The Long Lives of Old Lutes: The Cultural and Material History of the Veneration of Old Musical InstrumentsKirsch, Sebastian 07 July 2023 (has links)
This study examines the object biographies of musical instruments and the function of age in the cultural and material history of the lute. It follows the central question of why old instruments were valued more greatly than new ones and what measures had to be executed to adapt the objects to the ever-changing musical style. It traces the lute in its several cultural functions from the 17th to the 19th century: as a musical instrument, as a symbol, as a commodity, and as an object that had to be adapted, repaired, and altered by several generations of lute makers. This interdisciplinary approach uses a broad spectrum of sources from treatises, lute manuals, forewords in printed lute music, and depictions of lutes in literature, poetry, and visual arts to construct a narrative of the appreciation of old musical instruments. It investigates the material changes that were necessary to ensure their continued use by a profound study of more than 100 instruments in public and private collections. The different business models and prices in the trade of lutes are compared and connected to the common knowledge about old instruments and their brand characteristics among lute players. This study employs methods from musicology, organology, material culture studies, acoustics, economics, art history, technology, and digital humanities. This multivalent approach enhances the understanding of the general dynamics of commodities as status symbols, object biographies, and functional objects and connects them to the material and cultural history of objects using the lute as a case study.

Previous issue date: 2008-06-20 / Universidade Anhembi Morumbi / This theses investigates the social and cultural circulation of a frock from
its manufacture in a couture House atelier back in the 1920s Paris to its
storage at Museu Paulista da Universidade de São Paulo in 1993, where it
was catalogued as Boué Soeurs RG 7091. Searching trhough some of this
object paths its manufacturing, the people who wore it, the cities where
it circulated this paper proposes the interpretation of objetcs as a method
to elaborate a dress cultural biography. The material analyses of RG
7091, approached here as a historical document, allowed to question the
idea of a totalitarian fashion hegemony over all forms of dress. Through
the interpretation of certain material aspects, elements and articulation
of the dress, I discuss some timely and spacially perceptions as well as
youthness and modesty. The material evidences of people s interference
but also of time, climate, storage and circulation conditions over textiled
clothes indicate sensitive meanings in the ways to dress the body / Esta tese investiga a circulação social e cultural de um vestido desde sua
A análise material do RG 7091, tratado

If Athens holds a special place in the Western imagination because of its prestigious past, the modern capital has recently been associated with an unprecedented social and economic crisis, with harmful austerity measures and with struggles. The city occupies a key place in the study of cultures and societies because it concentrates many economic, social and material matters. These matters are embedded in urban imaginaries that are central to important negotiations with the past and future projections. While urban phenomena are often the subject to systematic studies and planning, this research aims to reveal paradoxical imaginaries that are embedded in both the space and history of the city. It stands at the crossroads of material culture studies and media studies to approach the imaginary by focusing on the materials that make it up. Concrete, marble, and sour orange trees are both mediators of these imaginations and vehicles for informal interventions in the city. The methods of flânerie, collage and zine are all chosen for their tactical dimension (De Certeau, 1990), i.e., as an alternative to hegemonic methods and shapes. The research-creation approach emphasizes praxis in a perspective of reappropriating the city. The collection of materials is inspired by strolls through the city and various sources to arrive at a non-exhaustive assemblage of philosophical, poetic, historical, and personal texts and images. This material is gathered using the techniques and logic of collage to present it in the form of a zine. The concrete, marble and sour orange tree trigger reflections in the construction of a cultural identity and release broader notions such as power relations, the relationship to nature, to knowledge, to the common and to otherness.

Universal Biography and Autobiography: for a model of analysis of the rituals of
production and consumption in multimedia art regards the study and analysis of alternative
forms of questioning how we create our collective cultural memory through
objects and rituals.
The field of investigation here shown stands apart from areas of History or Art criticism.
The approach to rituals is made from the Socio-cultural view point, aspiring to
recognize a model of cultural profusion.
Foremost, the role of memory in the construction of cultural content is here analyzed.
With that intent, the validity between external devices, such as hermeneutics and
rituals, is discussed on that construction. Approaching broad themes such as Memory,
Culture, Language, dichotomies between Hermeneutics and Rituals, Text and Image are
established to understand an evolution from traditional rituals to contemporary ones in
artistic activity.
It is questioned and suggested that contemporary rituals, with their potential of being
performative manifestations that centre on the individual, constitute a privileged format
for a transverse language, independent of religion, nationality or group.
Being the investigation developed in the scope of the Master in Multimedia Art, an
analysis of artistic proposals was followed, that discusses the breadth of the multimedia
and performance concepts. The presence of the sub-heading For a model of analysis
of the rituals of production and consumption in multimedia art , represents a framing
of the dynamic which is present on contemporary rituals in biographical and autobiographical
artistic work.
Pondering about the model of interpretation and analyses is made in the presence of
the body of work of the artist: Tracey Emin, Mona Hatoum and Morgan O Hara, seeking
to inquest if their work can be characterized as a memory agent.
