Principals’ Leadership Practices for Sustaining Music in K-3 Education

Clark, Ivone Fraiha 01 January 2019 (has links)
Public school principals who provide and sustain music in elementary programs are often confronted with budgetary cuts and reduced funding for music education. There is a dearth of research regarding music as an essential element in K-3 education in low-income rural schools. The purpose of this generic qualitative inquiry was to explore and describe leadership practices of principals, who despite fiscal challenges, include and sustain music in the K-3 curriculum in a low-income rural area of a small county in North Carolina. Elliott and Silverman’s concept of praxial music education and Leithwood and Riehl’s philosophy of instructional leadership practices were used for the conceptual framework. Through individual interviews with principals (n = 4) and 3 focus groups with parents (n = 8) from Parent Teacher Organizations of elementary public schools in a low-income rural district, data were collected from a total of 12 participants involved with music education. Participants described the importance of and the criteria for including music in the K-3 program regardless of economic challenges emphasizing the significance of school principals’ leadership practices. Data were analyzed using open coding to find emergent themes. Results suggested that commitment to sustaining music education in the K-3 program comes from evidence of children’s development of creative and critical thinking. Providing opportunities for an enhanced education may create perspectives that lead students to become engaged citizens for a more equitable society. The findings may also encourage educational leaders to find ways to sustain music in educational programs as a contribution to positive social change.

Saleh, Ramzia Hisham 17 April 2020 (has links)
This study builds on a small but growing body of research concerning socio-economic, cultural, political, and personal challenges influencing Saudi women’s professional development. Although Saudi women have more advantages and opportunities in 2020 compared to previous historical periods, women still face challenges related to employment and professional status. This research provides an in-depth analysis of the insider experience connected to challenges Saudi women face in work and life that hinder their professional development. Specifically, this research explored the role of social media in providing new opportunities to help Saudi women overcome challenges they face in work and life. Guided by a qualitative approach, this interpretive study is conducted through interviews, supporting documents analysis, and personal experiences. This study draws on Technofeminism, Intersectional Feminism, and Social Role Theory in order to provide a broad theoretical lens to help interpret findings. Using thematic analysis, six main themes were uncovered: (1) socio-cultural challenges, (2) personal challenges, (3) ethical challenges, (4) institutional challenges, (5) civic and professional engagement, and (6) socialization and privacy issues. General findings indicated that despite efforts from the Saudi Arabian government to enhance women’s rights in society, women continue to face socio-cultural, personal, and ethical challenges in work and life. The advanced analysis revealed that social media does have a positive role in providing Saudi women with new opportunities to overcome challenges they face but that cultural norms and traditional practices continue to create challenges that hinder Saudi women’s professional development.

Livelihood diversification and poverty among rural households in Capricorn District, Limpopo Province, South Africa

Maja, Tumiso Nighty January 2019 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. Agricultural Science (Agricultural Economics)) -- University of Limpopo, 2019 / Livelihood diversification in South Africa has become the backbone for many of the households‟ in rural areas and it is perceived as a strategy to cope with the growing population and the rapidly increasing poverty rate. A sizeable number of rural households in South Africa work two or more jobs to generate more income. This serves as a strategy to alleviate their poverty. In spite of these, it is evident that poverty and high rate of unemployment are still prevalent in the rural Capricorn District. Thus, this study examined the nexus between poverty and diversification of livelihoods and to ascertain whether the different livelihood diversification strategies engaged in make rural households better-off or worse-off in the study area. A multistage and simple random sampling technique was employed to collect data from a sample of 216 respondents. Analytical techniques employed were descriptive statistics, FGT Poverty Index and the Probit Regression Model. Nine variables were included as explanatory variables in the Probit Regression and only six variables (gender of the respondents, marital status of the respondents, years of formal education, household size, livelihood index and member of association) were found to be significant at 10%, 5%, 1%, 10%,1% and 5%, respectively. Based on the findings, the study recommends that the diversification of livelihood strategies needs to be strengthened among rural households, investment in formal and vocational training should be intensified to increase rural households‟ participation in more viable livelihood options in the study area.

Logopediskt perspektiv på utredning och behandling av flerspråkiga vuxna : en intervjustudie / Logopedic Perspectives on Assessment and Treatment of Multilingual Adults : An Interview Study

Issa, Robella, Erica, Johansson, Nyreröd Granath, Elisabeth January 2020 (has links)
The need of new and developed logopedic assessment tools and treatment methods for multilingual adults increase as the world becomes more globalised. Currently, the research of assessment and treatment for multilingual adults is limited. The aim of the current study is to investigate speech and language pathologists’ (SPLs’) thoughts and experiences of assessment and treatment of multilingual adults, in order to illuminate opportunities and challenges. These findings could in turn highlight the improvements that need to be carried out to facilitate the work of SLPs and to create a more equal healthcare.   The results of the study are based on interviews with 15 SLPs. The questions in the interviews focused on SLPs’ thoughts and experiences of assessing and treating multilingual adults. Many SLPs considered healthcare as unequal between monolingual and multilingual patients since several challenges can arise while working with multilingual adults. This may include: limited material for assessment and treatment, challenges with interpreting, and cultural challenges. Several SLPs requested more guidelines for assessment and treatment of multilingual adults. They also wished that interpreters had more knowledge about speech and language pathology and an improved collaboration between interpreters and themselves. The thoughts and experiences of the SLPs differed depending on what diagnoses they worked with. However, the majority of the interviews demonstrated that assessment and treatment with interpreters may involve several challenges. That area could therefore be viewed as the most urgent area of improvement. The conclusion of the study is thus that there are several areas that need to be improved regarding speech and language pathology assessment and treatment of multilingual adults: development of more material, increased knowledge about cultural aspects, need for guidelines, and improvements regarding assessment and treatment with the help of an interpreter.

Gebrauchstauglichkeit und Nützlichkeit. Usability und wahrgenommener Nutzen digitaler Lernangebote.

Karapanos, Marios January 2015 (has links)
