Pignatari, Rosa Malena. January 2009 (has links)
Abstract: On the verge of completing 100 years in 2010, Pentecostalism in Brazil turns out to be a complex, multifaceted, phenomenon, which challenges communication, media entrepreneurs, sociologists, preachers, believers, atheists and social communication reserachers, once nowadays new religious experiences are moved by the adoption of the mediatic culture. There are now widely shown experiences on broadcasts such as "Show da Fé" (The show of faith) hosted by R. R. Soares, the leader of "Igreja Internacional da Graça de Deus" (International Church of the Grace of God), which is the religious institution being this study's main topic. Having in mind the belief that social phenomenons are not uniform and also being aware that it is not possible to believe that the religious products are free from contradiction, the research opted to look for understanding the religious mediatic visibility through the thread of social relationships of those who adopt "The show of faith". It means the research analyses the religious communication form a different angle, distinct from the linear view of message transmission, understanding that sort of communication as the process mediated by cultural and social practices which are built everyday, where the constitution of subjectivity is a way of analyzing the ways through which the individuals interact with the message. Thus, the research- a study on reception following the research line of the socio-cultural meditiation - allowed, among other aspects, to notice in the uses and habits of television consumerism the dialect named by Martin-Barbero as wish/place of social differentiation and ritual process objectification consumerism, evidencing that the group of belonging exerts influence for the re-seignification of the follower's wish. It was possible to identify that the key for the broadcast genre of Show da Fé (The show of faith) is the power... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

In search of an Ecumenical Pentecostal Ecclesiology: a critical analysis of Kӓrkkӓinen’s Ecclesiology

Miti, Bambo January 2020 (has links)
Pentecostalism has always been regarded as a movement that does not have all the ecclesiastical qualities that qualify it to be called a fully-fledged tradition alongside other major streams of Protestantism. Contrary to popular theologies that undermine the great role that the Pentecostal tradition can play in the global church, modern Pentecostal theologies agree that most of the misconceptions and assumption are misplaced because the Pentecostal tradition is a rich tradition with vital elements and symbols necessary to advance the ecumenical goal of unity and reconciliation. Based on this perception that Pentecostal ecclesiology is ecumenical, this research critically analyses Pentecostal ecclesiology as portrayed by Kärkkäinen in order to determine its ecumenicity or relevance to the ecumenical goals of unity, tolerance and reconciliation. This research confronts the paternalistic assumptions and misconception that regard Pentecostalism as simply a superstitious and naive sect which is only relevant to the lower class by bringing out the different elements and symbols within the tradition that are vital for the success and development of the global church in a modern global context. Some of the critical elements and symbols within the Pentecostal tradition that are explored within this study include÷ unity in diversity, the mission nature of the church, experiences of the Spirit as portrayed in its Pneumatological Christology and Soteriology, its rapid adaptation to new global south contexts and critical elements of inclusivity and plurality as portrayed in the foundations of the tradition. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology

Political Pentecostalism in Brazil : A dog-whistle rhetoric analysis in religious and political leadership

Rinaldi Bittencourt, Gabriela January 2024 (has links)
The present work explores the rhetorical elements of Christian nationalism in Brazil through a rhetoric dog-whistle analysis. The objective of this work is to understand how a multivocal appeal in the discourse of Pentecostalist political leaders can unite two distinct groups, such as evangelicals and the conservative right through the same rhetoric. The work is built on an analysis of the strategic rhetoric of speeches and posts on social media by three Pentecostal pastors who at the same time hold a high elective political position. The focus of this analysis is Bethany Albertson's theory of dog-whistle politics through thematic content analysis. The results show that there are four themes that stand out in this strategic rhetoric, which consist of "defense of Israel," "defense of the traditional family," "patriotism," and "freedom of expression." This set of themes strengthens the multivocal appeal of religious and political leaders, matching the narrative of Christian nationalism.

The doctrine of subsequence in the pentecostal and neo-pentecostal movements

Elkington, Robert Lionel 01 1900 (has links)
The Pentecostal and Neo-Pentecostal movements propose a subsequent to salvation Spirit baptism. This baptism is viewed as an experience in which the Spirit either confers or awakens gifts within the life of the believer. The thesis ofthis paper is that Spirit baptism occurs at conversion. Spirit filling on the other hand is one of many metaphors to describe the work of the eschatological Spirit subsequent to salvation. This distinguishing of Spirit baptism and Spirit filling is different to the Pentecostal and Neo-Pentecostal idea that Spirit baptism and Spirit filling are synonymous experiences that occur at some point subsequent to salvation. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / Th.

Roelfse, Benjamin Charles 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MDiv (Practical Theology and Missiology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / The church today, and esspecially the Reformed tradistion find itself in a situation where there is a lot of tension regarding his identity, as a Reformed Church. The post-modern world we live in set a lot of challenges regarding our faith and how we as christains should deal with our embodyment as reformed christians The church and specificaly the Dutch Reformed family are facing daily the lost of a lot off members to the fundamentalistic movements. Members whom are seekers in their fath and whom were in some way or another been challenged by a desire to take their faith to a higher level of experience, which in their lives cannot get satisfaction any more in the reformed tradition. In this thesis I will try to destinquist the balance between Reformed tradistion and Pentecostalism. The thesis will try to embodied the identity of the Reformed tradision by give an overview , look into the questions regarding reformed tradition, what does it mean to be Reformed and proud and also what Reformed use of scripture entails. Allthough it is not the first time that questions like this has been raised, because reformed in the tradition means , to change contantaniously. Pentecostalism on the other side does have a long history regarding orgin and was not just an "appearnce" in the church. The apostle Paul in the early days of the church was in a certain sence very specific obout the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the space for exploration as set out in "1 Korinthians 12." Over the years many enthusiastic movements appeared which led to a total misunderstanding of what Pauls understanding was regarding pentecotalism. Regarding Pentacostalism, and the judging of the movement , the church will have to view their concerns very strongly in terms of the following, appreciation, make accesment regarding their weakness, thoughtfullness and their plan of action. Then the paradigm shifts, ecclesiasticly and liturgical deepening are essential factors in the whole enlightenment towards a more adopting mode. To change does not necesarilly mean to throw all the norms and vallues over board, but to do so in a responsible way. The worship service become in that matter the focal point of attention, including all the elements within the service , searching for ways to improve , ad or adapt. What the worship service is and are suppose to be , a trully place where God allone are been worship and where the Holy Spirittransformes people into living witnesses. The thesis conclude with a usefull set off guidelines according to Thomas Long in his book Beyond the worship wars where he challenge the church to a more transforming way of being church of God.

Expendable Creation: Classical Pentecostalism and Environmental Disregard

Goins, Jeffrey P. (Jeffrey Paul) 12 1900 (has links)
Whereas the ecological crisis has elicited a response from many quarters of American Christianity, classical (or denominational) Pentecostals have expressed almost no concern about environmental problems. The reasons for their disregard of the environment lie in the Pentecostal worldview which finds expression in their: (1) tradition; (2) view of human and natural history; (3) common theological beliefs; and (4) scriptural interpretation. All these aspects of Pentecostalism emphasize and value the supernatural--conversely viewing nature as subordinate, dependent and temporary. Therefore, the ecocrisis is not problematic because, for Pentecostals, the natural environment is: of only relative value; must serve the divine plan; and will soon be destroyed and replaced. Furthermore, Pentecostals are likely to continue their environmental disregard, since the supernaturalism which spawns it is key to Pentecostal identity.

Ruiz, Nidia 03 1900 (has links)
This thesis concerns the religious hybridities between Catholicism and Pentecostalism in two congregations in Montreal. Faced with the gaps in the research regarding the influence of Catholicism on Neopentecostalism, we have compared certain strategies of a multi-ethnic Charismatic Neopentecostal Church with the strategies of a Latin American Catholic Charismatic community, in order to explain how these hybridities manifest in the congregations. Some hybridities are found in the adaptation of these communities to the Quebec context and in the adaptation of the Gospel and the religious practices that mark the process of integration of immigrants into the congregations and the host society. The charismatic communities become epicenters of ethnic groupings in which we can observe continuities, transformations and cultural innovations. In my field work in these two groups, I have found evidence regarding the influence of Catholicism on the Neopentecostalism and vice versa, as well as syncretic interpenetrations.

L'Église à l'épreuve du Pentecôtisme : une expérience religieuse à l'île de la Réunion / Pentecostalism puts the church to the test : a religious experience in Reunion Island

Aubourg, Valérie 25 March 2011 (has links)
In Reunion Island, pentecostal and charismatic movements have been developing for forty years and their emotional aspect plays a pivotal role in their power of attraction. Encouraging tangible evidence of God’s actions at the expense of dogmas, they contribute to the imprecision of beliefs and the dispersion of religious itineraries, lead to an increase in individualism and encourage a tendency to scission in the Church. Because of all this, they put the church to the test. Nevertheless, an in-depth analysis of these movements in Creole society leads us to question the erosion of institutions, traditions and mediations it relies on. Organising a field survey and conducting interviews has made it possible to highlight several factors which seem to inspire religious experience of an emotional kind.- First, the socio-historical situation of the island, and the religious dynamics that have contributed to the formation of competing pentecostal and charismatic groups which are too different to be treated as part of the same environment.- Then, the groups joined by the faithful, which codify their practices and create their religious « virtuosity »- Finally time, because of which individuals itineraries show different phases of varying intensity. So, religious experience is far from being synonymous exclusively with excitement, immediacy and malleability. Control, socialization and transmission are also important part of it. This study conducted in Reunion Island is at the very heart of this dialectic.
