Authorship and the production of literary value, 1982-2012 : Bret Easton Ellis, Paul Auster, J.T. LeRoy, and Tucker MaxLutton, Alison Mary January 2014 (has links)
Definitions of celebrity authorship and material textuality at the turn of the twenty-first century have predominantly emphasised the implicitly negative aspects of contemporary developments in the literary marketplace. Particularly prominent are arguments that the practice of authorship has become subject to homogenisation by the matrix of celebrity in which successful writers are now expected to function; and, further, that the changing nature of texts themselves and the ways in which they are marketed is eroding the implicitly superior position traditionally held by literature in the cultural marketplace. This thesis views such readings as pessimistic, and offers an alternative, seeking to formulate a new critical approach to literary value in the contemporary sphere which would appreciate notions of celebrity, populism, and digital mediation as integral and productive aspects of how literary value is formed today. Through in-depth focus on the cases of a number of unconventional contemporary American authors whose work demonstrates differing, innovative approaches to the process of authorship, this thesis exposes the ways in which contemporary, atypically ‘literary’ instances of writing can and do work within and develop beyond traditional conceptualisations of authorship and literary value. Bret Easton Ellis and Jay McInerney, largely critically considered prototypical ‘celebrity’ authors, are in the first chapter reconsidered as writers whose understanding of their position within the literary marketplace affords them a self-conscious, critical perspective on the notion of celebrity in their work and public personae. The productively self-conscious author-figure is reconsidered in the second chapter, which reads the individual and joint works of author Paul Auster and visual artist Sophie Calle as foregrounding the process of creative collaboration as uniquely illuminating and transformative within the contemporary literary sphere. The notion of dual authorship is revisited and reconceptualised in the third chapter, which considers JT LeRoy and the practice of hoax authorship, outlining how this process forces the reformulation of literary value, particularly in a contemporary setting in which authors are accountable for their work in newer, more visible ways. The final chapter expands these previously-introduced themes to consider bloggers-turned-authors, particularly Tucker Max and Julie Powell, and the impact of the merging of old and new textualities on both the orientation of the figure of the writer and the way in which value is attached to his texts by readers. Ultimately, the unconventional nature of these examples is shown to belie the universality of the representations of value they enact, contributing to a full and salient account of how literary value is determined at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

Lake Powell Research Project: Hydrologic ResearchJacoby, Gordon C. 05 May 1973 (has links)
From the Proceedings of the 1973 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - May 4-5, 1973, Tucson, Arizona / The Lake Powell Research Project is investigating the effects of man's activities on the Southeastern Utah-Northeastern Arizona region. A major portion of this project is devoted to the hydrology of Lake Powell, the largest recent modification in the region. This hydrologic research is separated into the following subprojects and administrative institutions: Subprojects: Streamflow Trends, Evaporation, Bank Storage / Institution: University of California at Los Angeles. Subprojects: Sedimentation, Physical Limnology, Lake Geochemistry / Institution: Dartmouth College. The project is now concluding its first year of full-scale research effort. The UCLA subprojects are aimed at developing an overall water budget for the lake, both on an annual and long -term basis. The Streamflow_trends study indicates that the Upper Colorado River Basin (UCRB) has shifted from a few extraordinarily wet decades in the early 1900's to several relatively dry decades up to the present. Evaporation efforts so far are toward installing a data collection system capable of furnishing data for mass-transfer and energy-budget calculations. The bank-storage study indicates that bank storage constitutes a large fraction of the impounded waters. Secondary as well as primary permeability may be of major importance in bank storage. The Evaporation and Bank Storage subprojects are working in close coordination with the Bureau of Reclamation. The Sedimentation subproject has shown that the rate may be in general agreement with earlier estimates from river flow and suspended sediment data. However, the distribution is affected by sediment dams formed by slumping of canyon wall material. Physical limnology studies indicate the presence of stratifications resulting from thermal and turbidity layers causing complex movements within the lake waters. Field and laboratory efforts in lake geochemical analyses indicate that the precipitation of calcium carbonate may be the most important chemical process in changing the water quality of the lake.

Previous issue date: 2013 / FAPES / A presente dissertação tenciona discutir a constituição do ethos discursivo,
enfoque privilegiou a dimensão verbal.
universo amoroso tipicamente viniciano.
This dissertation aims to discuss the constitution of the discursive ethos,
relating that to the enunciation scenes and to the interdiscourse, in eight “afrosambas”
which belong to the LP of the same name, as a result of the
partnership between Vinícius de Moraes and Baden Powell in the 1960s. Such
songs present in common the cult of mystical entities related to the religions of
African roots, and, in particular way, they display love, sadness in different
features. In order to do so, the paradigm in which we are sustained is the one of
the French Discourse Analysis, in an approach which is aligned with the
Mainguenau’s one (1977, 2005, 2007). We decided to work with this theoretical
framework in that such approach corresponds to a methodology of studying the
discourse which considers the socio-historical conditions which made it
possible, the baseline premise of the present research, which has as a main
objective: observe how the ethos/ ethés are built; analyze the songs of the 1996
LP composed by the musicians, having the notions of interdiscourse,
enunciation scenes and discursive ethos as the basis of the analysis. From the
analysis of each afro- samba, the results point to a construction of images shed
in the discourse closely linked not only to the cultural/ diasporic universe of the
black people but also to the loving universe typically from Vinícius de Moraes.
Considering the interdiscursive signs, it is possible to realize that the afrosambas
were built from the existence and the recognition of the Other. On the
other hand, the enunciation scenes which were built present as a privileged
discourse field the religious domain from an loving sensual experience, whose
pitiful tone contributed to the construction of a sad, melancholic, sentimental
enunciator.

The Thin Man och Film Noir : En Jämförande Studie i Genre / The Thin Man and Film Noir : A Comparative Study in GenreOxenhall, Johan January 2017 (has links)
Analysen utgår ifrån Thin Man-filmerna The Thin Man (1934), After the Thin Man (1936) och Another Thin Man (1939) och noir filmerna The Maltese Falcon (1941), Laura (1944), The Big Sleep (1946) och Dark Passage (1947).

Population biology and fish hosts of several federally endangered freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae) of the upper Tennessee River drainage, Virginia and TennesseeWatson, Brian T. 22 August 2008 (has links)
A freshwater mussel survey was conducted in Indian Creek, Tazewell County, Virginia, during 1996 and 1997. Fifteen species were identified, including the federally endangered <i>Epioblasma florentina walkeri<i>, <i>Villosa perpurpurea</i>, and <i>Quadrula cylindrica strigillata</i>. Population assessments and fish host identifications were completed for the tan riffleshell and purple bean populations. Host fish for <i>E. f. walkeri</i> were limited to the banded and mottled sculpin, greenside darter, redline darter, fantail darter, and snubnose darter. Fish hosts identified for <i>V. perpurpurea</i> also were the banded and mottled sculpin, greenside darter, and redline darter. Size class structure of the tan riffleshell population ranged from 19.9 to 53.3 mm, with the population estimated at nearly 700 individuals with a density of 0.015/m². Size class structure of the purple bean population ranged from 22.9 to 66.7 mm, with the population estimated at only 70 individuals with a density of 0.002/m².
Host fish also were identified for <i>Dromus dromas</i> and <i>Lemiox rimosus</i>. The fantail darter was identified as a host for <i>D. dromas</i>, with the snubnose darter serving as a host for <i>L. rimosus</i>. Additional percids were implicated as hosts for both mussel species.
A molecular genetic key for identifying host fishes of the upper Clinch River also was constructed. The key was constructed through the analysis of restriction fragment length polymorphisms from amplified regions of mussel DNA. Thirty-six unionid species were incorporated into the key. No host fishes were identified due to an unsolved problem with amplifying DNA from glochidia collected from wild fish. / Master of Science

Gregson. / The scope of this Thesis is the development of a methodology and advance image processing techniques in order to automatically estimate vessel diameters in ophthalmological images. Motivation for the thesis is the fact that the measurement of vessel diameter plays significant role in the seasonable diagnosis of vascular disorders, as it is believed to be a relation between the variation in diameters and the detection of retinal disorders.
In this thesis, two methodologies are developed in order to be applied in ophthalmological images that are collected by using a fundus camera. The first methodology is based on the detection of the pixels that constitute the centerlines of vessels, by using differential calculus. Specifically, at each pixel that belongs to a centerline of vessel, the parameters of a specific function are calculated. This function describes as accurately as possible the intensity levels along the segment that passes through the specific pixel and is perpendicular to the vessel. The parameters of this function are estimated using optimization techniques. The final step of the methodology is the assessment of the diameters of vessels using the values of the parameters.
The second methodology is based on the algorithm that P.H.Gregson has proposed. At first, the vessels are detected by tresholding and a morphological closing algorithm is applied. Then, a thinning algorithm is used in order to detect the pixels that constitute the centerlines of the vessels and ultimately the diameter at each pixel of the centerlines is assessed using the gray levels of the pixels that constitute the segment that is perpendicular to the vessel at each specific pixel.
