Two past tenses in Comorian: morphological form and inherent meaning

Comorian is a Bantu language spoken on the Comoro Islands, a small archipelago between the East African coast and the northern tip of Madagascar. It is usually grouped within the Sabaki languages together with Swahili, Mwani, Elwana, Pokorno and Mijikenda (Nurse & Hinnebusch 1993: 4-19). Internally Comorian is divided into different dialects. In congruence with the four main islands, four dialects of Comorian are usually distinguished in the linguistic literature (Ahmed- Charnanga 1992:13; Nurse & Hinnebusch 1993: 18): Shingazija on the island of Ngazija (Grande Comore), Shimwali on Mwali (Moheli), Shinzwani on Nzwani (Anjouan) and Shimaore on Maore (Mayotte). These four dialects are arranged into two dialect groups (Shingazija/ Shimwali vs. Shinzwani/Shimaore) which are supposed to reflect peculiar linguistic similarities and differences. Although, in general, the greatest morphological differences between the Comorian dialects are within the TAM-markers, the past tense is morphologically quite homogeneous. Therefore dialectal differences do not play a dominant role for the subject of this paper. Two different past tense forms frequently used in everyday speech will be treated here: one morphological simple (one word) form and one compound (two word) form combining the auxiliary -ka (be) with the main verb. They will be discussed first from a formal point of view demonstrating the rules to create the morphosyntactical form. After this they are treated with regard to their semantic contents. The results presented here are based on a one year dialectological research on the Comoro Islands 1996-97. Interviews were made in 56 towns and villages on all four islands of the archipelago.

Writing Self, Narrating History: Textual Politics in Jamaica Kincaid's Novels

Abstract In this thesis, I attempt to examine Jamaica Kincaid¡¦s re-negotiation with the politics of power relations in her novels. Kncaid¡¦s novels, through the strategic deployment of autobiographical writing, redress the power dimension in the notions of self and history. The fact that Kincaid frames the field of power relations within the thematic recurrence of mother-daughter relations structures her novels in a way that conflates her personal stories with her group history. Moreover, such a structure emphatically registers the self-positioning act of Kincaid¡¦s writing as a strategy for survival. The first chapter explores how Kincaid mobilizes her self-writing as an act of political resistance. On the one hand, Kincaid opposes her writing which is delivered in the name of herself or her culture to the poststructuralist pronouncements of the general demise of a writing subject. On the other hand, Kincaid, through implicating the poststructuralist fracture of self in the protocol of decolonization, attempts to strategically inhabit in what Homi Bhabha calls the in-between space to define herself. The second chapter deals with the inscription of historical forces on the body. Foucault¡¦s genealogical unpacking of history in the body here helps to investigate how Kincaid¡¦s fictional alter egos bear and, more importantly, act out against the inscription of power. The third chapter focuses on the politics of Kincaid¡¦s autobiographical writing. At first, I unpack the relations between history and the politics of women¡¦s writing in the West Indies, and borrow the poststructuralist interrogation of Western historical knowledge to contradict the West¡¦s epistemological claims to West Indian history. And then I turn to the analysis of Kincaid¡¦s autobiographical writing, which, through its thematic deployment of mother-daughter relations, turns on the political empowerment in her strategic integration of her personal and collective history.

This essay deals with the various difficulties that can arise in conversations and meetings with parents and colleagues in the preschool world. The essay is based on two self-perceived stories that culminate in dilemmas that are difficult to assess, where our own actions come into question. The purpose of this essay is to gain a greater understanding and awareness of why we become insecure when our communication with others fails. Our research questions assist us in gaining an understanding that our own and others' behavior in meetings and conversations can be influenced by past experience, ourvalues and our emotions. This means, for example, that we must be aware that our values - ideal images, functions as both our guide and trip wires. We must also bear in mind that our ability to manage our own emotional reactions is  significant when it comes to facing our own and others' feelings. This essay also explores what kind of knowledge we may need in order to make conversations and meetings professional. Our writing is based from a hermeneutic perspective in which we interpret and reflect on the foundation  of our own experiences. The method we use is essay writing, a process that alternates between writing, reading and reflecting. We then connect our reflections to theories in psychology, philosophy and sociology to get an understanding of our complex dilemmas.  Some of the new theoretical knowledge that we gained comes from systems theory that has helped us to understand how we can create change in relationships by behaving differently. Conscious change in our own behavior is an important aspect in order to acquire new practical knowledge. In this way, we can become more professional in our conversations and meetings. / Denna essä handlar om olika svårigheter som kan uppstå vid samtal och möten med föräldrar respektive kollegor i förskolans värld. Essän utgår från två egenupplevda berättelser som mynnar ut i svårbedömda dilemman, där vi ifrågasätter vårt eget handlande. Syftet med vår essä är att få en ökad förståelse och medvetenhet om varför vi blir osäkra när vår kommunikation med andra misslyckas. Våra frågeställningar hjälper oss att få en förståelse för att vårt eget och andras beteenden i möten och samtal kan påverkas av de erfarenheter vi bär med oss, våra värderingar och våra känslor. Det innebär exempelvis att vi måste bli medvetna om att våra värderingar - idealbilder, fungerar både som våra vägvisare och snubbeltrådar, samt att vår förmåga att hantera egna känsloreaktioner har betydelse för att möta egna och andras känslor. Essän handlar även om vilken typ av kunskap som vi kan tänkas behöva för att samtal och möten ska bli professionella. Vårt skrivande utgår från ett hermeneutiskt perspektiv där vi tolkar och reflekterar utifrån våra egna erfarenheter. Metoden vi använder oss av är essäskrivande, en process som växlar mellan skrivande, läsande och reflekterande. Reflektionerna kopplar vi sedan till teorier inom psykologin, filosofin och sociologin för att få en förståelse för våra svårbedömda dilemman. Några av de nya teoretiska kunskaperna som vi fått kommer bland annat ifrån systemteorin, som har hjälpt oss att förstå hur vi kan åstadkomma förändringar i relationer genom att göra något annorlunda. Medvetna förändringar i vårt eget beteende är en viktig aspekt för att kunna erövra ny praktisk kunskap. På så sätt kan vi bli mer professionella i våra samtal och möten.

Emerging Hispanic English in the Southeast U.S.: Grammatical Variation in a Triethnic Community

<p>Abstract</p><p>This study investigates variable past tense marking patterns in an emerging variety of N.C. Hispanic English (n=44) spoken by language learners at three Length of Residency (LOR) groups in three schools in Durham, NC in terms of 1. lexical semantics (Andersen & Shirai 1996, Bayley 1999), 2. frequency (Guy & Erker 2012) 3. discourse structure (Bardovi-Harlig 1998) and 4. verb class and phonological environment (Wolfram 1985, Bayley 1994). Statistical results show significant effects of verb class, lexical aspect, and frequency and interacting effects of verb class and frequency (specifically, suppletives like copula are simultaneously highly frequent and highly phonetically salient). A subsample coded for the discourse factor shows some evidence for the correlation of copula and backgrounding function. A separate analysis of consonant cluster reduction patterns (CCR) demonstrates dialect acquisition of variable constraints (e.g. in terms of N.C. AAVE), namely phonological environment (_C > _V) and morphemic status (monomorpheme > bimorpheme). Pedagogical applications are discussed, including accurately identifying English Language Learners (ELLs) in the context of local/regional accommodation.</p> / Dissertation

This thesis represents a transdisciplinary study based on qualitative research and critical analysis of oral history interviews and the personal narratives of sixty-seven Australian-born Chinese. It uses cultural studies approaches to investigate the diverse ways Chineseness becomes inscribed into the lives of Australian-born Chinese. It investigates diverse ways Chineseness becomes inscribed into the lives of Australian-born Chinese within three social and cultural spaces Australian-born Chinese inhabit. These are the family, mainstream Australian society and Chinese diasporic spaces located in China and Australia. In examining these three social and cultural spaces, this study seeks to demonstrate that Chineseness represents an inescapable ‘reality’ Australian-born Chinese are compelled to confront in their everyday lives. This ‘reality’ exists despite rights of birth, generational longevity, and strong national and cultural identities and identifications grounded in Australia, and whether or not Australian-born Chinese willingly choose to identify as ‘Chinese’. Nevertheless, despite the limits of Chineseness Australian-born Chinese experience in their lives, this study demonstrates that Australian-born Chinese are individual agents who devise a range of strategies and tactics which empower them to negotiate Chineseness in relevant and meaningful ways of their own choosing.
