Received melodies : the new, old novel

Cooke, Stewart J. January 1987 (has links)
New, old novels, contemporary fictions that parody the forms, conventions, and devices of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century novels, form a significant and increasingly popular subclass of postmodernist fiction. Paradoxically combining realistic and metafictional conventions, these works establish an ironic dialogue with the past, employing yet simultaneously subverting traditional fictional techniques. / In this dissertation, I subject five new, old novels--John Barth's The Sot-Weed Factor and LETTERS, Erica Jong's Fanny, T. Coraghessan Boyle's Water Music, and John Fowles's The French Lieutenant's Woman--to a detailed analysis, which compares the parodic role of archaic devices in each contemporary novel to the serious use made of such devices in the past. I argue that new, old novels, by juxtaposing old and new world views, foreground the ontological concerns of fiction and suggest that literary representation is constitutive rather than imitative of reality. Their examination of the relationship between fiction and reality places them at the centre of contemporary concern.

Transgressing the Boundary- The Third Space in Salman Rushdie's East, West

Shih, En-huei Unknown Date (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to scrutinize how Salman Rushdie finds an outlet in the dichotomous world by means of the third space in East, West. Due to his diasporic identity, Rushdie decides to stay in an ambivalent space, avoiding being confined in specific ideology or discourse. As a result, using the strategy of the third space, which blurs political, linguistic, and literary boundaries, Rushdie shows how he earns agency in the dichotomous world. This thesis deals with three kinds of third space: diaspora space, linguistic space, and literary space. Each chapter unfolds how Rushdie uses the strategy of the third space to resist hegemonic discourse on human identity, the Standard English, and literary canons. Chapter II begins with an introduction of the diaspora space, by which diasporans are able to maintain their unique identities without being co-opted into a specific subject position. In Chapter III, both traditional cultural translation and the Standard English are questioned in terms of the linguistic third space. By means of the linguistic space, Rushdie challenges the monolithic cultural representation and pureness of the Standard English. The space also helps the distorted and misrecognized eastern culture articulate by appropriation of English. In Chapter IV, I will take metafictional parody and Bakhtin’s new zone of the novel to analyze how Rushdie creates a literary third space to lay bare the fabricated nature of writing and at the same time to combine social and literary critiques within the novel. To sum up, the three types of the third space in East, West not only reflect Rushdie’s refusal to taking sides but also bring dynamics to the dichotomous world.

This paper aims at studying Balada da Praia dos Cães (1982), by José Cardoso Pires, from the perspective of the detective novel parody, considering that the novel uses the typical procedures of this genre and then subverts it. Subversion is manifested mainly by diverting the focus of the narrative, which is no longer the puzzle solving, as it is in the classic detective story, but the construction of the text/inquest by the detective and the narrator, that is, the novel is not focused on finding out who, how and why the crime occurred, but to unravel the process of the narrative composition. In this sense, it can be said that the cardoseano novel engenders a metalinguistic reflection that unfolds on two levels: on the one hand, we are faced with a text that reveals its own mechanisms of construction, mainly for the recurrence and the subversion of the detective paradigm, and, on the other hand, we have a novel about the process by which the detective creates a narrative based on the proof, evidences, etc. Given this setting, the highlights are on the instances of the narrator and the author, which introduce in the novel a network of suspicions that destabilize the notions of truth and authority from the examination and questioning of many different speeches that are made present in the work of Cardoso Pires.

Bioculturalism, simulation and satire : the case of S1mOne

Krajewska, Anna Urszula 03 1900 (has links)
Text in English / This study offers a close look at Andrew Niccol’s (b 1964) satirical film S1mOne from a biocultural perspective emphasising the technological simulation of a Hollywood celebrity and the farce ensuing from her creation. The film is based on Niccol’s assumption that the hypertrophied culture into which he places his cultural object will be one in which human traits of sociality will be well advanced and the highly demanding genre of satire will be entertaining, persuasive, and on occasion punitive in its ridicule of Hollywood. The study makes a contribution to the idea that a cultural object/text operates as a rapid mechanism for propagating cognition — it shows how Niccol has adapted to less than optimal conditions in his world of Hollywood — in this case he parodies the role of the director of Hollywood films in the figure of Taransky. Cognition is understood as that series of mental processes which include attention, memory, learning (from mimicry as well as other forms), problem solving, ratiocination, and making decisions. Niccol relies on his audience's embodied capacities and skills of recognition, thinking, feeling, remembering, and accounting for his message to be understood. Niccol’s technical skill in editing his narrative to emphasise the satire of the narrative of Taransky and Simone is a critical part of the film’s success. Interpersonal and social propagation of cognition is achieved through reference to other cultural artefacts recalling a variety of similar ideas used in film and other visual creations. The cultural significance of the simulacrum, Simone, is that she is a vehicle for and a form of socially propagated cognition. The powerful imagistic impression of film helps to structure internalised cognitive artefacts in the viewers who are expected to reflect on their habits of viewing and thinking. When a film, artwork, poem or novel is analysed, then such a cultural object becomes a vehicle of and for propagating cognition. / Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology / D. Litt. et Phil.

Soury, Thomas 24 January 2013 (has links)
This thesis focuses on Les Fêtes de l’Hymen et de l’Amour, an heroic ballet written by Jean-Philippe Rameau with a libretto by Louis de Cahusac, created on March 15th, 1747 in Versailles for the Dauphin’s second wedding. This doctoral dissertation examines the extent to which Hilda Hilst‘s Fluxo-Floema exhibits an oscillation that both brings the modernist tradition, of which the author was an heiress, into light, while simultaneously calling it into question. In dialoguing with her readers and establishing a peculiar type of contact, Hilst makes use of ambivalent writing capable of touching opposite poles without, however, adhering to them. In Fluxo-Floema, a verbalization about the Brazilian dictatorial context takes place, which could favor, in the relationship between text and context, a dialogue with a type of text prevalent at that time. At the same time, however, the author‘s irony and unique humor would make themselves present by disturbing said verbalization and presenting narration as a paradoxical (im)possibility. In the five texts which compose the work, the focus on the character narrators — individuals who are faced with the act of narrating in ironic, or disturbingly defective sagas — problematizes, in the light both of the modernist heritage and the questioning of its utopias, the gaze towards artistic expression and the place in which the artist/creator is supposed to belong, especially in the late twentieth century, in an oppressive context. In this pendulating state (or the play in or with language) a performatic condition reigns, by allowing the observance, in between approximation and detachment, of the author‘s boastful speech and the ―biographical‖ elements as strategies that could seduce or even ―violate‖ her reading audience

A Palavra iluminada: A arca da aliança - paródia na poesia religiosa de Carlos Nejar / The illuminated: The ark of covenant parody in Carlos Nejar s religious poetry

Machado, Cínthia Marítz dos Santos Ferraz 11 March 2013 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 texto completo.pdf: 1003783 bytes, checksum: 3778c74afb684b7a8992a6d39ccd6939 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-03-11 / This dissertation aims to study the group of the poems The Ark of the Covenant , part of the work The livings , by Carlos Lejar (2011), a Brazilian contemporary poet and literary critic for the bias of studies about post-modern intertextuality. The Ark of the Covenant is a representative work of Brazilian view of modern poetry and this text investigates the discursive intersections between literature and Bible because it dialogues with the two texts. Therefore, it is possible to study about the poetical productivity and the post-modern parody. Furthermore, it is considerate a peculiar literary production because it was made and incorporated to the book during twenty years of poetic growing and maturing. The first work edition was published in 1979 and the 1995 s edition includes 300 new poems as the ones will be studied. Basing on a theoretical support that offers investigative and contemplative about the work possibilities, we intend examine how the poet redesign the religious discourse by transposing it to the literary discourse in the contemporaneity, even though the contemporary poetry study is far from the criticism. Thereby, this subject is interesting once it makes possible a research about how the world is recreated by God s salvation, in a certain faith language heretofore , can express itself in a poetical language?, or how, using poetical initiative, the artist of word recreates and resets a new mythical world order of holy scripture. Thus, researching this subject is motivating and relevant in Literary Studies, which aims to contribute for the amplitude of scientific literary research.

Humor v britských zvukových komediích v porovnání s českými filmovými příklady / The Sense of Humor in the British Sound Comedies in the Comparison with some Czech Film's Examples

MÁDLO, Gabriela January 2010 (has links)
This thesis targets the British sound film especially comedies from 1930{\crq}s till mid 1970{\crq}s because after this period there is greater TV production which took over feature film production. There is described the production of the main studios such as Gainsborough Pictures and Gaumont-British, Ealing Studios and Rank Organisation. I aim then to classify some film styles such as farce, slapstick, burlesque, screwball and romantic comedy, satire and parody. The last target is to find some famous Czech film makers or actors, who worked or are still involed within the British film production. There are name such as Herbert Lom and Anny Ondráková.

Théâtre et théâtralité dans le Satyricon : la quête d'un nouveau genre / Theatre and theatricality in the Satyrica : the quest for a new genre

Augier-Grimaud, Johana 29 November 2014 (has links)
The present study reexamines on the concept of theatricality often used about the Satyrica to try to specifyappearances and methods. For behind the visible simplicity of the term and the everyday acceptance of its use inrelation to this work, there hides a plurality of processes. The theatricality of the Satyrica takes on three forms. Itdefines itself spontaneously as the re-Use of codes particular to the funny dramatic genres from which Petroniusborrows situations, themes and linguistic processes. This first theatricality is complicated by its anchoring in adirected narrative universe, whose concerns it shares with those of the satiric genre. The falling back on theatricalelements outlines an excessive and inauthentic society, and thus sees itself filtered by the decadent world topos. And it is exactly because in the world of the Satyrica the traditional values are null and void that classicalliterature is obsolete. The way is then opens to the third theatricality, intrinsically connected to parody. It ismainly carried by the voice of the narrator, to whom the excessive practice of declamation entailed a systematicprojection to a fictional otherworld. The fracture existing from now on between reality and its perception has adouble consequence: on the one hand all the situations of everyday life can be reduced to representations ofliterary reference scenes ; on the other hand it deconstructs the traditional literature through clichés. Thistheatricality allows Petronius to renew literature and to lay the foundations for the novelistic genre.
