Godoi, Alana Rezende January 2020 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Introduction: The "fetal programming" hypothesis argues that events that occur during intrauterine life have an influence on the pathogenesis of diseases in adulthood. Environmental factors can program in the individual the early onset of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Currently, there is an increase in the consumption of artificial sweeteners associated with treatments for weight loss and diabetes control, with sodium saccharin being one of the most consumed. However, during pregnancy and lactation, the use of sodium saccharin is restricted, since it is permeable to the placenta, interacting with the conceptus, and for composing breast milk. Although the effects of the use of sweeteners on the body weight and metabolism are well known, there are no reports of researches which relate fetal programming through the use of sodium saccharin to the postnatal development of the testis. Thus, the present study aims to investigate the influence of the use of sodium saccharin and glucose on the maternal and reproductive health of male offspring. Material and methods: Dams Sprague-Dawley rats were fed during pregnancy and lactation with a standard chow for rodents, filtered water ad libitum and supplemented with low-fat plain yogurt (Yogurt Control Group, n = 9); low-fat plain yogurt sweetened with 5% (v/v) glucose solution (Dinâmica®) (Glucose Group, n = 10); low-fat plain yogurt sweetened with 0.3% (v/v) sodium saccharin solution (Dinâmica®) (Sodium Saccharin Group, n = 10). ... Implementation of the National Curriculum for physical development in the reception year

Perry, Heather Marina 09 June 2011 (has links)
This study explored how Grade R teachers at a pre-primary school understand and implement early childhood physical development practices, based on the Revised National Curriculum Statement (RNCS) for Grade R. The research took place in the form of a case study at a private pre-primary school in Rivonia, Sandton. Data was collected by means of document analysis of the RNCS for Grade R, a focus group discussion with purposefully selected participants and observations within the school. Analysis of the data was twofold, firstly utilising taxonomic analysis based on Anita Harrow‟s (1972) taxonomy of psychomotor learning (which formed the theoretical framework for the study), and secondly by means of a thematic analysis of data. Results and findings indicate that participants attributed significant importance to physical development in early childhood as a building block for the development of further cognitive skills and academic achievement. Participants demonstrated an in-depth and extensive comprehension of physical development pertaining to early childhood and their understanding thereof is reflected in their teaching practices offering varying opportunities and ways in which to learn. The school takes a whole-school approach to physical development by incorporating it into different contexts and enlisting the assistance of various role-players. Emerging themesreflect concern with the impact of modern lifestyle on children's physical development, current inadequacies of physical education programmes in schools, the need for teachers to remain informed and educated in physical development and the need for further development of the physical development section of the Grade R RNCS. Participants had various concerns with the curriculum in terms of what they perceived as its non-specificity, the participative versus quality performance approach, the lack of age-appropriate norms, and perceived irregularities with other areas of the Grade R curriculum. As a result, participants seemingly relied to a lesser extent on the RNCS to inform their implementation of physical development practices, relying instead on other sources of guidance. Participants therefore felt that the physical development section of the Grade R RNCS does not provide sufficient guidance and information for newly qualified or inexperienced teachers, especially those who have limited access to resources. Subsequently, this study highlights the need for teacher training as a means of improving the status of school physical education, assistance with and dissemination of information regarding early physical development in educational psychology practice and the need for further research in early physical development and the RNCS. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Educational Psychology / unrestricted

An investigation into the inclusion of child development in early childhood programs

Böhmer, Wynette 30 November 2007 (has links)
The research study was determined by the fact that child development is important and that teachers/caregivers must acknowledge every child's level of development, age, individuality, social and cultural background when planning a program. Children are complex beings and therefore the literature study focused on pre-schooler, three to five years, child development during this stage and domains and principles of development. Semi-structured interviews were based on literature study and used to guide the interviews. After analyzing the data themes and sub-themes was identified and verified with literature. The teachers/caregivers were able to share knowledge, experiences, needs and concerns. To conclude recommendations were made to help teacher/caregivers to plan how to include child development in their daily program. / Social Work / M.Diac (Play Therapy)

The teaching of thinking skills in the preschool years to enhance cognitive development

Ngobeli, Dorah Thinavhuyo 06 1900 (has links)
The study contributed to preschool education by highlighting the attitudes and perceptions of parents and preschool teachers and practitioners concerning preschool education in general, and the teaching of thinking skills in particular. Furthermore, information with regard to developing guidelines for a preschool learning programme to assist unqualified and underqualified preschool practitioners in predominantly rural areas was generated. The literature study revealed that all areas of development, that is, cognitive, physical, social, moral and emotional are interrelated. Therefore, development in cognition is influenced by, and influences the other areas. Cognitive development in particular, is most rapid during the preschool years and should be stimulated at this stage. A qualitative study was undertaken to determine the attitudes and perceptions of preschool teachers/practitioners and parents with regard to preschool education in general, and the teaching of thinking skills to enhance cognitive development in particular. Four preschools in Region 3 of the Northern Province were observed to investigate the teaching of thinking skills and also the learning programmes used in these institutions. The findings from the literature and research studies led to the following conclusions: * Parents are uninformed concerning their role in stimulating the cognitive development of their children. * Preschool education is regarded as being very important for children. * There are no prescribed learning programmes or explicitly stated guidelines underlying preschool education. * Thinking skills are taught to a greater or lesser extent in preschools, although the intentional mediation is missing. *The training of preschool practitioners is a neglected area. In view of the conclusions, the following recommendations were made: * Underqualified and unqualified preschool practitioners should receive training. * Partnership between parents and preschool practitioners should be encouraged to ensure continuity between the home and the preschool. * Parents' support programmes should be developed to empower them as their children's most significant mediators. * Thinking skills should be infused in preschool learning programmes and activities. * Remote, rural areas should be supported by the goverment and NGOs with the provision of preschool education. * Prescribed guidelines and learning programmes should be developed to assist unqualified and underqualified practitioners in rural and disadvantaged areas in the Northern Province. / Effects of morphine at different stages of pregnancy in rats: maternal behavior, physical and neurobehavioral development of the offspring and molecular biology of opioid receptors.

Mattos, Renata Ruggier de 21 March 2014 (has links)
Opioids are substances of endogenous or synthetic origin, referring to all related opiate compounds, the prototype of the opioid agonists, morphine, known for its ability to relieve severe pain effectively. Morphine binds to at least three types of receptors known as &#181;, <font face=\"symbol\">d and <font face=\"symbol\">k. Opioids appear to be related to reproductive behaviors among this maternal behavior (CM). The CM is complex, instinctive and species-specific characteristics determined by physiological changes that occur shortly before or after delivery and must adjust to a number of variables such as food availability, for example, and directly influences the physical developments, neurological and behavior of the offspring, or not ensuring the perpetuation of the species. Studies have shown that the physiological and pharmacological manipulation reproductive states with morphine to rats in late pregnancy, by themselves, are capable of altering the maternal ability, affecting the development of the offspring, and can modulate the expression of genes encoding the opioid receptors in regions implicated in the control of CM, are unknown but the results of this opioid-treated rats in the early stages of pregnancy, aim of this work as well as the physical and neurobehavioral parameters of the offspring and molecular biology of opioid receptors in different brain regions both in the offspring as mothers. The results showed that morphine treatment in the first two thirds of pregnancy of rats changed some parameters of the CM as the recovery of the puppies, and changed some of the physical parameters such as weight gain and the development of sex organs and neurobehavioral development in both offspring as well as the patterns of gene expression and protein products in mothers and their offspring in the striatum, hypothalamus and PAG. It follows therefore that treatment with morphine during pregnancy in rats can alter the physiological status of mothers with direct implications in offspring.

Van Niekerk, Lizl-Louise January 2005 (has links)
This study had the dual purpose of determining the anthropometric and motor development status of street children as well as to establish the effect of an intervention programme on their motor development. The first aim of the study was to determine the anthropometric and motor development status of street children. The children were selected from a sample of street children living in a state-run shelter. Twenty eight children (20 boys and 8 girls) between the ages of 7 and 14 were measured to determine their anthropometric and motor development status. The anthropometric measures included stature, mass, body-mass index (BMI), and two skin folds (subscapular and triceps). The measurements were performed according to the protocol of the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK). The results of the anthropometric measurements showed that the street children are shorter, lighter and have a lower BMI and smaller skin folds than the norm for children of the same age. The sample exhibited a prevalence of malnutrition. The same subjects who were tested to determine the anthropometric composition (except for four children, who had since left the shelter) were used to determine the motor development status. The gross motor, fine motor and neuromotor functions were tested to determine the motor development status. This was determined by means of the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test II of Motor Proficiency (BOTMP), the Sensory Input Screening Instrument and a section of the Quick Neurological Screening Test II. The results showed that the motor (gross motor, fine motor and neuromotor) development of the street children is below the standard norms. The second aim of the study was to determine the effect of an intervention programme on the motor development of street children. The same subjects who were tested to determine the motor development status (except for four children, who had since left the shelter) were used to determine the effect of a motor intervention programme. Seventeen boys and 7 girls between the ages of 7 and 14 years were randomly selected and divided into an experimental (n=13) and a control group (n= 11). A 10-week motor intervention programme that consisted of bi-weekly sessions of 45 minutes was implemented. The affectivity of this was evaluated by a post-test. The programme consisted of perceptual motor, sensory integration and task specific activities using the integrated method. The main components, which were addressed in the lessons, were bilateral integration, response speed, hand skills, muscle tone, motor planning, equilibrium, vestibular function and vision strengthening activities. The program was presented by a qualified kinderkineticist. The Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (BOTMP), the Sensory Input Screening Instrument and a section of the Quick Neurological Screening Test I1 were applied to determine the effect of the intervention programme. Covariance of analysis, correcting for pre-testing differences between the groups, indicated improvement of the Bruininks-Oseretsky-Test Total as well as in fine motor skills and upper limb speed in the experimental group. Vestibular and vision functions also increased significantly in this group, which might have contributed to the improvement in fine motor development. All these improvements showed a high practical significance (ES>0.8). Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that the physical growth and motor development deficits as well as the positive effects of the intervention program, as identified in this study be brought under the attention of relevant persons in state organizations and private institutions, which are involved with street children. / Thesis (M.A. (Human Movement Science))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.

Krepšinio treniruočių įtaka 12-14 metų mergaičių su klausos negalia fiziniam išsivystymui, specialiam fiziniam ir techniniam parengtumui / The impact of basketball trainings on physical development, special physical and technical fitness of 12-14 year old girls with hearing impairment

Pazdrazdis, Algirdas 16 August 2007 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Due to extensive and varied physical movable and emotional activity basketball is very popular in various Lithuanian population groups, hearing impaired children among them. In order to perfectly master basketball technique, high physical sportsmanship as well as a long and targeted basketball training is needed. Scientific research regarding characteristics of sport training of hearing impaired people is still insufficient while sportive sportsmanship of girls playing basketball in Lithuania have not been investigated at all. The aim of this work is to examine and assess the influence of basketball training to the change of physical development, sportsmanship and basketball technique skills of 12-14 years old hearing impaired girls. The research was performed in two stages. The first study was performed in January 2006 and the second one was performed in October of the same year. Methods of anthropometry as well as various test methods were used in research process to evaluate physical sportsmanship and basketball technique skills. Eight hearing impaired girls of the age of 12-14 years attending basketball trainings participated in the research. During the research it was found that the researched girls were not of the same physical development and the rate of their physical development was different. During the second study in comparison with the first one the average height of the girls reliably increased by 5,6 cm (p<0,001) from 151 cm to 156,6 cm, average body mass... [to full text]
