Angélica Giovanini Micheletti Lessa 30 October 2007 (has links)
The musical analysis of the Missa Ferial Osvaldo Lacerda is the objective of this study. This mass was written between the months of February and March of 1966 and was intended for a mixed chorus(SATB) which was to be sung, a capella, on the common days of the liturgical calendar of the Roman Catholic Church. The Missa Ferial was composed at the time when the composer was an acting member of the National Commission of Sacred Music. It is the first of his four masses that represent the union of Brazilian cultural elements with sacred Catholic music, in accordance with the resolutions of the Vatican Council II. The first chapter of this dissertation analyzes the frequent aspects of the mass in relation to: the melody, the counterpoint between voices, and the harmonic element in each of the parts that makes up the overall structure of the mass. The second chapter deals with aspects dealing with timbre as well as the graduation of sonorous intensity throughout the piece. The third chapter of this study analyzes the aspect of rhythm and the application of these rhythms within the compositions construction in its whole. By means of an analytical dissection of the Missa Ferial, the fourth chapter presents interpretative annotations for the possibility of a performance of this work. The analysis of each of these elements that are embodied within the structure of this composition, was made possible by the application of the guidelines developed by Marco Antonio da Silva Ramos through the utilization of his documented study on musical analysis, as well as the study of the documentation referring to sacred music according to the Vatican Council II, and principally the documents from the National Commission of Sacred Music. It must be mentioned as well, in reference to the study of the composition, an interview made with the composer himself(of which can be encountered in the appendix of this study). In order to better understand the rhythmic constancies of Brazilian music, a collection of data was taken and analyzed from the research of Villa-Lobos. This study may hopefully provide groundwork for new interpretive perspectives.

Música, religião e morte: recorrências tópicas na missa de réquiem em Mi bemol maior de Marcos Portugal / Music, Religion and Death: Topical recurrences in Marcos Portugal Requiem Mass in E flat major.

Ágata Yozhiyoka Almeida 02 December 2016 (has links)
The transition of the international musicology context in the late twentieth-century has made it possible for the development of Topic Theory to find a breeding ground for the analysis about musical discourse expressivity and signification. While its main object of research is based on works from eighteenth and nineteenth-century composers, musical topics have been used as analysis tools in musical works from several Brazilian music periods. Nevertheless, very little has been researched about its influences in Luso-Brazilian colonial musical works. Similarly, it is known that the religious works of Marcos Portugal, a relevant composer of the Royal House during the reign of the Regent Prince D. João VI, also requires further attention as far as musicological investigations are concerned. Thus, given these two shortcomings, the aim of this study is to look for topical recurrences in Marcos Portugal Requiem Mass in E flat major. The funeral context in which Requiem Masses are composed makes the occurrence of semantic and symbolic games between music, religion and death, possible. In this way, we have noticed how funeral march, ombra and tempesta topics are employed in Marcos Portugal Requiem and how these topics contribute to the construction of expressivity and common feelings before death: awe of the eternal damnation and hope of salvation.

Missa chrismatis a její proměny ve dvacátém století: Porovnání změn v liturgii a v teologii / Missa chrismatis and Its Changes in the Twentieth Century: A Comparison of Changes in Liturgy and Theology

Němec, Pavel January 2014 (has links)
Missa chrismatis and Its Changes in the Twentieth Century: A Comparison of Changes in Liturgy and Theology. Missa Chrismatis (Chrism Mass) is a Mass that the bishop celebrates in the Holy Week, together with his priests, which is a sign of mutual unity. During this Mass, the priests renew their priestly vows and the bishop consecrates the oil of catechumens, the oil of the sick and the chrism oil. The ceremony underwent several changes over the past century. These are reflected also in the theology, expressed in the liturgy by emphasizing of certain elements. The major reforms of the liturgy of the Mass took place in several stages in the 50`s, 60`s and 70`s of the 20th century. First, the thesis follows the basics and reasons for the use of oils in the liturgy of the Catholic Church in the context of Easter and then the historical development of the Mass, in which the oils are consecrated. Also it clearly compares the progress of the Missa chrismatis liturgy and captures differences in the liturgical texts and texts of the rite of benediction of oils in the various phases of the reform of the twentieth century. On this basis, it attempts to render the evolution in theological content. Keywords Missa Chrismatis, Benediction of Holy Oils, Chrism, The Holy Week, Maundy Thursday, Liturgical Reform.

Analýza vybraných sborových skladeb Jakuba Jana Ryby / Analysis of Jan Ryba's Selected Musical Works for Choir

Křivková, Ludmila January 2015 (has links)
This diploma thesis called "The analysis of selected choral compositions by Jakub Jan Ryba" deals primarily with his religious works. The introductory chapter briefly describes Ryba's journey to music and the activity of a composer and the text is also based on Ryba's own biography published in 2005 titled My Life and Music. The thesis concerns an extant autographic list of his works dated to 1801 and an autographic fragment of an incipit catalogue of compositions dated from 1774 to 1796 including an incipit of Czech Christmas Mass "Hey, Master!" dated back to 1795. Both lists were compared with two electronic music databases: the catalogue of the department of music history, National Museum - the Czech Museum of Music and the musical incipit catalogue of the National Library of the Czech Republic. The electronic databases were further compared with the thematic catalogue which is a part of the monography titled Jakub Jan Ryba published in 1963. The object of interest was also the quantity of autographs and transcripts and the prints of the works by Jakub Jan Ryba which have been issued from the beginning of the 19th century till present. Regarding the results of the research, it was proved that only a part of Ryba's work has survived up till now since Ryba himself presents 1083 compositions, both...

Música Sacra, Discurso e Poder: Modelos Pré-Composicionais na Missa Luso-Brasileira / -

Christovam, Ozorio Bimbato Pereira 16 April 2018 (has links)
Eighteenth-century composers applied processes of copying and manipulation of precompositional models with the intention of effecting the musical discourse in the process of musical communication. Among these available models, rhetoric and partimento participated as fundamental tools in the discoursive structuring and resolution of music. The thesis presented here aims to demonstrate how, through these pre-compositional models, sacred music reproduced or altered power relations in the Luso-Brasilian space. The justification for this perspective is based on the observations made by Lusophone musicology on the problems arising from the accomodation of the Enlightenment ideal in a markedly Catholic environment, characterized by the Enlightened absolutism, which resulted in the struggles of power between the public spheres, State and Church. In this sense, the appointment of the chapel master was a decisive factor for the formation of zones of ideological influences and maintenance of power relations, since it was this social actor who produced the sacred musical discourse. The methodology used was based on the application of Critical Discourse Analysis in music, exposing how the manipulation of the pre-compositional models, observed at the level of musical text, was aligned and represented social structures at a contextual level. The analysis of the musical corpus centered on the Eight Voices and Instruments Mass, Five Voice Mass and Mass in C by André da Silva Gomes, focusing especially on the Kyrie for being the first part of the ordinary.

Skladby Jana Nepomuka Vocta (1777-1843) ve sbírce hudebnin z katedrály sv. Mikuláše v Českých Budějovicích, studie a edice / The Compositions of Jan Nepomuk Vocet (1777-1843) in the Collection from the St. Nicolaus Cathedral in České Budějovice, a Study and Edition

ŽIŽKOVÁ, Lenka January 2019 (has links)
A collection of music created mainly in the second half of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century was found at the choir loft of the Cathedral of St Nicholas in Budweis. Jáchym Štěpánovský and J. N. Vocet were two local composers and choir administrators who primarily helped to create this music collection. Jan Nepomuk Vocet who used to work at the choir of St Nicholas Cathedral was a significant person. He belongs to a lesser - known group of composers at the turn of the period of Classicism and Romanticism and that's why I chose him as the main topic of my diploma theses. The aim of this work is to evaluate Vocet's influence in Budweis music scene, to give an idea of his church music, popularize the chosen pieces of his music in edition and analyse it in detail.

Seven Movements from "Missa Festiva" (1817) of Marcos Portugal (1762–1830): A Vocal Score with Critical Commentary

Brites Pereira David Coelho, Júlia 05 1900 (has links)
Marcos António da Fonseca Portugal (1762–1830) is considered by several Luso-Brazilian musicologists to be the most prolific and influential Portuguese composer in history, having impacted the Portuguese and Brazilian music scene significantly during his lifetime. Marcos Portugal achieved international fame for his large-scale works, which include sacred compositions, Italian opera seria, as well as farsas and opera buffa in Portuguese. Despite the reputation he achieved during his lifetime, today his works are understudied and underperformed, even in Lusophone countries. Such an oversight is noticeable particularly as regards his sacred music corpus. For this reason, I have chosen Missa Festiva (1817) as the subject of this dissertation. Creating a vocal score of the solo, duo and trio movements of Missa Festiva will be helpful not only for performers, but also for scholars and conductors who wish study this work. A vocal score makes accessible the performance of individual movements when only piano, organ, or another keyboard instrument is available. By facilitating the performance and analysis of Missa Festiva, this document will contribute to the work's dissemination and to a better understanding of the value of early nineteenth-century Luso-Brazilian virtuosic vocal sacred music. The manuscript used for the transcription and orchestral reduction into a vocal score of movements III-IX is BR-Rcm MS CRI-SM59 from the Acervo Musical do Cabido Metropolitano do Rio de Janeiro, from 1818 (images included in the dissertation).
