Performance and Cyclomatic Complexity Correlation in Java Reactive Frameworks

Cervin, Anton, Trenter, Christian January 2022 (has links)
Software performance is of interest to all who want to lower their hardware costs and provide services with speedy responses to users, to this end reactive programming can be employed. Therefore it is important to measure the performance of tools such as reactive frameworks and to compare and contrast them with each other in order to improve the development of these tools, and help provide developers with the information they need when searching for a reactive framework that suits their project. To achieve this the study will aim to indicate the reproducibility of the research on reactive framework performance conducted by Ponge et al. on three commonly used reactive frameworks. Further, a root cause analysis to identify the sources of the identified bottlenecks will be carried out and complemented by suggestions for improving the performance of those parts in the reactive frameworks that are causing performance issues. An analysis of how performance correlates with the cyclomatic complexity of the frameworks will also be presented. We find, that in some test cases, the performance of the frameworks differs depending on the machine used, and that the latest framework versions do not show a marked performance increase. Further, we discover hotspots in the Mutiny framework and reason about potential synchronization bottlenecks. We attempt to find a novel use case for cyclomatic complexity as an indicator for performance but find that no correlation exists between cyclomatic complexity and performance for reactive frameworks.

Living With the Redcoats: Anglo-American Response to the Quartering Acts, 1756-1776

Lee, Hyun Wu 07 May 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to explore the nature and language of Anglo-American opposition to quartering from the start of the French and Indian War in 1756 to the Revolutionary War in 1776. This paper will also attempt to demonstrate the shifting focus of Anglo-American arguments against the quartering of troops over these two decades. Quartering of troops in private homes and defraying the cost of quartering were the prevalent concerns of Anglo-Americans during the French and Indian War. Then, the Quartering Act of 1765 significantly changed the perception of Anglo-Americans toward quartering of troops as a matter of illegal taxation. Lastly, the unfolding events in 1768 and onwards, in Boston, marked a turning point as the fear of a standing army in peace time redefined Anglo-American opposition to the quartering of redcoats. The significance of Anglo-American opposition to the Quartering Acts paled in comparison to other colonial grievances that stemmed from taxation issues, but it was important enough to finds its place in the Declaration of the Independence and in the Third Amendment of the federal constitution. / Master of Arts

Both Sides of the Barbed Wire: Lives of German Prisoners of War and African Americans in Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, 1944-1946

DeLucca, Claire 18 May 2018 (has links)
Located outside of Alexandria, Louisiana, Camp Claiborne was temporarily home to more than 500,000 U.S. servicemen and women during its short existence. Thousands of German prisoners of war also were held for more than two years in a section of the camp. Racial problems stemming from the policies of Jim Crow South and the blatant inequality eventually led to an African American mutiny within the camp. The events from 1944 to 1946 at Camp Claiborne provide insight into the mindsets of white Southerners and the generation of African Americans who would influence the major civil rights victories in the following decades.

Bachaři, vězně politického nenáviděti budeš! Borská vzpoura jako prostředek k utužení disciplíny uvnitř Sboru vězeňské stráže? / Screw, Thou Shall Hate the Political Prisoner! Bory Mutiny as a Means to an End to Strenghten the Discipline Inside the Prison Guard Corps?

Zeman, Kryštof January 2018 (has links)
The thesis deals with so called "The Bory Rebellion" case, the trial fabricated by the communist regime, which took place in April and May 1950. The thesis captures the whole course of the trial, the issue by whom it was iniciated , how the investigation and hearing passed. Further it describes preparation and subsequent realization of the political campaign aimed to multiply the effects of the trial towards the Prison Guard Corps. It also seeks to find out whether the primary objective of the trial actually was to strengthen discipline within the Corps, or there was also another aim pursued by the ruling dictatorship, and how , and if at all, there was any coverage of the case towards the general public. Some attention is also paid to the victims of the trial and their further fates. The thesis primarily exploits original files of the National Archive and the Archive of the Security Bodies. Key words Prison Guard Corps, prison, rebellion, prison guard, political prisoner

Dissensions, conflits internes, guerre civile en Grèce et à Rome. Etude lexicologique / Civil Discord, Internal Conflicts, Civil War in Greece and Rome. Lexicological Study

Fevrier Reulier, Françoise 19 November 2011 (has links)
Giving a name to civil conflicts is difficult for those who are part of them. One must deal with censorship, the difficulty of talking about a conflict of that kind and, overall, the personal view of each person. The aim of this study is to analyze how witnesses and participants use words in historical literature (speeches, historiography) through the study of famous writings of civil conflicts during Greek and Roman Antiquity (in the late Republic). Though periods and historical situations were different, comparing lexical terms used by Thucydides, Xenophon, Polybius, Caesar, Cicero and Sallust highlights some continuous similarities about exposed concepts and technical naming methods. The comparative study allows us to study particularities of each language. Greeks writers usually use the old word στάσις, whose very large field needs several stays. In classical times, metaphorical wordings clarify its meanings. But these benefits becoming inadequate, Polybius had to use different approaches of designating conflicts, foreshadowing later choices of words by Roman authors. In Roman times, around the new name bellum ciuile, and its equivalent, ciuile bellum, historians and writers multiply words and various ways of naming situations of civil wars, for trying to force upon their understanding of these wars. Several of those words will be exploited under the Empire to follow up this way of imposing one’s conceptions.

DNA analysis of human skeletal remains associated with the Batavia mutiny of 1629

Yahya, Padillah January 2008 (has links)
In this thesis human skeletal remains believed to be the victims of the Batavia Mutiny of 1629 were subjected to DNA analysis. So far the remains of 10 individuals (of which 9 were available for this study) have been exhumed from Beacon Island, in the Houtman’s Abrolhos, off the coast of Western Australia. The remains are now stored in the Western Australia Maritime Museum (WAMM) in Fremantle. In this research an attempt is made to type ancient DNA (aDNA) from the remains of the Batavia Mutiny, which are almost 400 years old. Previous anthropological studies have been performed on these remains in order to assign sex, age and stature. The aim of the present project is to study the familial relationships of the remains and to determine their sex based on molecular genetic analysis. In order to protect the invaluable museum specimens and minimise the risk of contamination from exogenous contemporary DNA, a tooth sample from each available individual (designated A15507, A16316, A15831, M3901, SK5, SK6, SK7, SK8 and SK9) was subjected to DNA extraction. Comparison and optimisation of DNA extraction methods from more recent teeth samples was performed in order to determine the most suitable method for the DNA extraction of the ancient teeth samples. Three types of genetic markers were analysed in an attempt to study the familial relationships and determine the sex of each individual. Multiplex primers (Hummel, 2003) which simultaneously amplify the HV1 and HV2 regions of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were used in this research to analyse familial relationships. These primers were selected because of their ability to amplify small fragments (131bp, 168bp and 217bp) of DNA template, which suit the nature of aDNA samples. Primers published by Sullivan et al.(1993), which amplify a 106bp region on chromosome X and 112bp on chromosome Y of the amelogenin gene, were used to determine sex. In addition, short tandem repeat (STR) marker were also analysed to determine familial and sex using the AmpFlSTR®Profiler PlusTMPCR kit from Applied Biosystems. The PCR conditions of all primers were optimised before usage on the Batavia remains. As aDNA analysis is prone to contamination, stringent precautions were undertaken throughout this research. Despite this, contamination is suspected in some of the mtDNA sequences obtained (particularly from SK5, SK7, A15507 and A15831), which most probably came from the positive control used in the optimisation analysis. For these samples the sequences for the HV2 region were poor and polymorphisms relative to a reference were similar to each other and to the positive control profile. However, some conclusions have been made on other individuals (SK8, SK9, M3901, A16316) based on the HV1 and HV2 sequences obtained. Based on two or more different polymorphisms observed in the individuals it was concluded that it is likely there is no maternal relationship between individuals A16316 and SK8, SK9 and M3901 and between individuals SK8, M3901 and SK9. However these results require repetition for confirmation. The attempt to type the amelogenin gene on chromosomes X and Y was unsuccessful most likely due to the poor preservation of the remains. It is apparent from this research that although it was possible to extract aDNA (especially multicopy mtDNA) from teeth material that were almost 400 years old, the main hurdle in this aDNA analysis was contamination and DNA degradation.

After landing on the beach at Iguape, the slaves were captured and nine of them charged and taken to be prosecuted in Fortaleza, where six were sentenced to death, one to life imprisonment with forced-labour, yet another to being whipped and forced to go around in irons, and the last acquitted. The trials were summary in nature, demonstrating the need for a prompt and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the "horrendous attack". The present research aims to examine the mutiny and the various events which surrounded the negro slaves on board the Laura. To this end we propose examining the system of cabotage shipping carried out between the North and Northeast of Brazil, in particular that from Pará to Pernambuco, in an attempt to understand the work environment of the slave-sailors on the Laura Segunda. In addition, we wish to investigate and detail the various movements which occurred during the 1830s and which fostered a climate of political and social instability in Brazil, paving the way for various acts of rebellion by the slaves, of which the mutiny on the Laura Segunda was one. The memory of the mutiny and the events surrounding the negros on board the Laura remained alive in Fortaleza for some considerable time. We plan to arrive at an appreciation of the meaning of these events and how they were appropriated by Ceará society, and in particular by the slaves.

AN ANALYSIS OF ROMAN MUTINY NARRATIVES THROUGH MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES

Denman, Amanda M. 10 1900 (has links)

This paper is concerned with the use of mutiny narratives in historical texts as a microcosm of the historians’ goal of the work as a whole. This study is built upon the recent trend in scholarship, where a particular feature of a text has been studied to provide an analysis on the author or the underlying purpose of his work. Mutinies and, more specifically, mutiny narrative patterns have not been studied to a great extent for this type of analysis. However, based upon their tradition delineation and explanation of events and their ubiquitous speeches, mutiny narratives are capable of providing a new avenue for this type of analysis. The first chapter will look at the mutiny of Scipio Africanus’ troops at Sucro in 206 B.C.E. as presented by the historians Polybius and Livy. Both attempted to organize their works upon particular moral and didactic lines, the results of which are clearly expressed in their construct of the mutiny. This intentional framework is also present in the poet Lucan’s historical epic the Bellum Civile, who shaped the mutiny of Caesar’s troops in 47 B.C.E. in order to express his own belief in the inherent cataclysm and paradox of civil war. Finally these same themes of chaos and contradiction are also present in my third chapter and its analysis of five mutinies found in Tacitus, two in 14 C.E. and three in 69 C.E. under Galba, Otho and Vocula. Tacitus deliberately engineered the earlier mutinies in order to create both thematic and linguistic echoes to the later seditions in order to prove that the same problems that caused the later civil war were present under the earliest emperors.
/ Master of Arts (MA)

The protest was a direct, unorganized, heterogeneous, violent action from the point of view of tactics of struggle and based on causes considered legitimate, which contributed to the demonstration of the unemployed to demonstrate logic; in short , a movement against the military dictatorship. Although in 1983 there was a process of political openness and a serious economic crisis, there were several reactions in civil society and political power. In this way, we also tried to talk about the Civilian Police Dossier and the indictment of those accused of participating in the demonstrations, as well as the representations elaborated in the news “Folha de São Paulo and Estado de São Paulo”, analyzing all the sections and issues of April 1983. As for the representations, we note the predominance of inconvenient and unchanging arguments about protest, as well as associations of it with social disorder. So, we hope to understand the practices and experiences of struggle of a marginalized social group, the political significance of the action and the reason for the elaborated representations about the manifestation and its evidences / Esta dissertação tem como objetivo compreender a manifestação organizada por uma multidão de desempregados em Santo Amaro, zona sul da cidade de São Paulo entre os dias 04 e 06 de abril de 1983.
