This research aims to verify how Supply Chain Operational Capabilities are developed from technologies (resources) of an external agent. For this, we intended to analyze the changes or improvements in Practices and Operational Capabilities in the links of the Supply Chain, from the use of technologies, transferred by technological knowledge business services (T-KIBS), as well as the impact that these technologies and operational changes may result in Operational Performance. The theoretical framework focuses on the process of developing Operational Capabilities based on changes in Operational Practices. As qualitative metolodigy for data collection, the case study was used, through semi-structured interviews. Thus, 73 companies and two focus groups, belonging to 17 links, from three Agroindustrial Supply Chains from two countries were researched. As a conditioning, was the use of technologies, transferred by an external company to the Supply Chain, used as operational resources, inducing operational changes. The results were verified according to changes that the technologies induced in the Operational Parameters (Practices, Capacities and Performance), both for the links and for the Supply Chains. Finally, we present research propositions about the influences that the implementation of T-KIBS technologies can cause in the Operational Parameters of the links and Supply Chains, varying according to the operational strategies of the companies, the position of adopting links in relation to the Chains (upstream or downstream), as well as the level of structuring of the chains, the time the technologies were adopted and the need to create new links due to the use of the technologies.

Operační a krizové řízení v rámci Policie ČR / Operational and Crisis Management within the Police of the Czech Republic

ŠVÉDA, David January 2011 (has links)
This thesis deals with the issue of operational and crisis management within the Police of the Czech Republic. The organizational structure and the staffing of operational centers and emergency management centers is described as closely related to police activities, with emphasis on the responsibility for executing tasks resulting in particular from internal acts of the Police management as the essential component of the Integrated Rescue System (IRS). The issue of emergency calls handling and the related communications between the basic components of the integrated rescue system, particularly between the Police and the Fire and Rescue Service, considering the technological and material and technical equipment of operational centers of the police of the CR is dealt with. The empirical section is focused directly on the "modern" Integrated Operational Centre of Regional Police Headquarters of the Vysočina region where questionnaires are distributed to workers (policemen) of this organizational element of the Police, the object of study is divided into three parts. The first part is focused on the IRS issues, the level of knowledge, orientation in this area and views on cooperation of the IRS components are identified by the questionnaire. The second part is focused on crisis management, the knowledge level of respondents in this area is determined. The third part of the questionnaire is directed entirely to obtain information and knowledge from practice of the staff members involved in special activities. The discussion and conclusion gives information about the progressive development and integration of operational centers, including the possible and most convenient way (system) of operational and crisis management within the Police of the Czech Republic.

Critical success factors for the implementation of an operational risk management system for South African financial services organisations

Gibson, Michael David 29 February 2012 (has links)
Operational risk has become an increasingly important topic within financial institutions of late, resulting in an increased spend by financial service organisations on operational risk management solutions. While this move is positive, evidence has shown that information technology implementations have tended to have low rates of success. Research highlighted that a series of defined critical success factors could reduce the risk of implementation failure. Investigations into the literature revealed that no critical success factors had been defined for the implementation of an operational risk management system. Through a literature study, a list of 29 critical success factors was identified. To confirm these factors, a questionnaire was developed. The questionnaire was distributed to an identified target audience within the South African financial services community. Reponses to the questionnaire revealed that 27 of the 29 critical success factors were deemed important and critical to the implementation of an operational risk management system. / Business Management / M. Operational modal analysis and finite element modeling of a low-rise timber building

Petersson, Viktor, Svanberg, Andreas January 2021 (has links)
Timber is a building material that is becoming more common and of interest for use in high-rise buildings. One of the reasons is that timber requires less energy input for the manufacturing process of the material compared to non-wood based materials. When designing high- rise timber buildings it is of great significance to understand the dynamic behavior of the structure. One method to obtain the dynamic properties is to use Operational Modal Analysis, which is based on the structural response from operational use. Finite element (FE) analysis is a tool which can be used for dynamic analysis for large structures. In this study an Operation Modal Analysis (OMA) was conducted on a four-story timber building in Växjö. A finite element model was created of the same building using commercial FE packages. Based on the mode shapes and natural frequencies obtained from the OMA, the FE model was fine-tuned. The purpose of this thesis is to gain knowledge of which parameters that might have a significant role in finite element modelling for a structural dynamic analysis. The aim is to develop a finite element model that accurately simulates the dynamic behavior of the tested building. It was shown from the result that is possible with an enough detailed FE model to capture the dynamic behaviour of a structure. The parameters that had the largest effect on the result can be pointed to the mass and the stiffness of the structure.

A Mathematical Framework on Machine Learning: Theory and Application

Shi, Bin 01 November 2018 (has links)
The dissertation addresses the research topics of machine learning outlined below. We developed the theory about traditional first-order algorithms from convex opti- mization and provide new insights in nonconvex objective functions from machine learning. Based on the theory analysis, we designed and developed new algorithms to overcome the difficulty of nonconvex objective and to accelerate the speed to obtain the desired result. In this thesis, we answer the two questions: (1) How to design a step size for gradient descent with random initialization? (2) Can we accelerate the current convex optimization algorithms and improve them into nonconvex objective? For application, we apply the optimization algorithms in sparse subspace clustering. A new algorithm, CoCoSSC, is proposed to improve the current sample complexity under the condition of the existence of noise and missing entries. Gradient-based optimization methods have been increasingly modeled and inter- preted by ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Existing ODEs in the literature are, however, inadequate to distinguish between two fundamentally different meth- ods, Nesterov’s acceleration gradient method for strongly convex functions (NAG-SC) and Polyak’s heavy-ball method. In this paper, we derive high-resolution ODEs as more accurate surrogates for the two methods in addition to Nesterov’s acceleration gradient method for general convex functions (NAG-C), respectively. These novel ODEs can be integrated into a general framework that allows for a fine-grained anal- ysis of the discrete optimization algorithms through translating properties of the amenable ODEs into those of their discrete counterparts. As a first application of this framework, we identify the effect of a term referred to as gradient correction in NAG-SC but not in the heavy-ball method, shedding deep insight into why the for- mer achieves acceleration while the latter does not. Moreover, in this high-resolution ODE framework, NAG-C is shown to boost the squared gradient norm minimization at the inverse cubic rate, which is the sharpest known rate concerning NAG-C itself. Finally, by modifying the high-resolution ODE of NAG-C, we obtain a family of new optimization methods that are shown to maintain the accelerated convergence rates as NAG-C for minimizing convex functions.

Encoding sex ratio information: automatic or effortful?

Dillon, Haley Moss January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Psychological Sciences / Gary L. Brase / Operational Sex Ratio (OSR: the ratio of reproductively viable males to females in a given population) has been theorized and studied as a construct that may influence behaviors. The encoding of sex ratio was examined in order to determine whether the cognitive process underlying it is automatic or effortful. Further, the current work examines whether OSR or Adult Sex Ratio (ASR: the ratio of adult males to females) is encoded. The current work involved four experiments; two using frequency tracking methodology and two using summary statistic methodology. Experiment 1 found a strong correlation between OSR of conditions and estimates of sex ratio. Participants in Experiment 1 were uninformed on the purpose of the experiment, thus the strong correlations between actual and estimated sex ratio suggest a level of automaticity. Experiment 2 found a strong correlation between the ASR of conditions and estimates, suggesting that individuals do not encode OSR over ASR. Experiments 3.a. and 3.b. demonstrated automaticity in estimates of sex ratio from briefly presented sets of faces, for two different durations: 1000ms and 330ms, the later of which is widely accepted as the length of a single eye fixation. Overall this work demonstrated a human ability to recall proportion of sexes from arrays of serially presented individuals (Experiments 1 and 2), and that ASR is encoded when participants are presented with conditions including older adults. This work found the encoding of sex ratio to be highly automatic, particularly stemming from the results of Experiments 3.a. and 3.b. Conclusions from this work help to verify previous research on sex ratio’s effect on mating strategies through evidence supporting the automatic nature of encoding sex ratio. Further, the current work is a foundation for future research regarding sex ratio, and leads to several proposals for future endeavors.
