Justifying Rebellion : A Study on When Individuals Justify Rebellion-Related Political Actions

Yilmaz, Mert Can January 2019 (has links)
Under what conditions does an ordinary citizen find it justified for an individual to engage in rebellion-related political actions? Though there is a large body of literature on rebel participation phenomenon, little is known about how ordinary citizens react to the motivations of rebels highlighted by the scholars. This research aims to address this gap by focusing on three generic sources of motivation for rebel participation: economic or political grievances, selective incentives, and indiscriminate violence. It is theorized that identification with a rebel candidate’s social group and the gender of this person would both affect individuals’ indicated justification levels for rebellion-related political actions. Through a self-administered survey conducted online by 309 participants from the United States, the theoretical expectations have been examined and while it turns out that the gender of a rebel candidate is not a decisive factor, the explanations based on identification with the rebel candidate’s social group has been partially supported in the study. Further research focusing on other sources of motivation for rebels is encouraged to assess the extent to which the proposed causal mechanism applies beyond the explanations for rebel participation taken in this study.

Dahlman, Nina January 2010 (has links)

/
This is a thesis about views on democracy among participants at the European Social Forum in Malmö 2008. The aim is to study if there are any statistical connections between experience of political actions, identification with the global justice movement and the view on democracy. The theoretical frames of the thesis are twofold: theories on democracy and theories on political actions. Democracy is divided into three different systems: participatory democracy, deliberative democracy and representative democracy. Political actions are divided into collective and individual political actions. By carrying out a statistical analysis through regression and factor analysis am I able to confirm that an experience of political actions have a statistical influence on an individual view on democracy. A participatory view is influenced by a strong identification with the global justice movement, experiences of confrontation as political method and experiences of participatory ways of making political decisions. A deliberative view is influenced by a strong identification with the global justice movement, experiences of confrontation as political method and experiences of deliberative ways of making decisions. A representative view on democracy is influenced by experiences of European movement- or association activity and experiences of representative and informative political actions. The results show that individual’s view on democracy is a question of great complexity and is often containing elements from different democratic ideals.

Franco, Isaura Melo 13 February 2014 (has links)
The history of students in Ituiutaba-MG in the period that comprehends the years of 1952 to 1968, mainly those bound to student associations, it is constituted as research object of this dissertation. Such temporal delimitation comes of the year of creation of the União Estudantil de Ituiutaba student representation entity at the municipal level, which constituted a milestone for the organization of local students, and is limited until 1968, when most of these subjects were disentailing of the entity, gradually losing strength of organization and action in society. In the course of this research highlight important events relating to the actions of the student movement, on the political, cultural, social and educational scenario present in national and regional level in the 1950s and 1960s. Here is also a brief history of the municipality of Ituiutaba and its educational setting until the 1960s as a way to contextualize the horizon on which stood the principal actions of the students in Ituiutaba. This study enabled us to perform reflections about the genesis, performance and weakening of the student movement in this city, and to identify and analyze the actions of a political nature made by this. We observed much of the cultural practices experienced by students represented by unions, clubs and other student bodies of the four local high schools, revealing the common educational principles that circulated in this scenario. Furthermore, it was possible to identify the student profile reported in the press in that context. Therefore, we use as main source of research collections of five newspapers that circulated in Ituiutaba in the 1950s and 1960s. Also resorted to oral history, through semi structured interviews the four student leaders from the investigated context, and analysis of the Minutes of the City Hall of Ituiutaba, photographs of schools and students, works of memoirists and documents of secondary level schools investigated as their internal regulations and inspection reports. So we conducted a cross between discussed sources, compared to the bibliography on the theme, always relating the local context with the national. Overall, this work allows us to understand the history of these important subjects of the educational process has been marked by activities that they conformed to the then prevailing political system, especially from the military dictatorship.

Exit, voice, and loyalty: how grassroots elections reshape urban Chinese citizens' political efficacy and political actions

Tsai, Yi Nung Unknown Date (has links)
