Lewenssin van Suid-Afrikaanse sakelui : 'n Bedryfsielkundige perspektiefCronjé, Maretha 06 1900 (has links)
woonagtig in Gauteng.
The purpose of this research is to theoretically outline and operationalise meaning in
life as it applies to the life-world of situated South African businesspersons, and to describe
phenomenologically their experience of that phenomenon.
integration of opposites.
It is posited that the businessperson experiencing life as meaningful, inhabits the landscape of
his/her psyche in a relational way. In contrast, the person experiencing life as meaningless,
displays a non-relational orientation, paradigm and being-in-the world.
The phenomenological investigation made use of interviews to allow the phenomenon, meaning in
life, to unfold. The sample consisted of married business persons, thirty years and older, and
residing in Gauteng. Heterogeneity (in terms of gender, religious convictions and
corporate circumstances) was also taken into account.
Meaning, with meaningfulness and meaninglessness as its two extremes on a continuum,
was examined, focusing on life orientation, engagement style, values, spirituality, growth,
development, transcending, alienation, transitoriness and fatalism, conformism,
collectivism, fanaticism, and aspiring to mythical success.
In the literature investigation, which was based on existential, humanistic and holistic
paradigms, operational definitions of meaningfulness and meaninglessness were construed. The
profile of the South African businessperson experiencing the phenomenon, was construed with
reference to his/her paradigm, characteristics and conduct. A meaning making process is
proffered, while meaning is construed as an
Six themes unfold from the investigation, centring around spatiality, basic mood, human bodiliness
and being-in-the-world, as well as the presence of the psyche, other people and the world
(including the earth and a transpersonal entity). The South African businessperson appears to
inhabit his/her landscape in a mainly non relational manner. There are some elements of
relational existence, but the needs and heart's desires voiced by the businesspersons concerned
point to a longing for a more relational existence.
In conclusion: Deficient relations can be associated with a non-relational paradigm, which causes
an experience of life as meaningless. A meaning continuum shows South African businesspersons as
figuring closer to meaninglessness, and needing to move towards the opposite pole, namely
meaningfulness.
To promote meaningfulness, quality of life and optimal functioning, the relational paradigm is
recommended as point of departure in remedial intervention. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / DCom (Bedryfsielkunde)

An individual case study is used in this study, to discuss the complementarity between distance and intimacy in the therapeutic relationship. The focus is on recursive and selfreflective processes between the therapist and the client in order to explain the way in which intimate and distant interactions were coconstructed. The therapeutic process was discussed in the context of ecosystemic and social constructionist epistemologies. Research was done according to the principles of the naturalistic research paradigm and overlaps between this research paradigm and epistemologies that were discussed are brought forward through the discussion of the case study. There are also
references in this study to related issues, such as touching and boundaries in the therapeutic relationship, therapy as an a-social and paradoxical context, and the neutrality of the therapist, which connect with the theme of this study. These themes are integrated in the discussion of the case study. / Psychology / M.A. (Kliniese Sielkunde)

An open systems critique of the macro theories of developmentMatshabaphala, Johannes David Manamela 11 1900 (has links)
This study is geared at an open systems critique of the macro theories of development. It is
highlighted in this study that we are living through the realities of the open systems, and yet
much of development thought is based on closed systems philosophies, principle and
ideologies. The first chapter gives an orientation into the origins of both the closed systems
and open systems paradigms respectively. Included in this orientation chapter, is the
literature review of the various research contributions of the major trends in development
thought. The second chapter expands on the evolution of the closed systems paradigm and
its influences on development thought. This chapter further explains the attendant
philosophies, principles and ideologies that underlie the closed systems paradigm. The third chapter captures the open systems paradigm and its influences on contemporary
development discourse. Further to the discussion on the closed systems paradigm, the
chapter elaborates on the philosophies, principles and processes that underlie this paradigm.
The fourth chapter is on a discussion of trends in development thinking, traced from the
traditional, through the medieval to the modern, right up to the contemporary. This entails
tracing the theory to its ontological background right up to its implications for social reality in
contemporary development thought and experience. The fifth chapter is on the open systems
critique of the trends in development thinking, while the sixth chapter revisits the open
systems paradigm and its implications for development thought. In the seventh chapter is the
recapitulation of the findings in the study and recommendations for both development thought and practice. / Public Administration and Management / D. Litt. et Phil. (Development Administration)

Exploring the role of spirituality in coping of traffic officersJacobs, Rochelle 06 1900 (has links)
The main purpose of this study is to explore the role spirituality plays in the coping of traffic officers within the South African Traffic Services. A sample of ten traffic officers participated in the study, and data was obtained by means of open-ended questions during in-depth and semi-structured interviews. The literature review aimed to conceptualise spirituality, to conceptualise coping, and to theoretically explore the role of spirituality in the coping of traffic officers. Specific aims for the empirical study were: to gain a better understanding of how traffic officers experience the role of spirituality in coping with their role within the South African context; to provide a framework that can assist with creating an understanding of the role spirituality plays in coping as a traffic officer; and to formulate recommendations for possible future research that explores the role of spirituality in the coping of traffic officers within the discipline of Industrial and Organisational Psychology, more specifically in employee and organisational wellness, and career counselling.
The research findings showed that traffic officers in the sample all utilised spirituality in the workplace to various extents, and that they exhibited adaptive coping abilities when doing so. They associated less spirituality or a lack of spirituality with weaker coping abilities. It was found that spirituality in the traffic officers is informed by a foundation of spirituality or religion, purpose to their work and life, their connection to their spiritual source, and the fruits of spirituality. Their coping ability was influenced by upbringing and background, by stressors from their work environment and by coping mechanisms. The role of spirituality in the coping of traffic officers culminated in their ability to interpret the meaning of spirituality, and then to implement spirituality in order to cope. / Industrial & Organisational Psychology / M. Factors influencing managers' attitudes towards performance appraisalDu Plessis, Elizabeth Susan Catherina 02 1900 (has links)
An increasing number of reports indicate that managers are opposed to performance appraisal. It is important to understand why managers have favourable or unfavourable attitudes towards performance appraisal and it is necessary to investigate the causing factors of these attitudes. The aim of this research was therefore to gain a deeper understanding of the factors that influence managers’ attitudes towards performance appraisal. This study was conducted within the interpretive research paradigm and situated in a medium-sized organisation within the financial services industry. The sample was purposefully selected and the data were collected through in-depth interviews and naïve sketches. The data were analysed applying Tesch’s descriptive analysis method.
The main findings indicated that managers who needed to conduct performance appraisals perceived and experienced performance appraisal as an uncomfortable and emotional process that might cause them to become defensive. Moreover, it was revealed that the managers experienced uncertainties about aspects of performance appraisal, such as the purpose of performance appraisal, what must be measured and frequency of performance appraisal. As a result of such uncertainties, managers might not always have the ability or readiness to conduct performance appraisals, especially when the performance appraisal contains negative performance feedback. Furthermore, the organisational context might put managers in an undesirable situation to distort performance ratings of employees in order to achieve organisational goals or the manager’s personal goals, which in turn
influence the attitude of the manager. The findings of the study can assist organisations in influencing managers’ attitudes more positively and in enhancing the overall performance appraisal process. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M. Com. (Industrial and Organisational Psychology)

Mission to and with the poor of Mankweng in Polokwane : a post development perspectiveShingange, Themba 01 1900 (has links)
The Church social missions have undergone different paradigm shifts whilst trying
to respond to challenges faced by the poor in the society. It seems that at the
beginning the Development paradigm was the one used by churches in designing
their social mission strategies. According to this paradigm, help for the poor in the
society was to come from the Western countries’ development initiatives; in the
process of implementing such strategies the local people’s cultural aspirations were
often neglected. On the other hand, the poor were not given a chance to take destiny
into their own hands in order to define the solutions to their problems. However,
this paradigm was later declared a failure and a need to move to the Post
Development Paradigm was advocated.
This study argues that most churches in Mankweng still base their social missions
strategies on the Development paradigm and therefore they fail to adequately
respond to the challenges faced by the poor in that community. The study therefore
looks at a possibility of developing a new social mission strategyin Mankweng that
is based on the Post Development Paradigm. Though the title is about Mankweng,
the focus of the study is on the Western part of the Township called Ntshitshane.
Observations and interviews were conducted amongst the community members in
that area. After a thorough analysis of the findings it was established that the poor
in that context relies among other things on their cultural ethic of bothoas a means of
addressing their social challenges. This study concludes that the same cultural ethic
of botho used by the poor there can be a viable point of departure in defining a social mission strategy within that context. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / M. Th. (Missiology)

This research is based on a youth intervention organisation founded by the researcher in
1997. The organisation (Agape Copeland Train) is located in the Northern Cape. Youths’ contexts in
the Northern Cape are fraught with psychological, social and relational problems, including
violence, alcoholism, teenage pregnancies, depression, crime, poverty, and curtailed future
prospects. An exploratory enquiry, informed by ecological and positive psychology, is undertaken.
In particular, this research focuses on the (often neglected) perspectives of facilitators who work
with youth. Exploration of how facilitators’ well-‐being is impacted on whilst serving youth in
this challenging context is undertaken. Interviews with facilitators yielded themes of positive
transformation, including shifts in mindsets and positive affect. In addition, aspects of the
organisation’s development, as relevant to the context of the research, are described and a model
of youth facilitation process, as developed by facilitators within the organisation, is presented.
The researcher’s own experiences in the organisation (as director and as a facilitator) are
reflected upon. Observations, incidents, and experiences are used as additional data sources.

Archaeology and aDNA in Oceania : Debates on migration patterns the past 50 yearsJohansson, Tom January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to investigate how discussions in archaeology and genetics influence the consensus on human origins and migrations in the South Pacific. By analyzing the genetic research on chicken- and sweet potato-DNA, I present a general overview of how genetics and archaeology shape the understanding of how humans have colonized the Pacific. By deconstructing a review on how the Pacific was settled based on aDNA, I analyze a geneticist’s perspective on archaeological problems. Through this analysis I suggest how archaeology should be approached on a theoretical level in order to be relevant in understanding human migrations in the Pacific. I propose that archaeology’s strength lie in interpreting material culture through an agency perspective in order to reach a dimension not obtainable by biological perspectives / Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka hur diskussioner i arkeologi och genetik påverkar hur vi ser på mänskliga migrationer i Oceanien.

A Journey from the Wordless is a study of the development of the author’s own professional knowledge. After an introductory chapter on theory and method, there are four chapters treating of the author`s academic training as an artist (Ch. 2), a presentation and analysis of his own exhibitions (Ch. 3), a chapter on a cooperative effort entitled Pompeii in Time and Space (Ch. 4), and a concluding discussion of the nature of personal knowledge (Ch. 5). Questions are addressed concerning artistic knowledge; how it is built and transferred and how it is developed and transformed. Since the author`s own professional knowledge is the object of the research, special perspectives on personal experience emerges that otherwise would be difficult to articulate. The thesis is also a contribution to the debate surrounding artistic research in the visual arts, focusing on the importance of reflection and analysis in art education and creative art work.

Kognitiewe aspekte van lesersreaksies op 30 Nagte in Amsterdam van Etienne van Heerden en Swartskaap van Odette Schoeman / Lea Margaretha MaraisMarais, Lea Margaretha January 2012 (has links)
Every reader will respond to and think in a different way about a book. They will have different interpretations of the book. It is not possible to say with scientific certainty in what way a reader will interpret a book. To address this issue, this study focuses on the reader response theory as explained by Iser and Jauss. However, the reader response theory is at present supported by research from the cognitive theory to narratology. This study attempts to understand how a reader reasons with regards to a certain text. A further aim is to understand why a specific reader will think about and interpret the text in the way he or she does. In this study the books 30 Nagte in Amsterdam (30 Nights in Amsterdam) by Etienne van Heerden and Swartskaap (Black Sheep) by Odette Schoeman is used to test the hypothesis. Qualitative research methods were used and the data was processed in different stages as is displayed in the addendum DVD.
Cognitive theory wants to explain how the reader will respond to the book as a whole, characters, events and the places and spaces represented in the novel. In this study, it was found that a reader's response will always be influenced by his/her background. Readers use their background either to make sense of the book and the story it tells or to make sense of what has happened in their own lives in order to accept and understand it.
On account of the results reached in the study it can be argued that readers should be taken into account when books are reviewed and discussed, because they are the ones that have to do the actual reading. Because of this finding, this study puts forward the suggestion that a review model is developed so that readers can make informed decisions as to which book will be best suited to them. / Thesis (M.A. (Afrikaans and Dutch))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012
