Equivalent geometric imperfections for the LTB-design of members with I-sections

For the stability assessment of members and structures according to EN 1993-1-1, the equivalent member method, the geometrical non-linear calculation with equivalent geometrical imperfections or the GMNIA analysis with geometrical imperfections and residual stresses can be used alternatively. The second possibility requires a corresponding model for the cross-section resistance. For the verification of lateral torsional buckling, bow imperfections e0 out-of-plane are defined, which lead in combination with the given loading in-plane and the geometrical non-linear analysis to bending moments Mz and torsion of the members. The amplitudes of the imperfections are highly dependent on the nature of the approach (e.g., scaling of the buckling shape, assumption of bow imperfections) and the verification method for the members. Within the framework of the scientific work supervised by the TU Dresden and TU Darmstadt, extensive parametric studies were conducted to calibrate imperfections for lateral torsional buckling based on the GMNIA. After determining the nature of imperfections and the design models for section resistance, this article presents results of these parametric studies and shows the calibration of imperfections for a standardisation proposal based on EN1993-1-1. The evaluation of the data in combination with the necessary simplifications for the design practice leads to appropriate definitions of imperfection values e0,LT and the necessary differentiations.

Performance Optima for Endoreversible Systems

Theoretical bounds for performance measures of thermodynamical systems are investigated under conditions of finite times and rates of processes using endoreversible models. These models consist of reversible operating sub-systems which exchange energy via generally irreversible interactions. Analytical and numerical calculations are performed to obtain performance optima and respective optimized process and design parameters for four model systems. A heat engine where the heat transfer between the working fluid and heat reservoirs is described by generalized, polytropic process is optimized for maximum work output. Thermal efficiencies, optimal values for temperatures and process times of the heat transfer processes are determined. A model of a generalized system suited to describe the operation of heat engines, refrigerators, and heat pumps is optimized with respect to thermal efficiency. Several examples illustrate how the results of the analysis are used to allocate financial resources to the heat exchanger inventory in an optimal way. A power-producing thermal system which exchanges heat with several heat reservoirs via irreversible heat transfer processes is analyzed to find the optimal contact times between the working fluid and each of the reservoirs. The piston motion of a Diesel engine is optimized to achieve maximum work for a given amount of fuel. The endoreversible model of the Diesel engine accounts for the temporal variations of the heat produced by the combustion process, the basic flow pattern within the engine's cylinder, the temperature dependence of the viscosity, thermal conductivity, and heat capacity of the working fluid and losses due to friction and heat leak through the cylinder walls. / Theoretische Grenzen für verschiedene Leistungsmerkmale von thermodynamischen Systemen werden unter der Bedingung endlicher Zeiten und Prozessraten im Rahmen endoreversibler Modelle untersucht. Diese Modelle bestehen aus reversiblen Subsystemen, welche über allgemein irreversible Wechselwirkungen Energie austauschen. Analytische und nummerische Berechnungen quantifizieren diese Grenzen und liefern optimale Prozess- und Konstruktionsparameter für vier Modellsysteme. Für eine auf maximale Ausgangsarbeit optimierte Wärmekraftmaschine, bei der die Wärme zwischen Arbeitsmedium und Wärmereservoirs während allgemeiner polytroper Zustandsänderungen des Arbeitsmediums übertragen wird, werden optimale Temperaturen und Zeiten für die Wärmeübertragungsprozesse sowie die thermischen Wirkungsgrade bestimmt. Für ein wirkungsgrad-optimiertes Modell eines verallgemeinerten thermischen Umwandlungssytems, das sowohl Wärmekraftmaschinen, Kühler und Wärmepumpen beschreibt, wird die optimale Verteilung von Investitionskosten auf die Wärmetauscher ermittelt und die Anwendung der allgemeingültigen Ergebnisse anhand mehrerer Beispiele demonstriert. Für eine Wärmekraftmaschine mit mehreren Wärmereservoirs wird bestimmt, welche der Wärmereservoirs wie lange kontaktiert werden müssen, um eine maximale Ausgangsarbeit zu erzielen. Für einen Dieselmotor wird die Kolbenbewegung so optimiert, dass bei gegebener Treibstoffmenge eine maximale Ausgangsarbeit erzielt wird. Das endoreversible Modell des Dieselmotors berücksichtigt die Temperaturabhängigkeit der Wärmekapazität, Wärmeleitfähigkeit und Viskosität des Arbeitsfluids, die Zeitabhängigkeit des Verbrennungsprozesses sowie Reibungs- und Wärmeverluste.

Triply-Resonant Cavity-Enhanced Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion

Die verlässliche Erzeugung einzelner Photonen mit wohldefinierten Eigenschaften in allen Freiheitsgraden ist entscheidend für die Entwicklung photonischer Quantentechnologien. Derzeit basieren die wichtigsten Einzelphotonenquellen auf dem Prozess der spontanen parameterischen Fluoreszenz (SPF), bei dem ein Pumpphoton in einem nichtlinearen Medium spontan in ein Paar aus Signal und Idlerphotonen zerfällt. Resonator-überhöhte SPF, also das Plazieren des nichtlinearen Mediums in einem optischen Resonator, ist ein weit verbreitetes Verfahren, um Einzelphotonenquellen mit erhöhter Helligkeit und angepassten spektralen Eigenschaften zu konstruieren. Das Anpassen der spektralen Eigenschaften durch gezielte Auswahl der Resonatoreigenschaften ist besonders für hybride Quantentechnologienvon Bedeutung, welche darauf abzielen, unterschiedliche Quntensysteme so zu kombinieren, dass sich deren Vorteile ergänzen. Diese Arbeit stellt eine umfassende theoretische und experimentelle Analyse der dreifach resonanten SPF vor. Das aus der Literatur bekannte theoretische Modell wird diesbezüglich verbessert, dass der Einfluss sämtlicher Eigenschaften des Resonators auf die wichtigen experimentellen Größen (z.B. die Erzeugungsrate) gezielt ausgewertet werden kann. Dieses verbesserte und hoch genaue Modell stellt eine wichtige Grundlage für die Entwicklung und Optimierung neuartiger Photonenpaarquellen dar. Im experimentellen Teil dieser Arbeit wird der Aufbau und die Charakterisierung einer dreifach resonanten Photonenpaarquellen präsentiert. Die neu entwickelte digitale Regelelektronik sowie ein hochstabiler, schmalbandiger Monochromator welcher auf monolitischen, polarisationsunabhängigen Fabry-Pérot Resonatoren basiert, werden vorgestellt. Indem diese temperaturstabilisierten Resonatoren als Spetrumanalysator verwendet werden, wird zum ersten Mal die Frequenzkammstruktur des Spektrums der erzeugten Signal- und Idlerphotonen nachgewiesen. Des Weiteren wird der Einfluss der Pumpresonanz auf die Korrelationsfunktion und die Zweiphotoneninterferenz von Signal- und Idlerphotonen simuliert und vermessen. Abschließend werden Experimente aus dem Bereich der hybriden Quantennetzwerke präsentiert, in welchen Quantenfrequenzkonversion verwendet wird um die erzeugten Signalphotonen in das Telekommunikationsband zu transferieren. Dabei wird nachgewiesen, dass das temporale Wellenpaket durch die Konversion nicht beeinflusst wird und aufgezeigt, wie Quantennetzwerke von kommerziellen Telekommunikationstechnologien profitieren können. / The consistent generation of single photons with well-defined properties in all degrees of freedom is crucial for the development of photonic quantum technologies. Today, the most prominent sources of single photons are based on the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) where a pump photon spontaneously decays into a pair of signal and idler photons inside a nonlinear medium. Cavity-enhanced SPDC, i.e., placing the nonlinear medium inside an optical cavity, is widely used to build photon-pair sources with increased brightness and tailored spectral properties. This spectral tailoring by selective adjustment of the cavity parameters is of particular importance for hybrid quantum technologies which seek to combine dissimilar quantum systems in a way that their advantages complement each other. This thesis provides a comprehensive theoretical and experimental analysis of triply-resonant cavity-enhanced SPDC. We improve the theoretical model found in the literature such that the influence of all resonator properties on the important experimental parameters (e.g., the generation rate) can be analyzed in detail. This convenient and highly accurate model of cavity-enhanced SPDC represents an important basis for the design and optimization of novel photonpair sources. The experimental part of this thesis presents the setup and characterization of a triply-resonant photon-pair source. We describe the digital control system used to operate this source over days without manual intervention, and we present a highly stable, narrow-linewidth monochromator based on cascaded, polarization-independent monolithic Fabry-Pérot cavities. Utilizing these temperature-stabilized cavities as a spectrum analyzer, we verify, for the first time, the frequency comb spectral structure of photons generated by cavity-enhanced SPDC. We further simulate and measure the impact of the pump resonance on the temporal wave-packets and the two-photon interference of signal and idler photons. Finally, we present a series of experiments in the context of hybrid quantum networks where we employ quantum frequency conversion (QFC) to transfer the generated signal photons into the telecommunication band. We verify the preservation of the temporal wave-packet upon QFC and highlight how quantum networks can benefit from advanced commercial telecommunication technologies.

Interoperability of Traffic Infrastructure Planning and Geospatial Information Systems

Building Information Modelling (BIM) as a Model-based design facilitates to investigate multiple solutions in the infrastructure planning process. The most important reason for implementing model-based design is to help designers and to increase communication between different design parties. It decentralizes and coordinates team collaboration and facilitates faster and lossless project data exchange and management across extended teams and external partners in project lifecycle. Infrastructure are fundamental facilities, services, and installations needed for the functioning of a community or society, such as transportation, roads, communication systems, water and power networks, as well as power plants. Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) as the digital representation of the world are systems for maintaining, managing, modelling, analyzing, and visualizing of the world data including infrastructure. High level infrastructure suits mostly facilitate to analyze the infrastructure design based on the international or user defined standards. Called regulation1-based design, this minimizes errors, reduces costly design conflicts, increases time savings and provides consistent project quality, yet mostly in standalone solutions. Tasks of infrastructure usually require both model based and regulation based design packages. Infrastructure tasks deal with cross-domain information. However, the corresponding data is split in several domain models. Besides infrastructure projects demand a lot of decision makings on governmental as well as on private level considering different data models. Therefore lossless flow of project data as well as documents like regulations across project team, stakeholders, governmental and private level is highly important. Yet infrastructure projects have largely been absent from product modelling discourses for a long time. Thus, as will be explained in chapter 2 interoperability is needed in infrastructure processes. Multimodel (MM) is one of the interoperability methods which enable heterogeneous data models from various domains get bundled together into a container keeping their original format. Existing interoperability methods including existing MM solutions can’t satisfactorily fulfill the typical demands of infrastructure information processes like dynamic data resources and a huge amount of inter model relations. Therefore chapter 3 concept of infrastructure information modelling investigates a method for loose and rule based coupling of exchangeable heterogeneous information spaces. This hypothesis is an extension for the existing MM to a rule-based Multimodel named extended Multimodel (eMM) with semantic rules – instead of static links. The semantic rules will be used to describe relations between data elements of various models dynamically in a link-database. Most of the confusion about geospatial data models arises from their diversity. In some of these data models spatial IDs are the basic identities of entities and in some other data models there are no IDs. That is why in the geospatial data, data structure is more important than data models. There are always spatial indexes that enable accessing to the geodata. The most important unification of data models involved in infrastructure projects is the spatiality. Explained in chapter 4 the method of infrastructure information modelling for interoperation in spatial domains generate interlinks through spatial identity of entities. Match finding through spatial links enables any kind of data models sharing spatial property get interlinked. Through such spatial links each entity receives the spatial information from other data models which is related to the target entity due to sharing equivalent spatial index. This information will be the virtual properties for the object. The thesis uses Nearest Neighborhood algorithm for spatial match finding and performs filtering and refining approaches. For the abstraction of the spatial matching results hierarchical filtering techniques are used for refining the virtual properties. These approaches focus on two main application areas which are product model and Level of Detail (LoD). For the eMM suggested in this thesis a rule based interoperability method between arbitrary data models of spatial domain has been developed. The implementation of this method enables transaction of data in spatial domains run loss less. The system architecture and the implementation which has been applied on the case study of this thesis namely infrastructure and geospatial data models are described in chapter 5.
