Hypotéza unique items v překladu. Korpusová studie. / Unique items hypothesis in translation. A corpus-based study.

Špínová, Adéla January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is focused on testing the so-called unique items hypothesis on Czech language data. Supposed Czech unique items were chosen from lexical units, word-formation phenomena, syntactic structures and language use phenomena. Their frequency in a comparable monolingual corpus of contemporary Czech was established and the differences in frequency were statistically tested. This quantitative research was accompanied by a qualitative probe into the English source texts from which sentences containing selected unique items were translated using an aligned parallel corpus of English-Czech translations. The results reveal a general tendency of unique items to be underrepresented in translated language and a variety of source- language phenomena that underlie unique items usage in the target language.

A machine learning approach to the identification of translational language : an inquiry into translationese learning models

Ilisei, Iustina-Narcisa January 2012 (has links)
In the world of Descriptive Translation Studies, translationese refers to the specific traits that characterise the language used in translations. While translationese has been often investigated to illustrate that translational language is different from non-translational language, scholars have also proposed a set of hypotheses which may characterise such di erences. In the quest for the validation of these hypotheses, embracing corpus-based techniques had a well-known impact in the domain, leading to several advances in the past twenty years. Despite extensive research, however, there are no universally recognised characteristics of translational language, nor universally recognised patterns likely to occur within translational language. This thesis addresses these issues, with a less used approach in the eld of Descriptive Translation Studies, by investigating the nature of translational language from a machine learning perspective. While the main focus is on analysing translationese, this thesis investigates two related sub-hypotheses: simplication and explicitation. To this end, a multilingual learning framework is designed and implemented for the identification of translational language. The framework is modelled as a categorisation task, the learning techniques having the major goal to automatically learn to distinguish between translated and non-translated texts. The second and third major goals of this research are the retrieval of the recurring patterns that are revealed in the process of solving the task of categorisation, as well as the ranking of the most in uential characteristics used to accomplish the learning task. These aims are ful lled by implementing a system that adopts the machine learning methodology proposed in this research. The learning framework proves to be an adaptable multilingual framework for the investigation of the nature of translational language, its adaptability being illustrated in this thesis by applying it to the investigation of two languages: Spanish and Romanian. In this thesis, di erent research scenarios and learning models are experimented with in order to assess to what extent translated texts can be diff erentiated from non-translated texts in certain contexts. The findings show that machine learning algorithms, aggregating a large set of potentially discriminative characteristics for translational language, are able to diff erentiate translated texts from non-translated ones with high scores. The evaluation experiments report performance values such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F-measure on two datasets. The present research is situated at the con uence of three areas, more precisely: Descriptive Translation Studies, Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing, justifying the need to combine these elds for the investigation of translationese and translational hypotheses.

台灣地區的世界文學翻譯作品:書目計量分析 / A Study of World Translated Literature in Taiwan: A Bibliometric Approach

董蕙茹, Dong, Huei Ru Unknown Date (has links)
Translation is a process to communication by languages or signs. Literature translation should follow the original principles which are real, clear, and understanding, and it should also afford the value of literature art. Therefore, we can say literature translation is an art, which shows the appreciation of the beauty and sense for two different nationalities. The modern literature translation is not only the result of cultural exchange but also the way for cultural exchange. The main purpose of this study is to explore the world translated literature in Taiwan from 1950 to 2008 based on the theoretical perspectives of the bibliometrics. Three ways are used to compile statistics, including “bibliographic units”, “copies”, and “works” . The distributions of institution productivity are examined by using the Lotka’s, Price and 80/20 Laws. A total of 32159 bibliographic records is retrieved from the NBINet (National Bibliographic Information Network) databases. The results of this study about world translated literature in Taiwan are as follows: (1) The original translated literatures are mostly concentrated in England, USA, France, German, and Russia. (2) The overall growth of the world translated literature in Taiwan is in a vigorously up-growing trend. (3) The publishing of the world translated literature in Taiwan is concentrated in 21 publishers. (4) Most translated literatures, authors, and translators are mainly concentrated in England, USA, France, German, and Russia. (5) The distribution in every country is not the same. Furthermore, the examinations of world translated literature in Taiwan are: (1) The examination of Lotka’s Law is found inapplicable. (2) The percentage of low production authors counted by bibliographic units is similar to Lotka’s Law. (3) The percentage of low production translators counted by works is similar to Lotka’s Law. (4) Price’s Square Root Law and 80/20 Law are found inapplicable to the distribution of authors’ and translators’ productivity.

Poválečná generace překladatelů: malé a velké dějiny. Ilustrace problematiky na rozhovorech s překladateli / The postwar generation of translators: Small and Big History. Illustration issues on interviews with translators

Neudertová, Miriam January 2013 (has links)
During the research project "The situation of literary translation in Czech society after 1945", which was initiated by the Institute of Translation studies of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University and undertaken between 2008 and 2011, nearly thirty interviews were conducted with important Czech translators of the post-war generation. This thesis follows the cited research project. It is divided into three parts. The first part presents an introduction to the methods of oral history. The second part confronts objective historical facts with subjective memory - information obtained through the conducted interviews. The third part expands the corpus with two further sets of interviews. These are introduced by a short depiction of the presented narrators and followed by an editorial note. In the summary the paper points out and evaluates the results gained by the present research, including the newly collected material.

[en] CHAPEUZINHO VERMELHO: IDEOLOGICAL AND POETOLOGICAL MARKS OF ITS WRITINGS AND REWRITINGS / [pt] CHAPEUZINHO VERMELHO: MARCAS IDEOLÓGICAS E POETOLÓGICAS DE SUAS ESCRITAS E REESCRITAS

ANNA OLGA PRUDENTE DE OLIVEIRA 03 September 2014 (has links)
[en] This thesis intends to analyze Brazilian rewritings of the tale Chapeuzinho Vermelho, a canonical text in children’s literature. This research, of qualitative character, takes as source text the French version written by Charles Perrault (17th century), the first author in the West to officially register this and other stories of oral tradition in the written literature. Based on the Descriptive Translation Studies and the theoretical assumptions of André Lefevere, we will discuss some aspects found in the French literary system of the 17th century, and investigate how the tale has been rewritten in the Brazilian literary system in two different moments: in the initial stages of the development of the national children’s literature (at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of 20th century) and in the 21st century, when different rewritings have been done by Brazilian translators and adaptors renowned in the area of translation and/or literature. The analysis focuses on rewritings by the following authors: Figueiredo Pimentel (2006; 1911 [1896]), Monteiro Lobato (2007 [1934]), Katia Canton (2005), Mário Laranjeira (2007), Walcyr Carrasco (2009), Maria Luiza Borges (2010), Ivone Benedetti (2012) and Rosa Freire d’Aguiar (2012 [2007]). The corpus of this research also includes texts such as prefaces, postfaces, letters and interviews, through which we intend to examine not only conceptions of translation but also cultural, linguistic and ideological factors that interfered in the translators’ choices, and the potential effect of those choices in different times, considering that the rewritings are inserted in contexts of ideology and power.

Překlad a výklad páté knihy (1.-15. kap.) Orosiových Historiarum adversum paganos libri VII / Translation and Analysis of the Fifth Book (chap. 1-15) of Orosius' Historiarum libri VII

Marek, Bořivoj January 2011 (has links)
This paper consists of the translation and analysis of Chapters 1-15 of Book V of Historiarum adversus paganos libri VIII by Paulus Orosius. The analysis is based on a comprehensive commentary on linguistic and stylistic aspects of the texts examined, and on a thorough factual commentary. The linguistic commentary concentrates on the composition of the Fifth Book, on the construction of discourse by the means of particles and other discourse markers, as well as on the linguistic features and peculiarities distinctive for the author, his age and the genre of historiography (such as specifically Late Latin syntax, non-Classical vocabulary, rhetorical figures, tropes and other stylistic features). The factual commentary contains a detailed description of the events mentioned in the text and their historical context. Close attention is paid to the character of the author's narrative, his approach to the historical data, choice of the events that interest him most as well as the way in which the author portraits them as mutually connected. Among the questions important for the commentary are whether he follows the wider tradition of Roman historiography or if and in which way the author's own opinions and persuasions are reflected in his work. This section also comments on the relation between Orosius'...
