Habemus Papam: eleição papal nas coberturas midiáticas de jornais paulistas de Leão XIII (1878) a Francisco (2013) / Habemus Papam: Pope election in the media coverage in newspapers from São Paulo: since Leo XXIII to Francisco

No. of bitstreams: 1 Rafael Alberto Alves dos Santos.pdf: 67754761 bytes, checksum: fc1d70cf101f7502730af69d47551488 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-06-26 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Fundação São Paulo - FUNDASP / "Which simulacrum of Pope does the Paulista press media build when showing us the leaders of the Roman Catholic Apostolic Church after its respective elections?" That problematic guides the present dissertation. Using a corpus from "O Estado de S. Paulo" newspaper pages and the "Folha de São Paulo" in a 135 period of years, it is possible to analyze how this media plans a typology confronting its own values with the ones from the Catholic Church, which shows the thematic role of the Pope. The hypothesis is that the newspaper shows ways of presence for each Pope according to their own interests, trying to deceive the image of the elected Cardinal. Still, in a new perspective of the new theory that despite the restrictions of the Church, the simulacrum carries a way of being in the World deceived by individual characteristics from each Cardinal that is elected - in a syncretism of destinators. This investigation aims to deepen the reflection about language syncretism in the truths of the analyzed pages. On one hand, the Church as a destinator schedules the thematic route for the Popes. This route is lived by one Cardinal, himself as a destinator. In the Saint Peter Basilica balcony, these routes unify themselves and are projected for the World. Captured by the media, the scene is reorganized in another way through the newspaper pages by the language syncretism - verbal, visual and spacial. The theoretical foundation is the Discursive Semiotic, created by Algirdas Greimas and its unfolding in the Social Semiotics by Eric Landowski. It is taken to consideration the Plastic Semiotic, organized by Jean Marie Floch and build on by Ana Claudia Oliveira, especially in the studies of esthesia that make us feel the new Pope. The results aim to the possibility of a link between the simulacrum typologies built by the medias with interaction and risks, showing in the media projection the Catholic leaders and that there is a predominance in the hazards of accidents that reveals a dynamic by visibility. The new is, in fact, a figurativization of the new that remains in its depths with the intentionality and propagations of the Church's old speech / “Quais simulacros de Papa a mídia impressa paulista constrói ao dar a ver os líderes da Igreja Católica Apostólica Romana logo após suas respectivas eleições?”

A misteriosa doença de João Paulo II: Alzheimer e a construção da notícia / The mysterious illness of John Paul II: Alzheimer and construction of the news.

Silva, Maria da Graça Bernardes e 12 March 2008 (has links)
Given the assumption as Alzheimer\'s disease - a degenerative brain disease of unknown aetiology primary and that potentially affects individuals over 65 years of age - this thesis stresses the importance of science within a matter that is still a mystery to science and the journalism. The leitmotif is the mysterious illness of Pope John Paul II that has completely undermined. It was Alzheimer? The printed media plays an important role in the understanding of meanings, especially those relating to the risk of illness. The Alzheimer\'s Disease is analyzed in the journalistic coverage in three media: newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, Folha de S. Paulo and L\'Ossevatore Romano, the Vatican official vehicle for the period 2000 to 2005.

A Consideration of Mason’s Ethical Framework: The Importance of PAPA Factors in the 21st Century: A Seven-Year Study

Brown, Katharine Creevey 01 January 2018 (has links)
Richard Mason proposed a social framework for addressing the major ethical issues of the information age in his pivotal 1986 article “Four Ethical Issues of the Information Age.” In 2006, Alan Peslak validated the framework by measuring the current attitudes of students, IT professionals, and university faculty and staff toward the four key issues proposed by Mason: privacy, accuracy, property, and accessibility (referred to as PAPA). This study continues this inquiry into the seven-year period after Peslak’s research. Previously collected data was analyzed for 312 university computing majors taking a senior-level ethics course where Mason was taught and discussed. Demographic influences as well as differences over the period were considered. A single exam question administered consistently over the period was the focus. Results indicate, with Mason’s framework as a foundation, computing students can identify all of Mason’s ethical issues, selecting privacy as the most relevant issue of concern in their current environment. Age, gender, and computing work experience resulted in no differences in selection of relevant PAPA factors. All genders, all age groups, and all levels of computing work experience select privacy as the most relevant factor for society today. Privacy increased in importance over the seven-year period as the primary ethical issue for computing students. The ever-changing technology environment and new threats to society posed by these changes is discussed, including social networks, data breaches, consumer privacy, internet neutrality, and emerging technologies.

Engaging practices : re-thinking narrative exhibition development in light of narrative scholarship : a thesis presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in Museum Studies at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

Lambert, Stephanie Jane McKinnon January 2009 (has links)
This thesis bridges narrative theory and the practice of developing narrative exhibitions in museums. It aims to show how an understanding of narrative theory provides a dynamic context for evaluating ongoing exhibition practices and adapting them to changing attitudes and aspirations. For practitioners within the museum sector it introduces a rich body of previously under-utilised scholarship along with a method of interfacing it with museum practice. The idea of deriving ideas for museums from other sectors is not new. Museums increasingly embraced narrative in the 1980s after seeing its value in attracting audiences to film, theatre and theme-parks. Then it was assumed that what was relevant in one sector would be equally relevant in another. However, the interim upsurge of Media Studies suggests that rigorous examination of how each medium operates is necessary in order to identify similar constraints and affordances before scholarship from one area of practice can be appropriately applied in another sector. In opening a path for museum practitioners to gain insight from narrative practitioners in other sectors, the thesis intends also to open the way for knowledge to flow from the discipline of museum studies out into other areas of narrative practice, where cross-disciplinary approaches have already gained ground. At the outset, a context is established through a review of narrative literature. Two different approaches are used. Firstly a broad review of different ways to approach narrative is carried out and a typology of narrative is developed. Secondly commonalities are identified between narrative in exhibitions and narrative practice in other media. Exhibition practices are then described in detail, focusing on experience at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, where research was enriched by in-depth interviews with exhibition development staff. Te Papa’s development of narrative exhibitions is traced, and two case studies demonstrate how their model is put into practice to achieve narrative delivery within the museum galleries. For museum professionals and narrative practitioners in other fields, this thesis provides an opportunity to examine processes of narrative delivery against a backdrop of theory. It makes a useful link between the museum sector and other areas of narrative practice.

New Zealand's identity complex: a critique of cultural practices at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa

Williams, Paul Harvey January 2003 (has links) (PDF)
This dissertation critically analyses New Zealand’s National Museum Te Papa Tongarewa. Since it opened in 1998, Te Papa, arguably the world’s foremost exponent of the ‘new museology’, has been popularly and critically supported for its innovations in the areas of popular accessibility, bicultural history, and Maori-government management arrangements. As the first in-depth study of Te Papa, I examine and problematise these claims to exceptionality. In producing an analysis that locates the museum within cultural, political, economic and museological contexts, I examine how the museum’s particular institutional program develop, and point to limitations in its policy and practice.

Applying patient-admission predictive algorithms in the South African healthcare system

Daffue, Ruan Albert 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Predictive analytics in healthcare has become one of the major focus areas in healthcare delivery worldwide. Due to the massive amount of healthcare data being captured, healthcare providers and health insurers are investing in predictive analytics and its enabling technologies to provide valuable insight into a large variety of healthcare outcomes. One of the latest developments in the field of healthcare predictive modelling (PM) was the launch of the Heritage Health Prize; a competition that challenges individuals from across the world to develop a predictive model that successfully identifies the patients at risk of admission to hospital from a given patient population. The patient-admission predictive algorithm (PAPA) is aimed at reducing the number of unnecessary hospitalisations that needlessly constrain healthcare service delivery worldwide. The aim of the research presented is to determine the feasibility and value of applying PAPAs in the South African healthcare system as part of a preventive care intervention strategy. A preventive care intervention strategy is a term used to describe an out-patient hospital service, aimed at providing preventive care in an effort to avoid unnecessary hospitalisations from occurring. The thesis utilises quantitative and qualitative techniques. This included a review of the current and historic PM applications in healthcare to determine the major expected shortfalls and barriers to implementation of PAPAs, as well as the institutional and operational requirements of these predictive algorithms. The literature study is concluded with a review of the current state of affairs in the South African healthcare system to, firstly, articulate the need for PAPAs and, secondly, to determine whether the public and private sectors provide a suitable platform for implementation (evaluated based on the operational and institutional requirements of PAPAs). Furthermore, a methodology to measure and analyse the potential value-add of a PAPA care intervention strategy was designed and developed. The methodology required a survey of the industry leaders in the private healthcare sector of South Africa to identify, firstly, the current performance foci and, secondly, the factors that compromise the performance of these organisations to deliver high quality, resource-effective care. A quantitative model was developed and applied to an industry leader in the private healthcare sector of South Africa, in order to gauge the resultant impact of a PAPA care intervention strategy on healthcare provider performance. Lastly, in an effort to ensure the seamless implementation and operation of PAPAs, an implementation framework was developed to address the strategic, tactical, and operational challenges of applying predictive analytics and preventive care strategies similar to PAPAs. The research found that the application of PAPAs in the public healthcare sector of South Africa is infeasible. The private healthcare sector, however, was considered a suitable platform to implement PAPAs, as this sector satisfies the institutional and operational requirements of PAPAs. The value-add model found that a PAPA intervention strategy will add significant value to the performance of healthcare providers in the private healthcare sector of South Africa. Noteworthy improvements are expected in the ability of healthcare provider’s to coordinate patient care, patient-practitioner relationships, inventory service levels, and staffing level efficiency and effectiveness. A slight decrease in the financial operating margin, however, was documented. The value-add methodology and implementation support framework provides a suitable platform for future researchers to explore the collaboration of preventive care and PM in an effort to improve healthcare resource management in hospitals. In conclusion, patient-admission predictive algorithms provide improved evidence-based decision making for preventive care intervention strategies. An efficient and effective preventive care intervention strategy improves healthcare provider performance and, therefore, adds significant value to these organisations. With the proper planning and implementation support, the application of PAPA care intervention strategies will change the way healthcare is delivered worldwide.

[en] SUFFERING AND MEANING IN THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD: A DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE HOMO PATIENS, BY VIKTOR FRANKL AND THE APOSTOLIC LETTER SALVIFICI DOLORIS, BY POPE JOHN PAUL II / [pt] SOFRIMENTO E SENTIDO NO MUNDO CONTEMPORÂNEO: UM DIÁLOGO ENTRE O HOMO PATIENS DE VIKTOR FRANKL E A CARTA APOSTÓLICA SALVIFICI DOLORIS, DE JOÃO PAULO II

JOSEFA ALVES DOS SANTOS 18 January 2019 (has links)
[en] This dissertation aims to examine the problem of suffering and the meaning of life in the contemporary world, starting from an analysis that contextualizes the understanding and the experience of suffering in the present society. We will study the book Homo Patiens, by the viennese psychiatrist Viktor E. Frankl, and the Apostolic Letter Salvifici Doloris by Pope John Paul II, seeking a dialogue between faith and culture, through the common points in the authors thoughts. In the face of contemporary society s proposals to suppress suffering, which often results in an existential emptiness, contempt for the weakest and distancing from God, we will search for more adequate answers about the meaning of suffering, about the value of the human person and about the relation between God and the human suffering.

Branco, Nanci Moreira 27 March 2012 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 4677.pdf: 2134266 bytes, checksum: 6df397fd9e24c44b8f077e8e9b635325 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-03-27 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / This study aims to analyze how the dialogical relationships and construction of meaning are built in current Catholic religious discourse, here represented by the encyclical letters of Pope Benedict XVI. I understand that even a discourse as established as the religious it is influenced by several others with which they share and to which they oppose ideas or use them to establish the meaning of the discourse. Thus, the dialogism and construction of meaning will be observed in the clash that occurs between the texts of the pope and the present discourses in society in different contexts, explicity and implicity referred to by the author, or even the discourses that are formed in different contexts in which these themes are inserted. So, the developed analysis will seek to understand, from the observation of dialogism in the documents in question, how to organize such discursive genre, and then establish, from the undeniable formation of extraverbal on the verbal, which is the relationship they have with these texts that circulate in society. I therefore consider that dialogical relations enable convergence or divergence, acceptance or refusal. In that way, one must do the question: what kind of opposing discourses should they keep deleted to preserve the hegemony of the official discourse? Which discourses are confronted with it? A discourse that intends to be dominant it tends to exclude others, not belonging to their universe that are not accepted or are discredited. The fundamental question of this analysis is therefore to understand the discourses of which we must defend and discourses to which we must resort to form the intended meaning in the encyclical letters in Authier Revuz (1990): that another one needs to defend, the other is needed to resort to be formed (p.31). Hence, this analysis seeks to verify how it happens, in the language, the confrontation of ideas which constitutes the discourse of this letter, analyzing how the voice of the Other is part of such discourse. The thought that will guide this research will be based on studies of the Russian philosopher Milkhail Bakhtin on Dialogism and Ideology.

Modalidade volitiva em lÃngua espanhola nos discursos do Papa Francisco em viagem apostÃlica / Volitional modality in the Spanish language in the speeches of Pope Francis on apostolic journey

Andrà Silva Oliveira 09 October 2017 (has links)
The main goal of this research is to analyze and describe the manifestation of the volitive modality in Spanish language in the discourses of Pope Francis on apostolic journey, considering the relationship between Formulation (Interpersonal Level and Representational Level), Codification (Morphosyntactic Level) and the contextual component. According to the Discursive-Functional Grammar (FDG) and assuming that the volitive modality is related to what is (in)desirable (HENGEVELD and MACKENZIE, 2008), we postulate that the Morphosyntactic Level encodes the volitive modality differently, considering the elements of the Interpersonal Level, the Representational Level and the Contextual Component. To this end, we have constituted a corpus of 13 speeches given by Pope Francis in four apostolic journeys between the years 2015 and 2016 to the United States, Cuba, South America (Ecuador, Bolivia and Paraguay) and Mexico. The quantitative-qualitative analysis of the data obtained with the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) in relation to the volitive modality revealed to us that Pope Francis prefers to modify, volitively, to Listener 1 (heads of states, high authorities and society civilian) in political settings and in religious settings for Listener 2 (bishops, priests and Catholic people). We find that the Supreme Pontiff usually builds himself as an Enunciator type source in his discourses, preferring declarative and optional illocutions for the establishment of semantic values of desideration, willness and intention, mostly on the Common Domain type target; using modal auxiliaries, full verbs, and volitive constructions, and preferably employing the present indicative. We also found that the categories of analysis related to the Morphosyntactic Level were related both to the categories of analysis related to the Representational Level, as well as to the Interpersonal Level and the Contextual Component, thus attesting to our primary hypothesis. Finally, we present our difficulties on the analysis and description of the volitive modality, since it can present itself in an "atypical" way (without the use of modalizers) through the context or final clauses; in addition to discussing the marks of politeness and courtesy employed by means of volitive verbs, but without configuring them as an expression of volition, as well as the cases of aspectuality of the full verb will
