Qualité des relations d'objet activées dans le jeu libre des enfants normaux et abusés sexuellement

L'objet de l'étude consiste à comparer l'activité de jeu de 13 enfants abusés sexuellement à celle de 13 enfants nonabusés, afin d'évaluer les séquelles psychologiques de l'abus sexuel. Les enfants abusés, recrutés principalement en collaboration avec le CPEJ-Québec et lés CLSC de la région de Québec à la suite d'allégations d'abus sexuel, sont pairés au niveau du sexe et de l'âge aux enfants non-abusés Ces derniers sont recrutés principalement dans les garderies du campus universitaire et sont sélectionnés en fonction de l'absence de perturbations psychologiques. Les deux groupes sont de plus similaires au niveau démographique (état civil et revenu). Chaque enfant est rencontré à deux reprises et l'un des enregistrements vidéo des séances de jeu libre est choisi au hasard pour constituer le matériel de l'étude. L'activité de jeu est cotée fidèlement à l'aide des échelles de segmentation, de catégories de jeu, de thèmes de jeu, de formes de cessation de jeu et de qualité des relations d'objet du CPTI (Children Play Therapy Instrument, Kernberg, Chazan, Normandin, 1994). Schémas relationnels selon le sexe d'enfants abusés sexuellement, mesurés à travers le jeu libre

Cette étude propose d ’évaluer les schémas relationnels selon le sexe de jeunes enfants abusés sexuellement, mesurés à travers le jeu libre. L’objectif central de l’étude est d’améliorer la compréhension des enjeux identitaires et d ’identification des jeunes victimes d’abus sexuel. L’échantillon est constitué de 40 enfants (20 garçons et 20 filles) victimes d’abus sexuel allégué,âgés de 3 à 5 ans. Chaque enfant est filmé en séance de jeu libre pendant deux périodes de 45minutes. Le jeu est analysé à partir du Children Play Therapy Instrument adapté pour les enfants abusés sexuellement (P.F. Kernberg & Normandin, 2000). Les résultats d’analyses de variance indiquent que les garçons abusés déploient dans leur jeu des schémas relationnels plus malveillants et moins bienveillants que les filles abusées. Ces résultats démontrent que les jeunes garçons et les jeunes filles abusés présentent des profils de schémas relationnels différents, suggérant des répercussions profondes de l’abus sexuel sur le processus d’identification et sur l’identité des garçons et des filles d’âge préscolaire. / Cette étude propose d ’évaluer les schémas relationnels selon le sexe de jeunes enfants abusés sexuellement, mesurés à travers le jeu libre. L ’échantillon est constitué de 40 enfants (20garçons et 20 filles) victimes d ’abus sexuel allégué, âgés de 3 à 5 ans. Chaque enfant est filmé en séance de jeu libre avec un intervenant, pendant deux périodes de 45 minutes. L ’analyse du jeu est réalisée à partir de la grille du Children Play Therapy Instrument adapté pour les enfants abusés sexuellement (CPTI adapté: P.F. Kemberg & Normandin, 2000). Les résultats d ’analyses de variance n ’indiquent aucune différence significative entre les garçons et les filles quant au contexte dans lequel se déploient les schémas relationnels en situation de jeu libre(capacité à jouer, expression symbolique et traumatique). Les résultats d ’analyses de variance démontrent toutefois que les garçons abusés déploient dans leur jeu plus de schémas relationnels malveillants (prédation et anéantissement) que les filles. En contrepartie, les résultats d’analyses de variance indiquent que les filles abusées déploient dans leur jeu plus de schémas relationnels bienveillants (autonome) que les garçons. Ces résultats semblent donc valider le fait que les jeunes garçons et les jeunes filles abusés présentent des profils de schémas relationnels différents, suggérant une intervention thérapeutique spécifique selon le sexe de l’enfant. L’étude démontre aussi la pertinence d ’utiliser la théorie des schémas relationnels pour identifier les répercussions profondes de l’abus sexuel sur le processus d ’identification et sur l’identité des garçons et des filles d ’âge préscolaire. De plus, l’étude contribue à valider le jeu libre comme une voie d’accès aux schémas relationnels particulièrement adaptée aux jeunes enfants abusés. Enfin, l’étude démontre que le C PU adapté est un instrument d’analyse du jeu libre et des schémas relationnels sensible à la présence du traumatisme ainsi qu’aux différences liées au sexe de l’enfant.

The development of a board game as preventative measure against the sexual abuse of grade four children in South Africa

Every child has the constitutional right to be protected from maltreatment, neglect or abuse. However, contrasting every child's constitutional right is the escalating worldwide prevalence of child sexual abuse. The incidence of child sexual abuse must be reduced as far as possible by a multi-faceted approach, including effective prevention programmes which facilitate disclosure and empower children. Since insufficient South African research on prevention programmes and preventative measures are available, the primary aim of the study was to develop a board game which can foster the prevention of sexual abuse of children. Scientifically, the motivation for the study was based on the improved understanding of the educational impact of a board game as primary prevention tool. The researcher developed the HOOC board game as part of the Hands Off Our Children Campaign. The board game, being practical and educational, has the goal of teaching children self-protective behaviours that can lower their probability of being abused. A representative sample of 1697 grade four learners, nine to twelve years of age, were selected from the Metropole East region. In order to determine the educational impact of the HOOC board game, the results of the children on the Children's Knowledge of Abuse Questionnaire-Revised (CKAQ-RIII) in the experimental and control groups were compared. The experimental group (n=407) received the board game as intervention. The control group (n=1290) did not receive any intervention. Performance on the test were also compared with gender and ethnicity. According to the obtained results, the HOOC board game correlated with the improvement of knowledge in an acceptable manner. No significant correlations were found between the scores of the tests and gender. The gender of a learner had no significant impact on the learner's ability to learn and retain information. A significant correlation was found between the difference in scores on the tests and the ethnic grouping of learners. It therefore seems that the ethnicity of a learner relates to the improvement of knowledge. Considering the overall results of the study, the use of the HOOC board game as preventative measure against the sexual abuse of grade four learners is acceptable. The HOOC board game offers a significant and valid preventative measure for sexual abuse of children in the middle age group within the South African context. / Practical Theology / D. Diac.

Bemagtiging van adolessente slagoffers van gesinsgeweld = Empowerment of adolescent victims of family violence

The research deals with the empowerment of adolescent victims of family violence. The purpose of the study was to give an account of the therapeutic intervention process of two case studies, by means of a descriptive, qualitative type of research. This research was executed via semi-structured interviews by the researcher. The population in the study was limited to adolescent victims between the age of twelve to eighteen years, who are victims of family violence. The sample in this study was two respondents. The children are students at a high school in Roodepoort. After completion of the empiric study it was concluded that the adolescent who is exposed to family violence, is empowered if a therapeutic process - like the one suggested by Oaklander (1994:289) which applies gestalt play therapeutic techniques - is followed. As clearly shown in the literature, the researcher came to the conclusion that family violence has a destructive effect on the adolescent and that he can be empowered by gestalt play therapy. OPSOMMING Die navorsing handel oor die bemagtiging van adolessente slagoffers van gesinsgeweld. Die doel van die studie was om deur middel van 'n beskrywende, kwalitatiewe tipe navorsing die terapeutiese intervensieproses van twee gevallestudies te beskryf. Hierdie navorsing het met behulp van semi-gestruktureerde onderhoudvoering geskied. Die populasie in die studie was begrens tot adolessente slagoffers tussen die ouderdom twaalf tot agtien jaar wat slagoffers van gesinsgeweld is. Die steekproef in hierdie studie was twee respondente. Die kinders is verbonde aan 'n hoërskool te Roodepoort. Daar is na afloop van die empiriese studie tot die gevolgtrekking gekom dat indien 'n terapeutiese proses - soos wat deur Oaklander (1994:289) voorgestel word met die benutting van gestaltspelterapeutiese tegnieke - deurloop word, die adolessent wat aan gesinsgeweld blootgestel word, bemagtig word. The utilisation of the memory box as a medium in gestalt play therapy with AIDS orphans in middle childhood

This study aimed to test the efficacy of the memory box as a medium in Gestalt Therapy, specifically within a therapeutic group with AIDS orphans in the middle childhood phase of development. The aim was to explore and describe the utilisation of the memory box, as a medium for telling one's story, within the safety of the Gestalt play therapy group. It was felt that the increased self-awareness fostered by belonging to a supportive group could enhance self-concept. The research included qualitative and quantitative data. Theoretical and the meta-theoretical assumptions affecting children, in the middle childhood phase, orphaned through HIV/AIDS, were reviewed. The group sessions were described and the data obtained from the pre and post-test was graphically illustrated. The information was then compared to ascertain whether the objectives had been met. A program to prepare children for grommet insertion and adenoidectomy : a Gestalt therapy approach

The aim of this study was to develop a Gestalt play therapy based hospital preparation program for children undergoing the surgical procedures of grommet insertion, or grommet insertion and adenoidectomy, at Tygerberg Hospital. Literature was reviewed according to relevant topics, namely otitis media in children, Gestalt play therapy, theories of child development, and children's experience of illness and hospitalisation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four subject groups and the data obtained was qualitatively analysed. Research findings were discussed and integrated with reference to the literature. This information was applied in the development of the proposed program. The aim, underlying principles, objectives and components of the program were discussed and guidelines for implementation were provided. The program was implemented and evaluated in a single subject pilot study, which yielded a positive response. Recommendations for both practical implementation in a therapeutic context and further study in a research context were made. OPSOMMING Die doel van hierdie studie was om `n Gestalt spelterapie-gebaseerde hospitaalvoorbereidingsprogram te ontwikkel vir kinders wat die chirurgiese prosedures van ventilasiebuis-plasing of ventilasiebuis-plasing en adenoïdektomie by Tygerberg-hospitaal ondergaan. `n Literatuurstudie is uitgevoer rakende relevante onderwerpe; naamlik, otitis media in kinders, Gestalt spelterapie, kinderontwikkelingsteorieë, en kinders se ervaring van siekte en hospitalisasie. Semi-gestruktureerde onderhoude is met vier subjekgroepe uitgevoer en die data wat verkry is, is kwalitatief geanaliseer. Navorsingsbevindinge is bespreek en geïntegreer met verwysing na die literatuur. Hierdie inligting is toegepas in die ontwikkeling van die voorgestelde program. The research deals with the losses the 7-11 year old child in die single parent family may experience. The research has been conducted from a practical theological (pastoral) perspective. The goal of the study was to investigate and elaborate upon the various losses the child may experience on a physical, cognitive, social, spiritual and an emotional level. In order to complement and verify the literature study, empirical methods of research were utilised. Focus groups were conducted within the framework of Gestalt Play Therapy. Parent interviews were used as an additional method of research. It became apparent, as a result of the literature and empirical studies, that the loss of a parent (whether by divorce/ abandonment/unmarried status/ death) affects the child on all levels of his/her development. An educational psychological perspective on the use of filial therapy in mother-child relationships

The different reactions of parents to the discovery that their children had ADD/ADHD has an effect on the primary relationship established between mother and child. This is essential in the later involvement, experience and meaning attribution of the child with respect to all subsequent relationship formation on the child's journey towards his ultimate target, namely self-actualisation. It was felt that psychological intervention could help parents to bond, communicate with and relate to their children without experiencing negative feelings which would enhance parental acceptance. In this study, ten mothers were used to participate in an adapted group Filial Therapy programme. This unique therapy involves parents as the primary agents to resolve child-related problems and to encourage children's healthy psycho-social development. Results were positive. The mothers felt that they had formed better relationship with their children. They were empowered with knowledge and coping mechanisms, such as reflective listening, setting limits and providing choices.
