Locational benefits and innovation performance : the contingency value of ambidexterity in inbound and outbound open innovation and absorptive capacity

Han, Jianlong January 2018 (has links)
Open innovation (OI) is currently being applied as a new mode for firms to utilise both internal and external resources for R&D and new product developments. Investigating the impact of OI on China's high-tech firms is becoming increasingly important. Under the guidance of China's national innovation policy and the rise of innovation in high-tech industries, OI is regarded as having a positive impact on the competitiveness of Chinese firms and as bringing a significant innovation outcome. By utilising and integrating external knowledge and resources, OI can promote high-tech firms' R&D development in China's current transitional environment. A key objective of this thesis is to examine the overall relationship between locational factors, ambidexterity in OI and innovation performance given absorptive capacity (ACAP). The thesis reviews the current literature regarding OI, ambidexterity in OI, the cluster effect and ACAP and then integrates these lenses to build links for constructing a new model of the research. This includes the relationships between locational factors, ambidexterity in OI and innovation performance. It also examines the moderating effect of ACAP and, more importantly, the mediation effect of ambidexterity in OI on the relationship between locational factors and innovation performance. The findings of the thesis reveal that locational factors positively affect ambidexterity in OI, while ACAP positively moderates the relationship between the two factors. In addition, ambidexterity in OI - an optimal combination of inbound and outbound OI - can significantly influence innovation performance and is crucial to the ambidextrous conduction of firms. ACAP also positively moderates the relationship between ambidexterity in OI and innovation performance. Finally, ambidexterity in OI can mediate the relationship between locational factors and innovation performance, and ACAP moderates the overall relationship between locational factors, ambidexterity in OI and innovation performance. This thesis makes a number of contributions to the existing OI literature. First, building on the cluster perspective, the thesis contributes to the literature on OI by recognising the influence of locational factors on the balance in OI. The examination of ACAP also contributes to the literature by highlighting the contingent value of ACAP on the relationship between locational factors and the balance in OI. Second, the thesis contributes to the OI literature by bringing a greater conceptual clarity to the view of balance. A more balanced portfolio can bring better innovation performance than those that are less balanced. The thesis also enriches the knowledge in the relationship between the balance in OI and innovation performance, which demonstrates the moderating effect of ACAP on this relationship. Third, the study conceptualises the balance in OI that mediates the relationship between locational factors and innovation performance. It is a key contribution to the existing OI literature by advancing our understanding of the overall relationship among locational factors, the balance in OI and innovation performance.

Applicability of open distributed processing in development of open automation system.

Jorge Luis Risco Becerra 09 September 1998 (has links)
This thesis purposes to demonstrate the applicability of the open distributed processing standard, in the development of the open distributed system applied in the automation. To achieve this objective a strategy is defined, whose basic elements are the ODP methodology and the ODP experiment. The methodology supports the ODP standard in a systematic structure and the experiment applies it in one project, to observe the behavior of the applicability process. The ODP methodology is composed by concepts, procedures and models, proposed by the ODP standard; by techniques and concepts of the objects oriented, and the structure of an open automation system model (OAS), establishing an manageable and coherent structure. In the ODP experiment, this methodology is applied in the development of an automation system which scope is the large enterprise projects that use in his development process the concurrent engineering. The result of this automation will be characterized by the Open Distributed System and will be configured as a project cooperative environment (Groupware). Finally, the experiment results will be compared with other methodologies that don\'t use ODP, to obtain conclusions about the use of the ODP standard in the automation system projects.

Aplicações de robótica open-source na automatização do preparo de amostra para a análise cromatográfica de compostos orgânicos / Open-Source robotics in the automation of sample preparation for the chromatographic analysis of organic compounds

Deyber Arley Vargas Medina 19 October 2018 (has links)
The growing demand for rapid, simple and eco-friendly analyzes has made the search for miniaturization and automation of sample preparation procedures a permanent necessity. Although, nowadays there are a number of miniaturized sample preparation techniques, they are used manually in most situations. The access to automation tools is limited yet, in many chemistry laboratories. Fortunately, Open-Source robotics platforms have become an interesting alternative in the lab-made development lab made instruments and automated systems. This thesis presents three examples of laboratory development of robotic systems for the automation of miniaturized sample preparation techniques. In a first study, a cartesian robot capable of simultaneously operating six extraction microsystems was designed, constructed and programmed. This system was tested in the automation of microextraction by packaged sorbent (MEPS) and validated in the extraction of HPAs in sanitary sewage samples, demonstrating high accuracy and throughput analysis. A second cartesian robot, equipped with a single extraction unit, was designed, constructed and programmed to accomplish for the first time the online integration of the liquid phase microextraction (LPME) and the liquid chromatography analysis. This system allowed the development of a method for the determination of triazines, with an analysis time of 10 minutes, including sample preparation and separation / detection of the analytes. Finally, by integrating flow techniques, Open-Source robotics tools and 3D printing, dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction based on solidification of floating organic drop (DLLME-SFO) was completely automated for the first time. The developed system was validated in the development of a method for the determination of parabens in personal care products, water, urine and saliva, thus demonstrating the great potential of modern technologies in the development of new, versatile and efficient automated systems in chemistry laboratories.

A adoção de software livre na USP: um estudo de caso / The adoption of open source software at the University of Sao Paulo: a case study

Humes, Leila Lage 30 September 2004 (has links)
The objective of this work is to study the adoption of Free Software in the University of São Paulo. It is of special interest the study of the cultural and organizational aspects that contributed to the adoption of the Free Software among the systems administrators. The adoption study, was not limited to the individual adoption, but it extended to the organizational adoption once the adoption of technological innovations in organizations differs in special ways from the individual adoption. The organizational adoption examines aspects as the extension of the use of the innovation and, how deeply the use of the technology affects processes, structures and organizational culture. The adoption phenomenon in the University is particularly important for having it been a voluntary adoption of a new technology, in great scale and well succeeded. This research studies which factors restricted or favored the adoption of the new technology, as well as the social and cultural context of this adoption in different Units of USP

The Effects of Open Educational Resource Adoption on Measures of Post-Secondary Student Success

Robinson, Thomas J 01 May 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether the adoption of Open Educational Resources had a significant effect on student learning outcomes in seven courses taught at seven post-secondary institutions. The use of open educational resources (OER) is increasing in the United States. Initiatives focusing on expanding the use of OER as a replacement for traditional textbooks at the post-secondary level include OpenStax, Project Kaleidoscope, Open Course Library, and others. While researchers have begun to explore OER, few have sought to evaluate the quality of OER as a function of student academic success. In this dissertation, I examined measures of student success in seven courses at seven different early-adopters of Project Kaleidoscope where faculty members chose to adopt OER to replace traditional textbooks. The sample for this study consisted of students using open textbooks in courses at seven Project Kaleidoscope post-secondary institutions, as well as a control group of students at those same institutions who used traditional textbooks in sections of the same courses. I used an ex-post-facto quasi-experimental design, in which I compared students using OER to students using traditional textbooks in comparable courses. In order to control for the threat of selection bias, I used propensity score matching (PSM) to match treatment and control groups on a set of demographic variables. After creating matched treatment and control groups, I used multiple regression and logistic regression to examine whether textbook selection predicts a measurable difference in student achievement after accounting for relevant covariates. I found that students using open textbooks earned, on average, lower grades than students who used traditional textbooks, after controlling for student-level and course-level covariates. Further analysis revealed that this negative differential was isolated to students in business and psychology classes. I also found that students who used open textbooks enrolled in more credits than students using traditional textbooks, controlling for relevant covariates. Because of the finding of a variation in textbook effect from course to course, future studies may seek to understand the effects of particular OER adoption instances rather than the global effect of OER adoption.

Bibliotekariers syn på Open access : Enkätundersökning bland bibliotek med inriktning teknik, naturvetenskap, medicin och farmaci / Librarians' Perception of Open Access : A Questionnaire Study among Libraries with Specialisation in Technique, Natural Sciences, Medicine and Pharmacy

Nakano Hylander, Aiko January 2009 (has links)

Open access to scientific literature on Internet is a concept which is supposed to change librarians' work. The aim of the thesis was to examine librarians' perception of Open access. A questionnaire survey was conducted among librarians at libraries with specialisation in technique, natural sciences, medicine and pharmacy in Sweden. Even though Open access can be regarded as an alarming for librarians' work, the results of the survey showed that the future of the librarians' profession can be positive if they flexibly adopt their work routines according to changes in publication forms and library users' needs.
