The persistence of female genital mutilation (FGM) and its impact on women's access to education and empowerment : a study of Kuria district, Nyanza province, Kenya

Ondiek, Concellia Aoko 06 1900 (has links)
The overall policy goal of education for the Kenyan Government is the provision of education and training to all Kenyans as it is fundamental to the Government’s overall development strategy. This emphasis means that every Kenyan has the right to education and training no matter his/her socio-economic status. The Government has therefore allocated substantial resources and there has been notable achievements attained, but the sector still faces major challenges related to access, equity, and quality amongst others (Session paper no. 1 2005:2). One of these major challenges to access is the existence and persistence of retrogressive traditional practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM).The first concern of this study is that despite the immense awareness of the dangers on the victims in many aspects in life, and efforts to stamp it out, FGM still persists and thrives in many parts of the country to date. Secondly, there is an ever growing gender disparity in Kuria district, whereby women professionals are hard to come by. Even in the teaching profession which is associated with females in Kenya, there are a negligible number of Kuria female teachers. There is therefore need to liberate these girls from the persistent “senseless genital mutilation” by proper and relevant socialization and empowerment against cultural practices. The Cultural Lag theory of sociologist William F. Ogburn (1964) will be the underlying theoretical perspective of this study to explain the phenomenon, focusing explicitly on the / Sociology / DLITT(SOC)

The Destruction of the Imagery of Saint Thomas Becket

Cucuzzella, Jean Moore 05 1900 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the destruction of imagery dedicated to Saint Thomas Becket in order to investigate the nature of sixteenth-century iconoclasm in Reformation England. In doing so, it also considers the veneration of images during the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Research involved examining medieval and sixteenth-century historical studies concerning Becket's life and cult, anti-Becket sentiment prior to the sixteenth century, and the political circumstances in England that led to the destruction of shrines and imagery. This study provides insight into the ways in which religious images could carry multifaceted, ideological significance that represented diversified ideas for varying social strata--royal, ecclesiastical and lay.

Progressing from identification and functional analysis of precursor behavior to treatment of self-injury.

Dracobly, Joseph Daniel 12 1900 (has links)
An evaluation of the utility of assessing and treating severe problem behavior through precursor functional analysis was completed. Ongoing measurement of problem behavior in two settings in the participant's natural environment was conducted for the duration of the study. A precursor to self-injurious behavior was identified using descriptive assessment and conditional probability analyses. A precursor functional analysis was then conducted. Subsequently, a treatment, in which precursor behavior produced the maintaining variable identified in the precursor functional analysis, was implemented in the natural environment. Treatment resulted in increases in the precursor behavior and decreases in self-injury in both the treatment setting and the second setting in which observations occurred. Implications of the assessment and treatment procedures are discussed.

Pham, Phi-Phuong 06 1900 (has links)
Nurses in the field of child psychiatry are familiar with the phenomenon of self-harm among adolescents because, when the situation arises, they are often called upon to intervene. However, sometimes misunderstandings, misperceptions and negatives attitudes in regard to self-harm may impair their ability to work with the patients involved. This study seeks to explore self-harm from the standpoint of nurses in child psychiatry, describe recommended nursing interventions and outline organizational-context factors that may affect the way these interventions are executed. An exploratory qualitative research approach was adopted, and several data-gathering methods were used, including interviews with participants and a period of observation in the unit in which the study was conducted. Analysis of the verbatim records in accordance with the procedure developed by Tesch (1990) elicited seven categories of nursing interventions: helping relationships, guidance, evaluation, safety, teaching, emotions and perceptions of self-harm, and prevention of social contamination. Three categories of factors that influence these interventions also emerged: interpersonal team work, nurses’ duties in child psychiatry, and the organizational culture in which members of the care team operate. The results of this study will help nurses better understand adolescent self-harm. The study further suggests possible approaches that might help nurses in child psychiatry improve their interventions. The findings may also make it possible for the management of institutions to bring about changes, particularly in terms of work organization and training for nurses in the field.

Univerzalismus lidských práv ve světle plurality kulturních hodnotových vzorů Afriky / The universalism of human rights in the light of plurality of cultural value patterns in Africa

Guindon, Ľubica January 2011 (has links)
Ľubica Guindon :Universalism of Human Rights in the Light of pluralism of African cultural values The purpose of this thesis is to analyze actual discourse in international law terms about universal or culturally determined characters of human rights. This theoretical problem is introduced with the focus on legal qualification of female circumcision (FC/ FGM ) in international human rights protection. The study goes beyond the scope of international law and reaches cross-disciplinary analysis related to the African context and its cultural, political and social factors. Chapter One addresses the theoretical issues of the notion of human rights, its sources and models in international law. This passage challenges an African approach to human rights bills including a catalogue of individual duties towards family, state and society as a whole. This concern about collective identity of a person within his or her community is a very important feature of African understanding of human rights and human dignity, and can enrich the universal consensus in this field. Within the theoretical issues of the international human rights protection it is necessary to look at the global, regional and local dimension of legal regulation. The most influential strategies on the global level are universal treaties with...

No. of bitstreams: 1 GUILHERME WYKROTA TOSTES.pdf: 1193399 bytes, checksum: b3ef0dec85a943ae0c917ab3cb8e07cc (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-07 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior - CAPES / This research aims to psychoanalytically investigate the experience of people who selfinjure themselves. It is justified by the comprehension that the symptom that expresses emotional suffering it is catching attention among mental health professionals and gaining a certain social visibility. This essay is structured as qualitative research and it is organized around the use of the psychoanalytical method and the investigation of a set of posts which, in the foreground, is signed by people who identify themselves as adepts of self-injurious acts and, in the background, there are also comments made by other Internet users linked to the main post. Successive readings of the material, in a floating attention state, allowed the interpretive production of two affective-emotional fields: "Lack of affection" and "Crime and Punishment". The overall frame indicates that those who have shown the conduct studied here live in an imaginative / imaginary hostile world, marked by the experience of persecutory guilty due to the lack of affection, care and consideration, pointing out that fundamental requirements in the constitution of the personality are not being satisfactorily contemplated.

HIV/AIDS and the role of gender inequality and violence in South African Law

Mswela, Mphoeng Maureen 06 1900 (has links)
South Africa has not escaped the rising prevalence and severe impact of HIV/AIDS in relation women. From an economic and social vantage point, the HIV/AIDS epidemic hits women the hardest, with underprivileged black women the most susceptible to the virus. The theoretical framework of this research focuses on the intersection between HIV/AIDS, gender inequality and gender violence, and more specifically, on certain cultural practices and customs that contribute towards and exacerbate women’s subordination and inequality, which in turn, increase women’s exposure to become infected with HIV. Relevant to this focus is inevitably an investigation of perceived threats to specific fundamental human rights as a result of some entrenched practices that continue to reinforce women’s subordinate position in society, aggravated by the high incidence of gender violence. / Constitutional, International and Indigenous Law / LL.M.
