Strategies for holistic health support of men in polygynous relationships

Makua, T. P. January 2014 (has links)
The study has two separate but related aims, which are to explore the social and health experiences of men who are in polygynous relationships and to develop holistic health and social strategies to support men who are in polygynous relationships. Objectives of the study were to identify the different permutations of polygynous relationships that related to health and social issues; to clarify the social status of men who are in polygynous relationship; to explore and describe the health experiences of men in polygynous relationship; to explore and describe the social experiences of men in polygynous relationship; to explore the spiritual experiences of men who are in a polygynous relationship; to describe and to generate holistic strategies to support men who are in a polygynous relationships. Method: In this study, the researcher used descriptive and interpretive phenomenological processes to develop a range of holistic strategies to support men who were in polygynous relationships. The researcher described the experiences and developed interpretations based on the lived experiences that the men reported. Findings: Polygyny remains the reality within the Bapedi tribe in Sekhukhune area. The practice of polygyny is not only for the affluent as indicated in most literature but is also practiced as a corrective strategy for families who are experiencing marital problems. Polygyny is not viewed as abusive to the women and children but rather beneficial to the women. It helps to reduce the risks of the development of cervical cancer that is predisposed by frequency of sexual intercourse. Polygyny promotes the morals within the communities, as children grow up within the two parents’ environment as opposed to the rising numbers of single parent families. Polygyny practice in the Sekhukhune areas is a voluntary choice and not a forced marital arrangement. Conclusions and recommendations: The researcher recommended policy guidance to support health practitioners with strategies to assist members of polygynous families in need of help. The policy also guides employers to recognise and to register the second or third wife as beneficiaries of the working husband. / Health Studies / D. Litt. et Phil . (Health Studies)

Gender dynamics of the small house phenomenon in the Harare Metropolitan Province, Zimbabwe

Muchabaiwa, Wonder January 2018 (has links)
Text in English / The small house phenomenon amongst the Shona people in contemporary Zimbabwe forms part of the relationship and household arrangements amongst certain heterosexual couples. In cases where partners engage in small house relationships, it has specific implications for existing marriage and family dynamics. The study sought to address the question: What are the perceptions on gender dynamics of the small house phenomenon as an emerging family structure in contemporary Zimbabwean society? The relative newness as well as the secretive nature and complexity of the small house relationship, render the nuances of gender dynamics in such contexts worth exploring to add value to the Sociology of Families and gender dynamics. The research was conducted in Harare metropolitan province and adopted social exchange theory and African feminism to illuminate the gender dynamics in small house households. It utilised a qualitative research paradigm and employed in-depth interviews to collect data from 30 participants who were purposively sampled. Findings of the study reveal that although the small house relationship may at times be informed by the ideals of traditional Shona polygynous marital practices, it differs in several respects with polygyny as it attempts to adapt to the socio-economic demands of the 21st century. The study uncovers that the social exchanges in small house relationships are not only gendered, but also based on inequalities relating to class, age and lineage. The small house relationship at times perpetuates gender inequalities between the partners involved. The study exposed how certain small house relationships were inundated with a myriad of problems including gender-based violence, financial constraints and increased susceptibility to HIV and AIDS and other STIs. Problems experienced in small house households are often exacerbated by the secretive nature of the relationship. Furthermore, a form of hegemonic masculinity and emphasised femininity, which are manifestations of the deeply entrenched patriarchal hegemony in the Shona culture, results in asymmetrical intimate relations. It was also revealed that small house households may inadvertently violate children’s rights, including opportunities to access and secure education and social security. Reportedly, disengaged fatherhood in the context of the small house can affect children’s welfare and socialisation negatively. / Sociology / D. Phil. (Sociology)

A gender equality perspective on the non-recognition of Muslim marriages

Jivan, Usha Ashwin 11 1900 (has links)
Generally, traditional "marriages" according to Islamic custom are void in South African law because they are potentially polygynous and do not comply with the formalities prescribed by the Marriage Act 25 of 1961 . A valid concern for those who oppose polygyny is that it may enforce and promote gender inequality in that it is practised in patriarchal Muslim societies. The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Act 108 of 1996 contains numerous provisions aimed at combating gender inequalities, and these could be used to justify the policy of non-recognition. On the other hand, the Constitution has ushered in an era of tolerance and empathy; and the equality and religion clauses could be used to ensure that polygynous marriages are no longer ignored. This study will examine the tensions between Muslim personal law and clauses in the Constitution which have led to calls for the reformation and codification of Muslim personal law. / Private Law / LL. Effect of reproductive site limitation on the intensity of sexual selection and the quality of paternal care: a meta-analysis / Efeito da limitação de sítios reprodutivos sobre a intensidade da seleção sexual e a qualidade do cuidado paternal: uma meta-análise

Alissa, Louise M. 21 August 2018 (has links)
The availability of reproductive sites is a major factor shaping the behavior of males and females in species with resource-based mating systems. Using a meta-analytic approach, we tested five predictions directly or indirectly derived from the mating system theory. We expected that reproductive site limitation would lead to: (1) intense male-male competition for resource possession; (2) high variance in male reproductive success, generating high values of opportunity for sexual selection; (3) high intensity of selection on male traits related to resource possession; (4) high sperm competition risk; and (5) low quality of paternal care. We compiled information from observational and experimental studies that compared the reproductive behavior of individuals of the same species under low and high reproductive site limitation. We found that, when reproductive sites are limited, there is a slight increase in male-male competition, with higher rates of nest takeover and agonistic interactions, and a slight increase in the selection gradient on male traits, with successful males tending to be larger than unsuccessful males. Reproductive site limitation has no consistent effect on the opportunity for sexual selection and on the sperm competition risk. However, territorial males invest more in gonads and lose less paternity when reproductive sites are limited. There is also no clear effect of reproductive site limitation on the quality of paternal care, but few studies have addressed this subject. Taken together, our findings indicate that predictions on how reproductive site limitation affects several aspects of resource-based mating systems have weak empirical support. These predictions do not consider the plasticity in the mating tactics of males and females, which make them too simplistic. Moreover, since the original proposition of the mating system theory, our understanding of sperm competition increased a lot. We now know that accurate predictions on the intensity and direction of sexual selection should take into account both pre- and post-copulatory processes. Finally, the interplay between sexual selection and parental care is complex, and the original framework of mating system theory does not provide sufficient elements to derive clear and taxonomically broad predictions / A disponibilidade de sítios reprodutivos influencia tanto o comportamento de machos quanto de fêmeas em espécies cujo sistema de acasalamento depende da defesa de recursos.

Structure sociale et stratégies de reproduction chez la fourmi hautement polygyne Crematogaster pygmaea / Social structure and reproductive strategies in the highly polygynous ant Crematogaster pygmaea.

Hamidi, Rachid 16 July 2010 (has links)

Reproductive strategy is one of the main factors explaining eusociality and the ecological success of ants. In monogynous ants, independent foundation lead to high levels of relatedness between workers, ensuring their indiret fitness. Territoriality helps to maintain the social cohesion of the colony. In polygynous ants, nestmate recognition is generally less efficient, queens have lost the capability of solitary foundation and several maternal lineages lead to lower degrees of relatedness. Although highly polygynous, Crematogaster Pygmaea seems to share several biological traits with monogynous ants. These characteristics make this species a particularly interesting model to test several of the assumptions proposed to explain the origin and maintenance of polygyny in ants.

In the field, our results reveal that workers of this species are clearly aggressive towards non-nestmates. Populations of C. pygmaea are therefore multicolonial. Traditional Petri dish confrontations were insufficient to determine colonies’ degree of openness. Despite a simple cuticular hydrocarbon profile, alkenes and branched alkanes could be sufficient to support the colonial odor. Colonies of C. pygmaea consist of thousands of workers exchanged between different calies. Genetic and chemical data show that these exchanges contribute to the homogeneity and integrity of the colonies within populations.

Queen-worker dimorphism is pronounced in C. pygmaea and, in the laboratory, young mated queens are able to initiate a new colony by claustral foundation (in haplometrosis and pleometrosis). In the field, nuptial flights were noted at the beginning of the rain season and several young mated queens were observed digging the wet soil actively, confirming that solitary foundation is likely in this species. Swarming may occur over short distances, as suggested by the positive correlation between genetic and geographic distances among colonies.
Queens are able to follow chemical trails. Therefore, they could enter in established colonies. Nevertheless, since (i) workers are able to discriminate and kill foreign queens and (ii) relatedness is strong within colonies, adoption of foreign queens is probably rare. Genetic analysis rather suggest that colonies form family units in which the queens are recruited within a single generation and produce the workers of this generation.
Our results also show that workers are able to produce fertile males in the absence of queens. Despite this ability to reproduce, reproductive altruism in workers is probably maintain by high degree of relatedness between colony members and worker policing behaviours.

Our data show that cuticular lipid of non-fertile individuals (workers and winged virgin queens) differ from those of fertile ones by the presence of four alkenes. Mating does not alter the cuticular profile. Surprisingly, the cuticular lipid profile of mature queens is more similar to those of infertile individuals than to those of young egg-laying queens, although mature laying queens are twice as attractive as young laying queens. However, the relative proportion of one alkene (pentacosene) is clearly higher in mature queens than in their non-laying nestmates. It is therefore suggested that alkenes, and more particularly pentacosene, could be involved in fertility signalling but that queen attractiveness to workers could be released by other, non-cuticular compounds.

The biological traits of C. pygmaea have been interpreted in terms of adaptation to its environment characterized by sharply contrasting seasons. It is suggested that high number of related queens and polydomy ensure a rapid expansion of the colonies during the rainy season, allowing this species to exploit available resources with efficiency.

Silva, Emmanuel Moralez da 05 March 2013 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 4932.pdf: 1990172 bytes, checksum: 7025c9dd589a8c2a6771bc24539895b5 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-03-05 / Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos / The genetic diversity of the cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) was analyzed to investigate reproductive behavior and characterize Brazilian populations of the species. Genotypes at seven microsatellite loci were used to investigate the occurrence of more than one female laying eggs in the same nest, characterizing the occurrence of multiple maternity. DNA was extracted from swabs collected from the outer surface of eggs and sexed; males were excluded. Forty-eight clutches from two breeding seasons (2010 and 2011) were genetically analyzed. Thirty-nine eggs laid by a second or third female were recorded. In five nests, the first egg of the clutch was from a different female, the laying happening prior to that of the incubating female. Suggesting nest takeover by another pair of egrets that kept the pre-existing eggs together with its own clutch. In the other 43 nests, the hypothesis of brood parasitism was posed to explain why one or two additional females were found laying eggs in a nest. A 463-bp fragment of the mitochondrial DNA control region Domain I was amplified for 148 individuals from seven Brazilian populations to investigate genetic-population and demographic parameters. Genetic diversity indices, the population structure tests Fst and AMOVA, a haplotype network, mismatch distribution and neutrality tests (Tajima s D, Fu s Fs, Fu and Li s D* and F*, Ramos-Onsins and Rozas R2) revealed the following: i) a high level of diversity was recorded for the cattle egret in Brazil in comparison to other closely related species studied in the country; ii) genetic diversity levels determined for the Brazilian regions are similar; iii) genetic structuring was not observed between the seven studied populations; and iv) the different tests performed to determine demographic expansion revealed no significant results. This is the first genetic characterization study for Bubulcus ibis to date and the findings indicate a high degree of plasticity in reproductive behavior and confirm a marked dispersion behavior of the species, leading to the homogenization of Brazilian populations.
