Buchelt, Beate, Scheiding, Wolfram, Eichelberger, Klaus 20 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)

Conradie-Faul, Jacqueline 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to investigate man's use of the mollusk within selected art forms, and to use the research results to design a contemporary museum exhibition, relevant within a South African context. Two sections are presented. In section A the selected art forms, fine arts, architecture, furniture design, masks and music and other sound instruments are thoroughly investigated to determine in what way the mollusk/shell is used in or on these art forms. A large number of figures are included to illustrate the available examples, and to aid the reader in the visualization of these applications. In section B a design solution is presented, based on the research results of section A. The compilation of an exhibition team and the whole design process, from the choice of an exhibition theme to the evaluation of the exhibition, is investigated. The exhibition designer plays the important role of interpreting the research results and to compile a design solution. A wide variety of exhibition techniques are recommended for the design solution, including theatre productions, special lighting and sound effects, demonstrations and tours. A number of figures are included, where photos taken during the museum visitations and design sketches provide further insight into the design solution. From the research results it was noted that an educational subject such as the mollusk/shell, can be made timely and attractive for the museum visitor by the use of creative, contemporary and relative exhibition techniques.

A reflexive analysis of an original composition for Mellotron using transcriptions of the MKII rhythms and fills presets as a compositional tool

Shadel, Nick 11 1900 (has links)
My dissertation is an investigation of the rhythm and fills presets on the Mellotron MKII (1964) through a series of compositions. All the sounds used in these compositions are Mellotron sounds from the MKII, which were edited and arranged using a digital audio workstation (DAW). In this study I dissect the instrument, and outline every aspect of the rhythms and fills presets. In the process, I develop an expanded model of performance practice on the instrument, presenting new playing and compositional possibilities. These are made possible through comprehensively documented analysis of the instrument’s sample set and the tempo, key and pitch permutations achievable through its on-board modulation controls. The Mellotron is significant because it was among the first samplers in history, and quickly became an iconic sound, woven into the cultural fabric of 1960s British pop. The Mellotron was used on The Beatles’ ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’, Led Zeppelin’s ‘Kashmir’, David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’, and The Rolling Stones’ ‘2000 Light Years From Home’, to name a few. While the Mellotron is featured on these famous songs, it has never been used as a solo instrument for a long form composition, nor have its samples ever been transcribed. The study takes a reflexive approach, using journals compiled through the composition process to support the development of new Mellotron techniques and compositions. The compositions presented in this study establish and demonstrate the Mellotron’s capability for extended solo work. The new techniques presented here make the Mellotron more practical for improvisation, composition and performance in new musical contexts. Additionally, the research expands scholarly/educational literature on electromechanical keyboards, providing in-depth technical, historical and musical data on the Mellotron. / Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology / M. Instruments (de musique) d’un spectacle aborigène à Taïwan : herméneutique d’une performance « hors sol » / (Musical) Instruments of a Aboriginal « Spectacle » in Taiwan : hermeneutics of an « hors sol » performance.

Coueffe, Alban 16 January 2012 (has links)
This thesis attempts to analyse various phenomena observed from a topic apparently clearly delimited in time and space: an on-stage performance in a touristic theme park in Taiwan featuring musical instruments presented as traditional ones. Such delimitation in time and space, presents itself on different levels, from a more global –Taiwan- to a more local – the stage- through an intermediate one – the park, but also in the process of writing this thesis.Firstly, we will try to understand our condition as a researcher, to consider that what we produce, the thesis, as something which cannot be completely neutral. The goal here is to keep in mind that every narrative produces a discourse and, thus, is subjective.Such narrative brings us, in a second moment, to rethink Taiwan’s history. In this part, the goal is to understand, through the analysis of Taiwan’s historiography, what is the specific Taiwan’s history that take place now in Taiwan. In other words: its context not solely on a local scale, but also in a global scale. In the third part of this thesis, we endeavour on the understanding of a phenomenon not specific to Taiwan, Tourism, to better understand the specificity of such practice within the island, and finally of such practice in the amusement park: the place of our show. Because we consider this park as a "hors sol" place, we try to approach it as a heterotopia, where differents times and spaces coexist. The fourth part of the thesis focus on the on-stage performance and the musical instruments on stage, but also those listed by ethnomusicologists, in order to analyse what is present on the scene, what is not, and the reasons for these choices. These different levels of focus required for a more comprehensive understanding of the subject, lead us in the fifth part in the hermeneutics of this show — show that we understand as a discourse — where we observe the formation of a syncretic indigenous culture in Taiwan, with highlight the "fields" (in Bourdieu’s sense) of the show involved.

The Relationship Between Learning Persistence and Equipment Design Through the Lens of Expectancy-Value Theory

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Learners' attitudes and beliefs during the initial stages of learning have a profound impact on their future decisions, practice habits, and persistence. In music education, however, surprisingly little research has explored how physical equipment design might influence novices' attitudes and beliefs. The current study addresses this gap by examining how novices' motivation and perception differ based on the physical design of the musical instrument they interact with while learning. Fifty-two adult participants completed an online survey measuring their expectancies (e.g., confidence), value beliefs (e.g., enjoyment, interest, and social merit), and anticipated persistence while attempting to learn the electric guitar. Afterward, participants attempted to learn and perform several beginner-level tasks while using a conventionally designed or ergonomically designed guitar. The conventionally designed guitar was a commercially available model marketed toward beginner and intermediate-level guitarists. In contrast, the ergonomic guitar was a custom model based on expert design recommendations to improve ease of use, comfort, and user experience. Participant learning expectations and values were assessed before and after a one-hour practice session. Results revealed that novices who used the ergonomic guitar reported significant gains in anticipated learning enjoyment. Alternatively, novices who used the conventional guitar exhibited no such change. Beyond this relationship however, the ergonomic guitar was not found to meaningfully affect participants' confidence, interest, physical discomfort, and task difficulty perceptions. Additionally, the ergonomic guitar did not have a statistically significant influence on learning persistence ratings. One important implication extracted from this study is that a single practice session may not provide enough time or experience to affect a novices' attitudes and beliefs toward learning. Future studies may seek to remedy this study limitation by using a longitudinal design or longer practice task trials. Despite this limitation however, this exploratory study highlights the need for researchers, music educators, and instrument manufacturers to carefully consider how the physical design of a musical instrument may impact learning attitudes, choices, and persistence over time. Additionally, this study offers the first attempt at extending the equipment design literature to music education and Expectancy-Value Theory. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Applied Psychology 2016

Síntese por modelagem física da clarineta = modelo por guia de ondas com escoamento / Synthesis by physical modeling of the clarinet : model using waveguides with flow

This study aims to apply the technique of Digital Waveguide in synthesis of woodwind instruments, particularly the clarinet. This technique was developed in the mid-80 and since then, has application in the synthesis of musical instruments by physical modeling. It consists, roughly, in the process of discretization of the traveling wave solution of the Wave Equation. This leads to a digital filter structure that simulates the propagation of sound waves to the right and left with the speed of sound propagation, c. However, in the published results of physical modeling, the air flow velocity, u, was not included. The contribution of this work is to redesign the structure of digital filters in order to contemplate the velocity of the fluid. The theoretical framework provides that in a medium in motion the velocities of propagation to the right is c + u and to the left is c ? u. It is proposed then a stratification of the tube of the clarinet in layers divided by the same area or same width in order to verify the influence of velocity profile in the synthesized sound. It was observed that the inclusion of flow provides a "distortion" in the internal pressure of the tube. It sets resemblance to experimental results / Doutorado / Engenharia de Computação / Doutor em Engenharia Elétrica
