Improvement of a Vermicompost Sieving Machine for Smallholder Farmers in the Philippines : A study conducted in science city of Muñoz, Philippines / Förbättring av en siktmaskin med maskkompostering för småskaliga bönder på Filippinerna

Marcos Yousif, Anokina, Vidal, Felipe, Cosaceanu, Ioana January 2023 (has links)
The Philippines has a primarily agricultural economy, with many rural residents relying on farming for their livelihoods. The Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) was established in 1992 to support smallholder farmers in the country through research and technology development related to carabaos. The PCC's national headquarters in Nueva Ecija's Science City of Muñoz maintains a herd of approximately 400 carabaos and uses a drum sieve to separate the vermicompost from the carabaos for sale and efficient manure management. Vermicomposting is a profitable form of agriculture in the country, utilizing African night crawler worms to convert biodegradable waste materials into organic fertilizer. However, many smallholder farmers who wish to start vermicomposting do not have access to a sieve machine as they are often too expensive. Neighboring farmers often form cooperatives with at least 15 members who work together towards common goals. Because these cooperatives offer services such as loans, training, and equipment access, they would be able to provide a sieve machine for their members and therefore the individual farmer would have a greater chance to be able to start vermicomposting. This study was aimed at designing a more accessible sieve machine for low-income smallholder farmers. The resulting design is a manually-driven machine operated through a pedal mechanism. The machine is smaller, easier to maintain and has no drift costs in comparison to the existing machine at PCC. It has integrated wheels and brakes, a brush for clearing clogged holes, and a collector. However, no physical prototype was made to verify its implementation. The concept is made of a mix of raw materials and purchased components, with the raw materials sourced from the Philippines and the components possibly imported. The estimated price was around PHP 58,468, which was less than the PCC machine, considered reasonable for cooperatives but may not be affordable for individual smallholder farmers.

How can Beema Bamboo Plantations Benefit Islands and Farmers in the Philippines? : A study in Manila, Marinduque and Romblon, the Philippines

Faraj, Dina, Shihab, Saad January 2019 (has links)
This study was conducted as a bachelor thesis at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in the spring of 2019. The study was carried out as a Minor Field Study (MFS) funded by the Swedish agency SIDA (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency). The study focuses on the potential economic- & ecological benefits of farming bamboo on small islands in the Philippines. Few other countries are so vulnerable for natural disasters as the Philippines. Majority of the farmers in the Philippines live on a day to day payment where the life of a family can be destroyed when a disaster strikes and ruins the crops. Bamboo could be intercropped and supply farmers with a more stable and higher income on the long term. This project examines previous Beema bamboo plantations, the characteristics of Beema bamboo and explores future implementations. The main type of bamboo that is explored is Beema bamboo, a modified and improved version of Bambusa Balcooa. The Philippines have optimal growth conditions for Beema bamboo and could develop industries which can provide job opportunities. Since the research of Beema bamboo is still in early stages in the Philippines this goal is still years away.

Philippine Economic And Political Development And Philippine Muslim Unrest

de Leon, Justin 01 January 2008 (has links)
Muslim culture and society has been a part of the Philippine islands in spite of nearly ninety-five percent of the population being Christian (a majority Catholic), yet did not become a separatist movement until the 1970's. Since then, the two main separatist groups the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) have been battling the Philippine government. The parties entered truces in 1996 and 2001, yet there has been a cycle of violence continues. The Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), linked to Al Qaeda, emerged in 1990 and has launched many attacks on the Christian Philippine majority. The prolonged Muslim unrest in the ARMM has left thousands dead and hundreds of thousands displaced. The main objective of this research paper is to examine Philippine economic and political development and its impact on Philippine Muslim unrest. This paper presents a critical analysis of the economic and political development and Philippine Muslim unrest by examining six major features of the Philippines; they are: The historical evolution, economic development, political development, socio-cultural setting, geographic setting, and the quality of life of the Filipino people. This research also examines Fareed Zakaria's illiberal democracies theory, liberal institutionalism, and the Marxist theory of class revolution and primarily relies on research conducted at the University of the Philippines and from Philippine and Asian scholars. By taking a holistic comprehensive approach and by using international relations theory, this research fills two gaps in the literature about Philippine Muslim unrest. The research concludes with a look at future challenges, both short term and long term that face the country, as well as, possible future scenarios. The findings of this research are that the economic and political development and the historical evolution, though major contributory factors, are not the sole reason for the prolonged Philippine Muslim unrest. The most pervasive causal factor to Muslim unrest was the socio-cultural setting. Because of the all-pervasive nature of culture; at first glance, the socio-cultural setting was not a major apparent cause. At almost all times examined throughout this research, certain cultural tendencies guided decisions and altered the course of events more so than any other single variable. Corruption, crony capitalism, patrimonialism, and irrational institutions all stem from the tendencies of Philippine culture must be addressed to find lasting peace in the country. A move toward rational legal institutions and liberal constitutionalism, will lead the way to the creation of a liberal democracy and break the cycle of violence occurring in the Philippines.

The Filipino-American Care Chain : Gender, Transnational Migration and the Globalisation of Care

Nanna, Thydén January 2019 (has links)
By caring for children, the elders and the ill, care workers are fundamental for the global economy and for peoples’ well-being. As confirmed in this thesis, the majority of domestic workers are migrant women. Historically, however, women’s work has been unpaid, considered unproductive, and the significance of (migrant) women’s care work has widely been ignored in state policies. Arguing that migration research has overlooked the gender-migration- development nexus, the aim of this thesis was to examine the Filipino-American care chain. Through a feminist and intersectional perspective, this study showed how the creation of Filipino women as “natural caregivers” reproduce stereotypical images of female migrants as “others”. This paper was based on material gathering from a mixed method, and also demonstrated how care is organised around remittances and transnational parenting. Finally, this thesis concluded that the unequal distribution of care work is dependent on young women migrant workers taking on care and household responsibilities.

Occhietti, Raphaelle 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis is a study of Francisco Goya’s imposing painting The Assembly of the Royal Company of the Philippines, more commonly known as The Junta of the Philippines (1815). It seeks to remove the work from the isolation in which previous studies have largely kept it confined and to situate it at the core of the global artistic and economic nexus that marked the early nineteenth century. My account is informed by a historical approach that is anchored in current postcolonial theory. By inverting the painting’s perspective, to open it from the assembly room onto the Spanish Empire, I place the work at the centre of a rich web of global relationships that link the metropole and its colonies. Seen in this light, the Junta of the Philippines evinces a particular point of view of the Spanish Empire in decline. Far from being closed in on itself, the work articulates a series of themes that respond to the artistic demands of the time, namely those of the liberal bourgeoisie. Goya’s depiction of a meeting of stockholders expounds a particular visual conception of British and Spanish merchant and financial capitalism. The artistic intrigue that Goya weaves in The Junta of the Philippines reverberates on a broad historical scale that confirms the painting’s present-day relevance.
