Mapping the uncertainties in internet-based clinical trials : a systematic review and qualitative study

Brice, Anne January 2017 (has links)
This thesis maps the growth of the use of internet technologies in randomised controlled trials in health care and public health, and explores the methodological and ethical issues that arise from their use from the perspective of researchers and participants. Online clinical trials are growing in number, and claim to offer benefits for researchers and participants, providing solutions to some of the inherent problems associated with traditional trials. However, little is known about how many internet-based trials have been conducted, what methodological research has been undertaken, or what impact the new technologies might have on researcher or participant experience. The thesis followed a step-by-step approach, using information science, research synthesis, and qualitative methods. The creation of a database of internet-based clinical trials established that they have grown rapidly in number, use internet technologies primarily to deliver an intervention, predominantly in behavioural, mental health, or life-style public health settings. A two-stage systematic review, comprising a descriptive map and a qualitative synthesis, established what is known about the methods, conduct or participant experience in internet-based trials. A qualitative primary study was then carried out, based on the findings of the review, to further explore the views, attitudes and experiences of researchers, participants and the public, into the motivations, benefits or barriers to taking part in internet-based clinical trials. Themes emerging from the research suggest complex interactions between design and technology, particularly in the area of participant characteristics and choice; convenience versus intrusion; impact of time and place; the pace of change and impact of societal changes in the use of technology. A range of ethical considerations emerged, including the nature of informed consent, ethical approval, and the need for a systematic approach to patient and public involvement. Recommendations are made to help inform and improve research practice in the digital age.

A Post Occupancy Evaluation of the Education Spaces at the Ngeruka Health Center in Rwanda: Can the Design of the Built Environment Effect Healing?

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: A post occupancy evaluation (POE) was conducted at the Ngeruka Health Center (NHC) in the Bugesera District of Rwanda. The POE was limited to the education spaces within the health center, its participants, and staff. A POE is a combination of methods both quantitative and qualitative to determine user satisfaction and whether the design intent of the built environment was met. In rural Rwanda where healthcare facilities are scarce and people become seriously ill from preventable diseases, help is needed. The smallest injuries become life threatening. Healthcare facilities and providers must develop approaches that stop these minor illnesses and diseases from costing further problems. The healthcare facility is a healing environment. Healing environments nurture health and provide a sense of safety and security. The Ngeruka facility has incorporated education spaces within their facility to teach the community ways to prevent minor health problems from becoming major ones. The research that was conducted at this healthcare facility sought to answer the main questions: Does the built environment of the NHC contribute to healing by engaging education program attendees to learn about preventing illness and disease and other health promotion strategies? In addition, can you measure healing effects of the built environment? The research took measurements of the built environment and combined them with user satisfaction questionnaires. Site observations and a participant engagement questionnaire were used to determine the amount of engagement the participants put forth into the education programs within the designated design space. Measuring engagement is a tool schools use to find out if their facilities are producing their intended results. This same thought process was incorporated into this research. The participants did prove to be engaged, but it is not definitive that the built environment was responsible. It was a combination of many factors. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Design 2015

Contribuições da ergonomia para projeto de engenharia: utilização de método baseado na observação participante. / Contributions of ergonomics for an engineering project: a method based on the participant observation.

Renato da Silveira e Silva 09 May 2013 (has links)
The aim of this work is to list what are the central variables of which depends on the comfort of a passenger in a vehicle of mass transportation over long distances, to carry out activities in a sitting position, such as reading, eating, sleeping, using notebook, etc., by a research to concepts that define ergonomic and practical ergonomics, as well as the construction of parameters of knowledge to serve as a basis for comfort solutions. This research originated from a demand from Empresa Brasileira de Aeronáutica S.A. (EMBRAER) to a group of universities, among which the USP, from what was a multidisciplinary group seeking to improve knowledge on multiple fronts related to aircraft development. One of these fronts has become a package of research in ergonomics, having been constituted groups of researchers with distinguished methodologies and goals, however complementary. By adding concepts of physiology and cognition, combined with studies into activities and routines that occur in cases at travel of means of transport in the sitting position, investigating the relationship between comfort and design of the interior of the vehicle, is expected to expand the little knowledge existing, until now, on the motivations present for taking on certain postures during travel. Starting from to understand the motives for these postures and movements, it would be possible understand which the needs of a passenger in terms of product design - \"inside the aircraft\" - to perform desired activities onboard with comfort and enjoyment. As to find such answers, must be placed in the context and put yourself in the place occupied by another, this research made use of the Ergonomic Analysis of Activity to penetrate in this world of subjectivity and as a practical protocol, the participant observation, to analyze the main activities undertaken by airline passengers during commercial flights. In this research, aimed to provide support to the most aspects of interaction among participants observers and the proposed activities were considered by participant observation protocol, showing that it is possible that the ergonomics contribute to building the knowledge of activities, allowing building products more suited to the needs of users, generating comfort.

Accelerating from Zero to Global Hero : A Multiple-Case Study of Accelerators promoting Participants to become Born Globals

Eberhardt, Björn, Hörst, Fabian January 2017 (has links)
In recent years, accelerators have gained increasingly attention due to their numerical growth, geographic dispersion, and growing numbers of participants they have worked with. Uber, Airbnb, Dropbox or Reddit – they have not only been participants of accelerators, but they can also be identified as ‘Born Globals’ according to the definition used throughout this thesis. Considering this fact and the lack of research in theory on the interrelation of both phenomena, accelerators and Born Global, it is interesting to dig deeper into the impact accelerators have on their respective participants’ global development. For this purpose, the authors conducted a multiple-case study to find answers to the question of what elements of accelerators promote participants to become Born Globals. This multiple-case study included semi-structured interviews with managers of four different cases of accelerators and three respective former participants as well as complementarily used secondary data in terms of company documents. Drawing from empirical evidence, it was found that the major elements of the examined accelerators fostering the participants’ development towards Born Globals can be summarized into five major categories: ’Application Process’, ’Interpersonal Connections’, ’Product & Coaching Methodologies’, ’Education’, and ‘Startup Community & Entrepreneurial Ecosystem’.
