The Body image of middle adolescent girls

Williams, Jennifer Gail 01 January 2002 (has links)
The prevalence of dieting is alarmingly high amongst adolescents in South Africa. Dieting behaviour, influenced by the promotion of the thin ideal, poses one of the main risks for eating disorders, which have serious physical, psychological and social consequences, including death. Treatment of eating disorders is a costly, difficult and long-term process, therefore preventative measures have been advocated. One of the shortcomings of existing school-based primary intervention programmes has been the failure to bring about significant changes in body image, a key defining feature of eating disorders. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a modified version of Rosen's body image programme with adolescents, with the view to exploring the idea of adding a body image component to existing preventative programmes. The modified version of Rosen's programme proved to be effective in improving the body image of mid-adolescents. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. A longitudinal study of overweight during childhood : etiology, mental health outcomes and mediating factors

Pryor, Laura Elizabeth 07 1900 (has links)
Child overweight and obesity has challenged the field of public health for several decades. While its direct underpinnings may be physiological, its development and outcome are intertwined with an array of psychosocial factors. This dissertation has sought to answer questions relating to the perinatal and early life risk factors associated with overweight development, as well as its potential psychological correlates during middle childhood and early adolescence. Specifically, this project had three research goals: 1) To model the developmental pattern of BMI or weight status throughout childhood and estimate population heterogeneity. 2) To identify the perinatal and early childhood risk factors that may increase the likelihood that a child follows a path leading to overweight by adolescence. 3) To examine whether being overweight in middle childhood is associated with internalizing mental health symptoms in early adolescence, and whether such an association is mediated by the experience of peer victimization and body dissatisfaction. This work takes a developmental life-course perspective in that it considers both the accumulation of risk factors over time as well as risk factors occurring during critical periods of development.1,2 We examined data drawn from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development (QLSCD), a population-based birth-cohort study in the province of Quebec, Canada. The initial sample consisted of 2120 families with a 5-month old baby born in Quebec in 1997. These families were monitored yearly or biennially until children were 13 years of age. For our first research goal, we modeled group-based developmental trajectories of child BMI and child weight status (overweight vs. not overweight). For our second goal, multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted in order to identify the perinatal and early risk factors associated with the different developmental groups of weight status. Putative risk factors were chosen from the literature and represent the perinatal environment, child behavioral characteristics, as well as the family home environment. These were analyzed longitudinally when possible, and factors that could be targeted for intervention, such as maternal smoking during pregnancy, child sleep times or television viewing were selected for analysis. In order to complete our third research goal, we examined the longitudinal associations (from age 6 to 12) between BMI z-score (CDC 2000 reference) and internalizing and externalizing problems by way of cross-lag panel models in the Mplus program. Our results indicating sparse cross-lagged links, we then examined whether peer victimization and body dissatisfaction during childhood mediate the association between early overweight development and self-reported internalizing symptoms in early adolescence. Important scientific contributions stemming from this project include the identification of distinct weight status trajectories during childhood (i.e. early onset, late onset, never overweight) and the identification of perinatal and early life risk factors and mental health outcomes that may differ depending on a child’s developmental trajectory. Additionally, we identified two important mechanisms of the association between overweight and internalizing problems: peer victimization and low body satisfaction.

Papel de vias de comunicação na eficácia da vacinação contra o sarampo na cidade de São Paulo / Communication channels role in measles vaccination in São Paulo city, Brazil.

Logullo, Patrícia Júlia 17 September 2001 (has links)
Parents or carers of 122 children were interviewed about their perception and understanding about the disease anda about measles vaccination, a kind of knowledge that can be acquired through vaccination communication campaigns or from personal communication (from the doctors, nurses of the health care center or friends). Population description factors were also identified. Results analysis shows that neither age, region of origin or residence, marital status nor educational level were related to taking or not taking measles vaccines adequately. Most of the people remembered about having being informed about the last annual vaccination campaign by television, but no communication channel was significantly associated with vaccination status. Answers to questions about knowing the disease or not or knowing the vaccine or not, when analysed alone, did not show any association with taking measles vaccines at the time indicated by health agencies. However, the results showed that when parents felt pity for their children receiving shots, they delayed the vaccination for at least 20 days. Since families visit the health center at least seven times before children complete five years of age and since most of the children does not take the measles vaccine in the exactly recommended day, but delay or anticipate the shots, it is clear that there is no compliance to the recommended government\'s measles vaccination schedule (first dose at 9 and second at 15 months of age), although this is the message that annual communication campaigns and interpersonal communication try to pass

An analysis of the role of South African Police Service railway policing in crime prevention in South Africa

Madzivhandila, Avhashoni Cynthia 01 1900 (has links)
This is a qualitative study that was intended to analyse the role of South African Police Services (SAPS) railway policing in crime prevention in South Africa (SA). Commuters are exposed to various criminal activities in the railway environment. The Metro Rail trains are the most affordable trains and for that reason, the majority of commuters use these trains to travel to and from their workplaces. This study focused on the large stations in the Gauteng province, South Africa, as there is a high influx of people coming from various provinces for job opportunities. Alexander (2019:np) states that Gauteng is the smallest province, but has the largest population and economy. The non-random sampling procedure was used to select participants. Data was collected by means of perusing the existing literature, SAPS information notes, official documents and articles. Interviews were conducted with South African Police Service Rapid Rail Unit (SAPSRRPU) members. Each unit was represented by a maximum of eight members. The information obtained from the participants was analysed by using the Atlas-ti software. This is a computer program used to analyse data in qualitative research. Situation analysis of perceptions on comprehensiveness of rape prevention interventions by implementing agencies in Addis Ababa

Difabachew Setegn Hailegeorgis 02 1900 (has links)
Abstract in English, Xhosa and Afrikaans / The victimization of women and children represents one of the public health problems deserving urgent attention in Ethiopia, making the prevention of rape in all its forms a matter of vital importance. The purpose of the study was mainly to describe the extent of rape prevention interventions in Addis Ababa and examine efforts to assist rape survivors based on the perceptions of professionals working for organizations operating in this context. The study had a further purpose of identifying difficulties faced by government institutions and making suitable recommendations for the improvement of rape prevention interventions and programs in the future. A qualitative descriptive research approach was adopted mainly involving in-depth interviews for primary data collection. The study involved 14 research participants purposively selected from five government institutions. The study findings indicated Gandhi Memorial Hospital to be the only institution in Ethiopia implementing an integrated rape prevention intervention. Efforts were directed largely at secondary prevention, with little attention being paid to primary prevention. Recommendations included tackling the multiple factors influencing rape at different levels of the social-ecological model simultaneously through the implementation, strengthening, and intensification of well-designed, comprehensive rape prevention interventions and programs. / Ukuxhatshazwa kwabafazi nabantwana e-Ethiopia kufana nenye yeengxaki zempilo kwaye kudinga ukuthathelwa ingqalelo ngokungxamisekileyo. Altesame 14 deelnemers by vyf staatsinstellings is vir hierdie doel gekies. / Sociology / M.A. (Sociology)
