Abstract: Thesis Structuring: The present study opted for the "Scandinavian Model" which is called the "Alternative Model" in the Post-Graduation Program in Child and Adolescent Health from the Medical Sciences College of University of Campinas (UNICAMP). Therefore, the thesis was compounded by introduction, objective, chapters (I and II) and general conclusion. The introduction presented the main studies on bone mass and the evaluation technique of this tissue by the use of phalanx ultrasound. The articles that were written according to the specific norms of each journal to which they were submitted to are found on chapters I and II. On the general conclusion the main conclusions of both articles were presented. The bibliographical references were presented at the end of each chapter and of the thesis. Further, the main information about the structuring of both chapters of the thesis was presented. Objective: to evaluate the bone quantity and quality, by phalanxes ultrasound, in healthy, black and white, schoolchildren, in relation to the socioeconomic level and body composition, and still, to compare the bone quantity to European references. Materials and Methods: 1,356 healthy schoolchildren from different socioeconomic level participated on this study, divided into black and white with ages from six to eleven years old, from both genders. The weight and height were evaluated by anthropometric methods as well as the percentage of fat, fat mass, lean mass and body mass index, which was transformed in score z for the age, were calculated. To define the normality deviations it was adopted, as cut points, values below -2 and above +2 from the values of the score z. For the procedure of collecting the individual data of the bone quantity parameter (AD-SoS = Amplitude Dependent of Speed Sound) and bone quality (UBPI = Ultrasound Bone Profile Index) it was used the ultrasound on the phalanxes with the 3rd generation DBM Sonic® BP, IGEA device. The average values of AD-SoS from this study were compared to five European references that presented normative values for children as well as for adolescents. The descriptive analysis of the data was realized, and for the age, genders and skin colors comparison with the variables AD-SoS and UBPI, the variance analysis was used (ANOVA - two way) followed by the test of multiple comparisons of Tukey (p<0,05). The Mann-Whitney, qui-squared, correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression analysis with 5% significance were also applied. For the comparison of AD-SoS of the schoolchildren, from both genders and skin colors in relation to the references, the t Student, that compares two averages, being one of them the reference, was chosen. Results: the black schoolchildren predominated on the low socio-economic levels. The black boys presented higher values for weight and height, while the black girls for lean mass, in relation to white schoolchildren from the same age and gender. It was observed a crescent variation from six to eleven years of age for both genders and color of skin in the averages of AD-SoS. The white schoolchildren presented higher values of AD-SoS and UBPI in relation to the black ones. The anthropometric variables, gender and socio-economic level explained only 17 and 11% of the variability of AD-SoS and UBPI, respectively. Comparing the AD-SoS from this study to the five European references, it was observed for both genders and colors of skin lower values than to the Polish study and similar to the other studies for the girls, while the boys presented similar values to the Italian studies and lower than the Spanish ones. This way, the present study, presented higher bone mass, evaluated by phalanxes ultrasound, in white schoolchildren than in black ones. The bone quantity of the schoolchildren from this study rose from the six to the eleven years of age for both genders and colors of skin. The bone quantity found in Brazilian children from both genders and colors of skin was lower in relation to the Polish, similar to the Italians; and in relation to the Spanish study, the genders didn't present uniformities, being the girls similar and the boys with lower values.

Abstract: Structure of the thesis: In this study we opted for the "Scandinavian Model", which is called "Alternative Model" in the Post-Graduate Program of Child and Adolescent Health of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, at State University of Campinas (FCM - UNICAMP). Thus, the thesis was composed of general introduction, objectives, chapters (1 and 2) and general conclusion. The general introduction approached aspects on bone mass and body composition as well as the major studies in the area. Chapters 1 and 2 contain the articles formatted according to the specific rules of the journals to which they were submitted. In general conclusion we presented the main conclusions of the two articles. References were presented at the end of each chapter and of the thesis. Next, we present the main information that refers to the structuring of the two chapters of the thesis. Objectives: The objectives of this study were: (1) to evaluate changes in bone density for age, weight, height, body mass index, socioeconomic status, and pubertal stage in Brazilian students from low socioeconomic status and (2) to evaluate the influence of body composition on the bone mass in healthy students of low socioeconomic status. Materials and Methods: The study included 270 healthy students of low socioeconomic status, of both genders aged 7 and 19 years. Anthropometric methods, weight and height, were obtained to calculate the body mass index (BMI), fat mass, fat mass index and percentage body fat, waist and hip circumferences were also obtained and the waist-hip ratio was calculated. The bone quantity (Amplitude Dependent Speed Sound, AD-SoS) was evaluated by means of signal transmission of ultrasound at the phalanges using the third generation of DBM Sonic BP device (Igea, Carpi, Italy). To calculate the z score of the AD-SoS, the mean and standard deviation for age and gender according to data on the device software were used. A descriptive analysis of the data was performed, followed by the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests, correlation coefficient and Spearman's analysis of stepwise linear regression with a AD-SoS among younger boys and older girls. However, z scores of AD-SoS was around zero in the second assessment for all ages and both genders. In both genders AD-SoS was significantly correlated with age, weight and height, and BMI after one year in boys and girls in both evaluations. Age was the only predictor among boys in both evaluations. Among girls, age, height, pubertal stage and BMI were predictors in the first evaluation, and age, pubertal stage and BMI in the second. A cross-sectional study showed that girls had higher bone mass than boys with advancing age and pubertal stage. In both sexes, bone mass was significantly correlated with age, weight, height, BMI, waist circumference and hip. Correlation with fat mass, fat mass index and percentage of body fat was observed only in girls, and there was negative correlation with waist -hip in both genders. Age and height were predictors for boys and age, pubertal stage and fat mass index predictors for girls. Conclusion: Despite the increase in weight, height and advancement of pubertal stage, after a year of monitoring there was not a proportional gain of bone mass in this group of Brazilian students from low socioeconomic level; and girls tended to have higher body fat and higher bone density compared with boys, with a contribution of adiposity on bone density for the group of girls. significance of 5%. Results: In a longitudinal study, we observed that boys and girls showed a significant gain in overall weight, height and BMI, but with reduced. / Doutorado / Saude da Criança e do Adolescente / Doutor em Ciências

A morphometric analysis of the phalanges and a fragmentary first metatarsal from the Drimolen hominin site, South Africa.

Vernon, Danielle Sarah 18 July 2013 (has links)
M.Phil. (Anthropology) / The primary aim of this study was to undertake the description and analysis of the manual and pedal hominin phalanges from Drimolen, South Africa. The specimens were contextualized by examining their counterparts in a series of extant and extinct specimens. As Drimolen preserves the remains of both Paranthropus robustus and early Homo, it provides an opportunity to contribute to our understanding of morphological variation and differences between these taxa, as well as providing an important first step in conceptualizing their evolutionary history and palaeobiology. The first section focused on the manual and pedal phalanges, while the second focused exclusively on the first metatarsal. Numerous studies have analyzed Plio-Pleistocene manual and pedal phalanges to evaluate tool-related behaviours and locomotion in early hominins. In this dissertation nine phalanges were described and analyzed for the first time. The manual specimens consist of one proximal (DNH 9), two proximal pollical (DNH 116 and DNH 119), four intermediates (DNH 48, DNH 63, DNH 65 and DNH 66) and one distal pollical phalanx (DNH 13). There is currently only one pedal proximal phalanx (DNH 117). As at Swartkrans, assignment of postcranial elements was hampered by the fact that two hominin species have been found at the site, namely Paranthropus robustus and early Homo. To analyze the specimens, multivariate statistics (PCA and CVA) were conducted on the specimens using raw and size-adjusted data. This was done within the context of a large extinct and extant dataset to compare size and shape data. In general, PCA and CVA yielded similar results but only the raw data was useful in discriminating between taxa. There was poor discrimination in the analyses based upon size-adjusted data because of the huge degree of overlap between fossil and extant taxa. Consequently, results were not diagnostic and it wasn’t possible to assign specimens confidently to either Paranthropus or Homo. This was exacerbated by the isolated nature of the remains, the presence of two hominin taxa and taxonomic uncertainties of several Swartkrans phalanges. Despite these difficulties, these specimens do provide insight into the degree of morphological variation present in the phalanges from the Plio-Pleistocene of South Africa. The second section described the fragmentary first metatarsal and quantified it by using laser scanning and calculating the curvature of the proximal articular surface. Univariate statistics were then calculated in order to examine the degree of curvature between each of the extant taxa and whether these differences were statistically significant. Finally, a simple bivariate plot was generated using the curvature results which showed that this joint surface was most curved in chimpanzees and western gorillas, moderately curved in eastern gorillas, and flattened in modern humans and baboons. Highly curved joint surfaces in this region suggest a more mobile hallux, whereas flattened surfaces suggest reduced joint mobility. The fossil specimens SK 1813, STW 573, STW 595 and OH-8 all grouped closely with modern humans; A.L. 333-54 and SKX 5017 grouped with chimpanzees, while DNH 115 grouped with eastern gorillas. Overall, these results indicate that SKX 5017 was the most curved of the South African specimens and is attributed to Paranthropus (Susman, 1988). It grouped closely with DNH 115 which suggested that climbing activities may have continued to play an important role in the behavioral repertoire of these individuals during the Plio-Pleistocene.

Lindboe, Karin Kaldhussæter January 2018 (has links)
The subject of this study is the exploitation of marrow in European elk (Alces alces), at two Stone Age settlements in northern Sweden. The bone material presented in this study originate from Bellsås in Jämtland county, and Bastuloken in Västernorrland county. Only bones containing white marrow have been analysed: the mandibula, the long bones, and the first and second phalanges. This study aims to understand if, and how the extraction and use of bone marrow varied between the two sites. Is there a difference in which elements that were chosen for exploitation between the two sites? What can differences in the choice of elements for marrow extraction tell us about changes in local preferences and alterations in practises over time? Can the stone material from the two sites in combination with the bones give any clue to how the localities were used? The results of this study shows that the difference in marrow exploitation between the two sites lies mainly in the choice to exploit phalanges as a source for marrow at Bastuloken but not at Bellsås. The reasons for this are discussed and the conclusion is that cultural choices or preferences, rather than nutritional stress, are the cause for the choice to use these elements as a source for marrow. The bone and stone material in combination show that the two localities have been used in different ways.

Gåtfulla björnen i graven : En studie av björnklor i järnåldersgravar från Gotland / Enigmatic bear in the grave : A study of bear claws in Iron Age graves from Gotland

Jordahl, Jane January 2023 (has links)
Uppsatsen undersöker björnklor upptäckta i järnåldersgravar (ca 500 e.Kr. / This paper examines bear claws discovered in Iron Age graves (c. 500 AD – 1100 AD) in Gotland, Sweden. The brown bear has never existed as a part in the island's fauna, meaning that every bear claw discovered is a trace of the ancient exchange between this island and the surrounding mainlands. Previous research on the subject has mostly consisted of compilations of the number of grave contexts with bear claws. However, to further interpret bear claws from each burial context and to discuss the possible purpose behind deposition in the grave, claws need to be assessed for associated paws. A common explanation is that bear claws derives from fur. However, the theory of fur does not work for all discovered claws. Therefore, the paper aims to create a metric method through measurements of reference material of bear claws. The idea is that the measurement method could be used to examineand interpret the archaeological bear claws. The interpretation of the claws is an important part of the understanding of how animal resources were used in prehistoric times.

SILVA, Luiz Henrique da 23 February 2012 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-07-29T15:07:37Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Luiz Henrique da Silva.pdf: 1489103 bytes, checksum: ac4824aab7dfcd361175c802b550531d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-02-23 / Radiographic and computed tomography (CT) findings may contribute to the diagnosis and prognosis of diseases based on knowledge of digits morphometric reference values. Some breeds of cattle and buffaloes still require determinations of these values for the digits. Thus, the objective with this research was to compare and correlate the condyles and phalanges, on radiographic images, and measurements of internal and external structures of the hoof, using computed tomography, to buffaloes and cattle breeds Nelore, Curraleira and Pantaneira. After submission and approval of the project by the Ethics Committee in Research of UFG, Protocol No. 090/2011, 114 were used digits of the locomotor members cattle and buffaloes without lameness in foot. Members were collected from an abattoir under Federal Inspection, disarticulated joints carpal/metacarpal and tarsal/metatarsal and by lot were used only thoracic and left pelvic limbs. For radiographic placements used were dorso-palmar/plantar and members of the CT scans were positioned with the palmar or plantar portion of the table CT scanner and the images obtained by transverse sections. From the radiographic images was measured the length of the condyles, proximal, middle and distal phalanges and the entire condyle and digit together. CT measurements were carried out: thickness of the sole; distance between the inner wall of the sole the distal phalanx; distance between the inner wall of the hoof the distal phalanx; thickness of the wall hoof; base length of the distal phalanx; side length of the distal phalanx; height of the distal phalanx, length of the sole; length of the dorsal hoof wall; heel depth, angle between the lengths of the wall and the sole length and angle between the side and base of the distal phalanx. To compare the means between the races was used the Tukey test (p<0.05). The Pearson correlation was performed between the weight and all measurements and multivariate analysis tested the similarity of the groups. The results of radiographic verified for the buffaloes, the greater length of the proximal phalanx in forelimbs (Lateral: 6.28 ± 0.13; Medial: 6.31 ± 0.18) and the hindlimbs (Lateral: 6.48 ± 0.15; Medial: 6.38 ± 0.17). The lengths of these phalanges did not differ (p> 0.05) between the Pantaneiro and Curraleiro digits in the forelimbs. In CT scans measures the length of the base (Lateral5.58 ± 0.18; Medial 6.52 ± 0.32 / Lateral:5.39 ± 0.09; Medial:6.43 ± 0.18) length lateral (Lateral:5.44 ± 0.21; Medial:6.02 ± 0.24 / and Lateral:5.3 ± 0.17; Medial:6.07 ± 0.27) and height (Lateral: 3 , 98 ± 0.16 and Medial: 4.15 ± 0.12 / Lateral:3.93 ± 0.11; Medial:4.01 ± 0.12) of the distal phalanx, had the highest measured in buffalo and did not differ (p> 0.05) between breeds of cattle. Thus, we conclude that the buffaloes have larger dimensions of the condyles and phalanges. In tomographic imaging, measures the hoof were similar between Nelore and Curraleiro in forelimb and between Curraleiro and Pantaneiro in the hindlimb.
