Enhancing the professional dignity of midwives in an academic tertiary hospital

Introduction and background: The professional dignity of midwives is determined by their own perspectives of the contribution that they make to the optimal care of patients, the respect that they get from other members of the health team and the support that hospital management gives them. When midwives are not treated with respect and their professional competencies are not recognised, their professional dignity is violated. Aim of the study: The study aims to explore and describe how the professional dignity of midwives in the selected hospital can be enhanced. Methodology: A descriptive phenomenological research design was used. In-depth interviews were conducted once informed consent was obtained with purposively selected participants until data saturation occurred. At least 15 midwives from the antenatal, postnatal and delivery rooms of the selected hospital were interviewed. The interviews were audio-recorded with the permission of the participants and analysed through the method of Giorgi (1997:247). The essence of the phenomenon and the supporting constituents (themes) were identified. The essence and constituents will be described and thereafter the constituents will be discussed. Applicable literature was used to integrate the findings in the knowledge base of the phenomenon. Findings: The purpose of the research study was to explore how the professional dignity of midwives in the selected hospital can be enhanced. The essence (meaning) of the participants’ experiences was disclosed as: To dignify midwives in an academic tertiary hospital. The essence is supported by the following constituents (meaning units): ‘to acknowledge the capabilities of midwives’, ‘to appreciate interventions of midwives’, ‘to perceive midwives as equal health team members’, ‘to invest in midwives’, ‘to enhance collegiality’, ‘to be cared for by management’ and ‘to create conducive environments’. / Dissertation (MCur)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Nursing Science / MCur / Unrestricted

Voices of My Elders: Forgotten Place, Invisible People - A Phenomenological Exploration of the Experiences of African Americans Living in the Rural Southern Black Belt During the Jim Crow Era

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The systemic racism imposed on the lives and education aspiration of six of my elders who stayed in the racist South during the ferociously deleterious era of Jim Crow is the focus of this phenomenological critical race study. These stories centered the voices of my elders as powerful weapons to expose white supremacy and the psychophysiological trauma imposed upon my elders. These stories were about the lives, lived experiences, and educational trials and triumphs of six of my Brown and Black hue American elders whose ancestry was born out of slavery and delivered into the vicious Jim Crow era. My work was grounded in Phenomenological Critical Race Theory. Critical Race Theory validates my elders’ narratives and their narratives fortify the tenets of CRT. For you see, racism was an everyday phenomenon my elders experienced as residents of rural Southern America. My elders came to understand “what” they were, Black, by understanding “who” they were not, White. Furthermore, this qualitative phenomenological critical race study was guided by three inquiries, what experiences have you had with Jim Crow; how or in what ways did your experiences with Jim Crow affect your education; and how or in what ways did your experience with Jim Crow affect your life? These inquiries produced four intersecting themes, 1) the survival of racism as part of everyday life, 2) economic exploitation of Black labor, 3) denial of equitable education, and 4) the sociopolitical construction of racial identity, and three significant findings, racist place, sociopolitical oppression, and inequitable education.

It does not seek to define religious behaviour but how the meanings of such behaviour take place inside the psychological structure. Psychologically speaking, religion can either trigger or block human development. For a science that seeks to understand man as a whole, to exclude the religious dimension of the human being from the psychological thinking is not to evaluate and understand the real influence of the religious development in mental functioning, in health and in psychological treatment. In this aspect, the aim of this study was to analyse phenomenologically the religious experience of Catholics in their relationship with personal development. For this, a qualitative approach was used, and, through statements collected in non-directive active interviews, phenomological analyses were made. Four people over 18 were interviewed. They were indicated by religious leaders and considered by them practicing Catholics . The result of the study showed that the participants religious experience is related to personal development. Such a relationship occurs in subjective and specific changes that resulted into the change of the behaviour of the subjects, who reported an improvement in life quality. Thus, we can understand that the religious experience gave these subjects a personal development. / A tarefa da Psicologia da Religi?o no ?mbito das ci?ncias humanas ? estudar os aspectos psicol?gicos relacionados ? experi?ncia religiosa humana Ela n?o procura definir o que ? a conduta religiosa, mas sim como os significados desta conduta se d?o no interior da estrutura psicol?gica. Psicologicamente, a religi?o pode ser uma mola propulsora ou bloqueadora do desenvolvimento humano. Para uma ci?ncia que procura entender o homem na sua totalidade, excluir do pensar psicol?gico a dimens?o religiosa do ser humano, ? deixar de avaliar e entender a real influ?ncia do desenvolvimento religioso no funcionamento mental, na sa?de e no tratamento psicol?gico. Neste sentido, o objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar, fenomenologicamente, a experi?ncia religiosa de cat?licos em sua rela??o com o desenvolvimento pessoal. Para isso, foi utilizada uma abordagem qualitativa e, atrav?s de depoimentos colhidos em entrevistas n?o diretivas ativas, realizou-se an?lises fenomenol?gicas. Foram entrevistadas quatro pessoas, maiores de 18 anos, indicadas por l?deres religiosos e consideradas, por estes l?deres, cat?licas praticantes envolvidas . O resultado deste estudo mostrou que a experi?ncia religiosa dos participantes est? relacionada com o desenvolvimento pessoal. Esta rela??o ocorre num sentido de mudan?as subjetivas, particulares e singulares que trouxeram como conseq??ncia, mudan?as no comportamento dos entrevistados, os quais relataram sentir uma melhora na qualidade de vida. Spiritual in Islamic calligraphy : a phenomenological approach to the contemporary Turkish calligraphic tradition

The aim of this thesis is to highlight the relevance of the spiritual dimension of Islamic calligraphy, focusing on the Turkish contemporary calligraphic tradition. Academic literature in the field has been dominated by the tendency to focus on the objects produced by artists, neglecting their personal experience and understanding of the art. Using a phenomenological perspective, I give voice to calligraphers I met in Istanbul and Konya, letting emerge their views on issues related to the relationship between art, religion and spirituality. I explore several themes that have arisen from the interviews I conducted with fifteen exponents of the contemporary tradition, organised as a journey from the most material aspects to the most abstract ones. The exploration of these themes starts with the symbolism hidden behind physical calligraphic tools, moving to the analysis of the symbolism of the point and the letters, elementary forms of the calligraphic creations. The bodily dimension has been taken into consideration, showing how the control of the body is an essential aspect of the calligraphic practice. The art can be conceived as a pathway requiring the development of several moral qualities and virtues, all necessary to improve both the artistic capabilities and the spiritual maturity of the practitioner, until the achievement of the authorisation to teach the art. Once a calligrapher reaches the license and the mastery of the art, they bear the responsibility of transmitting the art to others. Furthermore, they become agents of remembrance, portraying in the most beautiful manners the verses of the Quran in social religious spaces, as in mosques, or on calligraphic panels acquired by individual collectors or museums. Since their artwork focuses on representing religious materials, including the remembrance of the attributes of God and of Prophet Muhammad, their art is considered an act of worship. Finally, I investigate what the meaning of Divine Beauty is in Islamic calligraphy, presenting the perspectives of Turkish calligraphers and analysing the connections between the artistic form and the meaning of the contents of specific calligraphic works. In conclusion, I have not limited my analysis to the formal aspects of the art, rather I have highlighted the existential dimension of a complex practice which connects together several aspects of the human being, including the spiritual dimension. Thus, the traditional stream of Turkish contemporary calligraphy can be seen as a full manifestation of a culture, a lifestyle and a religion.

When the woman did not get pregnant or take ahead a pregnancy, some women find in adoption an alternative to play this role. This research aimed to understand the experience of being mother for adoption in the case of fertile women, but whose partner is infertile. Supported by existential-phenomenological theory, used it the narrative, how methodological instrument. Participated five women, whose adoption process followed the legal ways in the Youngness and Infancy Judgeship of Natal/RN. The results showed that in the selfish training, the woman to see herself how whose role principal is to generate children, although, she think that is natural her participation in others activities go out home too. In male infertile case is a tendency that the woman strikes the infertile status too. The adoption is an alternative to fulfill her desire of being a mother and, meanwhile, please her husband and guarantee the continuity of her love relationship. Through motherly care, the woman discover herself as a mother, what brings a new meaning for her live, independent of to generate a child. Though, exit frustration, sometimes, in association with suffering, on account of the pregnancy and childbirth absence. The patients are enrolled in a mental health ambulatory clinic in the city of Natal (RN). Mental disorders are growing rapidly in the contemporary world and are a source of intense mental suffering. Besides patients being strongly marked by a history of isolation and prejudice, they have been the target of real atrocities committed in the name of preservation of a supposed normality. The understanding and treatment of this disorder is influenced by cultural and historical inferences, depending on the period in which it is experienced. Semi-directed Interviews were conducted with a group of users, with the emphasis on giving voice to their uniqueness and individuality, highlighting how each one perceives his or her own experience. These were recorded and later transcribed by identifying the core of meanings. The results were analyzed under the gaze of the Humanist Phenomenology Existential perspective, which aims to unravel the phenomenon, without truths from volatility, highlighting the existence of the mental disorder as a way of living, being permeated by suffering mental and influenced by social problems, assuming contours very particular to each individual. Some progress has been perceived, even by users, with respect to the change of paradigm in the way of care, but still there is a consistent emphasis on medical and drug use. The changes point to the need for offering services to replace the asylum hospital model, and in addition to accept the bearer of mental disorder as a citizen, a bearer of rights who should be accepted and respected by society. Despite the pain expressed and its close liaison with suicide, their reports are full of perspectives and attitudes of confrontation facing life, pointing to new possibilities to be, recreating itself / O presente trabalho tem como objetivo compreender a experi?ncia de pessoas portadoras de transtorno mental, atendidas em um ambulat?rio da rede substitutiva de aten??o e cuidados em sa?de mental da cidade de Natal (RN). O transtorno mental vem sofrendo um crescimento vertiginoso no mundo contempor?neo, sendo fonte de intenso sofrimento ps?quico. Al?m de fortemente marcado por um hist?rico de isolamento e preconceito, tem sido alvo de verdadeiras atrocidades cometidas em nome da preserva??o de uma suposta normalidade. A compreens?o e tratamento desse transtorno recebe interfer?ncias da cultura e do per?odo hist?rico em que est? inserido. Foram realizadas entrevistas semi-dirigidas com um grupo de usu?rios, com o prop?sito de dar voz ? sua singularidade e subjetividade, valorizando a forma como cada um percebe a sua pr?pria experi?ncia. As mesmas foram gravadas e posteriormente transcritas, identificando os n?cleos de significados. A partir de seus relatos foi poss?vel compreender que o espa?o virtual se revela como mais um l?cus, dentre tantos, no cotidiano do ser do homem, em que emergem diferentes modos de ser-com. Dependendo de sua abertura, a proximidade ou o distanciamento tornam-se relativos, do mesmo modo que o pessoal e o impessoal, o pr?prio e o impr?prio. Al?m disso, tornou-se claro que, a virtualidade pode ajudar a lidar com a solid?o e a ang?stia temporariamente, da mesma forma que pode tornar-se uma barreira para um contato mais aprofundado e aut?ntico com os outros. Os colaboradores demonstraram uma atitude de serenidade, um poder dizer sim e n?o simultaneamente ? t?cnica moderna, al?m de uma postura de meditar sobre os modos como se conectam. High-quality preschool education produces substantial long-term educational, social, and economic benefits, but large benefits occur only when teachers are professionally prepared and adequately compensated. Qualifying the teacher candidates depends on many interrelated components of a teacher education. The aim of this study is to evaluate the student selection policy, decision-making policy, recruitment policy, teacher candidates&rsquo / educational profiles, faculty development and assignment policy, curriculum and instruction, and the graduates&rsquo / competences from the perspectives of the faculty members in the preschool teacher education program. For this purpose, decision-oriented program evaluation CIPP model is taken as a framework. In order to reach in-depth and detailed information from the participants, study is designed as a qualitative phenomenological research. Participants are selected through purposeful sampling strategies that include criterion sampling and snowball sampling procedures from the population of 150 academicians in the 55 preschool teacher education program in Turkey. Data is collected through semi-structured interviews and open-ended questionnaires from 58 participants. According to the content analysis, findings indicated that there is need for the additional tests in the student selection, improvement in the faculty development policy, accreditation, faculty initiative in curriculum planning and implementing, alternative strategies in practicum, and collaboration of the local authorities and the faculties in the recruitment policy of the graduates. In this respect, it is believed that the findings will pave the way for the program developers to reform the program accordingly, will give further insights about the real experiences of the academicians and take their suggestions to improve the program and will help the researchers to raise some new questions about the preschool teacher education program to investigate.
