Junák - český skaut? K ideovým kořenům českého skautingu. / Junák - Czech scouting? To the ideological origins of the Czech Scouting.Jiráň, Jan January 2018 (has links)
This master thesis focuses on founding and forming of czech scouting. The main source are printed documents because of lack preserved archive documents. The main method is textological and comparative analysis. At first the history of world and czech scouting is presentend. To find out the essential differences between english and czech scouting I compared two basic manuals: Scouting for Boys and Základy junáctví. In the following part of the thesis I determine three areas in which the reception of scouting in czech environment is investigated. These areas are scout value system, attitude to nation and state and relation to the Sokol organisation. In thesis are also analyzed the results of international research concerning the origin of scouting in other european countries. The results are then copared with the situation in czech lands. The thesis also includes three following attachments: set of short biographies of mentioned personalities, edition of scout laws and filled research questionnaires.

Planning for water resources management in rural areas : a case study of Texada IslandHay, Kathryn Mary January 1985 (has links)
This thesis develops a conceptual framework that could be used to understand, assess and balance water resources supply and demand in regions where data are limited. The framework is then applied to a case study of Texada Island in British Columbia.
The flow of water into and out of Texada is calculated using the Thornthwaite water balance method which uses average monthly precipitation and monthly daily average temperature data. The stock of surface water is estimated using existing data on lake volumes in conjunction with the results of analyses of air photographs and topographic maps. After the analysis of maps, reports, and interviews with mining personnel regarding the island's geology, likely aquifers were identified and their approximate water storage capacity was calculated. The present rate of water use was determined from interviews with island residents and industry personnel, field observations, analysis of available data and a review of the relevant literature on water demands by different water using sectors. Finally, to determine whether water supplies on the island were adequate to meet future demands, scenarios were constructed for analysing potential water use to 1996 by various water using sectors.
The results of the supply-demand analysis revealed that on an annual and region-wide basis, water on Texada is abundant and will be adequate to meet expected demands to 1996, and likely beyond. However, there are some local areas that currently experience water shortages during the low flow and peak demand period during the summer months.
The management options that were determined to be the most appropriate solution to summer water shortages are, in the short-term, trucking in water and selective restrictions on water use during the peak demand period. In the medium to long-term, the diversion of surface water and the development of groundwater are the most appropriate solutions to water shortages on Texada.
Next steps for planning the management of water resources on Texada Island are suggested. The initial and most important of these involves abandoning the ad hoc approach that now exists for dealing with water resources on the island and adopting a strategic, co-operative and co-ordinated approach involving residents and to a lesser extent, the Powell River Regional District, of which Texada is a part. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), School of / Graduate

A Lake Divided: Regional Shifts in Trophic Niche Structure of Lake Powell Fishes Corresponding to the Invasion of Quagga MusselsSt Andre, Nathan Richard 01 December 2020 (has links)
Introduced species can become invasive and cause catastrophic alterations to the system they invade. Both zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) and quagga mussels (Dreissena bugensis) have caused significant ecosystem alterations wherever they have invaded. These Dreissena species have caused changes in water quality and biodiversity and have disrupted energy pathways which can have cascading effects on other trophic levels. Recently quagga mussels invaded Lake Powell, a reservoir located in the southwestern USA, creating the possibility of a trophic cascade that could alter energy flow in the reservoir and change the trophic niche structure of the fishes in the lake. However, due to Lake Powell’s large size, dynamic nature, and complex hydrological structure, the effects of quagga mussels on fish species is uncertain. To determine impacts of quagga mussels on Lake Powell fishes, we quantified trophic niches of five species of sport fish over three years (2017-2019) using stable isotopes of nitrogen, δ15N, and carbon, δ13C. We test the following hypothesis: quagga mussels will cause a shift in trophic niche in more pelagic fishes such that pelagic fishes decrease in trophic position and shift toward use of more littoral energy. In addition, we compare the trophic niche of these species with a previous study on the trophic niche of fish in Lake Powell prior to full colonization of the lake by quagga mussels (2014-2015). In general, fish in the southern region of the lake exhibited a trend of decreasing δ15N suggesting decreasing trophic position and an enrichment of δ13C indicating a littoral energy shift in some species. Fish in the northern region of the lake exhibited a slight increase in trophic position and a shift towards pelagic energy across the same time period. These shifts support the hypothesis with pelagic fish experiencing a trophic niche shift, in the direction predicted, but only in the southern region of Lake Powell. Additionally, this shift is not exclusive to pelagic fish, but happened in all five species. Sediment laden input from the Colorado River may offset the impact of quagga mussels in the northern region of the lake resulting in observed regional differences.

“The Nonmusical Message Will Endure With It:” The Changing Reputation and Legacy of John Powell (1882-1963)Adam, Karen 24 April 2012 (has links)
This thesis explores the changing reputation and legacy of John Powell (1882-1963). Powell was a Virginian-born pianist, composer, and ardent Anglo-Saxon supremacist who created musical propaganda to support racial purity and to define the United States as an exclusively Anglo-Saxon nation. Although he once enjoyed international fame, he has largely disappeared from the public consciousness today. In contrast, the legacies of many of Powell’s musical contemporaries, such as Charles Ives and George Gershwin, have remained vigorous. By examining the ways in which the public has perceived and portrayed Powell both during and after his lifetime, this thesis links Powell’s obscurity to a deliberate, public rejection of his Anglo-Saxon supremacist definition of the United States.

This thesis presents a coherent proposal to discuss cosmology in high school classes, focusing on the Hubble constant. To this end: we try to understand how cosmology is presented in textbooks for high school level. We discuss the difficulties of teaching this subject in high school. Official documents of educational agencies (PCNEM - MEC 1999) were consulted to justify the implementation of Cosmology in high school level. But for the success of this task it was necessary to work on two fronts: the first one is a didactic / pedagogical approach, supported by several researchers of the teaching of celestial science in basic education, among them Rodolfo Langhi and Roberto Nardi, discussing specifically the astronomy education and Marco Antonio Moreira, with methodological concerns (LANGHI & NARDI, 2013.) which assisted in the making of the Potentially Meaningful Teaching Units (PMTU) that is a teaching method for the classroom. The second front of our work was an attempt to understand cosmology in the context of science, as this issue changed its status from speculation, in the past, to reach a leading science level among the other areas of human knowledge today.

Abstract: This master thesis focuses on the factors that led to the marginalization of the Secretary of State Colin Powell inside the foreign policy decision-making process of the George W. Bush administration (2000-2004). More precisely, this research uses the concept of small group dynamics to explain Powell’s isolation in the decision-making process that led to military interventions in Afghanistan (2001) and Iraq (2003). This thesis is a contribution to the literature relating to the decision-making process that led to those military interventions. This literature is plenteous and testifies to the consensus about Powell’s marginalization inside this administration. So far, to our knowledge, no contribution has focused on providing an explanation for this marginalization. In the first place, this research reveals that Powell’s marginalization cannot be attributed to the function he occupied in the Bush administration. By describing the small group dynamics within the war cabinet, it establishes that a series of cognitive and bureaucratic indicators are more explanatory of this isolation. The presence of a determined subgroup using bureaucratic strategies to marginalize Powell, the omnipresence of neoconservative ideology that led to important polarization within the war cabinet, and the unequal distribution of bureaucratic resources are some explanatory factors developed in this research.

Interactive Networks in Forgotten Lyres: Critical Analysis and Original CompositionHarenda, Timothy 08 1900 (has links)
Forgotten Lyres is a musical response to Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem Mutability, which depicts the fragility and unpredictable nature of human life. Four independent chamber ensembles make up the performing forces of Forgotten Lyres; the musicians evoke the topics of Shelley's text as they interact and coordinate with one another according to a variety of paradigms and without the use of a conductor. This essay focuses on the approaches to coordination within and between ensembles, and the ways in which the musicians' interactions can evoke and convey Shelley's texts. The essay also examines works by Mel Powell, Toru Takemitsu, Witold Lutoslawski, and Pierre Boulez as examples and precursors for the coordination strategies employed in Forgotten Lyres.

Modeling Dissolved Oxygen in Lake Powell using CE-QUAL-W2Williams, Nicholas Trevor 19 March 2007 (has links) (PDF)
Water quality models in the Colorado River Basin have been developed for the basin, river, and individual reservoirs. They are used to support water quality programs within the basin. The models are periodically reviewed and updated to improve the accuracy of simulations. Improving the usefulness of the Lake Powell model, one of the key reservoirs in the basin, is the subject of this study. Lake Powell is simulated using a hydrodynamic and water quality model, CE-QUAL-W2. Previously the model has been used at Lake Powell to simulate hydrodynamics, temperature, and total dissolved solids with a reasonable degree of accuracy. An additional parameter, dissolved oxygen, will be added to the simulations and then calibrated with observed data to verify accuracy. Dissolved oxygen distributions in Lake Powell vary seasonally and change under different hydrologic cycles. They are a function of physical, biological, and chemical processes. Few measurements of these processes in Lake Powell exist. To compensate for the lack of data an empirical method of loading oxygen demand to the model is developed and tested. Observed limnological processes in the reservoir guide the development of the empirical methods. The methods are then tested in 16 year model simulations and compared with dissolved oxygen measurements from the 16 year period. By accurately reproducing the dissolved oxygen distributions the Lake Powell model will have improved accuracy and also broaden its usefulness.
