories in the spinor formulation are examined. The minimal higher spin gauge theory based on the symmetry algebra hs(1|4) is elaborated on in an N=1 superspace, illustrating the remarkable fact that the choice of base manifold is not fixed in unfolded dynamics. The importance of the representations saturating the unitarity bounds in anti-de Sitter spacetime is stressed throughout the thesis, with particular emphasis on the singleton and the massless representations. Singletons, and hence massless states, are shown to appear as bound states on the string or p-brane and are localized at cusps. Furthermore, we examine semiclassical string solutions in Type IIB String Theory in AdS(5) x S(5) and their boundary duals in N=4 Super Yang-Mills Theory in d=4 which are constituted out of thermodynamic composite operators. By using integrable spin chain techniques and Bäcklund transformations in the field theory and in the string theory, respectively, the one-loop anomalous dimensions as well as the tower of conserved charges of the composite operators are shown to be in agreement with the energies and the tower of conserved charges associated with the dual string states.

Warren, Rhode Island : l'évolution d'une petite communauté canadienne-française établie en Nouvelle-Angleterre, 1895-1910

Bélisle, Marie 08 1900 (has links)
In the aftermath of the Civil War, the small manufacturing center of Warren, Rhode Island, attracted many French Canadians immigrants in search of work and economic betterment. They rapidly organized themselves by establishing a parish network, by founding several mutual aid societies and by multiplying shops that were ready to welcome more and more customers. The early stages of development of the community (1888-1895) have already been observed by Jean Lamarre in his Master’s thesis (1895). On one hand, the researcher noticed a gradual process of settlement occurring among the parishioners and, on the other hand, the analysis of their socio-economic profile indicated that most of them worked in the cotton mills. By this study, we wanted to revisit this community when its presence in Warren’s industrial and urban area seemed consolidated. Through a systematic use of the unpublished nominative lists from the 1910 Federal Census of the United States as well as published government documents, this thesis assesses the extent of socio-economic changes that have transformed the community over the course of fifteen years. The observation of the integration process of French Canadian into the industrial environment is supplemented by an analysis of women and children’s contribution into the household economy. The main conclusions of this study show that despite the fact that a significant proportion of workers are still employed in the manufacturing sector, the French Canadian population of Warren mainly enjoys a better quality of life in 1910 than in the earlier era. Their socio-economic situation places them closer to their Yankees and Irish neighbours than to their “new immigration” counterparts (Poles, Italians, Portuguese).

New Style in Sitcom : exploring genre terms of contemporary American comedy TV series through their utilization of documentary style

Sander, Johanna January 2014 (has links)
Through exploring the use of documentary style in a selection of contemporary American comedy series, this thesis closes in on the question whether texts that stylistically differ from traditional sitcom can still be regarded as part of the sitcom genre. The contemporary American TV series that are being analyzed are The Office, Arrested Development, Modern Family, Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Michael J. Fox Show. As the series’ place within sitcom becomes apparent, the analysis ultimately leads to a critical investigation of the term “comedy verite.” Questioning the concepts applicability for the American series and their development leads to the investigation of new definitions. This analysis of contemporary televisual styles reveals a myriad of deeper issues and elucidates how stylistic developments point towards broader developments of the TV medium – towards a medium more and more defined by, or even drenched in, “reality.”

Healing writes : restoring the authorial self through creative practice : and Birthright, a speculative fiction novel

Parv, Valerie January 2007 (has links)
Writing the speculative fiction novel, Birthright, and this accompanying exegesis, led me to challenge the validity of the disclaimer usually found in the front matter of most novels that the story is purely imaginary, bears no relationship to reality, with the characters not being inspired by anyone known or unknown to the author. For the first time in my career, I began to consider how writers including myself might frequently revisit themes and ideas which resonate with our lived experiences. I call this restorying, an unconscious process whereby aspects of one's life history are rewritten through one's creative work to achieve a more satisfactory result. Through personal contact, studying authors' accounts of their creative practices, and surveying current literature on narrative therapy, a case is made that, far from being generated purely from imagination, writers' creative choices are driven by an unconscious need to restory ourselves.

Data acquisition system for pilot mill

Molepo, Isaih Kgabe 04 1900 (has links)
This dissertation describes the development, design, implementation and evaluation of a data acquisition system, with the main aim of using it for data collection on a laboratory pilot ball mill. An open-source prototype hardware platform was utilised in the implementation of the data acquisition function, however, with limitations. An analogue signal conditioning card has been successfully developed to interface the analogue signals to the dual domain ADC module. Model-based software development was used to design and develop the algorithms to control the DAS acquisition process, but with limited capabilities. A GUI application has been developed and used for the collection and storage of the raw data on the host system. The DAS prototype was calibrated and collected data successfully through all the channels; however, the input signal bandwidth was limited to 2Hz. / Electrical and Mining Engineering / M. Tech. An integrated model of milling and flotation for the optimal recovery of sulphide ores at the Kansanshi mine

Lusambo, Martin 11 1900 (has links)
Kansanshi mine sulphide ore circuit did not achieve target flotation recovery in 2016, hence it was deemed necessary to carry out a research aimed at optimizing this circuit. The objective of the research was to optimise the Kansanshi milling and flotation circuit processing a copper sulphide ore. In line with this, samples were obtained around the circuit and processed in the laboratory for moisture content, slurry concentration, particle size distribution, and flotation response. This information was then used to build a computer-based model of the Kansanshi milling and flotation circuit. This was done in MODSIM®, a software package specialising in the design and simulation of mineral processing operations. After careful appraisal, appropriate models were selected for the semi autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mills, SAG mill discharge screen, hydrocyclones, pebble crusher, and the flotation cells. The calibrated model was then used to simulate the effects of key operating parameters on flotation recovery. Analysis using the attainable region technique revealed that the SAG mill feed-rate should be adjusted from 1719 tph to 2090 tph. This would lead to a better utilisation of the pebble crusher that can process 358 tph of pebbles from the current 198 tph. From the simulation work, it was established that rougher flotation recovery can be improved from the current 80.0 % to 82.3 %. The technoeconomic benefits of the proposition are yet to be investigated. Findings from the research concluded that the milling circuit optimum operating parameter; which generated a final product falling predominantly in the range - 150 +38 μm were SAG and ball mills conditions of ball sizes 200 and 40mm respectively, ball mill ball filling 32% and rotational speed between 75 and 80% for both SAG and ball mills. The optimum hydrocyclone feed slurry concentration was found to be 62% solids. Additionally, the SAG mill discharge screen aperture size of 6 mm was the optimum. It must be noted that slurry concentration did not show any impact on both the SAG and ball mills performance. The SAG mill ball filling did not show any significant improvement on performance. / College of Engineering, Science and Technology / M. Tech. (Chemical Engineering)

Rehabilitace historického jádra a přilehlého okolí města Kyjov se zaměřením na veřejný prostor / The Rehabilitation of the historical center and adjacent surroundings of Kyjov with a focus on the public space

Fojtíková, Martina January 2018 (has links)
This diploma thesis is focused on the rehabilitation of adjacent surroundings of the historical center of Kyjov and revitalizing public spaces. Part of the thesis are the analysis of the current condition of the solved and affected area, problems evaluation and values of the territory and draft of a new building structure along with a working transport solution. The main criterion for the choice of the area to be solved for me was the problem of this locality with conjunction to industry area of the mills and a very small percentage of the quality of the territory. The mill site occupies almost a quarter of the area and together with surrounding buildings, makes a large impassable barrier in the city. The draft seeks to respond to the functioning state of the site and to rehabilitate the surrounding environment. Another factor for the selection of the territory was the unused potential of the river side Kyjovka flowing through the area. This area hides many other problems and there is no quality architecture. My task was to combine all aspects of the area and make the most of it for the draft. A new functional neighborhood of housing with public spaces and amenities is being designed on the area. The draft include 2 new streets, 4 public spaces, pedestrian zone, Kyjovka riverside, 45 new buildings and 10 reconstructed buildings. The concept of the area also concerns the transfer of the existing main railway station. The draft is also aimed on the main problem of Kyjov, as a growing age population, the poor quality of services and commuting to work.
