The Rhetoric of Newspaper Rivalry in the Face of Image Restoration and Transformation

Christensen, Andrea Ludlow 06 July 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis is a study of the rhetoric of newspaper rivalry, particularly under the pressures of image restoration and transformation. I use methods of critical discourse analysis to look at newspaper articles in Utah's two dominant newspapers, the Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret Morning News. I compare a sample of news articles from each paper in 2002 to a sample in 2003, when the Tribune was working to restore its image after a scandal involving two of its reporters, and the News was working to transform its image as it transitioned from an afternoon newspaper to a morning newspaper. Using rhetorical categories previously developed, as well as categories I developed myself, I counted the appearances of different types of rivalry rhetoric in the news articles from each year. I found that while certain categories of rhetoric fell from 2002 to 2003, other categories increased drastically. In general, the categories in the 2003 sample were much more polarized than in the 2002 sample. The most striking differences were in the categories of accusation, defense, and gloating. The News' use of accusatory rhetoric and the Tribune's use of defensive rhetoric increased considerably from 2002 to 2003. The News' use of gloating rhetoric increased largely from 2002 to 2003, whereas the Tribune's decreased significantly during the same time period. Much of these changes are attributed to the pressures of image restoration and transformation.

Dallas Morning News Editorial Cartoonists: Influences of John Knott on Jack "Herc" Ficklen and William McClanahan

Darden, Robert F. 08 1900 (has links)
This problem's investigation deals with gauging the artistic influence, if any, pioneer editorial cartoonist John Knott had on his successors, Ficklen and McClanahan. Information was gathered through interviews and the pages of the Dallas Morning News. Organization is as follows: introduction, biography and art of Knott, biography and art of Ficklen, biography and art of McClanahan, summary and conclusion. The study found minimal artistic influence by Knott on the cartoons of Ficklen and McClanahan. Compared to Knott, Ficklen and McClanahan had different art backgrounds, cartoon styles, personal and political beliefs. Knott's successors admired different artists, drew during a different editorial page emphasis and had more freedom in cartoon selection than Knott did. Neither Ficklen nor McClanahan listed Knott as an artistic influence.

The Struggling Dance: The Latino Journalist Experience Covering Hispanic and Latino Communities in Dallas

Limón, Elvia 05 1900 (has links)
This qualitative study addresses how the Dallas Morning News and Al Día reporters and editors determine what type of news related to the Dallas Latino and Hispanic communities gets covered. It also looks into how and why each newspaper tackles the coverage of these communities. Through a systematic analysis of 8 in-depth interviews and a 6-month ethnography, the findings of this study suggest that Latino and Hispanic journalists in Dallas feel the Latino and Hispanic communities are regarded as the "other." This study suggests the newsroom's hegemony and its news production routines influence the way Latino and Hispanic communities are covered in Dallas, and the way Latino and Hispanic reporters and editors who primarily cover these communities are treated. Though the newsrooms have made an effort to diversity its staff, reporters and editors claim they still have a long way to go before the staff accurately represents the large Hispanic and Latino population in the city.

The Dallas Morning News' View Towards International Relations

Bradley, James E. 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to determine, if possible, North Central Texas views or attitudes toward international relations. These attitudes will be compared to studies on Southern attitudes to determine any similarities or dissimilarities. Literature on Southwestern attitudes is sparse; therefore, all data will be compared with that compiled by political scientists on Southern attitudes.

An Analysis of the Dallas Morning News Used Car Advertisements of Twenty Automobile Dealers for the Month of April

Evans, Ralph L. 08 1900 (has links)
"It is the purpose of this study to determine the type of appeal, the size and cost, the plan of insertions, and the extent superlatives are used in The Dallas Morning News used car advertisements of twenty automobile dealers during the month of April. Fourteen advertising appeals were used by the twenty automobile dealers advertising in The Dallas Morning News in the month of April. The fourteen appeals used were: efficiency, friendliness, style, curiosity, safety, convenience-comfort, economy reliability-reputation, durability-dependability, social distinction, fear-caution, ambition, pleasure, and family affection. The economy was the one most used appeal by the dealer. As shown in Table 12, the number of advertising appeals used corresponds or exceeds very little the total number of advertising insertions. Excepting one case, the dealers place the largest advertisements in the Sunday paper. The general procedure was that of placing large advertisements in the Sunday paper and smaller ones throughout the week. The total cost for the twenty automobile dealers was $6,452.08. The total advertising cost per dealer ranged from $38.20 to $1613.81. Only nine of the twenty dealers used superlatives in advertising during the month of April. The nine dealers used nine different superlatives for a total of 281 times."--leaves 1 and 35.

Hur menar du då? : En jämförande studie om kvinnors och mäns intervjuteknik i Gomorron Sverige

Brorström, Mathilda, Berg, Caroline January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to compare the interviewing techniques of male and female TV- hosts in the morning show Gomorron Sverige. Since the 1830s the interview has developed into one of the most important tool in today’s journalism. This essay is based on theories that focus on how you achieve a successful interview using different techniques. In addition, theories on the influence of gender in journalism are discussed with an emphasis on the male and female dichotomy. We have chosen to use a qualitative method of interview analysis, where we have constructed questions based on the theories, which were thereafter posed to our material. Our results indicate that there are many similarities in male and female interview technique. The results also show that female TV-hosts gave the impression of being more powerful in the interviews through their choice of questions and their demeanor. The male TV-hosts gave the impression of still being a part of the male dimensions in journalism. They show signs of typical male qualities. We conclude that female TV-host aim to tear down the divide between the male and female dichotomy in journalism, whereas the male TV-hosts continue to work in the same way they always have.

Vliv chronotypu a času testování na výsledky kognitivních testů / Effect of chronotype and time of assessment on the results of cognitive tests

Baranyaiová, Katarína January 2018 (has links)
Cieľom bolo identifikovať skupinu dobrovoľníkov dvoch extrémne vyhranených chronotypov, u ktorých druhej fáze experimentu sledovali výkon v kognitívnych testoch testech ( ich preferovanú a nepreferovanú dobu. Použitím neparametrických testových metód boli nájdené signifikantné rozdiely medzi sovami vtáčatami a tiež medzi...
